Being Part of Something Bigger
The quote by Albert Einstein talks of human beings being disconnected from the Universe. Implying that we care only about ourselves and those closest to us he disregards the capacity for human empathy. Referring to our attitudes as prisons that keep us from seeing and appreciating the rest of the world, he suggests we can free ourselves by opening up our hearts and minds, embracing all creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Admitting we may never reach this lofty goal, he admits that simply the pursuit of it would be a great improvement.
I see the quote as a hasty generalization although there is certainly value in thinking of all living creatures as we see ourselves. More involvement not only in other people but in all living things would at the least establish a connection that may make us think before we act. When he describes us as delusional I would disagree. Delusional implies we don’t even consider the consequences of actions. I see us less as delusional and more as self- centered. When he talks of “a part limited in time and space”, he seems to believe that if we were around the planet longer we may have a better appreciation for the devastation we are responsible for. I see that as a valid point. Although I think we see all that is around us I don’t think we consider the cause and effect of our actions. If each of us would experience a loss of our ecosystem that was tangible to us personally then we would probably become more involved in correcting the issue or preventing it from happening again.
Human beings seem to respond better to issues small enough to believe they can have an effect on. The enormity of situations often cause us to throw up our hands believing that nothing we do could have an impact. Breaking down those issues into smaller pieces seems an effective way to get more involvement. I saw the most realistic part of the quote the end where he acknowledges that working toward a solution we may never reach is better than do doing nothing at all.…...

...-One Walking into school after months of not showing up was like walking into a nightmare. I forgot the smell and the peeling paint and the tiled floor. I forgot how the people talk and walk and stare. But being here again, it comes back in huge explosive waves. I feel sick. All I’ve been feeling lately is sick. I search for my locker. All the numbers are wrong, jumbled and unreadable. Asking would mean something is clearly wrong. I hold onto all my books, my backpack pressing hard on my shoulders. The bell rings and it is louder than I remember. I clench my teeth. The sounds resembles nails on a chalkboard, at least to me it does. Every day for two months I went to history class at this time in Mrs. Waters’ room. And now, I have no idea where it is. “Edith,” a girl’s voice says. I turn. “Yeah,” I say to Clara. Clara is the sweetest person on the planet. For the longest time I thought she was super fake because how can someone be that nice all the time. But she just is. “You have Waters still, right?” “Yeah,” I say. She loops her arm around mine. “I’m glad they didn’t change it.” “Me too,” but I don’t really care. Pulling me around corners and through different hallways we end up in history class. The room looks familiar, but a faraway familiar. Like a dream or déjà vu. She sits in the front row right next to the teacher’s desk. I escape to the back, the corner, right next to the window. Clara looks around and then moves to the seat in front of me. “I get it,”......

...web.  They may easily out-compete native species.  They have helped in the decline of native Pila apple snails in south-east Asia. Climatic modeling has shown that they have potential to spread to yet-uninfested parts of the world, including India and Australia, which would suffer hugely. Pomacea canaliculata has a high rate of reproduction and is extremely tough.  Clutches are laid every few weeks and may contain up to 1200 eggs (although 200-300 is more usual).  Hatchlings are voracious feeders, grow quickly (maturing at about 2 months old), and live for about four to six years. Apple snails may aestivate for up to 5 months of the year, meaning that even with drought conditions or imposed drying, they will likely survive.  Their tolerance to pollution and low oxygen levels is high.  They are able to live on many different types of plant matter, as well as decomposing organic matter.  They have been called “eating machines” because they can eat 24 hours a day.  They have an affinity for crops such as rice and taro. Human health threats are also associated with this species.  It may be a vector for disease and parasites such as the lungworm, which may cause the fatal eosinophilic meningoencephalitis disease in humans.  Snails also contribute to skin irritations by being intermediate hosts to the associated trematodes.  Pesticide side-effects include blurring vision and blindness, skin problems, and loss of nails. ...over 200 actual Internet hands. I have proven that these strategies work through more than 7000 hours of actual play on the Internet. Practically all of the strategies presented in (he book regarding Hold'em should also be suitable for the live poker game: however, differences are noted throughout the text between online and live games that require adjustments to your play. In reading any poker book, you should realize that there are many different strategies and styles of poker. Most good players play a tight game, which means they do not play very many hands. Some good players, although much less common, are able to play a loose game, which means they play a decent amount of hands. My approach is "tight aggressive," which basically means being conservative with how many hands I play and playing aggressively once I find a hand I like. I believe this is the best approach for the majority of players and especially beginners. "Test Your Skills" At the end of each chapter is a chapter summary and a section "Test Your Skills" where you can practice the strategies you have learned with actual hands from the Internet. The basic format is that you will be presented with a sequence of events that have occurred during a hand and then you must decide what you would do next. Most of the examples come from the higher limits, although you will see some hands from the lower limits. The strategies at both the limits are similar once you have a good understanding of how the number and......

