An Idiot Abroad
The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington
Publisher: Canongate
Year: 2011

Genre: Comedy
‘An Idiot Abroad – The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington’ is a written accompaniment to the hit television series ‘An Idiot Abroad’. The book not only re-tells the TV series, but also sports new, unseen parts from the series and offers a fresh, simple perspective on the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’.
I think it’s reasonable to say that those who find themselves reading this book will have seen the Sky1 series, ‘An Idiot Abroad’ of which this book accompanies and thus, not much of an introduction to Karl is required. However for the purpose of this review, Karl Pilkington is an English television personality, actor, author and former radio producer. Karl met Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (Whom sent him on his travels) through gaining prominence as the producer of their show on XFM. Karl tends to be the butt of Ricky’s practical jokes.
The book begins with an illustrated conversation between Ricky and Steve that was filmed for the TV series and sets up the entire premise of the project. The book comprises of seven chapters, each consisting of one visit to a ‘wonder’. Countries visited in the book are: China, Jordan, India, Egypt, Peru, Brazil and Mexico. The chapters are presented in chronological order which differs from the show, but makes sense from a narrative point of view as you see Karl’s attitude to each trip change. He goes from careful excitement to irritation and exhaustion as he finds himself having to take part in cultural activities, living their ways of life and quickly wanting to go home.
I’ve never read any of the other Karl Pilkington books, but after seeing the series on TV it seemed like a no brainer to pick it up and have a gander. However, ‘The Hilarious Number One Bestseller’, to me, didn’t live up to its meaning.…...

American Idiot Review

...The Broadway show American Idiot takes its audience on a journey through the trials and tribulations of 3 young men growing up in America saturated in media and unsure of just who they truly are. The musical is an extravagant display of visual media, dazzling the viewers and leaving them wondering how to divide their attention among all the different things happening on stage. However, despite this strength, the show lacks character development as well as sufficient plot motivation. The plot of the show is easy enough to describe. Three boys, dissatisfied with their humdrum suburban existence decide to hit the road and find something out there more exciting than their hometown. However, Will (Michael Esper), one of the boys is sidetracked when his girlfriend Heather (Mary Faber) informs him that she is pregnant with his child. The other two boys, Johnny (the main character, played by John Gallagher, Jr.) and Tunny (Stark Sands) leave Will behind and head off to make their way in the world. Soon Tunny enlists in the army, and Johnny gets hooked on heroin, creating an alter ego named St. Jimmy (Tony Vincent). As the show goes on, Johnny falls for a woman named Whatshername (Rebecca Naomi Jones), but their relationship is destroyed by St. Jimmy, or his addiction. Tunny loses his leg in battle, but gains love in the form of a woman named The Extraordinary Girl (Christina Sajous). Heather gives birth, but ends up leaving Will due to his alcoholism and general apathy.......

Tv and Idiots

...Does TV make you smarter or are you idoit in the box? Television has been around since the 1920s transmitting and receiving images. Over the years TV has marked its way through our lives. Majority of Americans have a more than one TV and DVD player in their home. How has TV evolved since the 1920’s? Has TV now changed the way we act and live as human beings? Does television now make us smarter than it did in early 1920s or has it made us idiots and less intelligent? Steven Johnson a writer who published his article in new time magazines called watching TV makes your smarter? Dana Stevens, a movie critic also written for the New York times; responded to Steven Johnson article by calling thinking outside the idiot box. Steven believes that TV makes us more intelligent while Dana Steven argues that TV doesn’t enhance our brains we shouldn’t base our lives around the television set. Johnson states that watching shows like “24″ make people smarter, because it makes them think about certain events that had occurred and it makes the audience think critically while watching. The show also suggest, the exact opposite is happening: the culture is getting more cognitively demanding, not less.”(Johnson 279) The sleep curve says Steven Johnson, is the single most important new force altering mental development of today, and I believe it is largely a force of good: enhancing our cognitive brains, not dumbing them down.(Johnson 291). Johnson also states that bad TV, like......

American Idiot

...1. This essay suggests that an "American Idiot" is a perosn that relies on the media and gives into emotional tactics. For example, someone who pledges allegiance before they understand much of anything about America. It is somebody who just does what everybody else is doing. 2. An example of contextual analysis is when you were describing the cover of the album and how the music within inspired your emotions. "Widely considered one of the best anti-war protests of 2004, the album came complete with the picture of a hand gripping a bloody heart-shaped grenade. While the cover gave me an idea for one of the shoot's best photos, it was the music within that gave voice to my anger and consoled my relentlessness, assuring me that I wasn't the only one that believed so passionately that our country was on the wrong track." (page 1, paragraph 4) An example of textual analysis is when you analyzed the term "Redneck Agenda" that had been previously mentioned in the essay. "The 'Redneck Agenda' might also be referring to another favorite punching bag that Armstrong hits in many other songs on the album (most notibly 'Jesus of Suburbia'), the religious right wing of the conservative party." (page 4, paragraph 1) An example of word analysis is when you analyzed the word, "faggot". "while the word 'faggot' is a slang, derogatory term for a homosexual, it has also been used to define anyone who refuses to fight or be 'manly'". (page 3, paragraph 3) An example of a sentence......

