Use of Computer Aided Instruction in Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

...investigates the use of computer aided instruction (CAI) in teaching and learning mathematics. It also explores the use of Instructional Materials Aided Methods (IMAM) as a close substitute. From the study, it was clear that computer-aided instruction enhanced the students performance in mathematics The design of the study was experimental. The hypothesis were tested using T-ratio at 0.05 level of significance and a reliability index of 0.85 was calculated from the test items; while the data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Introduction One of the problems of teaching and learning is the method of imparting knowledge to learners. According to stone (1991), the major difficulty in sciences is the method by which the subjects were customarily taught without regard to instructional materials. The pedagogical approach in imparting knowledge to learners has become inadequate to their needs. Mathematics, like other science subjects, recorded poor students performance both in national and international examination (Ali, 1983). Many factors contributed to the performance of students in mathematics examination Akale, (1996), Okebukola and Jegede (1996), Ottiah (1997) and Ali (1998). The factors include: a. Inability of the mathematics teachers to put across the mathematics concepts to the students. b. Lack of skills and competence required for teaching mathematics. c. Shortage of qualified mathematics teachers. d. Lack of teaching materials and......

Teaching Economics with Computer

...Computers in Economics Education 1 The Role Computers Play in Economics Education Oluremilekun Ojo EDIT 6900 – Research Synthesis Computers in Economics Education 2 The Role Computers Play in Economics Education Introduction Schug identified that “economic education helps students develop the critical knowledge and skills they need as citizens to make intelligent decisions and to help shape economic policy” (as cited in Wentland, 2004, p. 640). According to Vowels, “teaching students economics, sometimes called the science of making decisions, is a key ingredient for helping them to become effective citizens, workers, voters, consumers, investors and participants in a healthy economy” (as cited in Wentland, 2004, p. 641). This research topic came about as a result of a current project with an economics teacher who would like to add some form of multimedia component into his syllabus. While trying to develop a suitable application for my client, I had to review the ways that technology is used to teach economics as my guide. In this process, I decided to conduct research into the role of computer technology in economics education. I was initially interested in how technology was introduced in to teaching economics and then retracing its journey into more contemporary uses of technology so that I can securely make predictions for the future. This approach was not very fruitful because I was unable to find articles that gave adequate information regarding......

Development and Validation of Instructional Material Using Mathematics Software

...become responsible citizens in a learning society and sustain employability throughout life in a knowledge economy. Thus, the researcher decided to formulate this research to provide our educational system one of the devices that will make a difference in the manner of teaching. In classrooms, technology can be a powerful catalyst for pedagogical change, as students use technology to take a more active role in personalizing their own education, and teachers take on new roles as facilitators of knowledge rather than knowledge transmitters. Our educational system as well as the curriculum has gone through many different changes and development. As defined, development is the systematic use of scientific and technical knowledge to meet specific objectives or requirements. It is the process of adding improvements to a theoretical or practical aspects of a concept, design, discovery, or invention. Curriculum development needs to pass into a proper examination and validation. On the other, validation is the process of checking data against a standard or criteria. It provides an independent means of assuring quality and acceptable results. State universities and colleges were now employing softwares and other computer-assisted instructional devices in their teaching. Some of the elementary schools also were now using their E-classroom for their everyday lesson. The researcher find out that Microsoft Mathematics Software may be used in teaching Mathematics. Effective Use of Instructional Materials in the Teaching of Basic Sciences

...Effective use of instructional materials in the teaching of basic sciences CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the study Education, according to Coombs (1970) consists of two components. He classified these two components into inputs and outputs. According to him, inputs consist of human and material resources and outputs are the goals and outcomes of the educational process. Both the inputs and outputs form a dynamic organic whole and if one wants to investigate and assess the educational system in order to improve its performance, effects of one component on the other must be examined. Instructional resources which are educational inputs are of vital importance to the teaching of any subject in the school curriculum. Wales (1975) was of the opinion that the use of instructional resources would make discovered facts glued firmly to the memory of students. Savoury (1958) also added that, a well-planned and imaginative use of visual aids in lessons should do much to banish apathy, supplement inadequacy of books as well as arouse student’s interest by giving them something practical to see and do, and at the same time helping to train them to think things out themselves. Savoury (1958) suggested a catalogue of useful visual aids that are good for teaching history i.e pictures, post cards, diagrams, maps, filmstrips and models. He said that selection of materials which are related to the basic contents of a course or a lesson, helps in-depth understanding of such a......

That can be seen through our LCD’s projector, flat screen televisions and flat screen computers. High Technologies are good but too much can be harmful. Eventhough it helps our life better and luxurious, it can teach us how to be lazy in doing things because we depend on it. Teaching Science, Mathematics, and Technology

...TEACHING SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, AND TECHNOLOGY Teaching Should Be Consistent With the Nature of Scientific Inquiry Science, mathematics, and technology are defined as much by what they do and how they do it as they are by the results they achieve. To understand them as ways of thinking and doing, as well as bodies of knowledge, requires that students have some experience with the kinds of thought and action that are typical of those fields. Teachers, therefore, should do the following: Start With Questions About Nature Sound teaching usually begins with questions and phenomena that are interesting and familiar to students, not with abstractions or phenomena outside their range of perception, understanding, or knowledge. Students need to get acquainted with the things around them—including devices, organisms, materials, shapes, and numbers—and to observe them, collect them, handle them, describe them, become puzzled by them, ask questions about them, argue about them, and then to try to find answers to their questions. Engage Students Actively Students need to have many and varied opportunities for collecting, sorting and cataloging; observing, note taking and sketching; interviewing, polling, and surveying; and using hand lenses, microscopes, thermometers, cameras, and other common instruments. They should dissect; measure, count, graph, and compute; explore the chemical properties of common substances; plant and cultivate; and systematically observe the......

Learning with Technology

...Learning with Technology Evidence that technology can, and does, support learning. A white paper prepared for Cable in the Classroom James M. Marshall, Ph.D. San Diego State University May 2002 Executive Summary “We’ve wired the schools — now what?” This question resonates with educators, and troubles them at the same time. After countless local and national efforts have boosted the infrastructure of our schools, the significant issues now arise. Should we continue to pump money into educational technology for our schools? Do computers really help students learn? How can students and teachers best learn from the World Wide Web and its content? These questions are not new, nor unique to the dawn of Internet-connected schools. Earlier technologies, from textbook and illustration to film, television, and multimedia computer, have prompted similar ponderings. If technology is to have a significant role in schools, we need assurance that it works. More emphatically, we need confidence that use of educational technology results in learning. Research, both historical and contemporary, suggests that technology-based instruction can and does result in learning. Witness these examples of television, multimedia, and computer technologies delivering content to support learning: • Watching the television program Blue’s Clues has strong effects on developing preschool viewers’ flexible thinking, problem solving, and prosocial behaviors (Bryant, Mullikin,......

The use of computers in education started in the 1960s. With the advent of convenient microcomputers in the 1970s, computer use in schools has become widespread from primary education through the university level and even in some preschool programs. Instructional computers are basically used in one of two ways: either they provide a straightforward presentation of data or they fill a tutorial role in which the student is tested on comprehension. If the computer has a tutorial program, the student is asked a question by the computer; the student types in an answer and then gets an immediate response to the answer. If the answer is correct, the student is routed to more challenging problems; if the answer is incorrect, various computer messages will......