... “As a woman in this day & age, I am in a position to ask a man what can you do for me that I can’t do for myself? I pay my own bills. I take care of my household without the help of any man…or woman for that matter. I am in the position to ask, ‘What can you bring to the table?’” The man looked at her. Clearly he thought that she was referring to money. She quickly corrected his thought & stated, “I am not referring to money. I need something more. I need a man who is striving for excellence in every aspect of life.” He sat back in his chair, folded his arms, & asked her to explain. She said, “I need someone who is striving for excellence mentally because I need conversation & mental stimulation. I don’t need a simple-minded man. I need someone who is striving for excellence spiritually because I don’t need to be unequally yoked…believers mixed with unbelievers is a recipe for disaster. ...

Sales differ by season with the company so their budget should reflect a similar breakdown. Quarterly budget would be closer to the seasons than just an annual one. Further breakdown of the budget will help spend money more wisely not only where it is needed, but when. Vague Line Items. The budget shows many lines with broad terms and some with no description at except “other”. Other long term liabilities in the amount of $75,000, other accrued expenses $26,000, other utilities and services $54,000, and $170,000 in other general and admin expenses. A more specificbudget will help the company identify where money is being spent, assist management in making better budget decisions, and minimize fraud. Smaller, individual budgets such as a selling budget that itemizes things like equipment, sales salaries, radio advertising, and print advertising, would also prove helpful. Inconsistent Entries. Communication seems to be an issue in creating the budget for Competition Bikes. The production budget shows the plus desired ending inventory as made to order. Yet, the plus target ending inventory in the raw materials budget shows 140. Part of Being Human

...Dillan Middlebrooks English 848 Chris Dowling 09/29/2014 Part of being human If there’s one thing that we all could use more of it would be self-control. Look at the least successful people you know and the most successful. The one thing that makes these two types of people different is their ability to do the right actions and do them continuously. Recently I read The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D.it first explains that willpower is an instinct, like stress, that protects us from ourselves. Then the book goes through ways we sabotage our own willpower and she also gives strategies to improve your willpower. One thing that The Willpower Instinct made crystal clear was that everyone struggles in some way; it could be addiction, distractions, temptations, and procrastinating. Motivation is key to resist our short-term pleasures. “When you find your biggest want power…bring it to mind whenever you find yourself most tempted to give in or give up.”(75) Whenever you are on the verge of giving up you need to just remember where you want to be and it will help you get to your overall goal. The beginning of my senior year of high school I was 80 credits behind so I had to take seven classes the first semester, but I only passed half of those and then I had ten classes the final semester in order to graduate with three credits over the requirement. Along the way I had people telling me that I “could” and “couldn’t” graduate. I definitely wanted to just......

