...Are you a winner? This training course is called English for Winners, and before you delve into it, we should find out together if it is for you. Do you want to be a winner? Most English learners are unhappy with their English ability. If you ask the average English learner to assess their skills, you're very likely to get one of these answers: "I studied English at school for more than 5 years, but my English is not so good." "I speak a little English, but I think it's just 'school English'." "I understand it a little, but I can't speak it fluently." "My grammar is very bad. I've often tried to learn the grammar rules, but they're too complicated for me." "I had good school grades in English but I still can't speak it very well." These are typical complaints, and they make it clear that very few learners are really happy with the quality of their English. Most of them realize that their efforts are not yielding the results they expect. But instead of changing their strategy and trying to find the right learning methods and techniques, they simply give up. They think that they "just don't have a talent for learning languages". The winners, however, are those English learners who have taken control of their own programs. They know that acquiring English is an ongoing process. It is something that happens every day, day in and day out. They also understand that when it comes to learning English any progress is success. ©EnglishForWinners, Page 1 of 34 Dear Listener, since......

Project Work in Teaching English

... The theme of the course paper is “Project Work in Teaching English”. The objectives of the paper are to highlight the importance of project work in teaching English, to describe its main peculiarities and types, to discover how it influences the students during the educational process and if it helps to learn the language. The problem of using project work in teaching English is of great importance. Project work is characterized as one of the most effective methods of teaching and learning a foreign language through research and communication, different types of this method allow us to use it in all the spheres of the educational process. It involves multi-skill activities which focus on a theme of interest rather than of specific language tasks and helps the students to develop their imagination and creativity. Nevertheless, teachers are not keen on the idea of providing project work into their lessons because of the disadvantages this method has. The main idea of project work is considered to be based on teaching students through research activities and stimulating their personal interest. The research topic of the course paper is the process of teaching and learning a foreign language with the help of project work. ...Ch r i s t i n e Ro e ll Intercultural Training with Films ilms are a great medium to use not only to practice English, but also to facilitate intercultural learning. Today English is a global language spoken by people from many countries and cultural backgrounds. Since culture greatly impacts communication, it is helpful for teachers to introduce lessons and activities that reveal how different dialects, forms of address, customs, taboos, and other cultural elements influence interaction among different groups. Numerous films contain excellent examples of intercultural communication and are highly useful resources for teachers. Additional reasons for teachers to incorporate films in class and encourage their students to watch movies in English include: • Films combine pleasure and learning by telling a story in a way that captures and holds the viewer’s interest. • Films simultaneously address different senses and cognitive channels. For example, spoken language is supported by visual elements that make it easier for students to understand the dialogues and the plot. • Students are exposed to the way people actually speak. 2 2010 N u m b e r F • Films involve the viewers, appeal to their feelings, and help them empathize with the protagonists. • DVDs usually come with subtitles in English, which facilitates understanding and improves reading skills. After discussing the importance of teaching intercultural communication and suggesting films that match specific......

English Project Proposal

...Matt McKenzie Danielle Defoe English 4, MWF 10-1050 October 29, 2007 English Project Proposal Title: Etiquette Education Versus the High Cost for It (still working on the title) Topic and why it interested me: Education today can cost a lot of money, time, effort, and more. Thousands of students go away to school after they graduate from high school, and they will spend several years after graduating from college paying for it. College and university costs for tuition, living costs, and a social life adds up fast. The University of California at Davis annual tuition costs well over $14,000. Sacramento State University annual tuition is $11,000. Stanford University for a year costs well over $30,000. Harvard University’s annual costs for living and education is well over $41,000. Many colleges cost so much for students to live and go to school that after they graduate they will still be paying for their school for several more years. Student loans totaling well over $200,000 because of interest and the high cost of an education in today’s world. I’m interested in this topic because I can relate to it and so many of my own friends are in this same situation in different stages though. $200,000 could buy a lot of different things from a nice sports car or a house. It is ridiculous for college to cost that much money. Where does all the money go any way? How much do these college professors make in a year? Why does a college education have to cost so......

