Ender’s ability to defeat an entire alien race was not done by himself. The people that he was surrounded by had a substantial impact on his intelligence and overall personality. Colonel Graff’s out of the box thinking laid down the stepping-stones that would allow Ender to become the great military leader and strategist that helped him defeat the buggers. Graff made many difficult decisions that seemed irrelevant at the time but proved very critical to Ender’s success. Mazer Rackham didn’t have much time to mould Ender into what the world needed, however he used the time that was given to him very effectively. Mazer modeled Ender after himself because he himself had once defeated the buggers single headedly just like Ender was born to do. The person of utmost importance to Ender is his sister Valentine. She not only shaped him into a great leader but her opinion was also the only other opinion that Ender listened to other than his own. She was the only person that could convince Ender to use his talents to save human kind from the bugger’s

As the earth became overly populated, a rule was put in place that one family could have no more than two kids. The Wiggin family was an exception to that rule due to the overlying potential of their two previous children in Peter and Valentine. Although Peter and Valentine both showed signs of incredible intelligence, Peter was deemed to be too violent and Valentine too empathic. The International Fleet hoped that by the Wiggin family giving birth to a third child he could be the balance between both Peter and Valentine. Ender Wiggin was that third child and was born to be the leader of the International Fleet. Colonel Graff knew even before Ender was born that he was going to be the one to defeat the buggers. There relationship started off rough when Graff toke away Ender’s monitor and made him believe that he had failed just like his two siblings. After Ender’s monitor was taken out, the school bully confronted him. Ender’s “Peter” side came out and he not only beat up the bully but also hit him while he was down so that the bully would never want to attack him again. Ender knew that since he no longer had the monitor in him that there would be nobody watching over him all the time. The only way to get the bully to leave him alone was to show the bully that he was not to be messed with. Hitting the bully while he was down was not only done out of anger but also by strategy. The decision to take out Ender’s monitor was one of the many tough decision made by Colonel Graff in the hopes to turn Ender into a military genius. Graff also made the decision to try to isolate Ender from everyone else in the hopes that Ender would never trust anyone but himself. The first thing that Graff said on the space shuttle about Ender was how smart he was and how everyone else should be learning from him. That instantly made the rest of the boys on the shuttle resent Ender because he was smarter than they were. Graff also made Ender the youngest commander, isolating him even more than he already was. All of these decisions looked dumb and pointless when they were made but the decisions by Graff laid down the stepping-stones for Ender’s success. And even though their relationship didn’t start out very well, in the end Colonel Graff’s relationship with Ender prove to be vital to Ender success and to the rest of the world.

Although Mazer Rackham and Ender were only with each other for a very short period of time, Mazer relationship with Ender was very substantial. Mazer Rackham had a positive relationship with Ender and spent a lot of time with Ender improving his military strategy. He showed Ender how he was able to defeat the buggers in the first war. Since nobody other than high-ranking International Fleet officers even knew that Mazer Rackham was alive, let alone how he was able to defeat the buggers, Mazer Rackham gained Ender’s trust right away. Mazer Rackham showed Ender how the buggers think and communicate to each other. They don’t communicate by talking but through their queen bugger. If she is destroyed than the rest of the buggers don’t know what to do. They think as a unit and cannot think for themselves. It is both their strength and weakness. Mazer Rackham taught Ender everything that he knew and shaped him into a military genius. Ender not only listened to Mazer Rackham’s advice and teachings but he put them to use in the simulations and battles. He learned how the buggers would attack and using Mazer Rackham’s teachings, defended them to absolute perfection. Eventually Mazer’s teachings would prove to very important and influential to Ender because they helped Ender and the International Fleet defeat the buggers for the last time.

