A person’s first week at college is one of the most significant transition periods in their life. It is ultimately one of the most surprising, frightening, and enjoyable experiences they will have. My first week at NDSU was no exception to this. There were things about my first week that I was completely not expecting, things that didn’t surprise me at all, and things that have been very rewarding. First, multiple things about my first week of college surprised me. One of these things was that the days don’t go by nearly as slowly as I thought they would. In high school, I was at school from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on any given day, and no matter what, the time seemed to go unbearably slow. I thought that I would be experiencing the same feeling of the day dragging on in college. Because I don’t live on campus, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have a 5 p.m. class, on those days I am typically on campus from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. I didn’t think I would be able to handle long school hours again, especially hours even longer than I was at high school. However, there are so many ways to stay busy at NDSU that the hours practically fly by in a comparison to high school. The seemingly shorter school days are just one of the things that surprise me about NDSU. Second, there were several things about college that met my expectations exactly. For example, going into college I figured that there was going to be a very large amount of homework in comparison to high school. I was definitely correct about this. In high school, it wasn’t too difficult to get by with minimal effort and attention paid in class. However, my first week at NDSU showed me that college indeed does require much effort and actually doing the reading from the textbook that you are assigned. I don’t have a problem with doing my homework, it is just something that I have observed and expected before I started college. There are many things about college that were not at all surprising to me, but the amount of homework is the one out that stands out to me the most. Finally, my first week of college has already been very rewarding for a few reasons. One reason for this is the people that I have met. Only after one week, I have made many new friends in various ways. Not only have I met people from different states and schools, but I have also become closer friends with my some of my close friends from high school, as well as became friends with people from my high school that I have never talked to before. Other things about my first week of college have been gratifying, but my friends and the people I have met are what I value the most. Just like any other student, my first week at NDSU has had moments that were shocking to me, others that I expected to happen coming into college, and things that have been rewarding to me. I was very surprised that the days didn’t seem as long as I expected them too, I wasn’t at all surprised by the amount of homework that I have been given so far, and I have found the people that I have met, among other things, have made my first week of college very rewarding. Overall, as someone who was very scared of starting their first week of college, my first week of school has taught me that college is actually not a scary experience, and although it may have it’s frightening moments, there will ultimately be even more enjoyable and gratifying experiences to make up for it.…...

Week 4 Team Reflection

...Week 4 Team Reflection Dana Sweet, Daniel Marquez, Diana Bak, Donna Eastwood, and Kimberly Dillman July 28, 2013 ECO/372 Kevin Mc Kinley Week 4 Team Reflection Already we are into week four of our class in macroeconomics. This week held some insights for us all. We learned about assets, deficits, surplus, and debts. We also learned about fiscal policy and the problems involved with it. We all enjoyed the discussion questions. Everyone had their own beliefs about the system and how to change the OPEC oligopoly. It was all very interesting. Kimberly states in week four the material covers deficits, surplus, debt, and assets. First the material defines deficits and surplus that was easy to comprehend and extremely enlightening. As a former college student majoring in business the terms should be comprehendible but was surprising to learn the true meaning of both deficits and surplus. Deficits and surplus are both dealing with money, first the chapter 17 defines deficits as a shortfall in revenues under payments, explaining that surplus was the opposite, and this was easily understood. After further detail about deficits and surplus the chapter later introduces the definition of debt and assets is common knowledge. The material goes on to explain the difference between individual and government debt. The material concludes the chapter by explaining the burden of the US government deficits or debt. Kimberly also believed that in......

Ethics Reflection First Solar

...Role of Ethics in the Workplace Xxxxxxxxxx STR/581 12/10/2012 Abstract The individual assignment this week was titled Ethics Reflection Paper. The focus of the paper was the role of ethics in the workplace as well as awareness of personal views regarding ethical behavior. Students were given the opportunity to participate in the Williams Institute: Ethics Awareness Inventory and the Williams Institute: Ethical Choices in the Workplace and discuss my results. This information was reflected in the paper. Furthermore, the focus was the importance of ethics in Strategy Management and the values of First Solar, Inc. The Role of Ethics in the Workplace Individual ethical standards reflect the importance of character, results, and equity and the ineffectiveness of obligation and rules. The individual rating was above the mean. Character, results, and equity are an integral component to ethical behavior in the workplace. Conversely, the personal rating is below the mean in regard to obligation. Ethical behavior is not a requirement. Obligation implies coercion to comply due to cultural norms and standards. Morality is an option. In order for a firm to ensure that ethical behavior is practiced by employees, the strategy plan must delineate the importance of individual decisions in ethical behavior. “A focus on the rules alone can cause a person to lose sight of the role ethical principles play when individuals are faced with ethical decisions”......

