“Calling Home” by Jean Brandt Assignment

This story takes place around Christmas time when Jean was a thirteen year old girl.
On this particular day, Jean was filled with happy, joyous emotions. She loved Christmas time and her grandmother was in town visiting for the holidays. Jean, her grandmother, her brother Louis, and her sister Susan were out at the mall for some last minute Christmas shopping. They sang carols, chattered, and laughed the whole way there. They were really in the holiday spirit.
While at the mall, Jean came across a popular Snoopy button for 75-cents but knew she was supposed to be shopping for presents for other people so she couldn't decide whether or not she would still get the button. She asked her sister and her sister gave her the OK. Once Jean got a glance of the cashier lines, she began to rethink whether or not she wanted to wait in such a long line for something that only cost 75-cents. She ended up deciding she did not want to wait so she walked back to the basket where she got the pin from and instead of dropping it back in the basket, she slipped the button in her pocket. The first few moments she was very hesitant because her conscience had set in and she had never stolen before.
She began to head towards the entrance and her heart began to race uncontrollably. The faster her heart raced, the faster she walked which shows how fearful she was. However, once she made it out the store, she felt relieved and actually referred to get away as an accomplishment.
Then the plot thickens. As she receives an unexpected tap on her shoulder from a security guard who asks her to empty her pockets, she becomes panic-stricken and confused. The emotional state of confusion was solely based on the fact that she was sure no one had saw her steal the pin. Given the fact that it was only a 75-cent item, she thought of just giving…...

Texting vs Calling

...Texting vs. Calling Years ago making a phone call on the cellular phone was huge advancement for communication, now today texting has become the main form of communicating. In 1973 Martin Cooper created the first portable phone 800 MHz prototypes that could be used outside the home and the car, before the only portable phones were in cars. It weighed about 2.5 lb. and the battery life lasted for about 20 minutes. According to Motorola.com, Cooper is considered the inventor of the first handheld cellular phone and the first person to make a phone call in public on a handheld cell phone. In 1977 cell phones went public. Chicago was the first city to trial cell phones with 2000 customers. Over the years as cellphones became smaller, lighter, and a longer battery life- they have also added new features to expand the way we communicate with others. The new cellphones today, a person can do more than just make phone calls- they can also text, IM (instant message), send emails, and Skype. The two most common forms of communicated though are making a phone call and texting. So texting or calling, which one is more helpful and convenient? Texting or SMS (short message service) is when a person types a short message on the cellular device to another person. Sending a text message is convenient because it is a faster way to get in touch with someone. I know a lot of people who do not even their phones, but would respond to a text immediately. Of Passion and Calling

...investment of effort to pass each subject, let alone study whilst juggling all the other responsibilities that one has in life.   Pursuing graduate school takes all these things but if looked upon closely, these things are inevitable. These are factors that would exist for anyone who would like to pursue higher education. So why am I seeking admission to graduate school? Just two things: my passion and a calling. Passion – it is the inert force in any human being that drives them to pursue their dreams and goals. Passion is a very strong feeling towards something, which, in my case, would be children. From high school to college years, I have seen myself to be very passionate about children. Children of the youngest ages, may they be a fast learner or slow learner; may they obedient or stubborn. I have found myself volunteering to take care of other people’s children or playing with them while others scour at this task. This passion that I have for children is my main reason on why I am applying for a major in Teaching for Early Grades.   The second one, a calling, is actually a realization that I have recently found. From college to now, my best skill at work would be to educate others, no matter what profile my audience is. With these two things in mind, I mustered up enough courage that I have to look for a degree in higher education. That is why I am writing about why I am pursuing admission for graduate study. Of course, nothing will ever beat my own Alma......