Ender’s heroics would have never happened if it weren’t for his older sister Valentine. She is the only person that could convince Ender that he had to go to battle school and help save the world. When he didn’t want to go and leave his family she was the one that convince him that if he didn’t go than the world would be attacked by the buggers and eventually taken over by the buggers. This relationship is based on trust and love towards each other from a very young age. Valentine is the only person that Ender truly loves and Valentine is the only person that truly loves Ender. You can tell how much of an influence Valentine has on Ender because Colonel Graff uses Valentine as inspiration for Ender to continue his studies. She not only loves him deeply but also protects him from Peter. When Ender’s monitor is taken out Peter puts the bugger mask on Ender and demands to play buggers and astronauts. While this is happening Valentine is trying to appeal to Peter nicer side to get him to stop hurting Ender. That cemented how much Valentine and Ender care for each other. Their relationship stays the same throughout the entire book with them both caring and listening to each other’s advice. Out of every person that Ender gets to meet and build a relationship with, the one that means the most to him is that between Valentine and himself.

In conclusion, Ender Wiggin got lots of help from many different people throughout the book. Colonel Graff is the one that paved the way to Ender’s military success. Although their relationship starts off as a tough one, with Graff isolating Ender from all the other boys, it turns around towards the end of the book. Ender eventually realizes that Colonel Graff did everything that he did for a reason and without him he would not of had the military success that he did. Mazer Rackham was one of the most influential people in Ender Wiggin’s life. He wasn’t involved with Ender’s life until it came close to the second war but he taught Ender every military strategy that he knew. Since Mazer Rackham was the one that won the first war, Ender listened closely to Mazer’s words and used them on the battlefield and won the war with them. The relationship with the utmost importance the Ender was the one he had with his older sister Valentine. She was the only one that he had ever loved and she was the only one that ever loved him. She was the one that had convinced Ender to go to battle school and even Colonel Graff uses his love for her to get him to continue with his studies at Battle School. In the end all these people that Ender surrounded himself helped him on his pathway to defeating the buggers and saving the world.…...

Online Encounter vs. Physical Encounter

...Emily Miles Marketing 505 March 6, 2012 Exam #1 In the following paragraphs I will attempt to show how the attributes of an online encounter do indeed match those of a service product, even if machine and not person produced. Over the past decade, online encounters have shown to be more effective, less costly and provide faster service from both a consumer perspective and also a provider perspective. However, online encounters also have some of the same management issues that have always been and most likely will always be. Looking at both processes, we can determine improvements and also similarities. First, let’s examine the method of how services provided have changed over the years. Many years ago, when a person needed a product or service, they went to the store or the business office that provided that service. A meeting with a company spokesman was made and discussions were centered on what was needed and what price would be charged. After both parties were in agreement, some money and contracts may or may not have been exchanged. The main issues are that an agreement was made for some service to be performed at a future date. After the services were complete, the payments or the balance of the payments were also completed. Looking at the total transaction, let’s review the process. The consumer had to travel to the business, meet with the provider and explain what was needed. This takes time, energy, fuel and hours out of the consumer’s day. Planning......

Legal Encounters

...Legal Encounters Legal Encounters In week five Team C examined three scenarios in which a company, NewCorp may or may not have done something illegal. The scenarios were examined and the results written to be handed to management to make a decision on a course of action. The team was responsible for providing management of any potential breaches of law that may have occurred. Legal Encounter One Pat has the right to ask for the reason he is being let go. However, NewCorp does not have to divulge this information because they are an at will employment company. NewCorp, does no t have to tell why Pat is being let go, and it is in their best interest to protect that information. However, if NewCorp at any time told Pat the reason for the termination was related to performance they are liable to uphold the " Notice of Unsatisfactory Performance/Corrective Action Plan." By giving Pat a company document that stated: " If the job performance of an employee is unsatisfactory, the employee will be notified of the deficiency and placed on a corrective action plan. If the employee’s performance does not improve to a satisfactory level in the specified time period, termination will follow." NewCorp has entered into a contract to do just that. This is protected under the contract law, which states "A contract is a legally enforceable promise" (“Breach of Contract Law & Legal Definition,” 2012) in the event of a breach of contract a civil case can be......

