dAbduction by Shelagh Delaney
It’s normal that siblings have some sort of competition going on, where the winner gets love and respect from the parents, while the “loser” gets yelled at. This is why we sometimes hate our siblings, but at the end of the day, we know that we don’t want to live without having our siblings in our lives, and that we in the end, would do anything for them, because it’s our precious family and the best we ever had.
The story “Abduction” is a short story by Shelagh Delaney. The story starts in media res and takes place in London, where Ann lives. In the beginning the story is described and told by a 1st. person narrator, which later changes into a 3rd. person narrator, who is a limited narrator but with knowledge of the people, we meet in the story. Even though the narrator technique changes, it seems to be the same person who is telling the story. Most likely it is an older brother, because he says: “our parents´ marriage,” (L. 35). He is going to London from Manchester, it might be because he´s going to the brother’s funeral. He also knows a lot about his sister, such as she was sterilized, when she was a younger woman.
The relationship between Ann and her little brother is strange. Ann takes her brother to London, because she thinks she can give him a better life and a better future, than their parents can. Of course the brother goes with her sister. He is still young and thinks his clever and successful sister has all the answers about life. The text obviously indicates that she is rich and therefore gives him a generous allowance. Ann is overprotecting and spoils him. When Marianne says to Ann’s brother: “Are you sure you’re not really her baby?”(L. 81-82) then I think, it could be right, even though the brother says that it isn’t possible.
The younger brother is a sixteen-year old boy in the beginning,…...

Abduction

...We all know what it means to be a part of a family and whatever comes along with it. It has its bad side sand its good sides. You don’t choose your own family like you choose your own friends and therefore conflicts among family members will be hard to avoid. Of course most families make it work but we also see families where things are out of control. Where the love between the family members is shown in away that doesn´t help anyone and where jealousy and hate take over. You may ask yourself if love really can kill. The short story “Abduction” is about a boy and his family and how things didn't work out at all.The conflict of the story is between a boy and his older sister. What is important is that the story is not told from the boy or his sister’s point of view but from someone standing outside. There are hints that indicate that the narrator is a sibling to the boy and his sister.”He’d been born late in my parents’ marriage and was much younger than she was”(l. 35). It becomes clear that the narrator has got the same parents as the boy and his sister and that the main character´s sister, Ann, is older than him. ”Being only a few years older I remembered those days too but my recollections were a bit different”. From these quotes it is clear that the three persons are related - they are siblings. There are other quotes though which contradict this. “Like most teenagers he hadn't much confidence in his mother and farther and Anne, his sister, had all the answers.” Instead......

There is only one problem. You are sterile, so what do you do? You abduct your own little brother. You spoil the child and make sure he has what he needs, but is that all it takes to raise a child? Abduction

...Nowadays, success, a happy family, a good career and material wealth equals a happy life. Some people lose themselves in the middle of the search for all these things. They are so focused on the creation of this identity that they forget, or even try to repress, their real identity and roots. They are so determined to create this new happiness-recipe identity that they forget their real wishes, roots and personality. The short story “Abduction” by Shelagh Delaney deals with this subject. We encounter a very unusual relationship between Ann and her younger brother. Their living together is normal; however, the way Ann brought him to live with her in London is noteworthy. She told their parents that she was taking him – 16 years old at the time - to live at her home; and simply did it without any sort of refusal.   You would think that they would have objected in some way, but she was able to convince them. Yet, the odd part is how she treats her brother. She gives him allowance, she pays everything for him, she makes sure he is taken care of job-wise etc. She acts as if she was his mother and strangely enough, as the following line indicates “But he knew his sister expected something of him…” (p. 2, l. 51), he is responding as if he in fact is her son. This view is already put forth by his wife who directly asks him if she actually is his mother in disguise as a sister. First of all we are told in the early stages of the story about Ann’s youth and some of her former......

Abduction

...Abduction Around the world, people are abducted. Some for money, some to give the abductor a rush or a satisfaction. Lives are ruined by abductions, and some people will not be able to live a normal life. There have been cases all over the world where people have been kidnapped and been incarcerated in for example a basement for years. And after being escaped, they live in fear of the next person walking by, will abduct her or him to satisfy them selves. Another kind of abduction is what I would call a volunteered abduction where a person is convinced that is as in the text “abduction” is a good idea to move to London. But as seen the short story, written by Shelagh Delaney, it doesn’t turn out that well, and the “victim” ends up wanting to go back to when things were as before. “Abduction” written by Shelagh Delaney. The text “abduction” is about a girl called Ann, who after living her hole childhood in Manchester moves to the big city of London, to have a great job, and live her dream. Abduction