Everyday someone new is signing up for cell phone services. Whether it be AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or US cellular, we are dealt with the decision of what is more important; minutes or data plan. Minutes are the allowed time per month to receive incoming and outgoing calls. Whereas, data plan is the allowed text messages and pictures that can be sent. It seems as though text messaging is among the most popular ways of communication. It can be quick and easy, save time and battery life, and it keeps all conversations private from the public. Quit Calling and Annoying Me

...Quit calling and annoying me David Vickrey BIS/220 March 6, 2014 University of Phoenix Quit calling and annoying me Advances in Information Technology (IT) are meant to improve certain aspects within our lives. However, IT advances are resulting in a growing amount of ethical issues. Access to specific consumer demographic information basically became potential leads for telemarketing organizations. Once these leads were accessed, telemarketing businesses used call centers to push the products or services they sold. The ethical issues associated with IT advancements are ease of access to sensitive information, privacy, property and accuracy. Ethical issues due to advances in IT called for the creation of new acts to protect consumers. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) of 1991 and the Do Not Call Implementation Act of 2003 are two examples of Acts created as direct results of IT advancements coupled with ethical issues. The TCPA, enacted by Congress in 1991, restricts the making of telemarketing calls and the use of automatic telephone dialing systems and artificial or prerecorded voice messages. The rules apply to common carriers as well as to other marketers. In 1992, the Commission adopted rules to implement the TCPA, including the requirement that entities making telephone solicitations institute procedures for maintaining company-specific do-not-call lists. In 2003, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revised its TCPA rules to......

...My Calling Imagine a pro baseball game. The fans are cheering, the players are focused, and the kids are excited to be at a the game. Ushers walk the aisles selling peanuts and popcorn as the smell of food drifts through the seats. People all over the world play this magnificent sport. Baseball is the best sport of all time because you get to work on a team and you do not need to be a pro to play it. The sport of baseball has an informative history. Alexander Cartwright invented baseball in 1845. The only thing you have to do to play baseball is know the rules. The history of baseball is not only interesting to know but also helps people understand the game. Playing the game is one thing, But knowing it is another. Knowing the game is all I ever wanted to do. Now that i understand it I know I can do better than I already am. In this sport being a team player is essential. The cool part of baseball are the drills. It is fun because you all work together. Most people think its all about winning, but to me its all about having fun. This game would not work without players working together as a team. I am not the best player out there but if i can work hard enough I know I can at least be noticed and that’s all I want. Muhammad Ali said “I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'” Ever since that quote all I think about is Baseball. Calling Home

...After reading “Calling Home” written by Barbara Kingsolver, Steven L. Hopp, and Camille Kingsolver, I have gained a different perspective on America’s food culture and farming. I always felt that farming was just raising animals so that they could be sold off to processing plants so we can have our next piece of steak or chicken. In my opinion, when the authors of the book discuss “oily food” they mean the oil and gas that it takes to consume our food, whether it be the oil in our food or the oil and gas that it takes in order to produce of food. In the reading, the authors point out that not only does our refrigerator use the same amount of gas that we put in our car, but also in processing our food (i.e. tractors, irrigation, equipment). Not only does it take a lot of oil and gas in processing our food but also in generating our food (i.e. pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers). The authors continue on stating that if we grew our food in our back yard that we can tremendously reduce the amount of gas and oil to one-fifth of the total oil consumed. I agree with the arguments the authors make about our food culture. Living in American for the last 15 years, I don’t seem to see our country having much of a genuine American diet. It often consist a lot of different cultures food or fast food, which often includes a super-sized burgers and a side of fries. Although I have lived in America for the majority of my life, I do not take part of their food culture as......

Business Is a Calling

...For the “Business as a Calling” event, I got the opportunity to hear from a very successful and established business professional. Peter McGrath, a fellow University of Dayton graduate, shared his past encounters and experiences in relation to his business career. Mr. McGrath has been in business for over forty years, thirty seven of which were with JC Penney. At JC Penney, he worked his way up into becoming the Executive Vice President of product development and sourcing. In 2010, McGrath started his own business entitled “McGrath International LLC” where he served as a consultant. In addition, he talked about how, as an employee for JC Penney, he strived to influence his employees and customers in the same way as the founder, James Cash Penney did. During the speech, McGrath repeatedly referenced James Cash Penney as a strong influence in his life and part of the reason he has gotten so far in his career. Additionally, he talked about how they were always trying to improve their company and were never satisfied. Besides giving a very inspiring speech, McGrath also presented several pillars that left an impression on me. These pillars demonstrated the importance of obtaining a deeper sense of purpose and social awareness. The first was to “love what you do”. Although this may seem very simple, several people are unhappy in their careers. In addition, in general, people only look at the short term value of their jobs instead of focusing on the bigger picture. As Mr.......
