Getting Familiar with Excel (graded) |
Excel was introduced in 1985. Since then, it has become a standard business tool. In this thread, discuss the different features of Excel that make it a valuable business tool. In addition, discuss why Excel skills are so important in today’s job market.

I had taken a class in Excel years ago, but since I haven’t used it in such a long time, I am rather “rusty” at it. Hopefully it will start coming back to me as we progress, because I realize that I have forgotten so much. I do remember that I was both fascinated and excited, getting a glimpse of just some of its possibilities. In the workplace, though the initial set-up may take some time, it would be a tremendous help in the long run, when it was completed, by: * Reducing mathematical errors. * Supplying instant recalculations when inputted amounts needed to be corrected. * Charts and graphs could be easily prepared for those of us that grasp things better visually. * There is a security option if you want to make certain that it isn’t tampered with. * You can allow others to mark-up suggested changes; with you still having the final say. * With its reusability, the formulas are already prepared; ready for the following year’s numbers to simply be plugged in.
A few of its benefits for small businesses were listed by Kathy Burns-Millyard, in her article, “How Do Businesses Use Excel?”: * Scheduling: This is helpful when a department is allotted a certain amount of man-hours and you have those employees that are considered full-time and need to get the required number of hours to keep their benefits; likewise, those employees that are part-time who are not allowed to get over a certain amount of hours. All the while, trying to make sure that all the bases are covered, without going over the allotment or into over-time. * Basic Accounting:…...

...Service: In here the users can get as many soft wares as they need during the rental period and need not install but can run on their own terminals. Cloud Business Intelligence 4 The advantage of cloud computing is without installing all the need items you can use them by renting. Cloud Business Intelligence: Cloud BI represents a way for reporting and analysis solutions to be developed, installed, and consumed more easily due to its lower cost and easier deployment. Ideally, a cloud-based business intelligence platform makes use of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), complements and extends today's platform-asa-service (PAAS), utilizes an on-demand, virtualized, elastic software and hardware environment, and delivers application-level functionality as a service (commonly referred to as software-as-a-service). Additionally, a business intelligence tool should easily deploy and even migrate from on-premise to the cloud (and back), providing a new kind of Web-based flexibility that accompanies the most modern platform architecture. Typically, a cloud-based BI platform is used to solve one of three primary customer needs: 1. As a horizontal BI tool to deliver standalone, internally facing reporting and analysis applications -- probably using a traditional relational database (or data mart) as the primary source data system. 2. As an application framework or pre-built reporting and analysis template for systems integrators to use for assembling......

...were dismissed at the notion of being able to work at local hospitals in the area. The financing of the BI Hospital derived from the Jewish communities donations. Millions of dollars were donated in order to create an upper class academic medical center that was known not only for the quality of its research and teaching but also for the quality of its care. As time went on capitalism showed its face by driving the local Boston hospital’s to want more market share in their geographic locations. A Dean of Harvard Business School by the name of John McArthur organized a session in which he proposed the Brigham Hospital merge with the Massachusetts General Hospital to create a new organization called Partners Healthcare System. None of the surrounding hospitals in the area were notified when the decision to go ahead with the plan was made. Not only was the merger established because of the growth of market share but the organization would be able to capture a bigger portion of the market and therefore have a greater influence on the insurance companies and the other payers. Negotiating insurance contracts is a very important asset and strategy to the success of the hospital financially. When word broke of the merger other local hospitals felt a need to respond by finding new partners themselves to obtain leverage on the insurance companies as well gain market share. BI started looking for hospital to merge with and found Deaconess to be the best fit. This merger......

Com/155

...Final Essay Katie Beauchamp COM/155 June 16, 2013 Dr. Andrews Many people know someone who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It is confusing how some people use these names interchangeably. While Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have similar characteristics, the treatment for the disease is based on symptoms as well as how the diseases are acquired. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia so they are very closely related. (Fraller, 2013) Knowing the slight differences between the two diseases could, in some cases, mean a cure. Both Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are caused by a dysfunction in the brain. In Alzheimer’s disease, there is a loss of brain cells brought on by age. Studies have shown that 10% of all people over the age of 65 and 50% of people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer’s. Out of all those people, only 1% of them inherited the disease. Someone who has experienced multiple head injuries or high insulin levels are also at a greater risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s. On the other hand, dementia is caused by changes to the brain. These changes may be caused by a stroke, brain tumors, or even head injuries. Diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, hyperthyroidism, B12 deficiency, and fluid build-up on the brain have also been known to cause dementia. (Healthwise Incorporated, 2011) Once the causes of the two diseases have been determined, it is important to discuss the symptoms. The similarities between the symptoms of Alzheimer’s......

We’ll be exploring the world of statistics from a business perspective this week, allowing you to practice your skills with descriptive statistics, formatting, graphs, and regression analysis. As discussed in the lesson, the value of statistics lies in the ability to analyze data more effectively for the purpose of improving decision making. You might have heard the expression that “statistics never lie, and only liars use statistics”. There is an obvious truth in this statement, in that, depending on the questions being asked and the data collected, the statistics can skew reality. For example, it is true that as ice cream sales increase, accidents at swimming pools increase. Does this mean that the more ice cream that is sold, the more accidents it causes (correlation/causation)? Of course not, but the data, if not interpreted correctly, could lead to false conclusions. It just so happens that both are correlated to a rise in temperature in the summertime. The hotter it is outside, the more kids flock to swimming pools, leading to more accidents, and the more ice cream is sold. So you see, although statistics are vital in the world of decision making, you have to be wise, and ask the right......
