Memo Review In today’s corporate world, forms of communication range from extremely casual conversations and instant messages to complex presentations and detailed letters. The primary determining factor for which form of communication to use is the audience to which the information will be received as well as the relationship between audience and author. In this paper we will review a University of Phoenix provided accounting memo written from an accountant to the company’s CEO, analyze what information should be included in the memo versus what should be removed; consider if the use of accounting specific jargon is appropriate based on the audience; the CEO; and finally explore what possible repercussion can happen if the memo is not suitable for the targeted audience. In the initial review of the memo, the first error that immediately jumps out is the heading and salutation lines. Both use the acronym “CEO” instead of using the person’s first and last name; which is the more professionally acceptable approach. The CEO may interpret this as either a lack of attention to detail or that the information is generic and not specific to level of authority. Next, the entire memo reads extremely choppy and does not give the reader much lead-in information about why the author has sent the memo to begin with. Since the communication is going directly to the CEO, the introductory paragraph should be clear, concise, and to the point. The remaining communication needs to address what problems are relevant and discuss why it is necessary to consult with the CEO for a solution. There are two additional big red flags with the Alex Accountants memo. The first is the lack of proof reading and the second is the use of accounting specific acronyms. A CEO will not necessarily know accounting jargon,…...

...Option 2: Memo Evaluation By Lynda Jenkins ENG221 Option 2: Memo Evaluation The memo I will be evaluating is one from my place of work. The company is called Gamwell Technologies Inc. It was in regards to a program call Auto task that we were going to start using online and our boss just explains how to use it and our logins. The tone of this memo is very direct and straight forward. He always gets straight to the point in any subject, because if he doesn’t the guys will be asking a lot of questions. I think the writing style would be technical because he is explaining how to get to the site, what we use to log in and if a link on how to use the site. We cannot do anything else besides what is written or we would not be in the right site. So I think it is technical writing because in the memo he includes the user guide and the process on how to get to and onto the site. And of course at the end lets us know there is going to be a company meeting on this and wants us to write down any questions we might have after going onto the site. I thought it was straight forward and to the point I would not change anything about this memo. Even though I know that maybe he could have gone into more detail with the site and explained what its purpose was for the company instead of us logging on and finding out ourselves. Basically we were going to switch our ticketing system to this site, but we never did in the end. We all had the meeting and it was going...

...Business Writing Portfolio Natasha Allan XCOM/285 Essentials of Managerial Communication University of Phoenix Reflection Reflecting back on the Essentials of Managerial Communication and the last nine weeks, there have been several key points that will benefit writing skills in the workplace. The most important lesson learned is how to tailor a message for the audience which will receive it. A manager must know how to approach an audience be it an employee, a member of management or a customer. Each audience may need to be informed of the same information, but the way a manager presents the information to each should be different. A manager should also be aware of ethics and personal privacy when writing. It is easy for a manager to inadvertently create a problem for the company by doing something considered unethical by some or by invading an employee’s privacy. This course helped to understand how a manager should consider ethics and privacy when writing. This course also covered the considerations a manager must give an audience when deciding how much the audience knows about the subject matter. A manager does not need to assume the audience knows more information than it does, but he must also not bore an audience with subject matter the audience already knows. Lastly, a manager must keep in mind formality of documentation. A memo should be a more formal document than an e-mail. An e-mail to a fellow employee can be more informal than an e-mail to......

...Communications Memo Legal Obligations Amid the turmoil of a sudden resignation and rumors of inappropriate accounting practices, we cannot forget our legal obligations. The Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC) is investigating our situation and requesting documentation. The specifics of these requests lead us to believe that the questionable practices may involve revenue recognition. The SEC requires that we file the following information because we are a publicly held company (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commision, 2012) . • Our directors, officers, and particular shareholders o Salaries o Benefits o Any transactions between the company and the people listed above • Our operations • Financial condition of the business o Independently audited financial statements • Our position o Terms of contracts or lease agreements Value of Public Communication Public opinion is extremely important. The public needs to see active participation by the entire company in repairing this situation. We should strive for professionalism, humility, and honesty. The quick resignation of the CFO combined with this SEC investigation will cause the public and our stockholders to doubt our company’s honesty. The goodwill we have worked so hard to gain will be gone if we do not act fast. In an attempt to regain public trust, we need to be as transparent as possible. Transparency will require that we inform the public of our actions. To accomplish this we should consider adopting a...

