Amy Chua

...Essay Amy Chua is obviously very opinionated. There is a lot of controversy surrounding her memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, in which she was very harsh towards her daughters and made it clear that her parenting methods were better than those of a Western parent. There is no manual on parenting, but how do we know when we as parents cross the line between being concerned for our child’s future and being overbearing? Being a parent myself, I know firsthand that it gets frustrating and sometimes, that inner control can be lost. Amy demonstrated this challenge plenty of times. I acknowledge that Amy may have thought she was motivating her children to be strong, successful women but I don’t think she let them have a proper childhood. It’s sad how not once throughout the entire book was it ever mentioned that the girls went to the movies or to the mall. Amy did not let her girls initiate anything. She didn’t allow them to make mistakes on their own or to be themselves. When they look back on their childhood, they will have no fun memories to remember. It will always be about what their mother wanted. Nevertheless, she did a good job raising the girls. From the beginning of the memoir, Amy compared Eastern and Western parenting. There is no doubt in my mind that most Chinese parents do raise “stereotypically successful” children but anyone can raise a successful child. I also don’t doubt the love that Amy has for her children. My problem with this is that Amy......

...in 1987, and concentrates on the production of natural and organic meals. The company has dramatically expanded its product range in the 22 years since its founding from its one initial vegetable pot pie and in the fiscal year 2008, recorded revenues of 240million USD. The global economic crisis has been problematic for Amy’s Kitchen, as consumers seeking to make savings to their household budgets have reduced their spending on organic and natural food. However, core customers remain and many will continue to both regularly purchase the brand and be unpaid ambassadors for it, which has been part of its marketing success since its inception. SUMMARY • The Amy’s Kitchen company began as a business in 1987 in California and is named after Amy Berliner, the daughter of the two founders Andy and Rachel Berliner. The company has grown into the leading natural frozen food brand in the US, benefiting from the rise of the organic foods market. • The two founders had previous experience of working in the food industry with the Magic Mountain Herbal Tea Company and in the case of Rachel Berliner’s family from organic farming. This placed them in good stead for the creation of their organics company. • The company is resolutely in favor of natural and organic farming and only uses the freezing process to preserve its finished products. These are highly recommended by its core customers, as it has found in the extensive customer contact the company encourages and uses as part of its......

Amy Winehouse Rise and Fall

...Amy Winehouse was an English singer and songwriter successful in the UK. When most people heard her name they thought of a talented and successful artist. Now when heard, shes known for her mistakes and the problems she brought upon herself and her career. The reputation Winehouse now has, is due to her own choices. As an artist, Amy was percepted as a musical genius and her death left a heavy mark on the music industry. Even though Amy Winehouse became the object of attention because of her bad habits and addictions, many people can learn from her fall from grace. Firstly, Amy Winehouse was born in London, England. Amy’s father was a cab driver and her mother a pharmacist (biography). Due to their music taste, she was brought up around jazz. Many family members on her mother's side were jazz musicians, which became her genre of choice. At a young age she also discovered other genres of music such as rap and hip-hop, leading her to form a group called “Sweet N’ Sour” (everyjoe). Amy was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School where not long after she was expelled from for getting a nose piercing and not applying herself. After coming into contact again with Tyler James, a close friend looking for a jazz vocalist, this led her to a record deal with Island/Universal. After this record deal it led her to move into electric mixes of jazz, pop, soul, and R&B (biography). Amy Tan - Mother's Tongue

...Comprehension 1. Tan is classifying how she uses different Englishes with her writings and with family. With her family, she usually uses “broken” English, and with her writing she uses “professional” English. 2. I believe that she introduces the categories in paragraphs 7 and 8. I believe she identified the categories at a right time because she begins by talking about her family and work, and then she introduces her categories. 3. Yes, Amy Tan goes into explaining the categories by sharing personal experiences. Amy does not treat both equally. I do not see it as a problem because there is no way to treat the Englishes equally when you use them in a different form. 4. Amy believes that her mother’s limited English is a problem in department stores, banks, and restaurants. 5. Her mother’s English has an effect on her life because of how broken it is she needs to pretend to be her at points, watch her mother be treated poorly, and go through several bad situations. 6. She says that math is precise and had a specific answer, as for in English was assigned several questions where she had to fill in the blank and get “bland combinations” as answers. No, I do not think her problems come from her family’s language skills. I believe that it’s pretty much an excuse that she is using, being an Asian American, and it all depends on the person to limit themselves to the English language or not. 7. She offers the explanations that Asian Americans might come from a “broken”......

