To Financial Aid Department,

I am Alexis Walker-Jackson petitioning for reinstatement of financial aid, due to the fact of a hardship year. To begin with, I was a freshman to Grossmont College, I was unfamiliar with the standards of classes, and I was not sure on what I wanted with furthering my education. I took some classes to figure out where my mindset was at, and to see how college would be for me, since I had only attended resources class from the start of six grade and throughout high school as well. I was so used to having the one on one attention to be there when I needed help. I had an additionally services such as individual instructions, a personal advocate, study group and many more additional accommodation to my needs. School for me was a challenge throughout my 12years because I had to accept the fact that I had a different style of learning. I had learning disabilities with my comprehension, and I work at a slower past, I battled with anxiety which has its up’s and down’s. I got frustrated with myself and wanted to give up in high school. It had made it also hard because I got bullied for being in special ED classes. I had low self-esteem, but with the support I had with special Ed and my Mother I graduated because I started to believe in myself , and found my motivation to keep going I also learned how to work with my disabilities and became comfortable. I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder, which had made my freshman year very difficult because I did not have a personal advocate and individual instructions. I also was not used to having such a large amount students in a classroom. I was trying to adapt to being a college student/ setting by speaking up to get the resources I needed to have a successful semester/ year. Likewise, I was not on medication for my anxiety disorder, nor was I seeking help. For instance, I did not see a therapist or do daily actives like yoga to help balance my anxiety. However, when I did repeat math88 with PDSS support and the math tutoring center I passed it. Spring 2013, I was dealing with personal family problems that were very serious at the time. My mother is on Social security lives on a very limited income. I help my mother with the day to day cost of household contribute regularly from what I earn by working two jobs at Ross and wings. My mother and I struggle financially with bills trying to make it each month. If I got grated my financial aid back it would help me out and my mother as well. My mother and I also attend to my grandparents since they are both suffering from chronic illness such as cancer, leukemia, congested heart failure. I was assaulted in May by a group of girls which I had suffered a concussion plus depression. As a Result, the assault made me feel fear of my safety and surroundings which had put me in deep depression to get back to myself by being comfortable around people and strangers. With that being said I had a roller coaster of hardship problems situations I had to face. I am now doing very well in my classes I attend at Grossmont and I am taking action by having daily actives to balances my anxiety disorder and taking vitamins for them which helps a lot. I wanted to go with the healthier route of helping my anxiety disorder. I also working one job which is Wings & things which helps for me to be able to focus on school more. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Alexis Walker-Jackson…...

Setting Tuition and Financial Aid

...Setting Tuition and Financial Aid Managerial Economics 09/15/2013 The idea behind “applicants had apparently concluded that if the college cost more, it must be better” (Brickley, Smith, & Zimmerman, 2009) is still a premise that society perceived as accurate but the financial problem behind this idea is if students are not receiving the help needed with a financial aid increase, it feels that this idea will not hold up very much longer. Susan’s analysis that the increase in tuition fee is likely to increase in the student enrollment and therefore would be helpful in solving the school’s financial problem is absolutely incorrect. Financial aid is an important factor when students are thinking about applying for a college. College education is getting more expensive every year and if they cannot afford to attend, they will most likely not apply, therefore the College need to think about the implications of this action. “Higher education, like any business, must listen to the “voice of the customer” in pricing deliberations” (Kurz & Scannell 2005). Susan is using the law of demand, which rising the price would work however she needs to take other factors into consideration. Education being a normal good cannot have an upward sloping demand curve and therefore Susan’s assessment that demand is upward sloping and hence tuition fee has to be increased is misleading. The fact that other colleges have seen increase in enrollment with increase in tuition fee is not......

Aids

...Aids a Communicable Disease Aids a Communicable Disease Communicable disease is an illness due to a specific infectious agent or its toxic products that arises through transmission of that agent or its products from an infected person, animal or inanimate reservoir to a susceptible host; either directly or indirectly through an intermediate plant or animal host, vector or the inanimate environment (UCLA, 2011). Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a communicable disease that has become a global epidemic. This paper will give the reader a description of the disease, demographic of interest, describe the determinants of health, the epidemiologic triangle as it relates to AIDS. This paper will also discuss the role of community health nurse and organizations that have made an impact on AIDS education and research. The first report of AIDS in medical literature was in 1981 at this time AIDS was known as a disease associated with being gay, this quickly changed when further research revealed a transfusion recipient had been diagnosed as well as an infant in 1982 (UCSF, 2003). The cause of AIDS comes from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which destroys CD4 cells this weakens the bodies immune system, a patient could have HIV for many years before it progresses to AIDS. A person is considered to be infected with AIDS when their CD4 count falls below 200 or they show any of the following symptoms: * Tuberculosis * Cryptosporidiosis * Pneumocystis......