Studying Abroad

...Studying Abroad “One’s destination is never a place but a new way of seeing things.” Henry Miller. This quote is an expression of my opinion about studying abroad. I have dreamed about travelling to different country, studying there and meeting new people. I had an image about it in my mind that was full of nothing but excitement. In fact, studying abroad is a great chance to discover a new life and challenge myself to fit into it. Now after a year and half of studying in the United States I can say that it was one of my best decisions. I am learning lots of things from it, not only about school subjects, but about myself and life. Studying abroad is an open door for discovery, maturity and acceptance. Studying abroad helped me discover the strong relationship between me and my family. When I used to be with my family, I did not imagine how life is going to be away from them until I traveled to the US. I am now more aware of the value of being around my family, sharing stories at the end of the day or going into a conflict about silly things. Likewise, I understand the necessity of my mother's warm hug and sweet kisses every day. Also, as an international student I am missing a lot of family events back in my home. For instance, my only sister was pregnant a couple months ago. My mind was with her all the time, and each time she would not answer her phone I would think that something bad happened either to her or to the baby. Later on she......

Attending classes in a different culture will not only expand my capacity as a student to learn but also help me interpret new information. So by participating in a study abroad program I hope to learn about the differences the kinesiology classes offered in Essex are from ones offered at Chico State. I have taken rigorous classes and maintained a 3.0 grade point average. I know classes will be challenging and thought provoking at Essex motivating me to do my very best so that I might reach my goals that much sooner. Dedicating my life to improving lives of others is very appealing to me. I aspire to be a physical therapist one day. Therefore it is important for me to learn everything there is to learn about physiotherapy from a European point of view. I'll also be able to complete classes for my exercise physiology major, as well as my nutrition minor. Furthermore I will be taking classes I already took here in the United States to help improve my overall GPA in order to help me when I apply to graduate school. On a more personal athletic level as to why I want to participate in the England abroad program is soccer. I am a huge soccer fan! Soccer is the sport I grew up playing and I absolutely love it! Here in the United States it is not a sport that is widely followed. So it would be a dream come true to see a live match and learn about the different rivalries. I......

Generation of Idiots

...negatives effects of the internet. The internet has changed humanity no doubt about it. Some people might use it to learn new things that will positively further their knowledge, while others choose to commit frowned upon acts, and corrupt themselves. Pornographic material easily accessible to any curious child or teen with internet access can lead them down the path of corruption. Pornographic material and similar explicit content available on the internet tend to degrade humanity. Almost any song or movie you can think of can easily be pirated from the internet, making protecting copyright almost impossible. Albert Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”, this quote is so precise, and it scares me. The internet is a great place for one to learn how to write an essay, but also the perfect place for someone to plagiarize someone else’s. Plagiarism and pirating copyrighted material cause very negative outcomes, this could ruin one’s reputation, or even worst, get them locked up in federal prison with 500,000 dollars bail (Pirating). P2P sharing sites like thepiratesbay, and kissasstorrents have successfully been taken down by the CIA, they are slowly cracking down on such websites while they remain lenient on the pornography websites corrupting our youth. With pornography being easily accessible and only a couple clicks away, an addicted user will see it as a new pack of cigarettes in......

3 Idiots

...3 Idiots is an Indian comedy movie with a great message, directed by Rajkumar Hirani in 2009. I like this movie because the message they conveyed through this film. The education system in India is very strict and with strict I don’t mean that by school rules; I mean the level of judging according to the book knowledge. One played the famous Indian actor, Amir Khan the main character, with other famous co-actors. The film also won Film Fare Award at 6th position and also best director award. The idea behind this movie was to highlight the mentality of the educated people in India, especially if they are on higher position then how badly they want their kids to be on top of everything. The competition is very tough and its all about to make proud of your parents as it doesn’t matter what children want to do with their career life. Now in these days, competition is so hard that kids don’t want to understand things and logic behind their work, all they want is to cram so they can do best on their exams and beat other kids. In this movie, the main character, Amir Khan conveyed the message that getting good grades on the exam doesn’t mean excellent academic standing. In the film, there was one incidence where one boy committed suicide because he was not qualified to sit for final exams, as he didn’t pass the pre-engineering exam because he was working on his project where he was using his knowledge instead of cramming book definitions. The dean of the university was very hard to......

The Three Idiots

...AB Psychology August 24, 2011 The Three Idiots 1. How does the movie relate to the management principle of leading and controlling? Rancho in this movie is a perfect example of a leader. He succeeded in influencing and motivating his two friends to follow their dreams. He does not impose it to any of them but instead he walk his talk. He makes it a point to understand their personalities, attitudes, and emotions and he attacked the situation considering all of these factors. Farhan pursued his dream and became successful on this field. Raju, on the other hand, developed self trust and worth and was able to get a good job With regards to control, the fact that in the end of the story, Rancho was able to smoothly run a school carrying his principles and ideas of learning only meant that he is an effective leader. Even in the “giving birth” scene, Rancho was in full control of the situation. He was able to give directions to everybody and everybody followed. The College (ICE) also, even traditional, could have control standards based on their own qualifications. They succeeded in imposing strict control on the students as evidenced by the prestige that they were able to built. 2. Relate the movie in terms of career management, or choice of career after college. However, this different approach is sneered upon by the faculties, including the dean of the college, Professor Viru "Virus" Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani). In contrast, Virus' favorite student, Chatur "Silencer" Ramalingam, (Omi Vaidya) believes in mindless memorizing over understanding, in order to reach his goals of corporate and social status. Meanwhile, Rancho falls in love with Virus' medical student daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) when he, Raju and Farhan accidentally crash her sister's wedding banquet to obtain a free meal, which infuriates Virus. Virus labels Rancho and his friends as "idiots" and continually attempts to break Rancho's friendship with Farhan and Raju. Things further escalate when the three friends drunkenly break into Virus's house one night to allow Rancho to confess his love to Pia, and urinate on the front door before fleeing. The next day, Virus threatens to rusticate Raju unless he squeals on Rancho. Not wanting to betray his friend or let down his family, Raju attempts suicide and ends up in a coma.
