7 Habits Successful People

...Amber Wennerstrom DSS Leadership Session 2 18 April 2012 The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey is a very insightful book providing an approach to obtain personal and interpersonal effectiveness. I really gained a lot from Covey’s different examples he provided in each chapter via family, business and society in general. Covey explains how a person must make a paradigm shift prior to incorporating these habits into their life. We have to be committed to ourselves before we can commit to others. I really find this “inside-out” approach inspiring as change starts with oneself. By incorporating these habits in our lives it will make success easier to obtain both personally and professionally and failure a lot easier to swallow as well. But before we make any changes in our lives we first have to focus on our own personal attitudes and behaviors. Habit number one discusses the importance of being proactive. In order to be proactive we have to possess the initiative to make things happen. Being proactive is the ability to respond positively to our circumstances. I have heard so many times the expression, “that’s just the way I am, “to me this is one of the most frustrating things one can say. I just want to tell them “No, that is the way you are choosing to be and there is something you can do about it.” We all have to bypass the negativity and find a way to focus our time and energy on being effective. Covey......

...because he does it at the end of each day…he stated that they needed to make sure the barn was secure and the horses have enough food and water…the farm hand again said, Sir, they have enough food and water because that is something I do every day. See when you prepare yourself for your STORM on a daily basis, when it comes you will be ready. When you use every day as a tool to better yourself rather it’s on the field, on the court, in the class room or within your circle of friends, when that storm comes you will be ready. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR YOU OPPORTUNITY TO BE SUCCESS. PREPARE YOURSELF MENTALLY TO FACE YOUR BATTLES UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU OPPORTUNITY COMES THAT YOU HAVE REHEARSED THAT MOMENT IF YOU CAN DO THAT, YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL When someone ask who is that kid….grin and say I TELL YOU WHAT..I will show you who I am, but most all I will SHOW YOU what I am about…HARD WORK, DEDICATION AND DISCIPLINE.. There’s Purpose in Preparation “…so He made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.” Jeremiah 18:4 Seasons of preparation are not only for young adults who are training for their future. Seasons of preparation occur throughout our life, preceding new levels in our relationships, influence, contributions, ministry or career. God has purpose in everything, including the transitions necessary for our advancement, a time to make us ready for what’s ahead. God has a wide variety of purposes for seasons of transition, but all are......

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...Zach Bayreuther 3-5-13 Leadership Studies 251 “Two Habits I Need to Work on” When reading the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Stephen R. Covey, I learned that I need to work on some things, if I want to be successful. I need to set specific goals because goals are what drive people to be successful. Covey talks about a “Paradigm Shift” and wants his readers to change their mindset. He proposes seven habits that effective people portray throughout their life and he wants everybody to pick these up in order to be more successful. The two habits that I am going to focus on are Habit 1: Be Proactive, and Habit 4: Think Win-Win. I want to focus on these two because when reading about these two, I feel that if I can improve these habits, I can bolster my mindset/life. I feel that everybody can be more proactive. This is Covey’s first habit. This habit discusses that your decisions are the primary factor for determining effectiveness in your life. You have to take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow your decisions. You choose if you are happy or sad. Every second that you live, you decide what you are doing with your life. Covey then says that if you’re not happy with your life, change it. It only takes one decision. However, it starts with one decision but that one may trigger a bunch of others. You cannot blame everything on your parents or grandparents. Covey talks about two different people in this......

...can effectively solve problems, maximize opportunity, continually learn and integrate principles in an upward growth. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey 1. Being Proactive Proactivity means taking initiative, as a human being, we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions. Highly proactive people recognize responsibility. “Response-ability” means the ability to choose your response. In making such a choice, we become reactive. Reactive people are affected by their physical and social environment, the ‘social weather’. Proactive people are influenced by external stimuli, whether physical, social or psychological. 2. Begin with the End in Mind “Begin with the end in mind” is to begin today with the image, picture or paradigm of the end of your life as your frame of reference or the criterion by which everything else is examined. It means to start with clear understanding of your destination. It also means to know where you are going so that you better understand where you are now so you can go to a right direction. 3. Putting First Things First Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things’ are, it is management that puts them first. Management is discipline carrying it out. 4. Think Win/Win The habit of effective interpersonal leadership is Think Win/Win. Win/Win is not a technique it is a total philosophy of human......

