Discussion Question
Chapter 7
Process Flow Analysis

1. Provide the definition of a bottleneck. Why is it important to find the bottleneck?

A bottleneck is a phenomenon where the performance or capacity of an entire system is limited by a single or limited number of components or resources. The term bottleneck is taken from the 'assets are water' metaphor. As water is poured out of a bottle, the rate of outflow is limited by the width of the conduit of exit, that is, bottleneck. By increasing the width of the bottleneck one can increase the rate at which the water flows out of the neck at different frequencies. Such limiting components of a system are sometimes referred to as bottleneck points.

2. Explain the difference between capacity, flow rate, and demand.

Capacity: The capacity can be calculated for every station in a business process. It is always m / processing time with m being the number of resources being devoted to the station. If, for example, one worker needs 40 seconds to put together a sandwich, the capacity of this station is 1/40 per second or 1,5 sandwiches per minute. If there are two workers on the same station, the capacity increases to 2/40 per second or 3 sandwiches per minute.

Flow rate: the definition needs to be augmented as the flow rate being the minimum of demand and process capacity. While the flow rate logically can never be higher than the capacity of the bottleneck, it can very well be lower, if the demand is insufficient.

Demand: principle that describes a consumer's desire, willingness and ability to pay a price for a specific good or service. Demand refers to how much (quantity) of a product or service is desired by buyers. The quantity demanded is the amount of a product people are willing to buy at a certain price; the relationship between price and quantity demanded is known as the demand relationship.

3. What is the best approach, radical improvement or continuous improvement of processes? Under what circumstances might either approach be preferred?

Continuous improvement: is an ongoing effort to improve products, services or processes. These efforts can seek “incremental” improvement over time or “breakthrough” improvement all at once.

Among the most widely used tools for continuous improvement is a four-step quality model—the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle, also known as Deming Cycle or Shewhart Cycle:

Plan: Identify an opportunity and plan for change.
Do: Implement the change on a small scale.
Check: Use data to analyze the results of the change and determine whether it made a difference.
Act: If the change was successful, implement it on a wider scale and continuously assess your results. If the change did not work, begin the cycle again.
Other widely used methods of continuous improvement — such as Six Sigma, Lean, and Total Quality Management — emphasize employee involvement and teamwork; measuring and systematizing processes; and reducing variation, defects and cycle times.

Radical Improvement: A method of reducing a process that may usually take months to happen, to make it happen in a much shorter period of time. An acceleration process that is sued in times of lean production.

4. Describes services blue printing.

Guess Who Movie Analytic Text

...Guess Who Racial Relations Guess Who is an American romantic comedy film about race relations and gender. The 2005 motion picture covers interracial romance of an African-American woman with a white, Caucasian man in a light and farcical manner. It is a loose remake of the 1967 serious and dramatic fashion film, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Race and ethnic relations are the social, political, and economic relations between races and ethnicities at all levels of society. This area encompasses racism, segregation, and other complex social processes between different racial and ethnic groups. The movie poster precisely portrays the idea and concept of the film. The door being guarded by the African American serious father, the bouquet of colorful flowers held by the white, Caucasian boyfriend, and the in love African-American daughter standing behind her boyfriend reflects one the most important details that illuminate in the movie poster. The daughter of the house brings her white, Caucasian boyfriend home to meet her parents on the occasion of her parents’ 25th wedding anniversary. Her father dislikes him almost immediately because of his race. The movie poster reflects how he is guarding and controlling the door of the house symbolizing how he doesn’t want his daughter’s boyfriend to enter and become part of the family nor part of his daughter’s life because he belongs to a different race. It seems that he believes that if the white, Caucasian man enters the house, he......

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Now!

...Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Now! Anthony Raphael Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Values and Ethics HUMN 330 Amanda Schooling May 01, 2013 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Now! Spanish philosopher, George Santayana quoted the phrase, “Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it” (Britannica, 2013, p. 1). Never has that phrase meant as much as it does today in the battle for marriage equality. The norm of a given society usually defines acceptable marriage. When the need arises to change that norm, it takes an opinion-changing event to effect the views of society. In early 1967, the Supreme Court ruled in a landmark decision clearing the way for interracial marriage (Loving v. Virginia, 1967). As ground breaking as that decision was, it did very little to diminish the opinions of people who were strongly against interracial marriage. In an era where the struggle for civil rights was an ongoing occurrence, not only did the law against interracial marriage need to be changed, but also the way society viewed it. In an effort to shed light on the underlying whispers of secret societal snubbing of mixed marriages, the movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Columbia Pictures Corporation, 1967) was able to give our nation an opportunity to open a dialog. Today, we find a nation that is on the verge of repeating a similar course of action in the struggle for marriage equality. For the past few years, the fear, prejudice, and hostility against......

Guess That Card

...Guess Your Card Steven Colson Prof. Latriece Tanksley MAT-104 August 6, 2013 The name of this guessing game is Guess Your Card. The purpose of this project is to employ various logical methods to figure out which cards each player possesses. The game is completed and won by the first player to correctly state what card he or she has. In this particular game setup there are 4 players, Andy, Belle, Carol and Myself. Each player picks 3 cards without looking at them, cards ranging from 1 thru 9. Andy has the cards 1, 5, and 7. Belle has the cards 5, 4, and 7. Carol has the cards 2, 4, and 6. As of right know I do not know what numbers I have in my possession. Andy draws the question card, “Do you see two (2) or more players whose cards sum to the same value?” He answers, “Yes.” Next Belle draws the question card, “Of the five (5) odd numbers, how many different odd numbers do you see?” She answers, “All of them.” Andy suddenly speaks up. "I know what I have," he says. "I have a 1, a 5, and a 7." To figure out what numbers I have in my possession, I will use the process of elimination. I know the numbers of the other players, and information given by the other players I can solve the answer of what are my card numbers. To first solve this problem, I remember that Andy said that he saw two (2) or more players whose cards sum to the same value. So knowing this I know that 2 of the players’ numbers will add up to the same sum. So I add both Belle and Carol card numbers......

Guess Your Card

...Logic Application: Guess Your Card Jeffrey Self Professor Mune Lokesh Math 104 Algebra With Applications 19 June 2013 In my scenario I am sitting around the kitchen table with three friends and we decide to play the game Guess Your Card. My friends explain to me that in this game each of us in turn will blindly draw three cards from a partial deck of cards. This deck has had all cards above 9 removed, and for this game’s purposes aces are only equal to 1. Without looking at my cards I am to place them facing out on my forehead so the other players can clearly see the cards. Each of the other players is to do the same. The object of the game is to guess which cards you have on your own head using logic to solve the problem. Players draw question cards that reveal information about player cards, and the first to guess their cards based on the information revealed wins the game. My brother Andy has the cards 1, 5, and 7 showing on his forehead. His wife Belle has 5, 4, and 7. My girlfriend Carol has the cards 2, 4, and 6. Andy is selected to draw the first question card, and it asks if he sees two or more players who’s cards sum to the same value. Andy answers affirmatively. With this information I know that I must have cards that equal either 12 or 16. I know this because Belle’s cards sum to 16 and Carol’s cards sum to 12. Since Andy sees two of us with cars of the same value I am able to confirm that my sum must match either Belle’s or Carol’s. At this point none of us...

Guess Your Card

...Algebra with Applications 104 | Assignment 1: Logic Application- Guess Your Card | | 10/31/2013 | Guess Your Card is when each player draws three cards without looking. Each card has a number between 1 and 9 on it. The players then place their cards on their heads so that everyone but that person can see their own cards; the purpose is so that you can guess which card you have | I am playing Guess Your Card with three (3) other players. Andy has the cards 1, 5, and 7; Belle has the cards 5, 4, and 7; Carol has the cards 2, 4, and 6. Andy draws answers yes to the question card, “Do you see two (2) or more players whose cards sum to the same value?” Next Belle draws the question card, “Of the five (5) odd numbers, how many different odd numbers do you see?” She answers, “All of them.” Andy suddenly speaks up. "I know what I have," he says. "I have a 1, a 5, and a 7." Andy draws the question card, “Do you see two or more players whose cards sum to the same value?” He answers, “`yes.” The sum of Belle's cards 5+4+7 = 16 sum of Carol's cards = 2+4+6 = 12 I found that there are 2 different sums but Andy sees at least two players whose cards have the same sum, which means my cards either adds up to 12 or 16 . If the only odd cards Belle sees are 1, 5, 7 from Andy then I must have a 3 and a 9 which equals 12. My sum either is 12 or 16 and since 3 + 9 = 12, and smallest card is 1, then my cards must add up to 16. We know now that my cards must equal 16 and that I......

