Although there is an endless list of possibilities, I chose Deion Sanders as the greatest American athlete of all time. Sanders began his college career at Florida State, playing on their football, baseball, and track teams. He became a two-time All American for football and helped the Seminoles reach the College World Series. In 1988 he won the Jim Thorpe Award for top defensive back. In 1989 he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons and began his profession football career. That same year he signed a contract with the New York Yankees.
In September of 1989 Sanders hit his first homerun for the Yankees along with his first ever punt return for a score as a profession football player making him the first ever athlete to hit a homerun and score a touchdown in the same week. What a way to start your professional career as an athlete. After five seasons with the Falcons in 1994 Sanders signed one year with the San Francisco 49ers. That year Sanders set the NFL record for the most ever yards returned after an interception, with 303, a record that still stands today. He also tied the record for interceptions returned for a touchdown, with three that season. That year he was deservedly voted the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and his team won Super Bowl XXIX against the San Diego Chargers.
After one season with the 49ers Sanders signed with the Dallas Cowboys during week 2 of the season, making him at the time the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, and in 1995 helped them defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XXX. In five seasons with the Cowboys, Sanders earned Pro Bowl berths in every single one. Sanders entered retirement at the end of the 2000 season. In 2004 however he signed a one year deal with the Baltimore Ravens and ended up tying the record for the second highest intercepted return touchdowns in a career with nine.…...

...Running head: THE LIFE AND THE ATHLETE, DION SANDERS 1 THE LIFE AND THE ATHLETE, DION SANDERS BRADLEY CUMMINGS WEEK 3 SEPT. 17, 2012 GEN 200 THE LIFE AND THE ATHLETE, DION SANDERS Abstract 2 Power, Money and Sex is what Dion Sanders book that what he published talks about, along with the trials and tribulations that he went through in his NFL career. Dion talks about how success almost ruined his life. In his touching, provocative, and heartwarming story, I got to meet the real Dion Sanders. Not the Hollywood image, not just an incredible athlete, but the man who discovered after arriving at the pinnacle of success that meaning and purpose lay in another direction. Ever since he went pro in 1989, Dion Sanders has been known as “PRIMETIME,” the hottest defensive back in the National Football League and base stealing sensation in Major League Baseball. He is the only athlete in history to play in both a World Series and a Super Bowl. By the age of twenty five, Dion was already at the top of his game, but he was desperate for something more. In his gripping story, Dion writes: “I tried everything. Parties, women, buying expensive jewelry and gadgets, and nothing helped. There was no peace. I was playing great, and every time I turned on the TV I could see myself on three or four commercials, but there was no peace, no joy, just emptiness inside”. Still pursuing his dreams, he cut a rap album in 1993. His song, “ MUST BE the MONEY!” hit the Top Ten charts all......

Alex Sander

...Issues Alex Sander’s behaviour can be summed up in the following points: • He doesn’t give much importance to performance review system as he thinks that the 360̊ performance review system was just a waste of time • He believed that his temper was the most effective management tool for him because he feels that his anger resulted in the increase of the output of the company employees • He lacked the quality of being an effective manager as he was incapable of getting work done from others. • His aggressive nature in the completion of the project and believes that being pushy and commanding is the only way to get the job done. • Lack of patience in Alex is also one of the major issues as he gets irritated of explaining things to his employees more than a couple of times • For him the success was only in terms of money as he only looked at the fact the how much more amount of return he has made on his investment Sam Glass (one of the product group supervisors) has certain issues: • He considers the 360̊ performance review as an important part and wants Alex to take all the survey seriously • Glass is also concerned about the working style of Alex because while working in a team he doesn’t work as a team rather he works as an individual and tries to complete all the work on his own • Besides all flaws that Alex has, Sam Glass still wants to have Alex in his office because of his hard work and his dedication toward the......