Reflection on First Year at University

...12/05/13 Reflection on my first year at University Gibbs reflective model (1988) will be used. And I will discuss my first year in University. And the opportunities that I have been given in order to enhanced my skills, abilities, awareness and understanding of my role Reflection Semester I started this course as a student As my first semester is coming to an end, This way of learning is completely different to anything I have done before. As a high school student over thirty five years ago, I learnt everything parrot fashion and was assessed by examination only - I lost interest very quickly. So to experience this different way of learning will encourage me to be more creative in my work, my confidence is improving and I am pleased with my performance in my first year though I did feel particularly anxious, stretched and challenged.  I have gained knowledge on essay writing, referencing and a variety of research methods which have all been helpful. I see these skills as the basic tools I will need to progress through my course and complete the foundation degree and hopefully, these will be transferable Productive and rewarding. My first year has made me become more positive when accepting ideas from others. I learnt it is okay to say if you do not think somebody’s suggestion will work but in doing so I need to give my reasons and suggest an alternative. My studying and my work based learning has helped me greatly with communication, problem solving and critical......

First Year of College

...So far my community college experience has been the pretty interesting. I have enjoyed the freedom, my coursework, and all the new friends I’ve made. When I first started college, I wasn’t excited at all. I just knew that the work wasn’t going to be as difficult as a university and I basically saw the whole idea as a joke. I see now that everything I thought about the school was just a simple minded. Not only is this the same environment as a university but they have the same type of activities as well. I have not a doubt in my mind that going to a junior college prior to attending a university will set me up for the utmost success. My first year at TCC was an eye opening experience of what college life was really going to be like. There was so much more freedom than in high school. When you have to use the restroom or make a phone call, permission is not needed, everything is on your time. When you miss a class, nobody is going to call your mother or give her an update on how your classes are going. As a matter of fact, I soon found out that your parents aren’t even allowed access to your grades unless granted permission by you. I believe this is right around the time I started loving college life. If you party all night and don’t feel like going to class the next day, you don’t have to, but it is still your responsibility to get your work. This has bought me to my next subject, responsibility. Unlike high school, teachers do not care if you pass or fail, they do not care......

Week Reflection

...to any companies. This statement will show users where is the money is coming from and where is going. This week focused on income specifically; when does a company report it. The criteria are realized when payment is received for services or products, but this in turn is where companies have had problems. That combined with the multitudes of business and we can see where issues arise when time comes to post. We also reviewed on what qualifies as an irregular posting. For some of us this was easier to wrap our brains around as the rules state; that if the posting is not in regular operations, then it can be considered irregular. Some of us can see how that can be a problem especially after a rare change such as accounting principal. We finally reviewed comprehensive income; what it includes and how it is reported. FASB rules are clear on how it should be reported in the form of a second income statement, to name an example. This week’s readings were easy for most of us and we look forward to the next challenge. This week reflection summary includes income statement and revenue recognition. We learned the elements of income statement and the items on the income statement. We also learned how to prepare single-step and multi-step income statement and which of the two steps is appropriate to use when preparing income statement. The other concept this week is the revenue recognition. Revenue recognition is very important concept in preparing income statement......

To express their outrage Rev. B. Elton Cox led 2,000 black college students on a march to protest the incarceration of the students. Rev. To what extent does the Constitution protect the right of privacy? “The U. S. Constitution contains no express right to privacy. The Bill of Rights, however, reflects the concern of James Madison and other framers for protecting specific aspects of privacy, such as the privacy of beliefs (1st Amendment), privacy of the home against demands that it be used to house soldiers (3rd Amendment), privacy of the person and possessions as against unreasonable searches (4th Amendment), and the 5th Amendment's privilege against self-incrimination, which provides protection for the privacy of personal information. In addition, the Ninth Amendment states that the "enumeration of certain rights" in the Bill of Rights "shall not be construed to deny or disparage other rights retained by the people." The meaning of the Ninth Amendment is elusive, but some persons have interpreted the Ninth Amendment as justification for broadly reading the Bill...