...Legal Encounters LaTausha Freeman Law/531 December 10, 2012 Lillian Watson Legal Encounters This paper will answer questions posed during employment legal encounters based on law requirements to indicate liability and ramifications associated based on the scenario. Legal Encounter 1 Cheeseman outlines that employment is subject to the common law of contracts (2010). Pat entered into an agreement with NewCorp for employment; acting on the premise that NewCorp would uphold all terms of the employment agreement, made major personal and financial changes to be available for employment at the assigned duty location. Although Pat signed a document acknowledging his understanding that NewCorp had the freedom to discharge at will—Pats supervisor told Pat he was being discharged because “things weren’t working out”. NewCorp did not follow company procedure to notify Pat of unsatisfactory performance and neglected to offer a Corrective Action Plan. NewCorp, having a signed copy of the discharge at will document, could argue that the company was not required to offer Pat notification or the opportunity to follow the Corrective Action Plan process. An important factor in this instance is the implication that Pat is being released based on unsatisfactory performance. NewCorp is terminating the employment contract without complying with all clauses of the employment contract and as a result Pat is taking a financial loss. Additionally, an employer under the......

Enders Game

...life is to be the leaders of the army that defends Earth from the "Third Invasion." Ender is one of those children. Andrew Wiggin's very birth was government mandated, where most families are allowed only two children, but the government requisitioned his birth. After a short six years of torment from his genius older brother Peter, and love from his genius older sister Valentine, Ender is recruited into the army after passing tests, and quickly rises to the top of the class. Loved and hated by other students at Battle School, Ender is isolated by his success, in the games that the students play, and by his teachers treatment of his excellence. The adults do not give him the chance to settle in and find a peer group instead they push him with such urgency that they are willing to break the entire Battle School system down. Colonel Graff, the one who found and groomed Ender, runs Battle School and risks his reputation, and humanity's existence, on his strong belief that Ender is the one who can defeat the Buggers. Battle School consists of games. there is a Fantasy Game, a game room (like an arcade), and the battle room, where war games are played in zero gravity. The battle room plays a key role in Battle School, and students often get so caught up in the game that they seldom realize that they're at the school to defeat the Buggers. One such student, Bonzo Madrid, comes to hate Ender, and Bonzo plans to kill him. Ender's excellence pulls through in battle after......

Encounters

...Suré Barnard An encounter can be described as either 'an unexpected or casual meeting' or 'a confrontation or unpleasant clash between hostile factions or persons' or it could be both. It is impossible for a story to unfold without an encounter happening in some way or another, even if it is simply the chance meeting of two people, never mind the deeper connection that will occur. At the beginning of his book, David Medalie states that "every story presents an 'encounter' [...] some are interpersonal, some socio-political [and] some ideological" (1997: x-xi). This essay will look at the 'encounters' that can be seen in Kwashiorkor and The Barren Woman. Kwashiorkor (2009: 31-43), written by Can Themba, is the story of a baby who has a very serious disease due to a lack of nutrition, which is brought about by the harsh circumstances of her upbringing and a lack of money to buy the necessary foods required by a child. The most important encounter that can be found in the story is when Dave, a journalist and the narrator of the story, meets the child for the first time. In this encounter, the kwashiorkor baby is an encounter with the extreme reality of suffering. It forces Dave to realise that the detachment that he and his sister, Eileen, usually live with does not make the problem go away. The disease is also a symbolic representation of South Africa at the time and the suffering that was going on daily to which people merely turned a blind eye. Dave also comes to this......

