Indian Camp

...Indian Camp Going through childhood, and taking a step into the adult world, is something that we all go through. Growing up is a very important part of life. Someday we’ll all become adults, and if you don’t develop yourself personally, you will remain having a childish personality and not have the skills life requires of you to live a life as a normal human being. Personal development is a theme that is very prominent in the short story “Indian Camp” written by Ernest Hemingway in 1921, where we meet the young boy Nick who’s on a mission with his father at an Indian camp. He gets introduced to the realities of birth and death in only one day, and when the day is over, he has got numerous of experiences and has obviously grown mentally. He has taken a little step further into becoming an adult. Nick is a young boy accompanying his father and his uncle George to an Indian camp on the other side of a lake. Nicks father is a doctor, and the reason why they are visiting this Indian camp, is because the father is summoned by the Indians to help a young woman who’s been in labor for 2 days, still unable to deliver her baby. When the father arrives, she is lying in a bottom bunk; her husband, who cut his foot badly with an axe three days before, is lying in the bunk bed above her. The doctor performs a cesarean on the woman with his jackknife, delivers the baby, and sews up the woman’s incision. After the improvised surgery, Nick’s father looks into the top bunk and......

...interested in the White Noise DVD (featuring former Rainbow singer Doogie White) titled "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" (recorded in 2004 and released in 2005). It is the only release by the band White Noise. This was a DVD filmed on their support stint with progressive rock band Uriah Heep. The show consisted of mostly Rainbow songs from their 1995 album Stranger in Us All but featured arrangements of other songs including Mostly Autumn's 'Never the Rainbow'. In 2009, Joe Lynn Turner, Bobby Rondinelli, Greg Smith and Tony Carey created the touring tribute band Over The Rainbow with Jürgen Blackmore (Ritchie's son) as the guitarist. Over The Rainbow performed songs from every era of the band's history. After the first tour Tony Carey had to bow out for health reasons. There was a very big show planned for OTR, Sweden Rocks. Joe Lynn Turner reached out to Paul Morris, and it was accomplished with rave reviews. OTR then went on in their new line up with Paul Morris on keyboards, and did a USA, European, and Russian tours. Camp

...Many things in the world have not been named; and many things, even if they have been named, have never been described. One of these is the sensibility -- unmistakably modern, a variant of sophistication but hardly identical with it -- that goes by the cult name of "Camp." A sensibility (as distinct from an idea) is one of the hardest things to talk about; but there are special reasons why Camp, in particular, has never been discussed. It is not a natural mode of sensibility, if there be any such. Indeed the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration. And Camp is esoteric -- something of a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques. Apart from a lazy two-page sketch in Christopher Isherwood's novel The World in the Evening (1954), it has hardly broken into print. To talk about Camp is therefore to betray it. If the betrayal can be defended, it will be for the edification it provides, or the dignity of the conflict it resolves. For myself, I plead the goal of self-edification, and the goad of a sharp conflict in my own sensibility. I am strongly drawn to Camp, and almost as strongly offended by it. That is why I want to talk about it, and why I can. For no one who wholeheartedly shares in a given sensibility can analyze it; he can only, whatever his intention, exhibit it. To name a sensibility, to draw its contours and to recount its history, requires a deep sympathy modified by revulsion. Though I am speaking about......

The Physics of a Bow and Arrow

...The Physics of a Bow and Arrow A bow and arrow operates on certain principle of physics. I will be investigating what factors affect the accuracy of a bow and arrow. Figure 1 - The change in the shape of the bow as the archer draws it. Figure 1 - The change in the shape of the bow as the archer draws it. A bow is a basic machine called a “two-arm spring”. Energy is stored when the archer bends the bow. It may look like the string is being stretched, however, it is not stretched but the shape of the bow is changed. The stored energy is then transferred to the arrow in the form of kinetic energy. The greater the draw length, the greater the momentum and energy that the arrow gains. A longer draw length will influence your accuracy. You, as an individual, need to find the draw length that you are most comfortable with. With your own unique draw length you need to have an anchor point. This point is the place where your hand will be every time you shoot an arrow. This will greatly improve the accuracy of the shot. Figure 2 - Correct form to shoot an arrow Figure 2 - Correct form to shoot an arrow In archery your form is very important. If you do not have the correct form then you will not be able to shoot properly and you might hurt yourself. In Figure 2 (left) we can see the correct form when shooting an arrow. Old military snipers used a technique they called B.R.A.S. Breathe. If you are do not breathe then you will not be able to focus clearly on where you......

