Butler Systems Case Study
Students were asked to read and provide a brief summary for the Butler Systems Case Study in the class textbook. Assuming the role of the Vice President of Operations, an evaluation of the battery shortage problem will be provided, a proposal of potential actions that should be taken to mitigate the situation will be clarified with recommendations. A summary of the organization’s role in qualifying and selecting potential suppliers will be given with reasons for the recommendations (Benton, 2014).
Summary Butler Systems Case Study
The Butler Systems case study in the text describes the contractual relationship between the Butler Systems and SDX. Butler System’s VP of Operations discovered that instead of maintaining inventory to accommodate a 90-days operation, the company has been operating with only a 20-day inventory for operations; demand has increased for the HD-5 battery by competing international companies. This situation is a deal-breaker for the two companies, who are voiding the contract because the original agreement has been broken along with delivery time and pricing discrepancies (Butler, 2014).
Potential Actions and Solutions
Butler Systems has done a great job maintaining good relationships with the company’s suppliers. According to Benton (2014), maintaining supplier relationship is critical to the success of the organization. There are many factors involved with preserving good relationships with suppliers is maintaining product quality, timely delivery, flexibility, and customer service. Butler has been able to provide these factors. When more than one supplier is involved, formal bidding and negotiation processes take place where promises are made. When a contract is signed, the supplier has a duty to fulfill…...

...GLOBAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT BUS 439 Lori Wieters 08/01/2011 The development of globally competent leaders has been widely recognized as a critical factor in the future success of multinational companies. It is no surprise that global leadership development is one of the key human resource issues of chief executives in multinational firms a shortage of global leaders is becoming an increasing problem for multinational companies, slowing down and sometimes hindering the implementation of global strategies and leading to lower bottom-line results. Organizations are struggling today to identify both current and future global leaders, they are also failing to help these global leaders to acquire the skills and best practices necessary to succeed in the face of greater globalization. Most global leadership development programs fail primarily due to the lack of a coordinated internal process to create, flexible, and visionary leaders who can hold multiple perspectives in different environments. Some of the issues associated with global leadership development occurs where “a lot of career politics are associated with getting visibility early in the eyes of top management so that one will be given the challenging jobs that count. How- ever, there are real dilemmas associated with the age when potential should be identified—early or late?” (Evans, P., Pucik, V., Bjorkman, I., p. 336). The challenge is the amount of time, effort and investment it takes to develop......

Bus 475 Week 3 Dq

...BUS 475/DQ Week 3 Question 1 What are the different strategies and what is different about them? The main strategies commonly referred to as Generic and Grand. Generic strategies are used by companies to gain ground in a competitive market. This type has subcategories, which are cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. Firms that elect to use generic strategies, may offer cheaper prices for the same service as their competitors. For instance, when purchases a plane ticket, they can go with Southwest Airlines, which is a no frills company and get a lower price. Southwest opts to omit the bells and whistles (unlike Virgin Air) to offer low prices and gain a competitive edge within the airline industry. Generic strategies can be used in all industries and on any product type. Whereas Grand strategies are elaborate and over the top and change the course of business, because their focus is long term. This type has subgroups, which are market growth, product development, turnaround, liquidation. Firms that focus on market growth, want a low risk strategy and will growing market interest on a product already being marketed. The opposite of market growth is product development, where firms focus on research and development. Pharmaceutical companies are heavily into research and development. Turnaround strategy is just what it is, firms whose product is performing poorly, will switch how they present their product to generate interest. Liquidation is a desperate......

I also have had many of my own performance reports written and administered by my own supervisors. I am very familiar with the Air Force’s current performance rating systems and I understand where it plans to go. In the Air Force, every individual knows the exact date their performance report will be due and close out because they are all set up on an annual basis. At any time an Airman is free to go to their supervisor and ask for a feedback to know the status of their current performance. A good supervisor should give verbal feedback to their Airmen every day on how they are doing and also conduct a written mid-term feedback session about 6 months before their performance report closes out. Setting up a specific time and date for performance feedback helps prevent the first issue addressed in the article, “Too Vague” (Jackson, 2012). 2- Benefit offerings and salary offerings play a huge role in marketplace competitiveness. Much of the work force has family members to support so benefits like health insurance or child care may not just be lucrative but essential. Gallatin Carpet Cleaning is a small, family-owned business operating out of Bozeman, Montana. For its services, the company has always charged a flat fee per hundred square feet of carpet cleaned. The current fee is $28 per hundred square feet. However, there is some question about whether the company is actually making any money on jobs for some customers-particularly those located on remote ranches that require considerable travel time. The owner’s daughter, home for the summer from college, has suggested investigating this question using activity-based costing. After some discussion, a simple system consisting of four activity cost pools seemed to be adequate. The activity cost pools and their activity measures appear below: Activity Cost Pool | Activity Measure | Activity for the Year | Cleaning carpets | Square feet cleaned (00s) | 20,000 hundred | | | square feet | Travel to jobs | Miles driven | 60,000 miles | Job support | Number of jobs | 2,000 jobs | Other (costs of idle capacity and organization-sustaining costs) | None | Not applicable | The total cost of operating the company for the year is $430,000, which includes the following costs: Wages | $  150,000 | Cleaning supplies | 40,000 | Cleaning equipment......

Bus 415 Week 4 Scenario 3

...BUS/415 Robert Hedicke Week 4 Scenario 3 Brian McDonald spent his time away from work on his hobby, model trains. His train set was large and consisted of rare and one-of-a-kind trains. One day, while visiting with fellow train hobbyist Harry, Brian said, “When I retire in 2 years from Food mart, I’m going to sell my trains and spend the rest of my life traveling on real trains.” Brian told Harry that he was the only person he planned to offer his trains to, because he knew Harry would take care of them. Harry said he looked forward to the day when he could buy the trains. Harry spent the next 2 years and most of his savings building a new 2,000-square foot room onto his house to make room for the trains. When Harry told Brian he was building the new room, Brian just smiled. Brian also heard that Harry borrowed money from his aunt to buy the trains. When Brian retired, he sold his trains to his neighbor, James. Harry sued Brian, claiming breach of contract, or in the alternative, for promissory estoppels. Who wins? Explain your answer. * * * In this case it seems as if Harry has the right to sue Brian. In my opinion what they had was an oral contract in which the contract was breeched at the time Brian decided not to sell the trains to Harry but to sell them to his neighbor James. This would be the intentions of Harry’s retirement to retire in two years from the Food Mart and spend the rest of his life traveling on real trains, the trains he would......