...Abduction By Mia Christiansen 1) Abduction is a short story written by Shelagh Delaney in 2002. From the beginning the story takes place in Manchester, but the scene changes to Kensington in London and tells us about a woman named Ann, the main character. The title of the story Abduction describes the story very well. Ann “abducts” her younger brother, who has just left school to live with her in London. He was only 16 years old when Ann took him from their parents. She has high expectations of him like a mother. In general she acts as if he was her own child. The story is told by an unknown narrator, who is a part of the story. It is told in the past tense. We are introduced to three characters: the main character Ann, her younger brother and the narrator. Ann is the oldest child in the family. She is a typical older sister. She is described as clever, independent, very self-assured, and proud. She is very successful and focuses on education and job. She left her home town and moved to London as soon as the opportunity came up. You can see this in the text: “When the best job opportunity, working in a London children's hospital, came along, she couldn't get out of Manchester quick enough” (l. 30, p. 1). Ann loves children and she likes working as paediatrician. She has a good job and a big house in Kensington and she spends her time looking at cultural things like theatres and art galleries. Life she had always wanted. Ann’s younger brother is the youngest in the......

Sex Education Being Taught in Schools

...that teen pregnancy and other teen sex issues can be reduced through sex education and communication within the family. Sex education also helps teens to realize the dangers of sex in order to prevent them from engaging in risky behavior (“Teen and Sex” 1). Evident to the failure of parents to speak to their children occasionally about sexual practices can have serious consequences on a Childs life. In a story shared by Shelagh Genius she said: I remember being called to the emergency department in the middle of the night to see a fourteen-year-old who had experienced ten days of severe pain in her lower abdomen. After completing the medical history and physical examination, it was evident that this girl was suffering from Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (P.I.D.), an inflammation of her reproductive organs resulting from a sexually transmitted infection… In view of the potential consequences of this severe pelvic infection, it was troubling to me that neither this teenager nor her mother had ever considered STDs before this teen began having sex (“Stephen and Shelagh Genuis”2). If this parent had maybe somehow spoke to her child about sex and safe sex, then there is without any doubt that this would not have happened. These are reason why sex education should be an important course for every teenage boy and girl in schools across the nation. Teens will always know about sex, but the issue is, where do we want them to learn this act from? Is it the media? Is it by a friend......

Gaining Knowledge of Our Environment

...can see just what is happening around them. In Delaney’s essay, Pilgrim at Topanga Creek, he goes on to discuss the nature of human versus wildlife. The wildlife that he seems to focus on is coyotes and humans coexist. He goes on to explain that coyotes do not mean intentional harm, because they are just doing what they need to do to survive. Another environmentalist, Aldo Leopold wrote an essay called “Land Ethic.” Leopold goes on to express his ideals of how mistreated the environment really is. Like Delaney, he expresses how humans and the environment coexist; however, unlike Delaney, Leopold refers to plants and animals. He tries to prove the point that humans do not have respect for the natural world. While both essays’ focus on the subject of the environment there is a compare and contrast of similarities, differences, and tones. In both essays’ Leopold and Delaney discuss how easily humans take over land that belonged to animals long before we took over the land. Delaney talks about how the coyotes invade the yards in his neighborhood; however, there are people that leave food out for the coyotes, but call in complaints when the coyotes attack their yards, pets, or children. About 100 coyotes per year are trapped and euthanizes by Animal Control Department (212 Boyle). These animals are killed or tortured for doing what they need to do to survive, while being encouraged to come back to what is considered human territory. Leopold displays a similar situation in his......

Abduction

...Abduction “Abduction” is a story published by Comma press in 2002, written by Shelagh Delaney. The story deals with topics like family, standards, love and expectations. The short story is about a woman named Ann, who takes her 16-year old brother with her to London, where she has bought a house in Kensington. She spoils him rotten, by giving him allowances, clothing and a lot more. Ann takes on the roll as being a mother for her younger brother, and it all leads to a fatal ending, where he winds up dying of alcoholism. The title “Abduction” adds up with how Ann abducted her brother from their parents in Manchester. The story is told in past tense, by a narrator who is unknown. Although we never get to know who the narrator is, it seems to be one of Ann’s other siblings since there in the text I written:”He’d been born late in our parents’ marriage and was much younger than she was”. But later in the story there is written: “He had learned it from his father” which shows us that the story has switched narrators, and no longer called it “our parents” but “his father”. The first narrator of the story is thinking about killing Ann because he/she is so furious at her, and probably blames her for what has happened to the brother. Here you can see that the narrators’ personal opinion is shown in the text. The story doesn’t have a rich vocabulary, its “everyday” language. It’s light and easy to read. While reading the story, the reader always stays at a distance. Although in......