...Diagnosing Cancer PA #2 Joseph Amado 22205484 Part One: Abstract History has a fascinating way of making itself. There are certainly many different accomplishments that make history and it time for cancer to be brought up in history. You would be surprised but the study of the human body actually started in the early 15th century. This was during the Renaissance period of our country and knowledge for the human body was right around the corner. Body autopsies were being done frequently to help understand how the body functions. A man by the name of Giovanni Morgagni started the process of studying cancer by doing autopsies that that connected to the patient’s death. Another man came into the picture around the time of 18th century named John Hunter. He made the suggestion that the cancer could be cured through surgery and that it can physically be removed from the body. Later after that idea they created an anesthesia that will allow the surgery to happen. During the 19th century they started using the microscope to help them study diseased tissue. The microscope was a great advance in technology at the time and gave them the extra edge to go deeper and see clearly. With the new invention they could go into surgery only removing the diseased tissue and advance then to see deeper in the human body. With cancer being such a big problem more and more scientist tried to tackle this disease and make theories about them. For example there was the humoral theory, lymph......

...Week 4 group project Nova Biomedical USA Final Draft You have asked me to research and analyze a company that we could potentially enter into a mutually beneficial business agreement with. According to research I have gathered from several different sources Nova Biomedical USA would be an excellent candidate. We have the potential to meet all of their staffing needs, just as they have the ability to become a profitable contract for us. Nova Biomedical develops, manufactures and sells advanced technology blood testing analyzers based on electrochemical and optical measuring techniques. They employ over 1,000 people and have sales and service subsidiaries in 7 countries and distributors in over 90 other countries. Nova has manufacturing facilities in Waltham and Billerica, Massachusetts, as well as Taipei, Taiwan (Unknown, 2012) “Nova is one of the 25 largest in vitro diagnostic companies in the world and the largest privately owned in vitro diagnostic company in the United States." (Unknown, 2012) As the above quote from Nova's website states they are a large company and are involved in a global industry. This is one reason Nova is a good fit for Kelly Services. In the past decade Nova had been through some trying times and a major change. They have been through two significant intellectual property lawsuits involving patents and trade secrets (Salzman, 2013). Though they came out......

...you may all need time to adjust. Our suggestion is to start slowly, be patient, and be persistent. 1. How big should groups be? a. Even two people are a group. b. Generally speaking, the smaller the group, the more each member talks and the less chance there is that someone will be left out. Also, smaller groups require fewer group management skills and can usually come to decisions faster. Thus, when starting with cooperative learning, groups of two or three may be best. c. Larger groups are good because they provide more people for doing big tasks; they increase the variety of people in a group in terms of skills, personalities, backgrounds, etc.; and they reduce the number of groups for the teacher to monitor.  October 1994 • English Teaching Forum d. Six seems to be the maximum size that most books recommend. However, many people prefer groups of four or less. For example, Kagan (1992) suggests foursomes and uses many cooperative-learning structures in which students first work in pairs, and then two sets of these pairs interact as a foursome. 2. How should groups be formed? a. Most experts on cooperative learning suggest that teacher-selected groups are best, at least until students become proficient at collaboration. Teacher-selected groups usually aim to achieve a heterogeneous mix. Such a mix promotes peer tutoring, helps to break down barriers among different types of students, and encourages on-task behaviours. b. In creating teacher-assigned teams,......

It is not enough to know how to translate words into different languages. One of the aims of language learning is to help students learn effective communication, thus learning the correct grammar is essential. As noted by many grammarians, studying a second language primarily consisted of grammatical analysis and translation of written forms.  Developed for analysis of Greek and Latin, this approach divided the target language into eight parts of speech: nouns, verbs, participles, articles, pronouns, prepositions, adverbs and conjunctions. Learning the language required study of the eight categories in written text and the development of rules for their use in translation.             However, when 18th century grammarians moved beyond the Greek and Roman classics and began the study of English, again using the eight categories to generate grammar rules, it became clear that the parts of speech could......

This student moved to the United States at the age of 12. He spoke no English at all and had accomplished to learn English on his own determination by speaking with his adoptive parents, playing video games, and watching television. After enrolling in school he was classified and enrolled as an English Language Learner. This student has excelled at tremendous speeds. Now that he is a junior in high school, he is at a high L3 and by test scores would be considered an advanced L4 or early L5.