Reflections on the First Amendment

...Reflections on the First Amendment HIS/301 January 15, 2015 Paul Betancourt Reflections on the First Amendment The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States protects the freedom of the American people. When asked about the First Amendment, many people would only think of the freedom of speech. However, the amendment reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances (U.S. Constitution, amend. I). Over time, these rights have been challenged in various cases, six of which will be discussed in this paper. The common trend in these cases is that the First Amendment rights may always be tested, but in the end, they hold true in court. The freedom of speech and freedom of the press ensure that Congress cannot pass any laws or other amendments that would later take these rights away from the American people. The idea is that all people should be able to speak freely, and news agencies and reporters should be able to speak the truth, whatever it may be, to the citizens of America (Cornell University Law School, n.d.). However, there are times where saying certain things in certain scenarios could cause grave damage to the country, the U.S. government, or even the American people. In these cases, there have actually been exceptions......

First Week of School

...Reflection #1 Let me just start with saying that high school is completely different from college. I am looking forward to finishing my high school career at SCFCS and I am excited on what comes to this new adventure. I have learned a new couple tricks at the seminar which will be in use for all my subjects, I also have figured out how to do finish all my assignments on time, and last but not the least just some challenges I am trying to overcome. Last week on Thursday on the 3rd of September, a lady from the SCF library came in to talk to the class. I learned a couple things from her. I already knew coming in how citations are very critical in college but I did not know how to cite properly. The staff are experts when it comes to that, they are willing to help us cite properly. Another thing I found very helpful is that we already have $5 dollars in our account that we can use for free printing, I thought that was pretty nice of the school to do that. Mostly I was very intrigued about the Data Base on their website. It is very helpful for any kind of research papers, whether it is English, Science, or even History. The thing that is really cool about the database is that they are ALL reliable sources. I actually already used it a few days ago for my English paper and it definitely saved me a lot of time. Taking 6 subjects all at once equals tons of endless homework. I was pretty stressed out the first week of school because I kept thinking to myself that it is......

First Year Reflection

...As my first semester at Babson College is coming to an end, I’m in complete disbelief. To think that I travelled 8,122 miles, 3 months and 11 days to get to this point in my life is mind-boggling. It seems like it was only yesterday that I was standing at Park Manor South, waving to my family and shedding some tears. At that moment, I had begun a new journey, a new chapter, a new family, and a new home. During my first semester at Babson, I faced a few challenges. First off, there was an undertone of a culture shock throughout these four months. I could not keep up with the topics my peers were talking about, or did not know certain ‘slang’ words they used, making it hard for me to be involved in a conversation! But now, I embrace my diversity rather than feeling out of place at times. I cherish my culture and display it out in the open because my roots make up who I am, here at Babson. Another challenge I faced was the weather! I come from a very warm city in India, and facing below-freezing temperatures definitely is not my cup of tea. I am used to it now though and am looking forward to Boston’s first snow fall! Another challenge I have faced at Babson is homesickness. I have never been away from my family for more than six weeks! Day by day, Babson has started to morph into exactly what I miss so much – home. I came into college with a mindset that everything is going to be nerve-wracking, scary and overwhelming. While all of this is true, a sense of familiarity is......

Epistemological Reflection in the First Year Experience Course

...Epistemological Reflection in the First Year Experience Course Program Charge The Student Development Division staff subcommittee of ABC Community College has been tasked to present to the Dean of Student Affairs a theory based program to foster student development. The subcommittee proposes a revision to the first year experience course curriculum which will integrate outcomes based on Baxter Magolda’s Model of Epistemological Reflection. Proposed Program Goal and Context Overall, this program is designed to “validate students as knowers, situate learning in the students’ experiences, encourage the processes of jointly constructed knowledge, and facilitate learning relationships that empower students” (Bock, 1999, p. 39).  More specifically, the First Year Experience Curriculum Revision will challenge first-year community college students’ assumptions about the nature, limits, and certainty of knowledge (Evans et al., 2010, p. 125). Target Demographic The traditional and nontraditional community college students enrolled in a first year experience course are the target demographic for this program. While the average age of the community college student is twenty nine years old, the students enrolled in the first year experience course will range from new high school graduates to working adults.   Program Description The proposed student development initiative will be carried out through curriculum revision of a First Year Experience Course.  This course......