Wow Addiction

...The Way of WoW One of my sad addictions is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (mmorpg) named World of Warcraft (WoW). It has amassed over 12 million subscribers. It has addicted many people, killed a few, and yet married others. But how does one actually start playing this “crack cocaine” of the gaming world. I’ll take you thru the basic ins and outs of starting your addiction in this essay. Yes, this essay is the gateway drug to WoW, and I’ll be your dealer. First you’ll need the actual hardware and software. I won’t go too much into detail here. You’ll need a very comfortable mouse as you will be clicking and moving that little piece of pointer magic until your fingers lose all sense of feeling and they fall off. Then you’ll need to make sure your computer and video cards can handle this beasty! You can easily find the system requirements on the WoW website ( www.worldofwarcraft.com). The next portion is the actual software. There is currently the main game and two expansions, The Burning Crusade and The Lich King, with a much anticipated third installment called Cataclysm which is due out on December 7th of this year. Install all that as well as a few gigs of patches and you are ready to start your “noob” status. Noobs is a terminology used by many gamers to signify new players, or players who don’t know how to play well. The last part of setting yourself up for the technical part of the addiction is to set up a monthly subscription with the software......

Ribbons and Bows

...Ribbons and Bows INTRODUCTION Carmen Diaz, with a ten thousand dollar loan from two of her cousins, and one thousand dollars that she invested in equity, was able to open a specialty store called Ribbons an’ Bows, Inc, which was located in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida. Four months after opening the business, Carmen’s relatives requested a financial report, which was part of the original business arrangement. Within a short time, Carmen had expanded the business, purchased small equipment, paid wages to a part-time employee, and by all outward indicators, had been running a flourishing business. As Carmen gathered the necessary information to prepare financial statements, she started to scrutinize the transactions and was somewhat perplexed. Carmen realized that numbers were not adding up as she had anticipated. Additionally, it became questionable whether the business was operating successfully, at least when accounting principles were appropriately applied.  Statement of the Problem It was fortuitous for Carmen Diaz to have family who were supportive of her small business endeavor, thereby providing start-up funds and legal advice. Carmen’s endeavor can be recognized as a “microbusiness” operation; “microcredit”, microenterprise” and “microfinance” are terms that have been associated with microbusinesses (Datar, 2009). Clearly, Carmen would have benefitted from some professional entrepreneurial guidance that is widely available at no cost in the United States...

Indian Camp

...Indian Camp, 1924, Ernest Hemingway Growing up. Growing up is something that every human must go through. We all go through it differently and we all end up in a different way. For some it is easy and for some. Not so much. I guess the most of us has forgotten what it was like. What it was like to be a child. When we were 4-5 years old, our vision of the world was not that big. The world was big and scary. But at the same time we could not wait to experience the world. All the colors, I mean the world is a giant place. We wanted to see the whole world. And I think that it is sad that many of us forget that feeling. When we get older, we get more responsibilities. We do not have time for playing and messing around anymore. The world expects more from you the older you get. And meanwhile we forget all the things we wanted to do. We forget that the world is an amazing place. We forget that we want to see and experience it all. To make us an adult we have to go through a memorable experience. A rite of passage or so to say; an initiation. An initiation is a cultural/religious ritual. And that means that the ritual takes one person from one stage to another. Like a transformation from child to adult. In Indian Camp the main character Nick is brought to a child birth by his father. The father wants to show Nick life-experiences. Show him the “real” life and how life can change by your different choices. Dr. Adams, Nick’s father, is called out to help an Indian woman who......

Bow-Wow Theory

...The origin of language in the human species has been the topic of scholarly discussions for several centuries. One linguistic theory concerning the origin of language is the "Natural-sound source theory", that hypothesizes that primitive language are imitations of the natural sounds which early human heard from around them. This is also called the "Bow-wow theory". Yet, some argue that the theory does not necessarily offers a scientific explanation of the origin of language, and it still remains controversial. The "Bow-wow theory" states that language began when our ancients imitated the animal sounds. For example, if an animal passed by a human and made a certain sound, the human would try to imitate the sound that which the animal did. In fact, all modern languages have some words which seems to echo naturally occurring sounds. In English for instance, there are onomatopoetic words like meow, hiss, buzz, roar and oink, which phonetically imitates the source of the sound that it describes. Nevertheless, it is somehow difficult to see how most of the soundless and abstract objects in the world could have been given names if language simply echoed natural sounds. The theory fail to explain the presence of abstract words, such as love, kindness, evil and etc., which leads the theory to contradict itself. Another counter argument against this theory is that relatively few words in any language are onomatopoeic, and they are not the same across all language. For example, a......

