Clan culture is a family-like type of corporate environment that highlight solidarity or unity and commonality of goals and values (Tubbs and Moss, 1995). Successful leaders are viewed as mentors, coordinators or developers and team-builders. In this clan the theory of effectiveness is human development and participation. Organizations that use clan culture typically are also often selfless driven. For them, the most important principle of collaboration is that it can make the world a better place. Collaboration allows workers to feel more connected to their jobs and co-workers, makes jobs to be easier reducing stress at the workplace and also makes them happier (Chan, A. 2012).
ChildLine SA is endorsing clan culture simply because their mission statement on the 2008 annual report says “ChildLine SA is committed to develop and implement education & awareness raising programmes facilitating prevention of violence acts against children” which shows that they are following the underlying theory of effectiveness. On the annual report it is also stated that ChildLine South Africa is committed to ongoing training and development of staff members, networking partners and volunteers, also provide support to eight provincial offices for development of services to children which mean that they are sticking to allowing employees to be connected and reduce the workplace stress. Enga is one of the provinces located in Papua, New Guinea. The population of the Enga community range from 6000 to 9000 people. For years the Enga culture has been diversed in their beliefs, values , gender and kinship relationships. This culture primary source of survival is through horticulture. They use the sweet potato as the most important crop. Sweet potatoes make up more than 60 percent of all production. The fields where the potatoes are grown are made up of mounds. These mounds can be up to 9 feet in diameter. Most of the soil is soft, which makes it easy for planting. After they have completed gathering their harvest, they rebuild the mounds. They pull the mounds apart and mulch with old potatoes and leaves. Enga also grow bananas and yam swiddens. Swidden cultivation occurs when the land is cleared and cultivated for a temporary timeframe. They also are pig raisers. Enga’s do very little hunting or foraging. In this culture the women performed most of the labor. They did most of the planting, weeding and harvesting activities. The men’s responsibilities were to clear and burn the land in the swidden cultivation process. The men were better able to perform these duties because of their physical strength. Among horticultural communities, the extended family, a family composed of at least three generations including grandparents, parents, and children, and possibly married siblings and their spouses and children is most common and adaptive.
