Dietary Supplements

...Dietary Supplements There has been much discussion about the effectiveness of taking a supplement every day. The benefit of taking this supplement every day is that is helps to prevent vitamin and nutrient deficiency in people of all ages. These vitamins are formulated to meet the daily recommended allowances for many types of conditions such as age and pregnancy. The benefits of taking a daily vitamin lie in the areas of strengthening our immune systems. This is especially true for the elderly and pregnant populations. For the elderly, such supplements can reduce their chances of infectious diseases and increase bone density. Women, who are pregnant or are planning on becoming pregnant, need additional folic acid to reduce the possibility of birth defects. Lastly, children benefit from taking a daily vitamin because they generally do not have a balanced diet that allows them to obtain all of the needed daily vitamins to aid in their growth and development. As in any type of supplement, more is not always good in mass quantity. Taking more than the daily recommended dosage of any supplement can, and will, lead to near-toxic levels in most people. High doses of certain vitamins can be toxic and lead to such things as diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea in most people. In some severe cases, this type of overload could lead to kidney failure. Dietary Counseling

...Diseases associated with overeating, under eating, and dietary or nutritional imbalance rank among the leading causes of illness and death in the United States. This study will address the relationship between specific dietary elements and specific health outcomes. Also the role of dietary counseling has been extensively investigated to see the actual effectiveness achieved through counseling. In order to address the question of the role of diet in chronic diseases in Americans the University of North Carolina Evidence-based Practice Center undertook a systematic evidence review. This studies goal is to better address the relationship between diet and health outcomes and the issues relating to the effectiveness of interventions to change dietary patterns, with the focus on dietary counseling. In order to identify studies examining the question of the relationship between diet and health, they identified existing systematic reviews from MEDLINE, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the University of York Database of Reviews of Effectiveness from 1990 to the present. Limitations on searches were to human population and the English language. Articles were included if they evaluated a nutrition intervention, that assessed the impact on dietary change among those at risk of chronic disease. However studies were excluded of individuals with a diagnosed illness that might directly affect their dietary intake, required a special diet, or required entry into a study......

...Dietary Intake and Risk Factors for Poor Diet Quality Among Children in Nova Scotia Paul J. Veugelers, PhD1 Angela L. Fitzgerald, MSc, PDt2 Elizabeth Johnston, PhD, PDt, FDC3 ABSTRACT Objective: Public health policies promote healthy nutrition but evaluations of children’s adherence to dietary recommendations and studies of risk factors of poor nutrition are scarce, despite the importance of diet for the temporal increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity. Here we examine dietary intake and risk factors for poor diet quality among children in Nova Scotia to provide direction for health policies and prevention initiatives. Methods: In 2003, we surveyed 5,200 grade five students from 282 public schools in Nova Scotia, as well as their parents. We assessed students’ dietary intake (Harvard’s Youth Adolescent Food Frequency Questionnaire) and compared this with Canadian food group and nutrient recommendations. We summarized diet quality using the Diet Quality Index International, and used multilevel regression methods to evaluate potential child, parental and school risk factors for poor diet quality. Results: In Nova Scotia, 42.3% of children did not meet recommendations for milk products nor did they meet recommendations for the food groups ‘Vegetables and fruit’ (49.9%), ‘Grain products’ (54.4%) and ‘Meat and alternatives’ (73.7%). Children adequately met nutrient requirements with the exception of calcium and fibre, of which intakes were low, and dietary fat and......

What are the benefits and/or risks of taking them? Does the government regulate them like they do prescription medications? Do dietary supplements help with diseases or ailments and do they have risks attached to them? Dietary supplements are vitamins, minerals, herbs and other substances intended to improve the diet. They come in several different forms; pills, capsules, powders and liquids. (Dietary Supplements, 2012) There are proven benefits from taking dietary supplements; when a proper diet is not followed daily the body needs dietary supplements to ensure it is receiving all the nutrients necessary to function properly. Vitamin D, A and calcium are necessary for bone health, they both help to keep the bones strong and they help prevent bone loss. Vitamin A also supports vision. Vitamin K helps in the clotting of blood. Vitamin E strengthens the immune system and assists in repairing deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Pregnant women may get a recommendation from their doctor to take a folic acid supplement to reduce the risk of birth defects for their child. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can impair the body’s ability to heal and protect it; a multivitamin for anyone that does not eat a proper diet as recommended by the food pyramid is probably a good choice. They supplement (add to) the diet and should not be considered a substitute for food. What are some benefits of taking dietary supplements? Some supplements may help to assure that you get an adequate dietary intake of essential nutrients. However, supplements should not replace the variety of foods that are important to a healthful diet — so, be sure you eat a variety of foods as well. Unlike drugs, supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure diseases. That means supplements should not make claims, such as "reduces arthritic pain" or "treats heart disease." Claims like these can only legitimately be made for drugs, not dietary supplements. What are some risks from taking dietary supplements? Yes. Many supplements contain active ingredients that have strong biological effects in the body. This could make them unsafe in some situations and hurt or complicate your health. For example, the following actions could lead to harmful — even life-threatening — consequences.