A Day in the Life of Alex Sander

...SITUATION Alex Sander is a young and promising product manager in the Toiletries Division of Landon Care Products Inc. Over the past year, he has successfully rebranded two of Landon’s skin care products in the United States. Alex has created a winning enviornment at the Toiletries Division by applying very high standards to everyone, and often pushing his staff to the limits. A recent 360 degree review has revealed that Alex’s strong drive to succeed has come at a cost, as his staff are highly disenchanted by his iron-fisted ways. (Alex has since discounted the importance of the these findings.) Sam Glass, Alex’s direct manager, is one of the three Product Group supervisors and is coordinating the 360 degree Performance/Feedback Review discussion with Alex. As part of the 360 process comments have been recorded from selected individuals higher and lower in the organizational hierarchy that the individual receiving the feedback. Sam is scheduled to have a discussion with Alex on his 360 process comments and has indicated a contradiction with the results and Alex’s self-assessment. ANALYSIS Alex Sander is described by his staff as a successful, but overly-critical, narcissistic, demanding and inconsiderate micro-manager. These attributes fit the Harvard Business Review Guide to Office Politics’ (Dillon 2013, p. 15) description of a “Control-Freak Boss”. With reference to the Guide, it must be understood that Alex is behaving in this manner not because he is evil.......

A Day in the Life of Alex Sander

...What does the 360 degree data tell us about Alex's likely career success? If you were Sam Glass, would you invest more time in helping Sander progress at Landon? The 360 degree data draws a “good vs. evil” portrait of Alex. He is a sort of incarnation of House, MD, a main character of a famous TV series: he is a high performer, but he has a lack of ability to work well with others. Narcissism, Machiavellianism and arrogance are three important negative traits of his personality emerge from the data and from the case. Alex’s Napoleonic temper negatively affects his work environment causing nervous and distressed co-workers without seeing anything wrong with this situation as long as the job gets done. Therefore his co-workers respect him, but they do not see him as a team leader. If I were Glass, I would invest more time in helping Alex progress in Landon. First, I would read and analyze his 360 performance review with him because there are plenty of comments on Alex that should open his eyes to his arrogance. Since he is a narcissist, it would be hard to get Alex admit his weakness, but he definitely needs a wakeup call to let him fully understand and take seriously this issue. If he wants to be a well rounded leader, he absolutely needs to understand how his attitude affects others emotions and work performance. For this reason I would implement a reward system that takes into account also his ability to evaluate co-workers contributions, not just economic or......

A Day in the Life of Alex Sander

...Alex Sander’s Organizational Behavior Review Alex Sander is the project manager at Landon Care Products, Inc. Alex is smart. Alex is self-driven. Alex is an asset to his company in that he makes intelligent decisions, faces challenges straight on, and confidently makes things happen while getting things done. In over just one year at Landon, Alex rebranded two national skin care products. Sam Glass, Alex’s supervisor, expected Alex to cause waves within the work place when he hired him, due to his aggressive personality. This is exactly what happened. What Sam failed to predict when he hired Alex a year ago, was the extent to which Alex would cause waves among co-workers. A recent 360( review conducted at Landon justifies Alex’s disregard for co-worker’s feelings. And while this performance review is the issue Glass wishes to address, Alex has recently voiced an interest in moving further up in the company to a higher, more influential position. Alex sees himself as a leader. The problem is that while his co-workers respect him, they do not see him as a team leader. In order to help Alex become a leader, Glass needs to help Alex address this critical issue. And because of Alex’s personality, this will not be easy. Alex’s personality needs to be briefly addressed to help clarify the reasons behind the problem he is having at work. Alex has the personality characteristic of Machiavellianism, which according to Robbins and Judge, this means that he is pragmatic...

Alex Sanders Review

...October 29, 2014 School of Business Administration MGT 620 By: Romina Krulig C 09984171 Cohort B Case Analysis: Alex Sanders Alex Sanders is the newest and youngest product manager in Landon care products headquartered in Connecticut. During his career in Landon Alex manage to launch two skin care products nationwide, and is currently working on his most important project to date. He has a “Type-A” personality, which means that is the type of manager who likes things done right and under the established time limits or lower than expected. Alex has strong contrasting qualities in his personality. On one hand the case shows Alex as a manager with a sense of orientation towards his goals, with great commitment to his place of work and a lot of dedication for each of his tasks within the company, so much so that the case then shows us the other side of Alex’s personality, where he is a very demanding and impatient person, up to the point where he becomes arrogant and aggressive. Also, his insensitiveness and indifference to employees’ emotions can be referred as an “attitude” given that he tends to neglect employees emotions. At the same time, Alex’s strong authoritative personality can be better describe with the employee engagement theory, falling into the category of active-constructive situation because of Alex’s involvement, satisfaction and enthusiasm about the work. The case revolves around a 360 degree performance review, although this is not...

