CSR: Change the approach, look at the bigger picture
Mar 2, 2016 Mostly it is seen, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practice, however big or small companies, are molded into a business oriented activity that try to do branding, attract more business and catalyze business results (profits). But companies should understand doing so would only deviate them from the very basic and simple purpose of the CSR – to give back to the society by being sensitive and caring enough not just in words but in literal sense.
A company’s social activities should be in sync with its business values. And the business values should be of high ethical standards while delivering business. Once this is practiced, it would reflect in the quality of products you deliver, service you provide to your clients, dealings with your customers, and so on so forth.
Thus, CSR should not be seen as burden or mandatory rule by government, but the activities should develop a sense of belongingness towards the society. Try to involve and align employees, partner companies, clients or customers in the CSR programs. You will notice a change in the attitude and perceptions. A sense of loyalty and respect will be developed by the employees, clients and customers towards the company. Loyalty and respect are automatically derived through genuine CSR activities, for which no expensive branding or promotion efforts are required.
Remember people want to work with the organizations which they respect. So, what is achieved is no less than a sustainable business in the long run.
Align the CSR activities that set greater examples, encourage individuals, companies and community at large of doing good to the society and country as whole. So CSR should not be taken as a job but effort to make the world a better place while on job!

Foreign affiliates may be able to improve their social legitimacy and overcome LOF by demonstrating social commitment to host-country constituents through corporate social responsibility (CSR). If LOF is positively related to the distance between the home and host countries, and CSR activities confer social legitimacy benefits on foreign affiliates, we should expect CSR activities and distance to be positively related. However, we argue that, despite this potential motivation, foreign affiliates from more distant home countries are in fact less likely to engage in host-country CSR. Our argument focuses on the ways in which distance affects the MNE’s willingness and ability to engage in CSR abroad. We also predict that hostcountry CSR reputation negatively moderates this relationship. Using Community Reinvestment Act data for foreign bank affiliates from 32 countries in the United States over 1990–2007, we find strong support for our hypotheses.
