I was able to relate the story of little Steve in chapter three because I am also dreaming to become a nurse , but my friends told me to just give up you won’t be able to do what you want when we grow up. They always discourage me in the sense that being nurse requires a lot of efforts , that I need to be a book worm person if want to be a nurse. That they can't see any quality of being a nurse on me. But I keep reminding myself through the saying '' If others can ! Why can't I? I got my strengths and confidents from it. I really can’t wait to prove to my friends that they were wrong when they tell me that I can’t do what I want to do. No one can't stop me on pursuing my dreams. The message I’m trying to say is to never give up on your dreams. It doesn’t matter what people say or do to you, you can do whatever you set your heart out to do, as long as you follow through with it. For me one of the reasons that will make me sacrifice my dreams are my family. My failures would never my basis in working toward my goals, because I knew it is just part of the process. I will rather take it as a challenge to make myself more better. I will put away all the negative things that will not help me to reach my dreams. I will just do the sacrifices if I knew it worth. It’s just the choice between pursuing a goal, or giving it up for the good of your family. But when comes in achieving our goals no one will stop us, it just depend on how will you handle the situation. We must be determinate on something we want to accomplish.…...

Success

...Do you know someone rich and famous? Is he confident, popular, and joyful all of the time—the epitome of mainstream success? Or, on the other hand, is he stressed, having second thoughts about his life choices, and unsure about the meaning of his life? I am willing to be that it is the second one. Mainstream marketing and media have effectively brainwashed our society into accepting a false, even potentially dangerous definition of success. Marketers want us to believe that having lots of money, living in a big house, and owning all of the latest cars, fashions, and technology is the key to happiness, and hence, success. This overstated, falsely advertised myth is hardly ever the case in real life. True success requires respect, appreciation, integrity, and patience—all of which are traits that by human nature are genuinely difficult to attain—especially in the face of modern marketers who relentlessly deceive us, control our thoughts, and usurp our independence in order to increase their bottom line. Marketers want us to believe that living a selfish life, involving nothing but the pursuit of money and fame will bring success and happiness. Sadly, this is not true. Money is comparable to the often-mentioned new toy—fun while it is brand new and fresh, but terribly boring and unexciting after a few hours of play. Though money can buy conveniences and comforts, one needs much more than superficial luxuries to live a successful, well-balanced life. Money does make life......

Acts

...Notes on the British Acts People came to America seeking religious independence and economic success. Instead, British rule prevented them from experiencing freedom in taxation, land ownership, and government. Without consideration of the colonists, the British established several "Acts" of taxation. Proclamation of 1763: It closed the frontier of colonial expansion and the colonists thought that all they have been working for was going to be for nothing. The Quartering Act: Ordered the local government to give housing to and provisions for the British soldiers. Sugar Act Act to raise fund on sugar and wine. Stamp Act: A tax on every piece of printed paper like news paper and legal documents. Though the tax wasn’t big they thought it was rude to tax them on paper and unfair. They thought it would lead to bigger taxes. The Intolerable Acts: The Intolerable Acts was a name used to describe a series of act passed by the British Parliament . These acts caused outrage in the 13 colonies which lead to resistance. The quartering act, the sugar act, and the stamp act where all intolerable acts. These where the acts that lead to the revolutionary war. There were many years when the Colonists were ignored by Britain. The colonists became accustomed to the laws they created themselves. When the British discovered the colonists did not obey their laws and instead were governing themselves, they tried to enforce the old laws. By the late......

Act Like an Adult

...An adult is someone who is mature and responsible. Adulthood does not come easy, you take on numerous of new responsibilities as you mature into an adult like; having a career so you can pay bills, buying the car you always wanted, or even dating. As you mature and growing acting like an adult comes easier. Adults make wise decisions, and think about the repercussions that they would face if they make a childish decision. You have to go through those childish phases to see what it takes to not only be, but act like an adult. Once you go through those trials and tribulations’ acting like an adult becomes extremely easier. Some may argue that people aren’t adults due to their age, but in fact it’s not the age it is the mental capacity of an individual. Take the military for example, when you enlist to fight and defend your country people don’t think about the fact that most of the fighting force is probably 17, 18, or 19 year old that go on those front lines. They think of the service member as an adult, because civilians know that it takes someone of a certain mental capacity to knowingly know that they might not come back from Afghanistan, or Iraq. Acting like an adult is being completely prepared for anything that may happen. Everything isn’t for sure going to go a certain way, but you make the decisions that would classify you as acting as a child or an adult. Your persona reflects on the kind of adult you are; one that doesn’t accept defeat or the one that does....

