The Poetry of Bruce Dawe

...of Life Cycle’ says ‘This ten verse poem is a testament to a distinctly Australian invention, Aussie Rules football. Football is portrayed as a religion, is food and drink, is the life-cycle itself. Football nourishes the young and renews the old. Its mythology is life-sustaining. It brings "salvation", the punch-line of the poem.’ In lines 2 and 3 (‘...beribboned cots, having already begun a lifetime’s barracking’), Dawe uses symbolism or ‘religious parallel’ to make a first tie between religion and football. The child being wrapped in the team’s colours is similar to the way a baby is wrapped in cloth during his or her christening. Throughout the poem, he shows the reader that football rituals are as regular as rituals from a religious calendar. The fans are in constant participation in football related events; they stalk, eat, drink and breathe the football. The line ‘...The voice of God booms from the stands’ serves as both a contrast of images and Onomatopoeia (Booms). Other techniques that are found in this text concern the clever use of certain words. Bruce Dawe included puns such as ‘wrapped’ and ‘wrapt’. The use of double meanings is also evident with the words Tigers, tussle, Demons, Saints and Lions. As one may notice, ‘Demons’ and ‘Saints’ are in fact the names of football teams but also serve as an allusion to religion. He also uses alliteration in lines sixteen (“pies and potato crisps”) and twenty five (“passion persisting”). An important technique in this......

Aussie Pies

...A01-06-0012 Graeme Rankine Aussie Pies (A) “Wow, Australians really love their meat pies,” Anna Amphlett said to Andrew Ferris as they sat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground watching the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles. “I’ve seen people eat three meat pies straight, then wash them down with a full liter of Fosters Lager,” she said as she looked across to see Sydney win the 2005 Premiership with a score of 58-54. According to observers, “Sydney has ended the longest premiership drought in AFL history in the most emotional and heart-stopping fashion imaginable by beating the West Coast Eagles by four points in the most exciting and closest grand final for nearly 40 years.”1 “But it’s not just at footy matches,” Ferris noted, “they eat them all the time, just like we eat hamburgers and hotdogs back in the States.” Ferris thought about the number of pies eaten by the 100,000 people attending the AFL Grand Final. Amphlett and Ferris lived in Seattle, Washington, but were on a vacation to Australia to visit the Great Barrier Reef and attend the Grand Final in Melbourne. “I wonder if Americans might develop a following for the Aussie meat pie,” he said to Anna… “perhaps there’s a business opportunity back home.” Australian Meat Pies The meat pie, a hand-sized pot pie made with pastry and filled with minced (ground) beef and gravy, is consumed as a takeaway food snack in Australia (see Exhibit 1 for an......

Pies in the Sky Case Study

...Kenneth Holcomb 1/26/16 “Battling Pies in the Sky” In the case “Pies in the Sky” Katherine White is the Director of Marketing at Terrace Hospital, a 125-bed, not-for-profit rural hospital providing general medical and surgical services. Terrace hospital is located in Lexington, a rural community which has a population of 14,682. Katherine works under Mr. Peter Brooks, the Administrator. The problem is Mr. Brooks routinely gets overly excited about his ideas and moves forward with his ideas without proper consultation from his team. Peter’s ideas always produce adverse consequences, but the damage is usually minimal. This time, though, Katherine and her fellow senior managers believe Mr. Brooks will cause real financial harm to Terrace Hospital if he goes through with his idea. Mr. Brooks wants to place a clinic in a new market and needs Katherine to fast-track marketing communications materials for a grand opening less than 3 months away. Though clinics in the past have been opened practically overnight by Terrace Hospital, they were opened in rural territories with little to no competition. Fairmont is cosmopolitan and considered the most competitive market in the region. Also, the marketing budget of Terrace is miniscule to the marketing budget of its competitors in Fairmont and their associated medical centers in Clearwater. Furthermore, the referrals from the clinic in Fairmont to the hospital in Lexington would be nonexistent because Lexington is out of the transit...

A Finger in Too Many Pies

...Besmanos, Christine Claire D. Prof. Myrna Cortez AC09301 Final Period A Finger in Too Many Pies Good afternoon everyone, today I prepared a speech entitled “A finger in too many pies”. A finger in too many pies means getting involved in many things. I just think that it’s appropriate for us since we are pre-occupied and will always be pre-occupied with a lot of things to do. We are so busy with our studies that make me wonder, do we still pay attention to other things in our life? Do we still put our fingers in many pies? Well I have three pies to offer to you today. First is spiritual pie. This is our relationship with God. With all those articles to memorize, handouts to answer and quizzes to take, do we still find time to go to church every Sunday? Do we give thanks more than what we ask for? If Satan can’t get you to sin, he will make you busy until you can no longer pray. We must always stay close to Him. Of all the pies, this is the most important. If you have this pie, you will always be provided with what you need. Second is the relationship pie. This is your relationship with the people in your life. Friends are not that much issue since you see them at school but how about your family? Our parents as the case maybe, we are so busy growing up and we always forget that they are growing old too. Or when you’re at home, do you have a little time with your siblings? Not all of us have a perfect family but you should spend......
