Article #3: “How Physical Fitness May Promote School Success”
By: Gretchen Reynolds Specific Issue: Studies show that children who are more fit get information easier than those who are not.
Global Issue: How does physical fitness promote success of schools? According to a new study, children who are physically fit absorb and retain new information more effectively than children who are out of shape. This new study has raised timely questions about the wisdom of slashing physical education programs at school. Parents and scientists who focus their studies on the physical aspect of the body, have known that being physically active and fit helps young people to settle and pay more attention in school than home. This is actually true, as before I used to be incredibly out of shape and everything was a drag for me, but now I am in much better shape and feel better than ever. So, it makes sense to me that this article states that being fit helps school success because I see it like this: You are fit, you learn easier, you learn easier, you do better in school, thus helping your school’s overall academic scores basically skyrocketing the success of schools. No doubt, in my opinion it is incredibly difficult staying in good shape, as it requires excellent conditioning of the body, and great nutritional ways, but in doing so, it benefits one so much. It makes one feel better about themselves, and in doing so, gives more confidence to the person. Like I said, I have never felt as confident as I do now, and not to my surprise, my grades have increased since I was chubbier and everything in life for me has been steering in a positive direction thank God. Fitness has…...

Gym Industry

...3 out of 4 adults are always on a look out for a deal when attending a gym. This is becoming ever more important among the heavier users. It is important for venues looking to protect their market position to roll their sleeves up and jump in with deals of their own if they are not to lose custom to their competitors.” – Michael Oliver, Senior Leisure and Media Analyst Leisure Review - UK - December 2011 The UK leisure industry peaked in value in 2007, just before the credit crunch and subsequent economic recession. Since then, it has declined considerably, by some 3% in current price terms, which represents a 22% contraction in real terms. The prospects for the leisure industry remain difficult: the Chancellor’s most recent Autumn Statement made it clear that austerity measures are here to stay for the foreseeable future, including a cap on public sector pay. Given that some leisure businesses have been just about surviving during 2011 in the hope that things will pick up again in 2012, this will have come as a huge disappointment to them and it will be no surprise if there is an increase in insolvencies and administrations as a result. The only potential glimmer of hope comes from the promise that inflation will fall significantly during the next 12 months but unless it goes into negative territory then consumers will still be seeing their real standard of living worsening, because at present earnings are not growing at......

Gym Case

...States have increased every year since 1987 and a strong market makes a strong business. We are a solid investment because start-up sports gyms on average take in 1,000 new members per year. This will allow our business to break even in less than five years. Our club, “True Fitness” will offer its members quality services and benefits that no other club can offer. We want to take investments and use them wisely in order to create a sports facility that pleases customers. In sports clubs, the top five most profitable programs/services are personal training, massage therapy, food/beverages, an aquatics program, and a tennis program. Our gym will provide all of these services and thus increase our productivity. We will build a large complex that will include a pool, personal training facilities, basketball courts, a day spa, tennis courts, and many other features to attract clientele. Through our knowledge of the Tri-Valley area and our willingness to take risks we will be able to build a single center into a profitable facility. Livermore, where our facility will be built has a large “20 to 64 year old” population. A Prescription or Gym Membership

...A Prescription or Gym Membership? They say you can never be too rich or too skinny. The quest for a diet that will finally shed those pounds is a never ending battle for many people. There are many options when choosing a plan to lose weight. Taking a pill that will magically shed the weight versus hours in a gym and monitoring calories appeals to many people. If the traditional method of losing weight through diet and exercise does not produce results, a non-traditional method could be the answer. There are questions to ask before choosing a method. How much weight loss is needed to improve health? How quickly is the weight loss needed? What lifestyle changes are required? How much can I afford financially? Weight loss occurs when the calories burned are greater than the calories ingested over a period of time. Two of the most common prescription or over-the-counter drugs are appetite suppressors and fat absorption inhibitors. There are also many natural herbs and supplements that claim to shed fat or increase metabolism. The natural way to lose weight is through diet and exercise. Limiting calories and increasing physical activity will cause a person to lose weight. Prescription drugs require doctor visits and are regulated by medical staff. Supplements can be purchased over-the-counter and are rarely approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Losing weight with diet and exercise on your own can be the least costly method. Taking a walk outside in a......

The Anti Gym

...The Anti-Gym “Meanwhile fitness never came naturally to me. Growing up I wasn’t an athlete, was relatively inactive and led a sedentary lifestyle.” said John, one of many victims of obesity. At first, he was not sure to share his story but after sharing he narrated as was his experience when he started gaining weight as a teenager: “I was 12 years old when I started putting the weight on and like many children today, I spent long hours in front of screens, TV, video games, movies and the computer, coupled with sugary treats, pop, chips and other snacks. Became my after school past-time. At the age of, 14 I woke up one morning, had a shower like I did every morning, but this morning was different. I normally avoided mirrors whenever I could, but not that day. As I stepped from the shower I caught myself in the mirror. I saw my protruding belly, chubby cheeks and multiple chins, my gaze wandering until eventually ending in a standoff, staring face-to-face with what I had become. As I looks into my own eyes, I started to sob, shedding uncontainable tears. It was that exact moment, my turning point, when I came to a stark realization that something had to change.” He thought “Enough is enough!” and that was in that moment he never looked back and his life changed forever. Nowadays, obesity in adolescents is a serious issue because they eat more and more junk food and this occurs because adolescents have a sedentary lifestyle, lack of adequate physical activity and poor......