Setting Tuition and Financial Aid

...Case Assignment Chapter 4 8/31/2014 MBA-540 Chapter 4: Setting Tuition and Financial Aid 1. Evaluate Susan’s analysis and recommendation. At first sight it is easy to see why Susan would believe that the demand for applying to a college increases when the cost of tuition is increased, based off the statistics seen at colleges such as Ursinus College and Wesleyan College. Ursinus increased the cost of tuition and the demand increased. Wesleyan did the opposite and decreased there tuition and the demand decreased. Susan’s belief in an upward slope, where the quanitity demanded increased with price, is seen as a Giffen good. Giffen good is when “a good for which a demand increases as the price increases and falls when the price decreases” (Investopedia, 2014). This contradicts the law of demand. As discussed in the text the law of demand refers to the demand curve sloping downwards because individuals buy less of a good and not more when the price increases (Brickley, Smith & Zimmerman, 2009). Giffen good is very rare to the point where there is actual debate about their existence, because the good in question must be considered an inferior good and there must be a lack of close substitutes (Investopedia, 2014). It would be irresponsible as a consultant to make a decision based on just Susan’s theory, especially when there could be other factors that not being considered for the affects of this demand increase over the increase in tuition. It is......

Price Discrimination and Smuggling of AIDS Drugs∗ Richard A. Hornbeck Abstract Patent-holding pharmaceutical companies are shown to be imperfectly able to charge differential prices for AIDS drugs due to the potential for black market exchange. Thus, greater segmentation in the international market through additional barriers to smuggling would induce firms to charge lower prices for AIDS drugs in poorer countries. Without these additional barriers, widespread drug distribution through mandated lower prices or weakened patent protection in the developing world would result in smuggling, undercutting demand in developed markets and reducing firms’ research incentives. By contrast, further market segmentation would allow policy makers to go beyond the induced price cuts and......

Analyzing Managerial Decisions: Setting Tuition and Financial Aid

...Alison Holt Managerial Economics MBA 540 Chapter 4 Case Analyzing Managerial Decisions: Setting Tuition and Financial Aid In 2000, Ursinus College raised its tuition 17.6 and fees percent to $23,460. After the fee increase, the college recognized an increase in applications by 200 compared to the previous year. There was an assumption by the college president that the applicants concluded the college must be better since its cost was more than others were. In addition, colleges such as the University of Notre Dame, Bryn Mawr College, Rice University, and the University of Richmond raised their tuition in order to match rival colleges, thus causing an increase in applications also. On the other hand, North Carolina Wesleyan College lowered their tuition and fees ten years ago by 22 percent; however, the decrease in costs only attracted a small number of candidates, thus determining the reduction in tuition and fees was not attractive to the students. Susan Hansen, Admissions Director, at a liberal arts college in the East gave a recommendation to increase tuition and reduce financial aid to students in order to increase enrollment. Susan projects the increase in tuition and the decrease in financial aid will solve the school’s financial problems. Last year, the college enrolled 400 new students who each paid an effective tuition of $15,000 (after financial aid) totaling $6,000,000. Susan projects the increased demand from charging an effective tuition of $25,000; the college...

AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death among persons between ages 25 and 44 in the United States, down from number one in 1995. To some people, AIDS is just another epidemic like the common cold and it will go away in time. The AIDS epidemic doesn’t affect everyone in society the same. AIDS is a global epidemic and has threatened the human health and development for many years. There are many ways to prevent the spread of AIDS such as abstinence, educating our youths and adults on AIDS prevention, and political support to find a cure. There are different views on the AIDS problem. One view is the Politicians who believe that people are responsible for their own sexuality; therefore, it’s their responsibility to educate themselves. Second are Christians who believe that religion acts as a deterrent to sexual activity which decreased pre-marital sex. Third are the group of Planned Parenthood and safe sex which believes that if they educate people on the use of contraceptives, it will help diminish pregnancy and the spread of AIDS. Is Financial Education Needed?

...It is an obvious fact that financial aspects are a major part of daily life, as an adult and even as a young individual. Each and every one of us has to make financial decisions concerning recreation, health, education and more. The question is whether to start with financial education as part of school program or postpone it for a later stage in life. To being with, being able to understand the value of money, the way the economic system works and interpret financial news and its implications is a virtue. Without this virtue, an individual, and even a young one, might suffer, to some extent. For an example, a child who doesn’t understand the concept of money might find it more difficult to except choosing only one present out of more possible ones. In addition, many adults are lacking financial analysis capabilities. Quite often, the reason can be a shaky basis or insecurity when it comes to financial terms and concepts. Starting from an early age, building a strong background, can very likely prevent such a situation. However, financial education necessarily involves quantifying and setting prices and value for services and goods. It can be easily turn young people into cynical and cold-hearted human beings. Furthermore, a tendency to self-concentration and egoism might rise when one start measuring everything from a profit making perspective. In conclusion, financial education has both pros and cons.
