An ergogenic aid is any substance or phenomenon that enhances performance. An ergo lytic agent is one that has a detrimental effect on performance. The ergogenic aid I would like to talk about is amino acids. Amino acids have been proposed to have special ergogenic properties. L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid, has been proposed to increase aerobic endurance performance through its effects on the CNS, acting as an analgesic and delaying fatigue (Kenney).
For my workouts I take a supplement called amino energy. It is made by optimum nutrition. Its slogan is “Amino Acid Powder for Increased Energy. Train Longer and Harder with Intense Energy and Focus.” I have been using it on and off for a few years now. It has an amino blend of the following: * Micronized Taurine, Micronized L-Glutamine, Micronized L-Arginine, Micronized L-Leucine, CarnoSyn® Beta-Alanine, Micronized Citrulline, Micronized L-Isoleucine, Micronized L-Valine, Micronized L-Tyrosine, Micronized L-Histidine, Micronzed L-Lysine, Micronized L-Phenylalanine, Micronzed L-Threonine, Micronized L-Methionine.
Of these, the three amino acids that we are concerned about are the valine, Leucine, and the isoleucine. These are our BCAA’s. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) have been postulated to work in combination with L-tryptophan to delay fatigue, primarily through CNS mechanisms. I can feel the difference between my motivation and longevity of my workouts when I take this product. It is doing everything that the book describes that it should do. Which is theoretically, increasing the BCAA would reduce the ratio and delay the onset of fatigue. I typically do not do a lot of running cardio such has treadmill, cycling, or Stairmaster, but I have used this when I boxed during college. During that time I was also able to train for longer periods of time. I did not experience any shortness of breath or over…...

...creatine kinase, and lactate Dehydrogenase values, with a deferred onset of muscle tenderness after exercising, when supplemented with the branch -chained Amino Acids (Nemet & Eliakim, 2007). During exercise vital AA’s were found to be the stimulators of protein synthesis which would be a sign of extra needed protein or Amino Acids supplementation. It had been found supplementation of glucose and Amino Acids after resistance training does not significantly boost muscle strength. Therefore supplementing the Athlete’s with protein or AA has not proven to be beneficial and can be harmful. Even though statistically it is not significant but there was still a boost in muscle strength in the measured strength parameters. Therefore BCAA supplementation is still in controversy therefore it is an invitation to more studies Reference: Nemet D.,& Eliakim, A. (2007),. Protein and Amino Acid Supplementation in Sport. ...branched-chain amino acids to avoid brain injury. The reason for conducting the study was the fact that in lieu of managing a diet, children commonly suffer metabolic decompensation as a result of catabolic stress associated with various illnesses tied to MSUD. The underlying system linked with decompensation and brain injury is still severely misunderstood. The scientists assessed biochemical, behavioral and neuropathological changes that occurred during encephalopathy in a group of model mice especially formulated for this study. The study revealed that intense brain leucine accumulation displaces other essential amino acids resulting in united mechanisms of neurotransmitter depletion and disruption of normal brain growth and development involving BCAA growth restriction and energy deprivation. In conclusion, what heightens society’s need for MSUD awareness is the idea that death is a likely result and there’s still so much that we don’t understand about this disorder. What I found most interesting were the new ideas for future studies formulated as a result and the fact that you always learn something from an experiment. Regardless of if it’s what not to do next time, the scientists still advanced in their field of study. For example, a lot of scientists suggested that classic and intermediate mice models along with norleucine were very effective in studying potential treatment and brain injury. Another fascinating thought was the fact that inbreeding is the cause for......

...while we're largely told to avoid fat in high quantities getting at least some is actually crucial to our diet. Not only is it important for our skin, hair and joints, but it also helps us to break down and utilize protein. B12 is actually a crucial substance and deficiency can cause serious problems such as nerve damage, low energy and problems utilizing calcium which can lead to osteoporosis. B12 is also crucial for brain damage and some theories state that we may have even become omnivorous in order to help develop our brain function. While it is possible to get B12 through fortified sources, this simply isn't as beneficial as getting it naturally as again it isn't as bio-available. By supplementing your diet with B12, fatty acids and BCAAs you can almost counter the negative side effects of vegetarianism on your health, but you will be spending a lot of money in order to do so and popping a lot of pills. ...performance because there is an increased carbohydrate availability, which compensates for greater carbohydrate utilisation. There are few studies that have studied the long-term effects of high and low carbohydrate intake during training and the adaptations of each. In a short term study conducted by Simonsen et al., carbohydrate intake and performance adaption was compared using a moderate carbohydrate intake of 5g.kg.b.w.-1 and a high intake of 10g.kg.b.w.-1. Upon completion of the 4-week trial period the study showed that there was a power increase of 1.6% for the moderate carbohydrate diet and 10.7% for the high intake diet. Branch chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation increases the availability and utilisation of BCAA, which is theorised to decrease catabolism during heavy training. BCAA have been shown to reduce central fatigue whish during training may help improve training adaptations and strength6. (2) In this nutrition plan protein intake is at 1.7g.kg.b.w.-1 this is based on the protein requirements for resistance exercise is greater because amino acids may be oxidised during exercise and the resistance exercise increases protein synthesis and additional protein is necessary to repair damage to muscles. As a result of resistance exercise muscle protein synthesis increases, as does protein degradation to a lesser extent. The balance between these two outcomes determines the net protein balance. In order to maximise strength and hypertrophy......