...planned and has the verbal and physical capabilities necessary (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). If the parents of those children had known some of the side effects would cause death, it is doubtful that anyone would have signed their children up for the trial, which is why it is possible the consent never existed. The injured parties involved are the children who have died or have suffered from permanent damage. Pfizer is also an injured party because there is a reputation at stake. As a well-known pharmaceutical company it’s not good to have preceding lawsuits that have caused deaths. The company could lose money for paying out the lawsuit, but also investors, clients, and customers who have bought the brand will be discouraged to do future business. This unethical behavior affects the lives of the Nigerian women who have lost their children as well the children who are left with permanent damage. These women will never see their kids again because of personal gain. This type of unethical behavior makes it harder for legitimate trial experiments to take place. Society will see trial studies as a death wish, and not as a possible cure to a diagnosis. Patients will not be as willing to volunteer....

Demonstrative Communication Week 2

...Demonstrative Communication Paper Korey Free BCOM/275 March 3, 2014 Sandra Otero Demonstrative Communication Paper Demonstrative communication is defined as any communication that is non-verbal and non-written. This can apply to hand gestures, facial expressions, tones of voice, body posture and position, eye contact, and anything else that doesn't involve the spoken or written word. Demonstrative communication can be used by itself, but more often it accompanies verbal communication, and serves to enhance it, or sometime to detract from it. Used by itself demonstrative communication can send powerful messages, even when the sender doesn't say anything. A stern look from a parent or a boss can get instant results from kids or workers that aren't doing what they are supposed to be doing. Sometimes demonstrative communication shows the listener that the speaker is saying one thing when they mean something else! For instance, if we try something someone has cooked, and we don’t like it, but we tell them that we do because we do not want to hurt their feelings, a facial expression can give us away! When we know someone well, we can tell right away if they are sad or upset, just by the look on their face, and by their posture. Even though they haven't said anything, we might approach them to ask "what’s wrong?” When someone is speaking, they can use hand gestures to direct the listener’s attention to where we want it. Many people use hand gestures to add emphasis to......

...To: Mike Smith, Supervisor From: r, Intern Date: January 29, 2014 Subject: Memo for Potential Response to Correspondent’s Letters Due to your request for potential responses to the many letters regarding questions/concerns about wooden vs. metal bats, I have gathered information that will allow us to provide several different responses that will satisfy the questions that the writers have for us. With all of the letters being sorted into 5 different categories, I was able to write an adequate response for each of those 5 categories to send out in a bulk method. Why has the NCAA not banned the use of metal bats? : * First and foremost make sure to apologize for their unfortunate experience and assure them that changes have been made to protect the safety of the players involved. * Explain in detail the efforts made by the BBCOR to ensure the approval of only certain bats that meet its requirements. * Ensure the writer that each and every bat that is available for use in the league that it will be stamped with a NCAA certification mark. * Outside research and lack of change/action taken by the NCAA to change regulations: * Start out by acknowledging their effort to write a letter to us and tell them that we are always looking for ways to better the safety efforts and standards for the players. * The writer’s information may be outdated, because the BBCOR......

