Week Four Assignment

How might you use the strategies for applying creativity to problems and issues in addressing this topic?
Looking back at the story used for the previous assignment, not all the information was needed to be objective. Since last week more information has became available. It has been determined that the soldier was not shot at the time he was online with his wife. So far it appears he died of natural causes. The media added the point that the wife saw a bullet hole in the closet behind her husband, but once they started the investigation, it was revealed there was no bullet hole in the closet. Thus far they are ruling the death as natural causes, but the investigation continues. Having this information with the original paper would have made it easier to write, but the information that was provided was all I had at the time. One strategy that could have used was producing of ideas or scenarios, which at the time weren’t available, so using the information provided was key at the time.

How might you use the strategies for promoting curiosity in addressing this topic? Why do you think these strategies might be effective? The whole story contained some sort of curiosity, but in the end; any story concerning a death of a soldier in a foreign country will always be interesting to the reader. The strategy used for this story is more playing on the concern of the average American with family across sea fighting in this war. Leaving the reader with more questions surrounding the death of the soldier is what I noticed when I initially wrote my summary, but now that more information has become available; it answers a lot of the unanswered questions. While the family of the fallen soldier had to witness his death, but to know he wasn’t killed by an enemy will lift a lot weight of their shoulder. The strategy surrounding the original story in my mind was to get the sympathy of the readers and in the end it did, because these are the type of stories that touch our hearts, so it was effective in getting us to listen to the story and feel emotional.

How might you use the various methods for producing ideas to eliminate the bias from the original article and still present a factual and persuasive case? The key to this story to eliminate bias is sticking to the facts. In the original story there wasn’t enough information to keep the story bias, because I’m sure every reader thought he was killed in the line of duty and that wasn’t true. The soldier was killed from natural causes based on information released since then. The main idea of sticking to facts will make this article factual and persuasive at the same time. While this is a sad and unfortunate story it is true. What made this story stick out was the fact that the soldier was online using Skype with his wife when all of this occurred. The wife’s part of this story is what makes this story so appealing and leaves the readers wanting to know more information. This story is real and any information that is provided so stick to the part that this wasn’t a soldier killed in the line of duty, but more of a victim of circumstance. How many times have we seen something like this happen? I’m sure that is why this story made the headlines.…...

Critical Thinking

...Critical thinking is something we all use every day. It helps us to make informed decisions on matters that will affect our everyday lives. The amount of information we collect and time we spend evaluating the information will determine how well the outcome of our decisions benefit us. Recently the Blackberry that I have had for several years gave out. I was upset because I liked the Blackberry I had, was familiar with it, and knew how to use it well. However, the Blackberry I had was so outdated they no longer made that model, so I would have to decide on a new cellular device. Now anyone that knows me knows I don’t like change much so making this decision was not going to be an easy one. I would have to research, evaluate and decide what cellular device would work well for me. Since the purchase of my Blackberry things had changed a lot in the cellular world. Androids had come a long way so now I had to decide if I even wanted to continue with the Blackberry or move on to something else. With all the different devices out there it was overwhelming to say the least. The first thing I decided to do was start asking around to friends finding out which cellular devices they had, how they liked them, what features worked best for them and why. After doing this I had narrowed it down to 4 or 5 devices I thought might work for me. So now what? I decided I should get online and start reading reviews and comparing cost. I checked several websites showing the pros and cons of......

Crt 205 Week One - What Is Critical Thinking?

...What Is Critical Thinking CRT/205 Kayla Wallace UOP/Axia What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is when you’re basically thinking about thinking. For instance we think all the time, from what we will wear for the day or what we are going to eat. Maybe it’s sometimes to make a judgment, or whether or not we like something. When you think critically; you are thinking about whether or not the criteria is of good sense and logical. For example; you’re asked to maybe design or evaluate something, to make a proposal or diagnose a situation, to explain or comment on something, or to do any number of things that involve coming to conclusions. (In text quote: Retrieved from Text Book, Chapter One: What is Critical Thinking? (Page 2)) This would be an instance where you would stop and think more critically rather than just making quick decisions and not giving it your best. When working on something along the lines of this example you want to be able to give explanations, so you would want to take notes and think about all the options you could use to help get to a conclusion when trying to solve a situation, as well as when making a proposal. “The ultimate objective in thinking critically is to come to conclusions that are correct and to make decisions that are wise. Because our decisions reflect our conclusions, we can simplify things by saying that the purpose of thinking critically is to come to correct conclusions; the...