Who Can and Who Can't

...Who Can… Who Can’t The main focus of the article is about other races using “the n-word”. The author talks about how African Americans are allowed to use the word with no problem, and how Puerto Ricans are accepted to use the word, but when a white person says it then it is completely out of line. The author other also states how the rap industry accepts the use of the word but, once again if a white person uses it, then they are considered “fake” The author asks multiple rappers in Chicago, why is it such a big deal when someone of a different race uses “the n-word” and what does it mean to them. Black rappers feel that it is disrespectful for white rappers to use the word because they feel that when White people say it, they say as if they are dominant. “ If some Spanish dude is like ‘nigga this’ ‘nigga that’ I don’t think he’s thinking ‘ You a nigga, and I’m a higher species,’ Whereas you hear that shit out of a white dude’s mouth, it goes right back to where it came from,” (Harkness, 136) Based off this statement, black people feel that white people can’t say the word because they created it, and it just brings to back to slavery days. “ They trapped, they grinding, they hard. Plus, they weren’t the people that enslaved us… The Caucasian folks enslaved us. So when they say the word nigger, or course it would offend us. “ Latino’s, in a black person’s mind has been through the same struggle as them. Therefore they are allowed to use the word. Hollister and Guess

...Hollister and Guess A. Location Factors Both of Hollister and Guess are located in Downtown Seattle. It is a community shopping center. B. Exterior Atmospherics It is not hard to find the parking there, but the parking is very expensive, about $10/hours. C. Interior Atmospherics An equally interesting fact about the two retailers is related to the store environment they offer. In general is a combination of many elements: music, temperature, odor, lighting, layout, decoration, even the sales associates they hire, and others, many of these elements influence shoppers’ behavior playing with their emotions, perceptions and physiological states. - Hollister is strongly targeting to teen-young adults (18-22 years old), who are trendy, good looking and with a lot of sex appealing. As soon as you enter the store a combination of stimulus attacks you, from the extremely loud music, the smell of their signature perfume all over the cloth, poor lighting, good looking sales associates and huge pictures of models all over the store, what are they trying to sell? Excitement, sex, fun, social spaces using lounge furniture, it’s all about being young, pretty and popular. For sure is not the most relaxing ambiance for parents, who most likely wait outside the store until the kids choose whatever they want to buy. But at the end of the day, it’s not about the parents; it’s about the teenagers having a place to be that person they are trying to be. - On the other hand, most of the......

The Who

...The Who Before enrolling in American Popular Music, I had decent background on a fair amount of bands and artists we have talked about in class, including, but not limited to, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, and The Eagles. These artists are some of my Dad’s favorite, so therefore I learned a lot about them from him; however, he has never been a fan of The Who. Therefore, I was rather excited when I was assigned a research paper on The Who; a band who I really knew nothing about before American Popular Music. In the following paper, I will provide details about The Who’s individual band members’ lives, as well as information in relation to the band in general. The Who had four main members: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. In addition to being the band’s guitarist, Pete Townshend took on the roll as the primary song writer. The most interesting fact I found about Townshend, is that he owns his own book publishing company. He actually published a book of his own called “Horse’s Neck” which consisted of a variety of short stories. Townshend has maintained a musical interest throughout his life, even after The Who broke up in 1983 (The Who Official Band Website). Roger Daltrey has always been a passionate musician; to the point where he even designed many of the bands guitars (The Who Official Band Website). Recently, Daltrey’s passion for music resurfaced. According to Mayer Nissim, a reporter for Digital Spy, “Roger Daltrey has confirmed that he...
