The Field Training Officers Program: What Challenges Do Police Face?

Is enough time given for officers in the field training program ?

In policing, officers training for active duty policing are usually required to receive specialized classroom training and certification to meet state requirements (such as POST, TCLEOSE or EMT) before performing field training duties for the department they work for. A new trainee usually only works with a Field Training Officer for a set amount of time until they are deemed as “Qualified and knowledgeable enough to work on their own.” During this training period the new officer typically trains with a Field Training Officer for roughly 3-4 months, the officer will sometimes have specialized Field Training Officers and will work with numerous Field Training Officers during this time period.
With the Field Training Officers having the job of being an exceptional example and role model for the trainee, and having the responsibility of making sure that the trainee has been thoroughly trained in all areas of policing, it is usually up to the Filed Training Officer to evaluate the trainees progress and make the call that the trainee is ready to work on his own.

Should there be a standard field training program that all police departments follow?

How does the field training officers program differ in other police departments ?

The purpose is to look and evaluate the challenges of the field training officers program.

By looking at the challenges of the field training officers program we will be able to pose the question if there can be more improvement.