Going to the Gym Narrative

...strong legs. For my blackbelt testing I kicked through a concrete block. I’ve also kicked through three boards and punched through two. Each board is equivalent to a human rib, so I was easily able to break people ribs when I was only eleven years old. Unfortunately life sometimes gets in the way and grow away from certain things. I haven’t been to a class in a few years. Although I don’t go to the gym I already know a lot about working out. In high school I took a class on how to go to the gym. The class was an easy “A,” I took it with a few of my friends and we had a good time and messed around all class. On top of that my father goes to the gym almost every day, and when I was younger he would bring me and teach me what different exercises were the best for each muscle and muscle group. Once I finally got a membership I was given six free personal training sessions also. Through the personal trainer I was really able to learn a lot of the best exercises. After about a month I got really tired of going to the gym and I cancelled the membership and haven't been to a gym since. In 2012 a very good friend of mine passed away. To raise money for the foundation that was created for him, a group of friends and I got donations to run legs of the Vermont City Marathon. The leg I ran was six miles long. For the marathon I did absolutely no training. Before that day I never run more than two miles in my life. Using my general athleticism I was able to run the six......

Gym Routines

...Tarren Jamal Bryant Assignment #5 December 4, 2013 Going to the gym Both men and women go to the gym regularly for a multitude of different reasons: some go to improve their performance in sports, others for health; while many commonly go to better their body image, striving even to look like those people in fitness magazines. It is true there is no one way to achieve one’s goals, but for a beginner the number choices can be disconcerting. There are literally hundreds of routines, diets, supplements, and ideas circulating around on the Internet; personal trainers and coaches constantly arguing and bickering about what works and what doesn’t—it’s enough to confuse anybody. In reality, one of the hardest decisions to make is actually what kind of workout routine to use; the big two are full body workouts and split routines, which differ mostly by the types of exercises implemented, time management, and muscle gain. It is most important that newbie gym-goers know the differences, pros, and cons of the possibilities, so that they may make an informed decision themselves. As the name implies, in full body workouts the entire body—more specifically, every muscle group— is exercised through weight training in a single session; to accomplish this, compound movements are used. These training movements involve more than one joint, thus utilizing more than one muscle at the same time (main muscle group, secondary muscle group). The foundation of any FBW plan revolves around......

Play Gyms and the Benefits for a Community

...Play Gyms: and the benefits for a community Lorel Grad Langara College Benefits of Parent and Tot play gyms in Mount pleasant Community I chose to explore the benefits of “Parent and Tot” play gyms in my community. Acting as a social network for parents and children, play gyms offer a positive social environment to play, learn, and converse with peers. Play gyms are a fun space for children to play and be physically active. Lastly with the ever increasing housing costs, children have limited space to play as larger places become more expensive. Therefore, play gyms have an overall positive affect on toddlers and adults alike promoting physical, emotional, and social well-being while keeping costs to a minimum. Healthy child development is an essential determinant of health because of the longterm effects on the rest of a child's life. Having a healthy upbringing can influence choices later on in life to prevent obesity, increase activity, and create a foundation for social skills. Parent-Tot programs deal with many of the determinants of health that are outside the scope of the health care system. A child's social support networks are just as important as maintaining their physical exercise. These play gyms are great for learning social skills, for instance children learn how to take turns, and exercise patients. Play gyms also allow other adults to interact with each......

Gym Candy

...Gym Candy By: Carl Deuker How do the characters change or evolve through the course of the story? What events trigger such changes? In the story I read called Gym Candy a boy was just going into his freshman year and wanted to be a starter on the varsity team. And when he didn’t make it as a starter he only got one chance to do something when the starting running back got into trouble and was suspended for the final game of the season. If the team won they went to the playoffs, but Mick (the main character) got stopped one foot short of scoring the winning touchdown with no time remaining. When he thought about it he knew that the starter would’ve made it and that if he took just a few steroids before the season he could get. So he took them and couldn’t stop himself from taking more later into the season and got caught and failed at committing suicide. So when a character changes in a story they usually do something bad they shouldn’t have and make up for their mistakes and come back and make it to the top again. The evens that trigger those things are something the character doesn’t like, like in Gym Candy when Mick gets stopped on the goal line then out lifted in the weight room. What are you willing to give up to be part of a group? How important is it to be part of a group of friends or team? How do the characters in your book respond to the issue of fitting in? There are a few thing s I’m willing to give up to be part of a group. One of them is some time.......

Gym Volleyball

...Gym Volleyball Final Essay 3/1/2012 Difference between indoor volleyball and beach volleyball The first difference that I will be explaining about indoor volleyball and beach volleyball is the courts. Indoor courts are 18mx9m with a parallel attack line, also the players from the back row in indoor volleyball must stay behind the attack line when hitting the ball. In beach volleyball the courts are smaller they are 16mx 8m as I saw in the video of Cody and Pats men’s open I determined that there is enough room for two players in each side of the court it gives the game more intensity when playing. You also noticed that the player may hit the ball from anywhere on their side of the net, if you get to experience beach volleyball you will be glad the court is smaller because you will get exhausted right away do to the sand that holds you back and how much faster the game gets to be because the ball will be able to stay in the air and won’t become a dead ball this makes the game more entertaining. Indoor volleyballs are made up from leather and are much heavier since I played indoor I felt the difference right away since the ball is heavier you are able to hit harder for a faster spike. Now I beach volleyball they are softer, lighter and a bit bigger than indoor balls since is lighter than it can float more in the air and wind so when you get a chance to serve the wind can help a small curve the ball. Also in Indoor volleyball is played with six......