Act/561 Sox Act

...The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 Brandice Vasquez, University of Phoenix July 22, 2012 Linda Moore As businesses progress throughout the years, so must laws and regulations to ensure legal business practices remain ethical. Unfortunately, rules and regulations must be made because regrettable actions from large corporations are tainted with greed and power. Corporate Governance Within the past few years headlines have told distressing stories of unethical practices from large corporations such as Merrill Lynch, Enron, Martha Stewart, Adelphia, Boeing, Rite Aid, Xerox, and many more (Arjoon, 2013). According to Arjoon (2013), the definition of corporate governance, “is the system by which business corporations are directed and controlled. The corporate governance structure specifies the distribution of rights and responsibilities among different participants in the corporation, such as, the board, managers, shareholders and other stakeholders and spells out the rules and procedures for making decisions in corporate affairs. By doing this, it also provides the structure through which the company objectives are set and the means of attaining those objectives and monitoring performance.” The object of corporate governance is to ensure that a corporation is held to strict guidelines that promotes fairness, transparency and accountability, and that any action taking by a manager is of the interest of the major stakeholder groups. Acts

...Acts is believed to be the second part of a two-volume work. The Book of Acts begins with a summary of the previous volume, the Gospel of Luke, and then introduces the second volume. In Acts 1:1-5, Luke describes Jesus' ministry and passion; volume two Acts describes events after Jesus' ascension and the giving of the Holy Spirit. As a literary parallel to Luke-Acts Josephus writes a two-volume work, and introduces the second volume in a similar manner. He states the correct use of somewhat idiosyncratic political titles corroborates the view that the Book of Acts was written by someone historically close to the events narrated, such as Luke was. Lukan authorship of the Book of Acts explains the extensive linguistic agreement between the it and the Gospel of Luke and the details that Luke includes about the church in Antioch, the city from which he hailed. Several secondary sources confirm the Lukan authorship of the Book of Acts. The Muratorian canon states "Moreover the Acts of the Apostles are included in one book. For 'most excellent Theophilus' Luke compiled the individual events that took place in his presence.” The Anti-Marcionite Prologue identifies Luke as the author of a second volume, Acts: "And afterwards the same Luke wrote the Acts of the Apostles." Origen identifies the author of Acts as Luke, the same who wrote the gospel: "Others that it was Luke, he who wrote the gospel and the Acts" (H.E. 6.25.14). Clement of Alexandria accepts Lukan......

...Composition 1 October 4, 2013 Like People especially teenagers create new words everyday and use existing words in different context. The latter can be attributed to teenagers who also use existing words such as “like” in different context. Patricia T O’Conner former editor of The New York Times, author of five books about the English language and writer of the article on language “Like”, states that the word like is the “New Say” and that “I’ve always believed that young people are capable of knowing when to use formal versus informal, written versus spoken English’’ (para.19). This essay will be supporting O’Conner’s Statement using evidence and examples from her article. Throughout O’Connor article “Like” she shows how teenagers now use the word in different contexts, such as quoting, paraphrasing, emphasis, summarizing the inner thoughts of the quoter or quotee, introducing an actual quote as well as attitudes gestures, sarcasm and irony. This is accredited to only teenagers, this is not so as, O’Connor further states that “parent might be using like this way without even realizing it”, she confesses that her husband caught her in the act only the other day he was “like, did you hear what you just said?” (para.20). Linguists call it the”quotative like” (para. 2). Temple University Linguistics professor also known as “Ms. Adjective Muffy E.A Siegel researched the mysteries of like in her article, published in the Journal of Semantics “Like: The Discourse Particle......