...January 18, 2015 Case 1 Question: Explain two activities that leaders at Camp Bow Wow perform daily, and identify which of the managerial roles discussed in the chapter figure prominently for each. The two activities, which leaders at Camp Bow Wow perform daily, are such as taking care of dogs and answering phones. After thoroughly watching the video, reading chapter one and also from my understanding of the chapter, I can point out the managerial roles that are connected to the video and the book. Candace, who happens to be the general manager at Camp Bow Wow, performs the interpersonal functions, which consist of figurehead and liaison. Candace way of playing those roles is that she have to keep the customers happy at all time and also making sure that the dogs are happy, safe and well-taken care. According to our textbook Liaison role defined as “ the interpersonal role managers play when they deal with people outside their units” (Williams, 2014, pp. 11). On the other hand, Camp Bow Wow owner Sue utilizes the decisional roles of entrepreneur and resource allocator. The owner acts upon decisional roles by hiring management team to help support and manage her business. For example, promoting Candice to general management has helped Sue in a lot of ways with her business. The owner also performs disturbance handler role where she mentions that when customers are having hard time with the company, as managers, they tend to do what they can to fix the issue and make their......

Camp Bow Wow

...Camp Bow Wow Corporate Budgeting: Final Project My companies name is Camp Bow Wow, which is an overnight boarding facility for mainly dogs but other animals are welcome. The company was started in 2009 when the owner (Kasandra, myself) decided to become the owner of a dog named Buddy. All was well until Kasandra had a vacation planned and could not find any boarding facilities to meet the standards she was looking for. She had also recently inherited a large some of money in the amount of about 200,000 from the passing of her grandparents who also shared the love of animals with her. Kasandra used that money to find a place she could live and turn into a boarding facility and luckily she was able to find the perfect house with lots of land in the middle of town, so she got to work and the company shared its grand opening with the community in spring of 2011. The company has successfully been around for almost 3 years now offering products such as boarding, bathing, nail trims, and other products to ensure your animal is safe and happy. The location is right in the middle of the town of Appomattox so it’s perfect for people who are traveling in either direction and is known for their non-traditional animal boarding facilities, while targeting mainly dog breeds the facility is open to animals of several kinds. The reason we say its non-traditional is because the animals are not just kept in kennels all day and walked a few times unless requested by the owner, but......

...Solution 1: Camps provided an opportunity for the campers enrolled to establish lifelong friendships, new skills, appreciation to the outdoors, achieve independence and contribute towards the community, through the variety of programs and activities provided by the camps. Exposure to such activities provides valuable experience to the enrollers (campers), which can help shape, the enrollers in future. Parents are well aware of this and always look to provide such an experience to their children. For a camp business direct customers are the campers or enrollers who influence the parents and the indirect customers are the parents who actually pay for the campers. In making decision to enroll to the camp customers take into account the location and quality of equipment’s in the facility, at the` same time the programs offered are important as well. Parents and children during their social gatherings and meets often discuss plans for the summer, some of the conversations also lead to discussions of positive experiences previously enrolled campers or their parents had with a camp. Such social meets is one of the important factors in deciding to enroll to a camp along with the pressure from their children to enroll them in camps where their friends are going. A happy camper and his parent always will pass down the good reputation and positive experience they had with a camp. Many decisions of enrolling to a camp are highly dependent on word-of-mouth reputation of the camp.......

Indian Camp Analysis

...doctor takes his young son, Nick, and his brother, George, to the American Indian camp on the other side of a northern Michigan lake. There, the doctor performs impromptu, improvised cesarean with a fishing knife, catgut, and no anesthetic to deliver the baby. Afterward, he discovers that the woman's husband, who was in the bunk above hers, silently cut his throat during the painful ordeal. Analysis This story is a good example of the "initiation story," a short story that centers around a main character who comes into contact with an idea, experience, ritual, or knowledge that he did not previously know. Hemingway wrote a number of initiation stories, or as they are sometimes referred to, "rite of passage" stories, and the main character in most of these stories is Nick Adams, a young man much like Hemingway himself. In this story, Nick Adams is a very young boy in the Michigan north woods, accompanying his father, Dr. Adams, and his uncle George to an American Indian camp on the other side of a lake. Hemingway's own father was a doctor, who spent much time with his son in the northern woods of Michigan (most critics read this story as somewhat autobiographical). Here, a very young Nick is initiated into concepts that remained of highest importance to Hemingway throughout his writing career: life and death; suffering, pain, and endurance; and suicide. Nick's father goes to the American Indian camp to help a young American Indian woman who has been screaming because of......