Critical Thinking Week 3 Individual Rebuttle

...Week 3 Individual Assignment - Rebuttal Paper BCOM/275 – Critical Thinking Patty Haynes 07/24/13 Virginia Carter The Rolling Stone magazine has recently been met with a slew of angry outbursts and boycotting for placing the well-known, suspected Boston Bombing Terrorist, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover this month. The magazine is under scrutiny not just for placing his picture on the cover, but for how the picture portrays the suspect. Tsarnaev’s photo is a very glamorous, dreamy eyed, tousled hair, sexier version of himself in the photo. This glorified photo is exactly how The Rolling Stone portrays famous actors and rock stars that are meant to be admired. Harold Maass is the executive editor for an online forum called The Week. He currently posted an article saying that The Rolling Stone shouldn’t be chastised for their choice and it is simply a ploy to sell heaps and heaps of magazines. He states that maybe we shouldn’t be so angry at The Rolling Stone publication because the New York Times posted it on their cover first. Maass also backs up Janet Reitman of The Rolling Stone saying that the only thing that happened here was that he happened to be a huge news feature, and features make the covers of publications. He also agrees with other authors that claim this could help the American public snap out of their daydreams and see that terrorists don’t have to be dirty, rag wearing, foreign language speaking, Muslims. While all of these comments can be boiled...

Critical and Creative Thinking Week 1

...Individual Week 1 Review Questions GLG/220 10/02/2013 Critical and Creative Thinking Questions Chapter 1 3. How do you think the principle of uniformitarianism accounts for occasional catastrophic events such as meteorite impacts, huge volcanic eruptions, or great earthquakes? The principle of uniformitarianism states the processes occurring on Earth today are very similar in manner as those throughout much of geologic times. In other words “the present is the key to the past.”(Murck, B. W., Skinner, B. J., & Mackenzie, D. (2010)). When looking at past geological events and occurrences that happened in the past with additions of new testing and technology they can predict when and if volcanic eruptions may occur, meteorite impacts and their damages, and if plate shifts will occur resulting in earthquakes. Scientists rate the earthquakes on a scale based on how damaging they are. 5. In what ways do geologic processes affect your daily life? Daily activities including the water we drink or the tress we plant to help prevent and control soil erosion are a part of geologic processes. Earth materials and processes affect our lives through our dependence on Earth resources; through geologic hazards such as volcanic eruptions, floods and earthquakes; and through the physical properties of the natural environment (Murck, B. W., Skinner, B. J., & Mackenzie, D. (2010)). Understanding Earth’s materials is important because we depend on its resources for......

Critical Thinking

...Critical thinking is a process that I didn’t have very much knowledge about until this week’s learning activities. Reading about critical thinking, logic, and decision making, made me realize how much I use it in my everyday life. In our readings they state “critical thinking frees us from nonsense” (Being a Master Student, Ch7). This is true because when we think with a clear mind it enables us to make better decisions. As I continued to read about critical thinking I noticed that there are many different interpretations and definitions of the meaning of critical thinking. When I was reading the Electronic Reserve Readings, the definition of critical thinking that stood out the most to me was Haplem (as cited in Fowler, 2002) defines critical thinking “as thinking that is purposeful, reasoned, and goal-directed the kind of thinking involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating likelihoods and making decisions when the thinker is using skills that are thoughtful and effective for the particular context and type of thinking task” (Fowler, 2002). I thought this definition was a great way to define critical thinking. It is telling me that you should define the problem, ask yourself questions, and answer those questions logically. There are 6 steps that are to be followed or used during the critical thinking process. I read and then interpreted the steps in my own words, so I could understand them better. Step 1: Identifying the issue or topic. ......

The world is changing and we all have to be willing to change with it and how we utilize skills such as critical thinking will be key. I am working for a post secondary school and we are building a new program for them online. They are traditionally a ground school, however the organization was purchased and the plan to build the online side was a huge change. Working for them for 7 months now I have helped to take something that was nothing and in 4 months as a team we have over 1.5 million in growth. It has taken a lot of hard work and critical thinking on all of our parts to make this successful. It can be tough to build a new side of a business and how we think is important. One tool that is utilized in our organization is our given talent that needs to be built up day after day to be successful.
