(a) BEARDSLEY SERVICE CO. Income Statement For the Month Ended June 30, 2012 Revenues Service revenue $7,500 Expenses Salaries and wages expense $1,400 Supplies expense 1,000 Maintenance and repairs expense 600 Advertising expense 400 Utilities expense 300 Total expenses 3,700 Net income $3,800

BEARDSLEY SERVICE CO. Retained Earnings Statement For the Month Ended June 30, 2012 Retained earnings, June 1 $ 0 Add: Net income 3,800 3,800 Less: Dividends 1,400 Retained earnings, June 30 $2,400

PROBLEM 1-3A (Continued) BEARDSLEY SERVICE CO. Balance Sheet June 30, 2012 Assets Cash $ 4,600 Accounts receivable 4,000 Supplies 2,400 Equipment 26,000 Total assets $37,000 Liabilities and Stockholders’ Equity Liabilities Notes payable $12,000 Accounts payable 500 Total liabilities $12,500 Stockholders’ equity Common stock 22,100 Retained earnings 2,400 24,500 Total liabilities and stockholders’ equity $37,000

(b) Beardsley had a very successful first month, earning $3,800 or 51% of service revenues ($3,800 ÷ $7,500). Its net income represents a 17% return on the initial investment ($3,800 ÷ $22,100).

(c) Distributing a dividend after only one month of operations is probably unusual. Most new businesses choose to build up a cash balance to provide for future operating and investing activities or pay down debt. Beardsley distributed 37% ($1,400 ÷ $3,800) of its first month’s income but it had adequate cash to do so and still showed a significant increase in retained earnings.

Why is the identification of risks, by listing assets and their vulnerabilities, so important to the risk management process? According to Whitman, risk management is the process of identifying risk, as represented by vulnerabilities, to an organization’s information assets and infrastructure, and taking steps to reduce this risk to an acceptable level. The identification of risk, by listing assets and vulnerabilities, is so important to the risk management process in the sense that the identification stage allows managers or information security professionals to identify the organization’s information assets, classify them into useful groups, and prioritize them by according to their importance to the organization. Every risk is worth being considered because it can have serious impact on the organization operations. However, identifying risks is very important because it gives an organization the opportunity to see which risks can cause significant damage so that the organization can tackle those risks first. 2. Acc 300 Accounting Equation

...Accounting Equation ACC 300 April 28, 2014 Accounting Equation The accounting equation is an important part of a financial statement. It gives, at all times, proper information because it gathers the appropriate numbers that explain a company’s assets. A balance sheet portrays the financial situation of a company at any given point. The accounting equation is known as: Assets equals Liabilities plus Owner’s Equity. Assets refer to the resources that the business owns, such as accounts receivable, machinery and equipment, land and buildings, inventory, cash at hand and bank and prepaid insurance. It is evident from the accounting equation that the total amount of assets is obtained by summing liabilities and owner’s equity (McLaney & Atrill, 2007). Liabilities refer to the obligations of the business, which are the amounts that the company owes. Liabilities are mostly accounts payable including loans payable, creditors, salaries and wages payable, interests and income taxes payable. Liabilities can be perceived in two dimensions, which include claims by creditors against the assets of the business, and as a source along with the capital (Warren & Reeve, 2011). Owner’s or stockholders equity, sometimes known as capital, refers to amount left after subtracting liabilities from assets. It usually denotes the amount of investment plus the cumulative net profit of the business that has not been withdrawn by the owner or distributed to the stockholders in the case......