Sanders Essay

...Sanders Essay 1. Sander’s essay describes not only describes the hardship it is being a male from a non-privileged background. Not only because of the gloom it brought and the very narrow career choices but the stigma a man in general has to fight his whole life because of men who come from privileged and powerful homes. I feel the writer is showing his maturation process through words as he grew up. The author had come from such a diverse background and had seen so many different working or social classes as he grew up that when it came to trying to understand a woman’s view on a male driven society it was hard for him comprehend there thought process that men steal life’s best offerings for themselves. Reading and getting visuals of what the author had gone through and been apart of definitely helped me understand his befuddlement. I mean, he had seen slaves, miners, and military veterans who sacrificed their bodies and sometimes their lives just so their wives and children could have food or lives more privileged lives than they had growing up. But as he progressed through life and his education he began to see how the other half lived and the entitlement they felt. The writer didn’t come from that half so how could he change the minds of woman who come from that culture or lifestyle and that’s all they know. 2. Trump vs. Sanders

...In current political affairs, there is a strong competition between the democratic candidate, Bernie Sanders and republican candidate, Donald Trump. Both of these candidates have somewhat different backgrounds and views and ideas, such as their past experiences (which definitely affects how they choose to react to some issues), their views about the current education system and how they might improvise on it. Sanders and Trump have very contrasting background experiences. Sanders has done hard work from the bottom up. He started off as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington, Vermont. But getting elected was not easy, he repeatedly ran and lost low level contests before he actually won. He soon became part of the House of Representatives and then finally of the U.S Senate.(“Meet Bernie”). We can conclude that Sanders has had political experience before. Trump meanwhile, inherited a lot of money from his father and used it to become a “real estate mogul” as The Week’s journalist Damon Linker puts it in his article. Trump wrote books about business and economics. He has been the subject of comedians, flash cartoon artists and online caricature artists. He has made appearances in various television series, films, and shows (“Donald Trump” Wikipedia). He has little or no past political experience. Both the candidates want to approach terrorism issues in extremely different ways. “We live in a difficult and dangerous world, and......

Bernie Sanders Tax Plan

...Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has identified key plans and the corresponding changes to the federal tax code that would fund these plans on his website. The revenues needed to pay for these plans would come from five primary sources: increases in (1) federal income taxes, (2) payroll taxes, (3) business income taxes, (4) estate/gift taxes, and (5) two new excise taxes. There is variance regarding the amount the plan would generate in a decade but the average is roughly $14.5 trillion. Aside from personal opinions regarding changes, the intrinsic questions seem to be- Will Bernie’s proposed changes to the tax code generate enough revenue to cover his plans? Economists’ predictions along with Sanders’s own estimates state that no, Sander’s tax plan will not be able to generate enough revenues to cover all of his plans as expansively larger taxes and governmental spending will severely damage long-term economic growth. In order to analyze Sander’s plan more in depth, it is beneficial to look at each proposed change to the federal tax code individually. First, increases in federal income taxes. There are many changes Sander’s has proposed in regards to income taxes but according to the Tax Policy Center, the three changes that are expected to generate the biggest portion of revenue over the next decade are: (1) four new surtax brackets for high-income households; (2) taxing of gains/dividends as ordinary income; and (3) raising the net investment income tax to 10......

Bernie Sanders

...Composition 26 November 2015 Candidate, Bernie Sanders, in his presidential announcement, explains to his audience all he is willing to do as president. Sanders’ purpose is to persuade the audience to vote for him as president. He adopts a stern tone in order to appeal to the audiences needs and wants in his announcement speech. Sanders opens his speech by thanking everyone for their support. “Thank you all very much for the support that you have given me over the years as the mayor of this great city, as Vermont’s only congressman and now as a U.S senator.” He uses ethos to prove that he is credible and that he already has political knowledge on what needs to be improved and what needs to change. Sanders refers to his audience as, “My fellow Americans” and “Brothers and sisters” to imply that we are all equal and need to come together as one. When he moves on to talking about protecting our most vulnerable Americans he uses anaphora in his speech. “At a time when millions… water economically, at a time when senior… increasing, at a time when millions…living in dire poverty. By saying “At a time” it puts emphasis on the fact that, while there are Americans struggling, senior poverty is increasing, and millions of kids living in dire poverty, they are providing huge tax breaks for the wealthiest families and raising taxes on working families. This makes his speech more effective, which helps gain support for his campaign. Sanders’ diction is highly effective......