Abduction

...Abduction The short story, “Abduction”, is about a boy whose sister is a control freak. The special thing about this text is how it’s being told. It’s not from the boy’s point of view but from a third person’s, the narrator’s. I can see that in the way the cha¬rac¬ters’ feelings and thoughts are described to the readers. Furthermore, I think that the narrator is a sibling to the boy, I base this on line 35, page 1, where the narrator says: “He’d been born late in our parents’ mar¬riage and was much younger than she was”. “Our parents” means that they are also the narrator’s parents. This short story starts with an introduction, where the narrator tells “I wanted to do her in”, and later on we get to know that the narrator wants to hurt the woman Ann, who is the boy’s elder sister. Actually, the text starts in media res, and I personally felt that the text had a strong influence on me as a reader from the very beginning; For example strong words and sentences as: “I reckoned that even if I did get caught it would be worth it”. Ann is characterized as a good example of an old-fashioned studios schoolgirl who loves children. She is educated as a doctor, specialised in paediatrics. She lives in London, and according to herself, that’s the only right place to live. There¬fore, her younger brother must join her and live with her in London, she thinks. She almost kidnapped him because of her obsession by London. Ann’s little brother started studying at a media college, even......

The Abduction of Europa

...The Abduction of Europa Green/Roman Mosaics during the Third Century A.D. were one of the most common attributes of private homes and communal buildings during the rein of the Greek/Roman Empire. Nonetheless, mosaics are not just aesthetic works of fine art but merely are an indispensable memoir of substantial myths, stories, and legends of the past, whether it may be depicting a heroic scene of one of the greatest battles of time to a royal celebration of some sort. The intricate details and time put into creating such a piece of work reveal so much about the Greek/Roman culture. They revere and honour all the hardship they went through and then develop these fascinating life changing events into works of art, which, we now read about in books or view in museums. One specific work of art, which, portrays so much is The Abduction of Europa mosaic, now placed in the National Museum of Beirut. Nevertheless, most Greek/Roman mosaics were used and created to strengthen and support the Greek/Roman social structure and their societal reputation in the empire. They were not only created for societal purposes, but also to keep consequential evocations alive throughout history. The mosaics of the Greek/Roman culture have been said to be influenced vastly from Hellenistic art - some of the most common subject matters artists liked to capture and portray were scenes of the sea and Greek myths, such as Gods and Goddesses and the encounters they endured. This explains clearly, the......

He should analysis every cost and associate them with their contribution of the revenue from the body shop. 2. Assuming Mr. Delaney decides to keep the body shop, and the consultant reports that it is feasible to raise prices, should Mr. Delaney do so? If he does, what general guide can you suggest as to how much prices should be increased? I think simply raising prices may not solve the problem. The reason that Mr. Delaney want to keep the body shop is not about the profitability. He believed that a good dealership had an obligation to provide high-quality body shop work to its customers, which means the pricing of the services of the body shop, can be considered as a contribution pricing. Even though these services and products are sold at a loss, under certain conditions they may increase the company’s total profit. In this case, a decent body shop or a cost-effective body shop may help Mr. Delaney to maintain his old customers and even attract more new customers. What I suggest Mr. Delaney about the pricing is just keep in line with the rest of his competitors. 3. What action should Mr. Delaney take? Because the analysis provided by Mr. Delaney’s consultant is not entirely accurate. I recommend him to analysis his cost of the body shop again, and figure out the accurately cost of the body shop. Sound Voice

...THE SOUND VOICE © Shelagh Davies, M.Sc, S-LP(C) SOUND ADVICE Your guide to a strong, clear, easy voice 1. KEEP THE LARYNX HYDRATED To vibrate easily and resist injury, the vocal folds need to be kept moist, both internally and externally. Dry air, mouth breathing, smoking and certain drying medications all dry the vocal folds externally, while drinking too much caffeine or alcohol and not drinking enough water dries them internally. To make sure your vocal folds are well hydrated: DRINK: 8 to 10 glasses/day of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic liquids. Drink more in hot weather and if you are exercising or using your voice a lot. Drink water: it’s the easiest and it’s what your system needs. How can you tell if you are drinking enough water? Follow the dieticians’ advice to “pee pale”. Check your urine – if it is pale yellow, you are well hydrated; if it is dark yellow and concentrated, reach for the water bottle. 8 - 10 cups daily STEAM: Breathing humidified air rehydrates the vocal folds from the outside. It can be useful if: • you have an upper respiratory infection • your throat feels tired or sore • you have been doing a lot of talking or singing. (We automatically breathe through the mouth and that dries out the vocal folds.) • you are in a dry environment, like an airplane or Saskatchewan. Steam for 5 to 10 minutes, twice a day. • Take a hot shower or bath • Put your face over a bowl of hot water and drape a towel over your head (you get a facial at......