...driven: “People learn in response to need. When people cannot see the need for what is being taught, they ignore it, reject it, or fail to assimilate it in any meaningful way”. Barrows (1996) identifies six core aspects of PBL: student-centered learning, learning in small groups, tutor/facilitator rather than instructor, authentic problems presented without prior student preparation or study, problems used as a means to obtain both knowledge and problem-solving skills, and student responsibility to obtain relevant information needed to solve the problems. As these core elements indicate, successful PBL outcomes go beyond the mere acquisition of information or knowledge of a field or subject because (a) skills needed for problem solving are also learned in an experiential way and especially because (b) students also learn about themselves and each other because of PBL’s team approach. For example, students in one study reported learning to appreciate the difficulties and benefits of working in teams, arriving at a new sense of themselves as active contributors to a group and gaining a new sense of higher expectations for others in the group (Lycke et al., 2006). PBL thus presents learning as social and as something acquired in action; in this way, PBL provides the necessary but sometimes ignored social/cultural context for learning that will be used in practice. That is, learning about something in order to solve problems also means learning to be a practitioner, a member of a......

Something Bigger Than You and I

...Something Bigger Then You and I The Story of JR By: Angelenia Cannizzaro-Ndrecaj In loving memory of Nichols Sumner Juvenile Delinquents come in all shapes sizes and colors, there is no one way to describe a “Juvenile Delinquent”. There are many theories on how a child emerges into a juvenile delinquent. However to pinpoint one upbringing or another will cause a juvenile delinquent no one can really say. Juvenile delinquents are minors, usually defined as being between the ages of 10 and 18, who have committed some act that violates the law. These acts aren't called “crimes” as they would be for adults. Rather, crimes committed by minors are called “delinquent acts.” Once a delinquent is over the age of 18 they are considered an adult and all incidents will be considered crimes. Instead of a trial, the juvenile has an “adjudication,” after which she or he receives a “disposition” and a sentence. However, juvenile proceedings differ from adult proceedings in a number of ways. Delinquent acts generally fall into two categories. The first type of delinquent act is one that would be considered a crime had an adult committed it. For particularly serious crimes, some jurisdictions will even try children as adults. When children are tried as juveniles, on the other hand, parents are often required to pay the court costs for the child. The second type of delinquent act is one that wouldn’t normally be a crime had an adult......

Explain the Factors Which Have Contributed to Scandinavia Being Named the Most Advanced Part of the Planet? (12) Scandinavia; Norway, Sweden and Denmark Being Named as the Most Advanced Part of the World Causes Debate

...1. Explain the factors which have contributed to Scandinavia being named the most advanced part of the planet? (12) Scandinavia; Norway, Sweden and Denmark being named as the most advanced part of the world causes debate on both sides of the spectrum, with factors supporting each side of the argument. On one hand Scandinavia can be seen as the most advanced part of the planet due to its economical stance. All countries feature in the top 13 of a World Bank GDP per Capita survey with Norway sitting in 2nd. This economical stature could come not just from the vast natural resources in the area, but the emphasis on education and R&D in the area. Within the three countries an average of 4% of their GDP is spend on education, 0.5% above European average. This can be highlighted by the fact on average between the three countries 33% of the population is educated to tertiary level, the European average for this is 25%. The well educated population not only leads to high paying jobs in the tertiary and quaternary sector but also to an increased level of Patents due to the all-round smarter population. On average 283 patents (per million people) were filled in Scandinavia, giving them the exclusive rights to such inventions, again they were all vastly above the European average of 186. As well as economically and through education Scandinavia can be assessed as the most advanced part of the world due to their use of technology. Technology use, through a well educated population...