Amy: a Short Lived Story

...Amy I had left Flagstaff for Phoenix. No job prospects and no place to live except in my car. I had been on the brink of despair before, but now I had reached the end of my rope. No money and no hope, I contemplated committing suicide but fate intervened. While having a cup of coffee in a mom and pop restaurant in downtown Scottsdale, I came across an ad in the Arizona Republic for a live-in aide for a female adult who has Multiple Sclerosis. I answered the ad immediately. Amy sounded nice on the phone even though I could barely understand her. When we met, we connected with each other immediately. The lady who was living with Amy was lazy and rude to Amy and I felt immediate resentment toward her. Maddie was ignorant and hostile and we disliked each other at first sight. Amy wanted Maddie gone now, but he said Maddie could stay until he found a new live-in aide. Amy and I talked for hours and I knew we clicked. Soon Maddie was gone and I was Amy's aide. We were both in our mid-thirties and had rough childhoods. For the first few weeks we got along impressively. Then strange things began to happen. At first I dismissed these strange occurrences to my own lack of memory. Amy could not have done them since she was unable to move from her wheelchair. Amy began to sit alone in the dark in her wheelchair and say words about the devil and demons that troubled me more and more as I found Amy getting more hostile towards me. When I asked her what was the matter she gave me a look......

Amy Winehouse

...The sordid details of Amy Winehouse's final hours emerged today, with claims that she bought a cocktail of narcotics including cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine. Although the exact cause of death has not yet been released by police, it is claimed she was seen buying drugs from a dealer in Camden just after 10:30pm on Friday. The reports emerged as her family released an emotional statement in which they said they were 'bereft' by her early death. 'Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives,' they said. 'We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.' Winehouse was found dead at her London home on Saturday afternoon. A source told The People that she was seen buying substances, believed to be cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and ketamine leading up to the hours before her death. She is also thought to have been drinking heavily, which may have been the trigger of a lethal concoction of drugs and alcohol. The source told the newspaper: 'Amy seemed determined to have a big one on Friday night. 'She was out in Camden on Friday evening, but seemed determined to carry on the party back at her flat. 'None of us know who was with her into the early hours of Saturday. But getting out of it was clearly her main priority of the night.' Another source from one Camden pub told the tabloid that they had also seen Amy buying cocaine from a......

Todd and Amy Case Study

... Todd and Amy Case Study (Title IX) For the case involving Todd Martin and Amy Craft, I think that both of them are at fault in this predicament. During my time in college I have witnessed situations of the sort. It never turns out pretty but regret is basically guaranteed. As an adult you have to be responsible for your actions and that includes knowing your alcohol and moral limits. I don’t necessarily agree with Todd’s conviction; I don’t think charges should have even been placed against Todd. I don’t feel I have enough information to make a guilty conviction for one specific participant. This could easily be a false accusation or Todd could have had sex with Amy without her full or conscious consent. I feel that a resolution to the situation that would be fair to all parties would be to learn from this matter. They both were being irresponsible; Amy could have monitored her drinking better and Todd could have called campus police for assistance in getting Amy home. Both of them should bare minimum have to speak with a campus counselor. This situation could also allow either of them to participate in some awareness classes whether they be alcohol awareness or sexual abuse/discrimination awareness classes. This could even drive Amy (or Todd if he felt so inclined) to maybe start a club/group on campus for other females and even males who feel they have been a victim of rape or participated in over consumption of alcohol leading to questionable decision making skills. ...