Our team would benefit greatly from most of them, but their value varies greatly by cost, usability, and resource usage. I have selected three different programs for your review. Software Selection Firstly, all of our onsite users are currently using the Microsoft Windows operating system. Some users located offsite use Macintosh OS X. This would have presented a problem in the past, but luckily almost every choice today allows for use in both cases. Software Number 1: Cisco WebEx This software is excellent. It allows for almost any application that could be desired in a business setting. The price is $19.99 a month for the annual plan, it allows for HD video conferencing, desktop sharing, mobile phone access, remote control, VOIP, and can be initiated by a single host computer. Software Number 2: Adobe Connect This software also allows for basically anything we could expand to use. It’s price is $45.00 a month per host. ...Research on the Chilean Mine Collapse of 2010 This paper researches four news articles that reported on the Chilean mine collapse that occurred on 5 August, 2010. The focus will be on the communications of the collapse regarding audience. The paper will discuss the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident and the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a message about this incident. Finally the question “What actions must you take before and after the message is delivered to ensure that it was received as intended?” will be answered. There are various similarities within all four articles. First, no one knows exactly if the men trapped below were able to make to an emergency shelter in the mine where there was three to four days of emergency rations stored. All reports do concur to the fact that drilling back down to rescue the miners will be difficult and will take some time. However, once news of the collapse spread through the local community and finally to the world, the families of those men trapped were angry and frustrated with the lack of news. The families’ of the miners require some type of feedback on their current status and that everything possible is being done to assist them. The biggest drawback is being trapped that far below, the mining company and rescue teams did not have answers for those families. Turning to the employees, whether they are working in another mine or part of the...

The franchise can also brand their products by using a famous athletes name and putting the name on merchandise for global marketing. ...Revising has to do with “looking over” what you have already drafted. It somewhat goes hand-in-hand with proofreading, but in this stage you are searching out parts you may not like as much or parts that wouldn’t fit in with the message you want to convey. Rather than quickly looking over it as you would a text message, revision in the business world involves time and much attention. Not doing so can possibly cause frustration, confusion, and even delays due to the perception of your audience. More importantly, what your message comes out to be could reflect your character, and your way of thinking. It is easier to revise as you write, making it easier to revise later in your writing. You would also want to understand the purpose of your writing and sum up your audience by determining their needs. You’d also want to determine if you would be taking a direct or indirect approach, but you do not want to sound passive. Producing is the more creative part of the writing process. Depending on the medium you choose, a number of things can be done in order to produce or enliven your message. Whether you are formatting or wanting to add visual effects, these tasks would be considered part of the producing step. This involves graphs/tables, captions, fonts, margins, proper spacing, etc. Similar to revising, the main purpose of proofreading is to check for errors such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, missing sources, missing visuals, etc. It’s also good to make sure you’re......

No one else would have the responsibility of the business other than myself, this is something that I want to do in the near future and that is what I am going to school for business for. Partnership: If a person or group of people wanted to go in on a business with me than we would be partners in the business. We would pool together and establish a company together and it would be ran as a group or team. This is also something that my friend and I have looked into as our town needs more businesses and we would like to have something that we can run and make money and be our own boss. Limited Liability: Limited Liability: Having signing the papers if something were to happen to the business that I have opened and it was not making any money than they could not come after me for money in the end. People sign these papers to make sure that they have themselves covered just in case something does happen and the business is not making a profit. Joint stock company: I open by business that I have been wanting to in a long time but want to get a start I would ask people to invest in my company with a percentage of the profits that were being made. This is something that I would not do as it is a huge risk not knowing how well the company will end up and you may end up owing more in the end....

...Memorandum Date: March 5, 2012 To: Management From: Subject: Web Conferencing Programs The purpose of this memo is to inform you of the about the different web conferencing programs available to our company. Web conferencing is a great tool we can use to have those weekly status meetings. We will be able to bring our offsite teams on board and connect with them at any time. These programs will potentially save time and money while bringing the department together. I have researched 5 of the best companies and found that though they are similar in services you can see some differences if you if you look for key points. The five programs I choose were Cisco WebEx, Fuze Meeting, GoToMeeting, Infinite Conferencing and InterCall. As shown below (table 1) most common features are shared by all but Fuze Meeting did not have the capacity to use VOI P or have video or webcam features and CISCO WebEx was not capable of recording the meetings. While GoToMeeting and Infinite Conferencing have all the features the max number of attendees either exceeded or did not meet our business needs. This is the reason I choose InterCall. This program has a total of 124 number of max attendees. We can definitely expand with this program and secure a smart web conferencing tool for future use.
