GERO 380: Diversity in Aging
Prof. Brown, Bates, & Dr. Shannon
Writing Assignment #1

McFarland, CA is a small farming community located about 2 hours north of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Through my experiences living in this town, I have witnessed first hand what it means to age in a place where diversity takes an entirely new meaning. McFarland is considered a small-sized town by state standards, and because of its lack of diversity the city has taken a pause in terms of its progression as a society. I often find myself hesitating to respond when I am asked about the name of my hometown. Too often, I am quick to state that I am from Bakersfield, which in retrospect is one of the fastest growing cities in California. The reason to my promiscuity lies in the fact that all residents of McFarland lack a few essential resources that appear as commodities in bigger and more established cities, like Bakersfield. There aren’t any skate parks, shopping plazas, or enough after-school programs to keep the youth occupied. This is an issue when we consider how our juvenile decisions affect the way we age. It is in my greatest understanding that the progression of the McFarland community is hindered due to two sociological factors like a large skew in ethnic diversity and by an inefficient low wage-paying agricultural industry.
With a population of 12,420, this statistic accounts for three large ethnic groups that make up more than a majority of the size. Of the three, the Hispanic population amounts to 91.9%, only to be followed by 5.6% Caucasian, and 1.9% Black. The reason as to why the ethnic groups are heavily skewed toward the Hispanic population is because McFarland is one of most prominent farming communities in the state of California. This can be supported by the gender statistics, which state that the male to female ratio is…...

She also has a history of not complying with health professionals and she has failed to take her prescription medications as directed.

...understanding things lately and she seemed agitated more than often. On January 23, 2016 Tania got her annual health checkup. Her physical exam at first all came back fine. Tania’s daughter had to explain that her mother could not create new memories, was having difficult time thinking and understand and seemed very agitated. The doctor brushed it off and said she was just probably going through somethings in her life. It was not until Tania told the doctor that almost a year ago she had a funny spasms resulting in the doctor giving her another physical exam, which involved a full mental exam, laboratory and imaging test. He knew for certain that she had dementia but just not which type. The doctor then referred her to a neurologist and a gero-psychologist. One week later after seeing both specialists, Tania received two calls and received the news that she had vascular dementia. Tania was taken to a nursing home, after repeatedly giving problems to both her daughter and home health aide. Healthcare Delivery Team The same way it takes a village and plenty of help to raise a child; it takes the same dedication and time of physicians and health care workers to help a patient with vascular dementia. Having such a team helps the patient manage their symptoms and gives them and their families less stress. For better results and managing patients in an orderly and safe manner any and all health care facilities should have a variety of professionals from different specialties who......

The Change in János Kádárs Dictatorship

...the Communist Hungarian Party, which can be mainly attributed to his acquaintance with Mátyás Rákosi.[6] As during World War II, Horthy’s regime was governing the country and communist ideologies were clandestine. Therefore, the Communist Hungarian Party changed its illegal name to Peace Party, maintaining the same aims with Kádár as the Chief Secretary.[7] Now as Kádár was legally a party leader, he became more and more influential; therefore, he became disturbing in the eyes of the actual regime and Kádár was arrested at the first opportunity by the German troops while he was travelling to Yugoslavia.[8] Meanwhile, the group of leaders living in exile, such as Mátyás Rákosi, Ernő Gerő and Imre Nagy came back from Moscow and established the Hungarian Communists Party. Kádár was replaced by Ernő Gerő and by that became deputy of the Chief Captain of Budapest Police Department.[9] By applying the methods, he learned and experienced during the imprisonments, he quickly went up the ladder and after a few months became a member of Rákosi’s Politburo.[10] In addition, in 1948, he was proclaimed the Minister of Interior, by which his influence and popularity among the citizens grew.[11] In Hungary during these tense years after World War II, the leaders who became too influential and seemed too dangerous to the regime and especially to Rákosi, were liquidated. This can be observed in Kádár’s career too, especially in 1951 when he was arrested, deprived from his ranks, and sentenced......
