Forward Style, Inc. Employee Policy Memo
The purpose of this paper is to create and devise a memo for Forward Style, Inc.’s management. The company offers benefits, such as Private Retirement Plan, Medical insurance, Disability insurance, Social insurance, including Social Security, Unemployment insurance, Worker’s Compensation, Pay for time not worked, Stock options, Child Care, and Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) of 6 paid weeks and up to 6 additional unpaid weeks. After reviewing and evaluating the company’s incentives and benefits program, I will determine if legal requirements are being met by the company. I will accurately identify and explain which benefits are legally required and which benefits are being used to attract employees. Additionally I will explain how the offered benefits impact the organization.
Employee benefits are important to most employees. Therefore, benefits an employer offer can be a deciding factor for a potential employee in deciding whether or not to work for that company. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are two types of employee benefits, such as benefits employers are required by law to provide and benefits that are optional for an employer to offer and or provide. Examples of required benefits include unemployment insurance, workers' compensation, and social security, whereas optional benefits include health stock options, child care, retirement benefits, and health care insurance coverage (The U.S. Small Business Administration, n.d.).

Debt Policy at Ust Inc.

...Case 1 – Debt Policy at UST Inc. 1) UST is the dominant producer of moist smokeless tobacco, or moist snuff, controlling approximately 77% of the market. UST has been one of the most profitable companies in corporate America with low debt compared to other companies in the tobacco industry and the company has been recognized by Forbes in terms of profitability by achieving return of capital of 92.1%. Price elasticity of its products is also important while evaluating. Smokeless tobacco industry has a relatively steep demand curve and should be considered as having an inelastic consumer demand. UST has products outside of its core operations in the wine and premium cigar market also. The company built itself strong brand name recognition over the years by providing premium products. Tobacco industry does not allow new competitors to enter the market due to strict legal regulations and advertisement bans. So, we can think that UST will hold its position in the market in the long run. Although for the past couple of years, UST faced market share erosion due to price-value brands which offer low priced products. UST have been criticized for lacking innovation and new product offering. The company also has lack of international (geographical) diversity. Also, there is a chance of a cultural shift against tobacco, and UST is unlikely to expand to international market We can say that; UST is in a good position in terms of brand name and market position, capability to......

Dividend Policy at Fpl Group Inc.

...Baocheng Wei Jieqing Jin Ruixue Xu Shu Li Yifan Wu Class Session: MWF 1:50-2:45 PM Case 1: Dividend Policy at FPL Group Inc. Because of FPL’s reluctance to increase its dividends and increased competition in the electric utility industry, Merrill Lynch’s utility analyst downgraded FPL Group Inc. Kate Stark, utility analyst at First Securities Corporation, wondered whether she should issue an updated report about stocks of FPL. We investigated the potential risks faced by FPL and its payout policies, and according to the results, we recommend the shareholders to hold FPL’s stocks. Based on our analysis, there are several important issues confronting the FPL Group in May 1994. The first one is the potential competitors and losses resulting from retail wheeling. Although Florida does not consider a retail wheeling proposal now, retail wheeling is still a threat because of the general trend of the industry. FPL needs to ensure that it has the ability to compete with other companies both in and out of state. Also, negotiations between FPL and Florida Municipal Power Agency are still continuing. Florida Municipal Power Agency accused FPL of violating the NEPA of 1992 by charging excessive rates and denying access to its utility transmission system. FPL is also concerned with the increased long-term interest rates which will result in a larger interest expense accompanied by underperformance. Due to the relatively high levels of debt, FPL could not pass all interest increases to......

Policy Implication and the Way Forward

...Asian J Gerontol Geriatr 2012; 7: 59–63 Policy implication and the way forward WM Chan FHKAM(Community Medicine) Elderly Health Service, Department of Health, Hong Kong SPECIAL ARTICLE Correspondence to: Dr Wai Man Chan, Elderly Health Service, Department of Health, Hong Kong. E-mail: w_m_chan@dh.gov.hk ABSTRACT Care for the elderly was one of the 3 main policy objectives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 1997. Many policy initiatives have been introduced in terms of financial support, better housing, and long-term care services. For active ageing, an innovative project known as the ‘Elder Academy’ aimed at promoting intergenerational cohesion, which is now under threat owing to changing social patterns. With the rapid increase in the number of ‘old-olds’, more resources on dementia care, community support, professional staff development, carer training, and coordination of care are necessary. In terms of financing, shared responsibility is the only viable option. In the 2012-13 budget speech, a pilot for community care service voucher as a means of promoting ageing at home was announced. As the coming cohorts of elders are more affluent and knowledgeable, they tend to be healthier and have different demands and expectations, such as independent living with better quality of life. The private sector may explore the markets of community care services and elder-oriented products. To meet the emerging needs, a holistic approach should be adopted,......