Legal Encounter

...Legal Encounter 2 Sam's conduct is an example of a sexual harassment which raises the possibility of quid pro quo suit, where an employee is required to submit to sexual advances in order to remain employed, or secure a promotion or a raise. His conduct has made NewCorp also liable for an atmosphere- of-harassment case, in which the invitations, language, pictures, or suggestions become so pervasive that they create a hostile work environment (Jennings, 2006). In 1986 the Supreme Court ruled that sexual harassment was actionable under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Supreme Court in Harris v. Forklift Systems, Inc., in 1993 made it easier for plaintiffs suing for sexual harassment by ruling that they were not required to prove that any abusive conduct actually caused an injury or affected the person's psychological well-being. Attorneys for such plaintiffs now only have to prove that a "reasonable person" would have found the conduct to be offensive to win their case (Sack, 1998).  Thus Sam's behavior which created a hostile working environment for Paula put NewCorp at risk of sexual harassment lawsuit from Paula. Sam's later action of blocking Paula's transfer, if deemed that he took it as an agent of NewCorp and especially in a supervisory role, made NewCorp further liable for violating the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA). The PDA is a statute passed in 1978 that amended Title VII, the central federal anti-discrimination statute. Later in 1991 in......

Ender Wiggins Character Analysis

...Cayla Rosenbaum English II – 2 10/7/14 Ender Wiggin: The Boy Who Could. When thinking of a powerful commander with the correct intellect and skill to save the world, I doubt anyone pictures an eleven year old. However, Ender Wiggin from Orson Scott Cards novel Ender’s Game is not your typical, brainless eleven year old. In fact, he shows more courage, capability, and adaptability than most middle-aged adults. Using these raw skills Ender Wiggin saves the world at the fresh age of eleven. Ender shows multiple examples of courage throughout the book specifically in chapter fourteen when Ender makes the ruthless yet courageous decision to blow the bugger home planet to pieces. “Then he whispered a command and the ships dropped like rocks toward the planet’s surface…. Almost from the moment they began to drop they were focusing their Little Doctors on one thing only. The Planet itself” (294). Young Ender wasn’t expected to go so far as to blow the planet itself up, but because of his courage he went above and beyond all expectations. Because of Ender’s courageous personality he is completely capable of the task at hand. In fact Ender had been showing signs of capability since he was six. “Ender knew the unspoken rules of manly warfare, even though he was six.” (7). Ender unknowingly used his “knowledge of manly warfare” to show his capability of being the next commander and saving the world five years later by literally beating the young boy into a pulp, to show the......

Ender Wiggin: Brilliant, Yet Forlorn

...novel Ender’s Game tells the story of an imperiled mankind after two wars with the buggers, an alien species. In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, Earth’s children, including Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, are trained to become future commanders for the third invasion. At the school, Ender's tactical smarts are revealed, which eventually lead him to become commander of the International Fleet. He ends the war by annihilating the entire bugger species. Throughout the novel, it becomes clear that Ender is a very complex character; he is a genius, but extremely lonely. Ender is a very intelligent child. He is six years old at the beginning of the novel, yet he can talk, write, and think like an accomplished Quantum Physicist. Although he is still a child, it is clear from the novel that good things do come in small packages; his small size is merely a container for brilliance. Ender is a tremendous leader. He is aware of exactly how to instill confidence, competence, and unity in people he works with. Before being promoted commander of the Dragon Army, Ender is a soldier in the Salamander Army, commanded by Bonzo Madrid, a rude and terrible leader with Spanish pride. Bonzo’s methods of leadership include instilling fear into his soldiers. Being under Bonzo’s command shows Ender what true leadership is, and helps him in the long run when he becomes commander of the Dragon Army. He leads his soldiers with respect, and does not develop any personal relationships......

Fake Encounter

...FAKE ENCOUNTERS IN INDIA Aastha Maheswari 1) Distinguish between fake encounters and genuine encounters? Ans: A fake encounter is where a person has been killed in cold blood, and not in self-defence, Whereas a genuine encounter is that in which a person has been killed in self-defence. If somebody is firing at you, and the only way to stop him from killing or grievously injuring you is to shoot back, in that case you’re a part of a genuine encounter. Whereas a fake encounter is when you catch hold of somebody and kill him in cold blood. There is absoutely no threat to you. The Central and State governments generally interpret the word, encounter, to mean genuine encounters, with fake encounters being an exception rather than the rule. Those fighting for civil liberties, however, say that the dividing line between genuine and fake encounters is rather tenuous and argued that most of the cases considered by the police as genuine are indeed fake. 2) Does the police have the right to kill the suspects? Why do they resort to take such extreme measures? Ans: The Indian law recognizes the right of a citizen to private defence , and this same right is available to the policemen too. Thus, If the police is firing in an attempt to arrest a person accused of an offence punishable with death or imprisonment of life by the court orders, in that case the encounter cannot be termed as illegal or fake. However, if a death is caused in an ecounter that cannot be justified on the ground......

