INTRODUCTION: The Mattress Company Simmons wanted a hot new bed to sell, so they went to the best design firm in the world IDEO to come up with the concept. The first meetings between the two teams were brilliant with creative energy on both sides. Then IDEO went off to work on the prototype. A couple months later they came back to Simmons and showed off the prototype in a big, classic IDEO pitch. The response from Simmons was not positive though they knew it was good, but Simmons had no ownership over it.
About Simmons and IDEO: Simmons Bedding Company was one of the oldest and major company in USA and had net sales for 2005 were $855 million but company wanted to explore new product opportunities in same field to tap more customers so they approached IDEO for the task. On the other hand IDEO is a design and innovation consulting firm and has been a successful example of what innovation and innovative design can accomplish. Also the culture of IDEO can be described as eccentric, fun, creative and innovative. The outside-the-box working style and shifting of working groups help to keep thinkers fresh and constantly on their toes.
Work Process of IDEO:
IDEO normally follow following process for typical engineering-intensive products or services:

Phase III: Detailed Engineering: Define the product details and built and tested prototypes.
Phase IV: Manufacturing Liaison: Prepared the product and supporting documentation for a seamless hand-off to volume manufacturing partners.

...CASE ANALYSIS #1: McDonald’s “Seniors” Restaurant In the study of the briefing of the McDonald’s Restaurant, there are positives to the problem and negatives towards the problem. A McDonald’s in a city crowded with seniors are overwhelmed with senior customers during the early hours of the day. The senior come in as a meeting area where they eat and commune at the restaurant. The number of seniors that come in, crowds the dining area in which customers come in and eat. They come in on the fourth Monday of every month to get extra special, over the age of 55 discounts. This is a meal that cost 1.99 and free coffee refills. The staff knows the seniors very well and go to see them if they are hospitalized. The relationship is considered a good one between the staff and the seniors. In addition, a idea of adding bingo to add to the excitement of the mornings for the seniors from nine to eleven a.m. Using the party room would accommodate up to 150 senior patrons. A primary problem to this case study is the senior crowd. The restaurant already takes on the task of having enough room to seat the entire dining style crowd, if it engages in bingo than the crowd will become even more outrageous. Not only will the restaurant have the meeting crowd they will have a bingo crowd as well. Meaning, that more senior crowd will come in ready and only ready to engage in bingo. A secondary problem would be the title of the restaurant would be at risk. The fast food......

They believed that prototyping is the key for the design process. They start with collaboration and brainstorming sessions in order to generate the most effective ideas and thoughts. They also have the customer involved with them in all the processes to keep him updated and aware of the steps that are taken. They have a 5 phase methodology to follow when starting a new project which are: Phase 0: Understand and observe, Phase 1: Visualize and realize, Phase 2:Evaluate and refine, Phase 3:Detailed Engineering and Phase 4: Manufacture. IDEO is a company that emphasizes design as well as engineering and is now met with an offer from a new company called Handspring to develop the next handheld computer which would directly compete with the Palm V. Handspring is a company created by two of 3Coms successful employees, and whose objective is to duplicate the success of the Palm V by selling a fully compatible but less expensive handheld device, which can also add more functionalities. This later came to be called the ‘Visor’. The problem however, is that IDEO is given half of the time already taken to develop the Palm V. Ideo Case #4-Marketing Management

...IDEO Case- Ch. 4; Marketing Management, Kotler; pg 119 1. Why has IDEO been so successful? What is the most difficult challenge it faces in conducting its research and designing its products? IDEO has been successful due to a “design thinking” approach centered around “human-centered methodology.” In addition, they design products that consumers actively want because they solve a consumer’s problem and as a result offer a superior experience. The most difficult challenge for IDEO is to design products from the outside in, in order to put customers first, as opposed to most tech companies that design from the inside out. They do deep dives into consumer behavior to determine how they purchase, interact with, use, and even dispose of products. They employ methods such as shadowing consumers, taking pictures or videos of them during product purchase or use occasions, conducting in-depth interviews with them to further evaluate their experiences. They also use “behavioral mapping,” which creates a photo log of people within a certain area like an airline departure lounge, a hospital waiting room, or a mall food court over a span of several days to gauge how the experience can be improved. IDEO also utilizes“camera journals” that participants keep, in which they record their visual impressions of a given product or category. They also invite consumers to use “storytelling” techniques to share personal narratives, videos, skits, or even animations about their experiences with...

Case Analysis

...SWOT Analysis | What is SWOT Analysis? | Examples of SWOT Analysis SWOT analysis was originally conceived and developed in the 1960s and its basic organising principles have remained largely unchanged in the field of strategic management since that time (Kotler et al., 2013). It is, as Ghazinoory, Abdi and Azadegan-Mehr (2011) comment, a systematic framework which helps managers to develop their business strategies by appraising the internal and external determinants of their organisation’s performance. Internal environmental factors include leadership talent, human resource capabilities, the company’s culture as well as the effectiveness of its policies and procedures. In contrast, external factors include competition, government legislation, changing trends, and social expectations (Johnson, Scholes and Whittington, 2008). The SWOT analysis framework involves analysing the strengths (S) and weaknesses (W) of the business’s internal factors, and the opportunities (O) and threats (T) of its external factors of performance (Ghazinoory, Abdi and Azadegan-Mehr, 2011). Through this analysis, the weaknesses and strengths within a company can correspond to the opportunities and threats in the business environment so that effective strategies can be developed (Helms and Nixon, 2010). It follows from this, therefore, that an organisation can derive an effective strategy by taking advantage of its opportunities by using its strengths and neutralise its threats by minimising the......

Ideation: Concept generation, brainstorming, prototyping. Refinement towards single design on the basis of feasibility and economic analysis 3. Implementation: Final design testing with user, clients and do the necessary changes as per the user requirement. This model was quite successful with in IDEO, but one of regular client of IDEO Con Agra Foods felt that they need to work with IDEO on different model i.e. longer periods of engagement with fixed teams from IDEO who exclusively work on projects from Con Agra Foods. IDEO and Con Agra Foods agreed to the longer term concept of team and one dedicated team of IDEO designers have been deployed......

...deoIDEO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT 1. Yes. IDEO should accept the Visor project, but they could persuade Handspring’s management to change its launch timings to produce a better result. 2. IDEO is a firm that specializes in product design and innovations; it also provides services in packaging design, product research, executive training and education on innovation, and strategic consulting services .It is set up as a collection of studios (14 as of circa 2004) of about 10-20 people each. Each studio is operated on a profit and loss basis, and studio heads are not hired from the outside but come from within. The real innovative work at IDEO is done through project teams. It has something similar to a matrix-like structure. Projects operate across studios, drawing people from different studios. Project teams can have as few as three or four, or as many as a dozen members. Once projects are finished, the teams disband and employees move to other projects and hence the employees have a good circulation of jobs. IDEO’s signature process: learning about customer needs and experiences as the basis for innovative and rapid product design. Three values seem to infuse the learning and evaluation process throughout: user desirability, business viability, and technical and manufacturing feasibility. They involves rapid prototyping of ideas. The 5 different process involved are Phase 0 (Understand/observe), Phase 1(Visualise/realize), Phase 2 (Evaluating /Refining), Phase 3......