...absolutely necessary in order to have a successful career. The first thing that strikes me about education is knowledge gain. Education gives us the knowledge of the world around us. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on everything in life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. Some say, education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding world while knowledge is something very different. They are partly right. But the conversion of information to knowledge is possible because of education. Education makes us capable of interpreting rightly the things perceived. There is no ending to the possibilities and success that a person can have in their life and career. Education is important to me because it cultivates me into mature individual, who are capable of planning for the future and making the right decision. My future is a place where I have to spend the rest of my life. I have many experiences to look forward to and enjoy, and I'll also have different times when things aren't so good. Success

...Madison Searcy McKay English 1001-011X 24 October 2013 Success The definition of success can only be defined by the person defining it. The word success can be taken in several ways. Most learn at a young age that a people have to work hard if they want to be successful, and they spend a big portion of their life striving to become successful. Marketers make people believe that having heaps of money, living in a giant house, driving a 2014 Mercedes Benz, having brand name clothes and the latest technology is what a successful person looks like. For the average person, this is not often the case. Today’s economy and job market makes it difficult for someone without a college education to get a high paying job, and most people cannot afford college. To some success is measured by the amount of money they have; and to others success is measured by the amount of happiness or knowledge they have. My definition of success is someone attaining something that they want. In today’s world, people believe that if one has lots of money and fine luxuries that they are a successful person. In many ways, that is true. Money can make one’s life easier and more comfortable by paying for people to do things for them such as maids or an electrician when something breaks instead of doing it on their own. People work through several years of college to get a good high paying job, and having loads of money can be all one needs to feel successful. Money can buy any material item in this......

...will need to check that the minutes reflect what’s been agreed. If you are negotiating informally (i.e. outside of a committee meeting), you may want to ask the person you have negotiated with to send you an email confirming what has been agreed. SUMMARY • Know what THE STUDENTS want. Think through exactly what you want out of the negotiation- be specific and have valid reasons for why you need what you’re asking for. Knowing what you want, and why, will help you to be clearer and more confident. • Know what THE UNIVERSITY wants. Before you start negotiating, it's important to have an idea of what the University or your particular department would like the outcome to be, too. So think it through - why do they need what you're offering/asking for? And do your research - how can you make the University feel like they've got a good deal? • Be fair. If what you're asking for is fair and justifiable then you're much more likely to get what you want. Try and demonstrate how what you want is reasonable, and you're on the way to getting what you want. • Believe you're worth it. You have to believe that the students deserve the desired outcome. If you don't, the moment you are questioned about it, your argument will fall apart because you don't have enough confidence in it. Believe it, trust yourself - and rehearse it. • Listen carefully. When the other person is talking to you during negotiations, don't use that time to plan your next line of attack - it's......

Like Mother, Like Daughter

...Like Mother, Like Daughter The importance of loving others and loving one’s self must be carefully balanced in anyone’s life. This idea is demonstrated in three generations of the Hsu family. There are two lessons that are taught from mother to daughter: Devotion to family and speaking up for one’s self. These two values sometimes seem to contradict each other. Since they were raised in an Asian culture, which emphasizes on family devotion, their actions tend to lean towards it. As a result, these individuals lose their voice in the process. The lesson of family devotion that An-mei’s mother displays is probably the most moving and powerful example. Even though she has been disowned, cussed at, and chased out of the house by her own family, she continues to treat her mother-in-law with respect and love, even to the point of cutting out her own flesh in order to cure her mother-in-law for the last time, despite knowing that the odds were against her. Seeing this with her own eyes, An-mei becomes a very devoted mother to her children. When her son, Bing, falls into the Pacific Ocean, she jumps into the water where Bing fell despite the fact that she doesn’t know how to swim. The next day, she tirelessly goes to the place where Bing fell and offers prayers to God and her precious sapphire ring, the only thing she has from her mother, to the Coiling Dragon in order to get Bing back. Rose also learns this lesson; however, she misunderstands it and takes it too far. When she......