...great black clouds circled overhead drawing nearer and nearer to number 666, the demanding winds fed into the clouds screaming for my attention. As the house drew nearer everything around me became quieter and more distant- the trees murmuring couldn’t be heard anymore and the cold iron gates were far, far back in the distance. From the outside, the house was tall and thin, made from large dark grey stones that had a rough feel and were sandwiched together by crumbling cement. Climbing plants grew up the house winding around the drainpipes grabbing for the little sunlight that reached this desolate place. The windows rattled vigorously from the howling wind as though they were about to fall out of the frames that were made from rotting wood being eaten away by a woodworm. A few potted plants lay next to the door, once there for neat presentation now wilted and brown, almost certainly dead. Cobwebs covered the corners of the door like tiny black spiders treading towards their prey. The door had been left ajar and great shadows slunk out of the open doorway with terrifying grace. A musty, dank odor crept into my nose and the house was dead silent except for the intermittent creaks and moans caused by my light tread. The hallway was dull and smelt of dust mixed with old age. Paintings hung up of what looked like important and rich people, their eyes following my every move. Beneath the portrait were a few shards of scattered, broken glass beneath which were decaying, rat-eaten......

...give us a direct benefit. When space technology has advanced far enough, we will be able to leave this Planet earth of ours in large numbers and live among the stars. This will solve our population/environment/resource/energy problems for a very, very time. It may take centuries, even millennia, but we will not get the technology without experimenting with it. Possible organisms to be found in space offer exactly the same value to the scientific community and maybe more, and maybe the conditions would be far more extreme than the ones that have been discovered on earth. Also, thought this it is valid that a large proportion of earth is unexplored, it’s not as thought we’re exploring space instead of our own planet. The effort that is being made to explore the ocean floor is just as great as that of space exploration. I mean, learning about the ocean floor, while that is important of course, is no more important than space. I don’t know what is there that we eagerly have to know about the ocean floor. Honestly, I think that the only reason we may be so interested in exploring our planet is because it is our planet, our habitat, this is where we are from and we humans have grown up with a ridiculous impression that we must know our environment before branching out to others, when in reality, doing both at the same time is a classic opportunity that we seem to be taking for granted. First Priority, Second Priority First of all, the goal here is to create a kind of......

Bigger Person

...Bigger Person Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win,” demonstrates how people are quick to judge and how being the bigger person pays off. Being the bigger person results in a quicker solution than arguing about the topic. Being the bigger person additionally enables the person to feel good about themselves. They can view themselves as more mature and strong-minded. Gandhi is teaching his audience how to win a fight against ignorant people through this quote. “First they ignore you,” is referring to the beginning of the argument when people judge you, and do not take you seriously. Therefore, they ignore you. Ignoring the person who is talking does not do anything, but make the person being ignored feel disrespected. An example of this in life would be a professor. If students are talking while the professor is speaking it is perceived as very disrespectful. Because the students are talking, they are ignoring the opportunity to learn from the professor. Racism could be another real-life example of this idea. For example, if in a group of people there is only one person of a different race, this person may not be heard for what he or she has to offer. That is not justified because all people should be treated equally. Another example of discrimination could be if a person is judged as not as intelligent as the people surrounding them. Maybe that person is just quiet and afraid to speak. The group could......

Affirmative Action Bigger Than Diveristy

...Affirmative Action: Bigger than Diversity Is affirmative action bigger than diversity? This is the question that comes to my mind since there has been much debate on whether or not Affirmative action laws are still needed. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in October on Fisher v. University of Texas, a case that could overturn or uphold the 2003 Grutter v. Bollinger ruling that found affirmative-action policies to be constitutional. (Nhan, 2012) Of course it’s still needed and it’s constitutional since it reinforces the Constitution that is based on all men being created equal. And without this reinforce able law I don’t believe that the Constitution will hold true. And if Affirmative action was not still needed then why is there so much debate about it. Affirmative action has gone way beyond diversity, it’s all about power. This leads me to my first point when affirmative action was put in place white America lost their control and now they are trying to do whatever it takes to get that control back. One of the biggest blows to this countries ego was when the first black president was put into office, this really struck nerve. Finally, getting rid of affirmative action is just another way to shake up the confidence of minorities and women so that they break them down to where society feels they should be. This is just a fraction of why I feel affirmative action is still needed and society is just playing the part until someone makes the under minding......