Amino Acids and How They Relate to Athletics ~Sci/241

...Acids and How They Relate to Athletics SCI/241~Nutrition July 8, 2010 Amino acids serve in many different ways in an athlete body. Typically amino acids were prescribed many years ago known as a “branched-chain amino acids (BCAA)” (Weider, 2003), characterized as supplement for body building. Muscles are generally made up of amino acids, athletes are encouraged to supplement with the loss. Another characteristic of BCAA is to generate energy. Amino acids taken before a workout will strengthen the athlete muscles. The intake of protein is encouraged before a workout also. Boost in the brain of an athlete mental capacity is consumed with the amino acids before a work out. However, an athlete must mentally stable their mind to do a tedious workout. Your immune system must functions at a healthy status at all times, in order to be an athlete. This is why amino acids help promote the building of a strong immune system. Sometimes the lack of a nutrient in the body can have an effect on the brain. Taking precautions is recommended to insure that supplemental intake of BCAA may not cause any problems to the brain; one should consult a physician before taking BCAA. Gnc and the 4 P's

...GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified 100% Whey Protein is offered in chocolate and vanilla flavors to satisfy customers’ tastes and preferences, thereby appealing to a wider range of people and prospective buyers. One of GNC’s biggest competitors is Bodybuilding.com, an online retailer that offers very similar products. One of the leading whey protein brands on Bodybuilding.com is Cellucor, a product that contends greatly with GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified 100% Whey Protein. Comparatively, GNC’s weigh protein contains 8 grams* of Branched Chain Amino Acids, while Cellucor only contains 5.5 grams* (*grams per scoop of whey). These BCAAs must be ingested as they are the basis of protein and the nine essential amino acids that the human body cannot create itself. GNC offers a higher quality product than Bodybuilding.com with its higher levels of BCAAs. Additionally, Cellucor is offered in ten different flavors, which is rather high for whey protein products. Having so many different options might appeal to more people, but could be daunting to first-timers who are not sure of what they are looking for. Too many alternatives can dissuade consumers from making purchases, and since GNC only offers two flavors, they are removing a lot of stress that shopping often creates. ...to make up our protein macros when we are on the go, or in a rush. 20 w w w. L D N M u s c l e .c o m cutting guide v3 Supplements and discount codes BCAAs Plasma leucine levels are elevated when we eat a meal (that contains leucine!), stimulating protein synthesis. Once plasma leucine levels reach or exceed the ‘leucine threshold’ your body has been signalled to perform the maximum amount of protein synthesis and any additional leucine (from extra protein) will have little additional affect. Plasma leucine levels gradually fall as your body utilises it for protein synthesis or production of energy, so once they return to baseline values, we eat again! When we work out, we are damaging and breaking down muscle and we are also using a lot of energy. The body will use plasma glucose and plasma leucine for energy at this point; so to minimise the amount of protein our body breaks down while working out we take an ‘intra-workout’ BCAA supplement (drink or tablets). Pure BCAAs are highly available so make their way into the bloodstream quickly, elevating plasma leucine levels and ‘switching on’ protein synthesis to avoid potential muscle catabolism. We take 6-8g of BCAAs intra-workout (a dose larger than 4g of leucine will have little additional effect). If you want to know more about BCAAs, read this article. 21 w w w. ...A common assertion in the US is that heavy consumption of turkey meat results in drowsiness, due to high levels of tryptophan contained in turkey.[18][20] However, the amount of tryptophan in turkey is comparable to that contained in most other meats.[19][21] Furthermore, postmeal drowsiness may have more to do with what is consumed along with the turkey, carbohydrates in particular.[46] It has been demonstrated in both animal models[47] and humans[48][49][50] that ingestion of a meal rich in carbohydrates triggers release of insulin. Insulin in turn stimulates the uptake of large neutral branchedchain amino acids (BCAA), but not tryptophan (an aromatic amino acid) into muscle, increasing the ratio of tryptophan to BCAA in the blood stream. The resulting increased tryptophan ratio reduces competition at the large neutral amino acid transporter (which transports both BCAA and aromatic amino acids), resulting in more uptake of tryptophan across the blood–brain barrier into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).[51][52] Once in the CSF, tryptophan is converted into serotonin in the raphe nuclei by the normal enzymatic pathway.[47][49] The resultant serotonin is further metabolised into melatonin by the pineal gland.[12] Hence, this data suggests that "feastinduced drowsiness"— or postprandial somnolence — may be the result of a heavy meal rich in carbohydrates, which indirectly increases the production of sleeppromoting melatonin in the brain.[47][48][49][50] Resear......

Protein Article Research

...A person cannot survive without amino acids in their diet, which is why they are so important. They perform many metabolic functions that are vital to the body, and are the reason amino acids are so important for athletes. The usual intake of amino acids comes from foods like seafood, meat, and legumes. Some people, mainly athletes will use an amino acid supplement to further their intake. The amount intake of amino acids for a regular person is 1.2 grams whereas for an athlete or body builder, it is approximately 2.2 grams. Amino acids help with the building of muscles. Branch chain amino acids (BCAA) can help gain muscle tissue which in turn helps build bigger muscles. Amino acids also help in the building of stamina. Cross country runners for instance take a high amount of amino acids to prevent damage to muscle tissue since it is an extremely strenuous activity. Recovering from fatigue quicker by the intake of amino acids is another reason athletics take them. Amino acids actually slow the production of lactic acid, which causes fatigue. Besides physically fatigue, amino acids also help with mental fatigue. Serotonin in the brain can actually make a person lose willpower. When taking amino acids, it slows the production of serotonin. These are the many reasons why it is important for an athlete to take almost doubled the amount of amino acids of a non-athletic person. Fitness Builds Health. (2007).