Debt Policy at Ust Inc.

...Harvard Business School 9-200-069 Rev. May 3, 2001 Debt Policy at UST Inc. In December 1998, UST Inc.’s board of directors approved a plan to borrow up to $1 billion over five years to accelerate its stock buyback program.1 For UST Inc., the leading producer of moist smokeless tobacco products and a company widely known for its conservative debt policy and high dividend payout (uninterrupted cash dividends since 1912), this announcement generated considerable attention on Wall Street. Investors eagerly awaited the subsequent actions of Vincent Gierer, Jr., UST’s Chairman and CEO. In 1997, UST had suspended its stock repurchase program, approved in 1996, because of legislative and legal issues confronting the tobacco industry.2 In November 1998, the company signed the Smokeless Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement resolving its potential state Medicaid liability and reinstated its repurchase program.3 Management believed that this agreement represented significant progress with respect to the legal and legislative matters confronting the company, permitting UST to proceed with its business strategy and potential recapitalization. The Smokeless Tobacco Market The U.S. smokeless tobacco industry generated $2 billion of retail revenue in 1998 with approximately 5 million consumers of moist smokeless tobacco and 7 million consumers of chewing tobacco including loose leaf, twist, plug and dry. Moist smokeless tobacco consumption approximated 50% of the......

When an Employee Violated a Policy or Procedure

...MAN2021_Work3.doc Everest University When an employee violated a policy or procedure, under Florida law your employer can fire you with no verbal warning. My first job as a bagger at Publix, I was asked to be the custodian for the shift I was working. I was still in high school, so I refuse to do it. Legally my manager can fire me, give a warning or suspend me for many days. He choose suspended me after he sat me down explained to me why he wants all his baggers in the store to rotate and be the custodian one day of the week. I learn a lot from that, my manager didn’t have to give a verbal warning or suspend me. He could have legally fired me and I would have to start from scratch to look for another job.  One example I can remember has an office manager, I would always double check payroll before printing the check. The office accounting put together with some of the employees to alter the amount they suppose to pay on federal tax. As the office manager I had to explain to them how unethical and how extremely illegal what they are doing was. I always believe as the manager it was my social responsibility to make sure that my employees have minimum financial issues as possible. One of my employees had her car broke down on her and she could not come to work and come to work late when she find a ride. I went to my branch manager plea for $2500 advance pay for her so can use it as down payment for a newer car. A manager who is socially responded will have a positive......

Policy Memo Palestinian Israel Conflict

...Policy Memo Date: May 27, 2012 RE: Israel/Palestine-A Two State Solution . Foreign policy has always been an important plank in American policy. The way in which we deal with foreign policy not only affects the American economy, but also American security. One ongoing foreign policy topic of significant importance is “promoting peace and security in Israel and the Middle East.” A problem exists with security and peace in Israel and the Middle East and the area has had a high degree of violence since the creation of the Israeli state in 1948. The initial United Nations partition plan in 1947 aimed at the creation of two separate states; this however never occurred with Israel gaining more territory from the surrounding areas in the decades following. American involvement in the area has changed over time from that of ardent supporter of Israel to that of broker of peaceful negotiations among Israel and neighboring countries, and Israel and the Palestinian community. For the United States and the global community at large, stability and peace in the Middle East is an important issue. The only viable solution is the creation of two separate states, allowing the Palestinian Authority to have autonomy over a Palestinian state in the occupied areas of the Gaza Strip and West Bank. These two areas were seized by Israel after the Six Day War of 1967, along with the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem, and the Sinai Peninsula. Immediately following, Jewish settlements......
