HSM 543 Health Service Finance

I have conducted several evaluations into our current issues of improving the financial well-being of our hospital. I have several ideas that would create positive revenue and decrease quality assurance issues. I have a few considerations on how we could improve and reinforce our current accounts receivables issues. It will take the assistance from many of the departments such as admissions/registration, chart documentation, claims processing, payment posting, charge capture, and secondary billing/patient follow up. These areas are critical for the modifications to have sustaining results.
A clerk added to the night shift from 11pm to 7 am would drastically reduce errors in registration and admissions. This allows for the emergency room staff to concentrate on their jobs which is taking care of the patients. The proper registration and insurance information allows the registration clerk to bill the right insurance company based on the codes documented for that company and patient. This action would need to be budgeted for and several interviews done to locate two experienced clerks from the current pool or two new hires. Also, adding new management software would create a log of changes, errors, overrides, etc. that a knowledgeable Quality Assurance Manager can use to provide check and balance. These improvements would reduce the errors in admissions and claims processing.
The next area needs improving charting and use of the Electronic Medical Records (EMR). There are several ways to repair this problem retraining, changing the suspension policy in regards documenting, etc. The two doctors need to be directed and given n extensive retraining for the use of the EMR. This will ensure they can retrieve the correct patient and their information. During this training, these…...

...Health Services October 7, 2012 Week 5 Assignment Professor Oestmann Em-sheree Patterson HIPPA HIPAA The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) established new standards for the confidentiality, security, and transmissibility of health care information. There are three types of standards created by HIPAA: privacy, security and administrative simplification (e.g., transaction standards). Taken together, these regulations have a major impact on the day-to-day functioning of the nation's hospitals and affect virtually every department of every entity that provides or pays for health care. Researching the different topics available, I have chosen the HIPPA issue. I have chose this because it plays a major part in the health care industry. Nearly every time you hear healthcare the phrase/word HIPPA follows not long after. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) established new standards for the confidentiality, security, and transmissibility of health care information. HIPPA is in place to retain the privacy within the healthcare policies. HIPPA provides the ability to transfer and continue health insurance coverage for millions of American workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs, reduces health care fraud and abuse, and mandates industry-wide standards for health care information on electronic billing and other processes. Working in the healthcare industry allowed me to see that without......

...small, services may not be in high demand. It is very important that the stakeholders assess the changing values, attitudes, and demographic characteristic to continue providing optimal care. Depending on the nature of the local economy, wage rates, disposable income, unemployment and transportation can all have an economic influence on the development of a clinic. The mission statement should be to continuously improve the quality of health services provided to the communities they serve by creating an environment that promotes physician participation, recognizes the value and contributions of the employees, and strives to meet the unique healthcare needs of our local communities. The goal should be to provide excellent physical, emotional and spiritual care for each patient and their families, build a work environment where each person is valued, respected and has an opportunity for personal and professional growth, strengthen relationships with universities, colleges, other hospitals, agencies and the community. There are several issues that would be valuable to consider in identifying candidate measurement areas and developing performance measures for the hospital outpatient setting, including: The type of care and services delivered in the hospital outpatient setting is not homogenous across hospitals or populations served. Services/procedures delivered in the hospital outpatient setting vary hospital-to-hospital as a function of size, location, service......

...CHAPTER 8 HEALTH SERVICE DELIVERY MODULE 8.1 Overview This chapter presents the health delivery module of the assessment. Section 8.1 defines health service delivery and its key components. Section 8.2 provides guidelines on preparing a profile of health service delivery for the country of interest, including instructions on how to customize the profile for country-specific aspects of the health delivery process. Section 8.3 presents the indicator-based assessment, including detailed descriptions of the indicators. Section 8.4 discusses how to summarize the findings and develop recommendations. 8.1.1 What Is Health Service Delivery? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines service delivery as the way inputs are combined to allow the delivery of a series of interventions or health actions (WHO 2001b). As noted in the World Health Report 2000, “the service provision function [of the health system] is the most familiar; the entire health system is often identified with just service delivery.” The report states that service provision, or service delivery is the chief function the health system needs to perform (WHO 2000). As such, Figure 8.1 (see also Chapter 1, Figure 1.1) shows the relationship between service delivery and the other modules of this health systems assessment and their relationship with health system objectives. Because of the limited time to conduct this assessment, more emphasis will be placed on personal health (as opposed to public health) services and......

