Feasibility Analysis in Project Management- An Empirical Study By Dr. Cynthia Menezes, Associate Professor and Research Guide And Raghunandan G, Research Scholar, Canara Bank School of Management Studies, Bangalore University

Abstract: The system analyst gives a project meaning and direction. It is necessary to know what the problem is before it can be solved. This leads to a preliminary survey or an initial investigation to determine whether an alternative system can solve the problem.

Depending on the results of the initial investigation, the survey is expanded to a more detailed feasibility study. A feasibility study is a test of a system proposal according to its workability, impact on the organization, ability to meet user needs, and effective use of resources. It focuses on three major questions such as what are the user’s demonstrable needs and how does a candidate system meet them, what resources are available for given candidate systems, whether the problem is worth solving, what could be the likely impact of the candidate system on the organization and how well it is within the organization’s master MIS plan. Each of these questions must be answered carefully because they revolve around investigation and evaluation of the problem, identification and description of candidate systems, specification or performance and the cost of each system and final selection of the best system.

The objective of feasibility study is to acquire a sense of its scope. During the study the problem definition is crystallized and aspects of the problem to be included in the system are determined. This paper examines how feasibility analysis is done practically. Twelve systems analysts of different companies will be approached with a questionnaire and the results of the analysis will be presented in this paper.

Project Planning and Feasibility Studies

...5. Project Planning and Feasibility Studies Project planning is part of project management, which relates to the use of schedules such as Gantt charts to plan and subsequently report progress within the project environment. Initially, the project scope is defined and the appropriate methods for completing the project are determined. Following this step, the durations for the various tasks necessary to complete the work are listed and grouped into a work breakdown structure. The logical dependencies between tasks are defined using an activity network diagram that enables identification of the critical path. Float or slack time in the schedule can be calculated using project management software. Then the necessary resources can be estimated and costs for each activity can be allocated to each resource, giving the total project cost. At this stage, the project plan may be optimized to achieve the appropriate balance between resource usage and project duration to comply with the project objectives. Once established and agreed, the plan becomes what is known as the baseline. Progress will be measured against the baseline throughout the life of the project. Analyzing progress compared to the baseline is known as earned value management. The inputs of the project planning phase include the project charter and the concept proposal. The outputs of the project planning phase include the project requirements, the project schedule, and the project management plan. Feasibility......

Analysis Project

...Analysis Project Steven Camp IT/235 May 31, 2015 George Cognet Analysis Project Kudler fine foods is a rapidly growing online retail business that needs photography services just like any other business. This makes the company reach a decision-making point on whether or not to outsource its photography services. Such initiative has both advantages and disadvantages that come the managers of all the decision-making must put in place before making a move. Some of the disadvantages of outsourcing photography services include: the possibilities of losing total control over the process of the professional resulting in results that may have not been envisioned by the company owners. The photography process is always an internal and in-line with the photographer’s imagination that an external party may not fully understand. After photography charges or costs may incur, a professional photographer is likely to charge extra costs and what would obviously be attained at minimal cost is conducted internally by the company representatives. The risk of privacy and confidentiality issues may occur, and external photographer may not put into considerations the necessary security and privacy needed in using the company images and information. This may result in some images going to the competitors business and may work against the company owners. Outsourcing professional photographer may eventually lead to job losses within the company. However, there are some advantages to......

Feasibility Analysis

...to determine whether or not the planned investment idea is feasible. The feasibility of an investment has to be considered with respect to several different aspects in order to determine whether the investment should be realized or not. Carrying out a feasibility analysis is therefore one of the most critical steps in the decision-making process. A feasibility analysis is an effective analytical tool that can be used to evaluate investments from various perspectives, e.g. technical, social, legal, financial, market, and organizational. Financial feasibility is often a predominant factor in feasibility analysis, as most investments are not realized if they do not generate profit for the project owners. The focus of this thesis is on financial feasibility analysis and its application in the decision-making process. Precision and reliability of feasibility analysis relies on the accuracy of information used in the analysis. The appropriate level of detail has to be decided with respect to what stage the investment is on. On early stages the level of uncertainty is often high, but as the investment opportunity evolves information become more detailed and reliable. As uncertainty can highly affect the results of the analysis, the level of detail has to be taken into account when basing decisions on the results. To assess the feasibility of investments relevant criteria have to be chosen. Feasibility calculations need to be done with care and the complexity of the......
