The Forgotten Group Member

In the case of The Forgotten Group Member the information is spotty but it is clear that Christine is dealing with situations in a very passive manor and she will get more out of her team if she understood the staged of group/team development which would assist her Leadership role. When the team was formed by the teacher and the group got together it would have been in Christine’s and the group’s best interest to assess the others and see the reaction. When Mike keeps making excuses of why he can’t make the meetings Christine could put it in his hands by asking him when he would like him to meet, making it more his responsibility (idea). By giving it to him then he is more likely to show up and participate. Understanding everyone’s strengths in the group you can gear what each person does to their own strength making it easier to get the end results you want or need. When the group is being formed in the beginning the group should come up with what the consequences will be and stick to it, maintain the groups integrity even if you have to report a student to the teacher for not participating, the group can easily pick up Mike’s role and will be more efficient. Christine needs to look more at the actions and personality of the group’s members and what stage they are in to help overcome the issues that Mike brings to the group. Maybe with the right direction Mike can be a better team player and not drag the group down.
In order for Christine to be effective she needs to understand the strengths and weaknesses of her teammates and what each team member brings to the group from the beginning. It’s also important to understand everyone’s communication process. Some members may need to communicate verbally or written, while others may need to use emails or a combination. You need to remember everyone looks at how this will benefit them as well as the team and if they don’t see the benefit then they will more than likely not put their all into it. If Christine isn’t going to understand her team mates she will never get the results she expects fully and could cause others in the group to start being more like Mike
Christine isn’t a very effective group leader because as the case reads she waited really until week 5 to analyze the group. It should have been more relevant to her from the beginning that a different approach in order to get Mike involved. Also it seems that in week 5 she sees that Diane isn’t outgoing but easy to direct. Each person seemed to show their personality from the beginning but it doesn’t seem that Christine really took advantage of their talents and actually directed. Mike may have been more respectful if she did, or maybe not but unless she puts her foot down and has a honest conversation with him she won’t really know what works with him. The following ten points form Organizational Behavior book for measuring the maturity of a team but I think that these are also good to look at in the beginning to see what you need to do in order to get there and maintain it. “Putting personal talents to work - Encouraging and motivating others - Accepting suggestions -Listening to different points of view -Communicating information and ideas -Persuading others to cooperate -Resolving and negotiating conflict -Building consensus -Fulfilling commitments -Avoiding disruptive acts and words. (Schermerhorn 156) When this doesn’t work sometimes you just need to know when to stop and take it to the instructor before taking down the whole group.
Christine could have a very mature and cohesive group if Mike was under control. She needs to go back to the basics and know how the group will work the best utilizing the talents of each team mate and knowing how the individuals communicate and work best. I say give everyone the power over their own parts and you get higher results.

I would say it would start with forming storming norming, and performing then adjourning. The forming concept begins as a group is brought together thru some formal selection and initially they talk and get to know one another. The Team lead by Christine Spencer for her Organizational development course is in the storming stage of development. We are told of how they were brought together and a short summary of their individual characteristics at the start of the team. The basic characteristics of the storming stage is vying for positions both formal and informal on the team, identifying communication plans and learning to solve problems together. This case proves that knowing how to lead a team is just as important as being a part of the team.   It is important to realize that not only does a leader have responsibility to a team but the members have to be involved in order for a project to be completed accurately and effectively.