7 Habits of Highly Effective People Book Summary

...7 Habits of Highly Effective People Book Summary Before going into the actual 7 habits, the author Steve Covey goes into few important concepts. Character Ethic (good) There are basic principles of effective living and people can only experience true success and enduring happines as they learn and integrate these principles into their basic character. Personality Ethic (not so good) It is manipulative, deceptive, encouraging people to use techniques to get other people to like them. Personality ethic is illusory and deceptive and trying to get high quality results with its techniques and quick fixes – not effective at all. Paradigm The book talks a lot about paradigm shifts and I remember having to look it up in the dictionary to find the true meaning of it; paradigm meaning: model, theory, perception, assumption, the way we see world. Conditioning affects our perceptions/paradigms (old/young lady drawing example in the book worth checking out). We see the world not as it is but as ‘we are’ through our paradigms. Different people can have different views and still both be correct. The more aware we are of our basic paradigms the more we can examine/test them against reality, listen to others and be open to their perceptions getting a larger picture and far more objective view. Paradigm shifts move us from one way of seeing the world to another. They influence our relationship with others. Not all are good. If we want to make relatively minor changes in our lives we...

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE ~ BY STEPHEN COVEY THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE HABIT 1 : BE PROACTIVE Your life doesn't just "happen." Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results. Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are "response-able." They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn't, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather. All of these external forces act as stimuli that we respond to. Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power--you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive......

7 Habits of Highly Effective Person

...The 7 Habits[edit] The book first introduces the concept of paradigm shift and helps the reader understand that different perspectives exist, i.e. that two people can see the same thing and yet differ with each other. On this premise, it introduces the seven habits in a proper order. Each chapter is dedicated to one of the habits, which are represented by the following imperatives: Independence[edit] The First Three Habits surround moving from dependence to independence (i.e., self-mastery): 1 - Be Proactive roles and relationships in life. 2 - Begin with the End in Mind envision what you want in the future so that you know concretely what to make a reality. 3 - Put First Things First A manager must manage his own person. Personally. And managers should implement activities that aim to reach the second habit. Covey says that rule two is the mental creation; rule three is the physical creation. Interdependence[edit] The next three habits talk about Interdependence (e.g. working with others): 4 - Think Win-Win Genuine feelings for mutually beneficial solutions or agreements in your relationships. Value and respect people by understanding a "win" for all is ultimately a better long-term resolution than if only one person in the situation had gotten his way. 5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood Use empathic listening to be genuinely influenced by a person, which compels them to reciprocate the listening and take an open mind to being influenced by......

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...7 Habits of Highly Effective People Reginald Allen Strayer University The Three Most Important Concepts Stephen R. Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, describes the differences between personality ethic and character ethic. The character ethic is the idea that a person advances in basis of their character. This was culturally the main idea expressed in the United States up until about World War I, when poplar literature began to focus more on short-cuts and easy ways to manipulate situations or to get what you want. Character ethic depends on deep changes within each of us, while the personality ethic falls back on methods or techniques. The personality ethic does not challenge us and does not bring about deep changes in us. “The problem with relying on the Personality Ethic is that unless the basic underlying paradigms are right, simply changing outward behavior is not effective (Covey 2010).” Paradigms are the mental maps that we use to describe the world around us. The key of a paradigm isn’t much in the nature of a thing as much as our perception of the thing. Covey uses the example of a person in Chicago with a map of Detroit trying to find their way around the city. No matter how hard they try, they will not be successful. In order to maintain correct paradigms it is essential to keep an open mind and to realize that no matter how much we see, there is always more to the picture. “If our paradigm is not close to reality, our......

7 Habits of Highly Profitable Traders

...7 Habits of Highly Profitable Traders. Habit #1 - The Habit of Trading ONLY with Risk Capital Many people have entered the activity of trading with money they could not afford to lose and as a result they started off trading with "scared" money. They' re fear of loss was bigger than they're desire for gain and they traded with a nervous and anxious state of mind. Scared money never wins. It's wrong to borrow money to trade or take out a second mortgage on your home for trading capital. The way to begin is to determine how much you could afford to lose financially and then from that amount determine how much money you could afford to lose emotionally. Many beginning traders will look to their accountant, financial planner or spouse for advice regarding the amount they could lose financially without considering the emotional side. If your accountant says you could afford to lose Rs. 5, 00, 000 without it severely impacting your financial status, the next thing to do is ask yourself "How would I feel if I lost Rs. 500000 trading in the next 12 months"? As you can see, financially allocating an amount of money for risk capital is very different form emotionally allocating it. Anything can and will happen in the market. Develop the habit of only trading with money you can afford to lose financially and emotionally. Habit #2 - The habit of accepting full responsibility for their own trades. Successful traders always take full responsibility for their own actions in all...