...that none of the characters are accustomed to this environment and therefore do not know what is coming their way. Deceptive appearances may cause confusion and allow evil to flourish in serious situations. In the play and movie directed by Rupert Goold, Macbeth’s character is sustained, but is portrayed differently in both. In the play, Macbeth is the thane of Glamis and a Scottish general who is introduced as a hero. This is proved when Duncan says “No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive...And with his former title greet Macbeth.”(1.2-73-75) This quote confirms that Macbeth is a worthy soldier because he puts his country to an advantage in the current war which was happening. Macbeth is portrayed as a righteous man until he encounters the witches whereas in the movie, Macbeth is portrayed as someone evil from the beginning. In the movie, the character of Macbeth is portrayed as evil because of his appearance. This is proven when Macbeth first enters wearing dirty dark clothing and his facial expressions. His clothing shows that Macbeth is a dark character and his facial expressions are mostly blank leaving suspicion amongst the audience on whether or not he is going to do something detrimental again. In the end, appearances can cause uncertainty but may be an advantage to someone else. Both William Shakespeare and Rupert Goolds interpretation of the play uphold Macbeth’s character as evil and wicked. However, Goolds interpretation differs from Shakespeare’s......

Consumer Encounters

...Running head: CONSUMER ENCOUNTERS Consumer Encounters Consumer Encounters The product and service quality are tested at each encounter, so for this reason managers have to be prepared for each possible one. The Unique Experiences of a Navy Wife is a book directed towards two groups (1) North American females in the ages between 18 to 25 years and (2) North American males in the ages between 25 to 43. To be successful during the purchasing process it is important to reach consumers’ expectations and being prepared for each encounter. Consumer Expectations Beliefs about service’s performance or product’s attributes at some time in the future are the definition of consumer expectations; they are also a key determinant of satisfaction (Rust, Inman & Zahorik, 1999). Purchasers form expectations for many foundations, such as word of mouth, advertising and past experiences. These expectations are compared with the performance of the service or product and if it is below the purchaser expectation, he or she will be disappointed. However, if it meets or exceeds expectations the consumer will look forward to use the same provider again and recommend it (Kotler & Keller, 2007). Expectations of readers and purchasers can be found by a consumer expectation survey administrated to a sample of the selected target. Nevertheless, managers can have an idea using the patterns of the segment selected. Initial Encounter with the book search process For many in the......

Service Encounter

...5. My Service Encounter Essay Reflections Through the course of my service encounter essay, I feel that I have learnt many new things about services marketing and have improved a variety of my personal skills as well as developing many new skills. This essay has really made me more aware of the amount of interactions that I have with services on a daily basis and the role that they play within my life. Also, the fact that services, on their own, account for more than 70% of our nations GDP really outlines the importance that there is on developing effective marketing strategies. 5.1 One of the most important factors that I can take from this essay is the importance of building relationships between the customer and the firm through marking techniques. One of the main reasons for failure within services firms is the fact that they concentrate far too much on initially attracting customers and not enough emphasis on customer retention. When I enter the business world I will ensure that I pay huge attention toward building relationships with my customers and this will enable me to sustain constant growth of sales through an extensive customer base. I have also been able to understand the importance of the service environment toward the perceptions of the customers. I think that in the future I will pay much more attention to the environment that I am being given a service within and the effect that various emotional cues and aspects have on me as a customer so that I can......