...HEALTH SERVICE MANAGEMENT 1 HEA 220/ DR CHRISTINE CONNOLLY Tricia Cigobin Welcome to our staff meeting everyone, it seems there are some major issues and concerns that have arrived in the office that we need to address and discuss today. This staff meeting will take some time so please everyone be patient. I know a lot of you have been coming to me with concerns about a voice translation system for the office, as I feel this would be a great asset to the practice, but I just don’t that it is one of our major issues that we should spend a lot of our finances on. The voice translation software with cost us approximately over 10,000 dollars. If everyone can continue to type in the system as we have been doing, you will find that I have a lot more improvements for the office that you will love. I understand that it is a lot of typing but if we install the voice translation software what will be the purpose of all the employees, no one would be needed in the office and all of you will be out of a job and we definitely don’t want that. Here goes my proposal for the office that will be a great improvement and less work for everyone. I was given a budget of 42,000 dollar’s to make sure all of the major issues are taken addressed. I did a lot of research and the total I came up with was 100,000 thousand dollars which of course is way over the budget I was given, so I had to prioritize the most important, the most affordable, and of course the most effective for the......

...Finance Assignment III: Chapter 5 1. Explain the differences between fixed costs, semi fixed costs and variable costs The differences between fixed costs, semi-fixed costs and variable costs has to do with the amount of services provided. Variable costs are cost that are expected to increase and decreases with volume (patient’s days, number of visits, etc...). Fixed costs are costs expected to remain constant regardless of volume. Semi-fixed costs are those that are fixed with in ranges that are less than the relevant range. 2. Total Costs are made up of what components? Total costs are made up of two components fixed costs + variable costs 8. What are the Critical Differences in profit analysis when conducted in a capitated environment versus a fee-for-service environment? In the fee-for service graph the total revenues line is sloping upwards.  However, in a capitated environment, the total revenues line is horizontal, which shows that total revenue is the same number regardless of volume as measured by the number of visits.  Under capitation, revenue is being driven by the insurance contract (I.e., by the premium payment and the number of covered lives, or enrollees).  This change in the revenue source is the core of the logic switch from fee-for-service to capitation; the clinic is being rewarded to manage the healthcare of the population served rather than merely to provide services.  10. a. What cost structure is best when a provider is......

Introduction to Health Services

...Health Care Professionals Identify and describe three reasons there may be a physician shortage rather than a surplus in the United States. Although previously America had a surplus in Physicians and medical professionals it is no longer the case now. The first reason for this shortage is that Congress, in its attempt to address the issue of surplus, commissioned the Council on Graduate Medical Education (CGME), which reported that by the year 2000 the expected staffing ratio of one physician for every 370 citizens was more than adequate and that the country would be well advised to scale back on residency funded programs. Also CGME believed that enrollment should be cut 15% in order to control physician supply, hence in retrospect why we have such a major shortage. The second reason is that America is an aging society and we do not have enough doctors to handle that demand. Patients over the age of 65 require significantly more direct physician care than younger patients hence the number of doctors in the field have not been able to handle the orders .Physicians themselves favor a more controllable lifestyle contend William Torrens(2010). In the academic year 2000-2001 nearly 46% of the incoming first year medical students were women (Tilden, 2001). Although the growing number of female physicians is a good sign for our society it also indicates that women do not work the same long hours as men due to family obligations. Identify and describe three factors......
