Unit 1
In both your Reading and in the Learning Activity you have reviewed the legal forms of business entity. Depending on how your business is set up as a legal business entity affects the financial and long term success of your business.

Describe three types of business entities, and describe at least three stakeholders for each one. What are the stakeholders’ interests in each of these business entities? Do any of these stakeholder interests conflict with each other? If so, how?

Unit 2

This week you reviewed the employment process in your Learning Activity. Now you will get an opportunity to discuss some of the issues that affect small businesses in this arena.

What do you think are the most serious weaknesses in the interviewing process as conducted at many small businesses? How could these be remedied? Are on-line testing and games to screen potential candidates fair in your estimation? Why or why not?

Unit 3

This Discussion provides you with an opportunity to apply and discuss the employment process concepts presented in your Reading and Learning Activity.

You practiced with the hiring process concepts in the Learning Activity this week. Learning how to apply this process should better prepare you for your current or future management position. Most managers must participate in or are responsible for the hiring process at some point in their jobs. If you run a small business you may have to do all the hiring yourself, at least initially.

Read the scenario below and then respond to the Discussion topics.

Kaplan Turbine Runner Design

...85 Hydraulic turbines—basic principles and state-of-theart computational fluid dynamics applications P Drtina* and M Sallaberger Sulzer Hydro AG, Zurich, Switzerland ¨ Abstract: The present paper discusses the basic principles of hydraulic turbines, with special emphasis on the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a tool which is being increasingly applied to gain insight into the complex three-dimensional (3D) phenomena occurring in these types of fluid machinery. The basic fluid mechanics is briefly treated for the three main types of hydraulic turbine: Pelton, Francis and axial turbines. From the vast number of applications where CFD has proven to be an important help to the design engineer, two examples have been chosen for a detailed discussion. The first example gives a comparison of experimental data and 3D Euler and 3D Navier–Stokes results for the flow in a Francis runner. The second example highlights the state-of-the-art of predicting the performance of an entire Francis turbine by means of numerical simulation. Fighting Against Currency Depreciation, Macroeconomic Instability and Sudden Stops∗ Luis-Felipe Zanna† First Draft: October 2002 This Draft: November 2005 Abstract In this paper we show that in the aftermath of a crisis, a government that changes the nominal interest rate in response to currency depreciation can induce aggregate instability in the economy by generating self-fulfilling endogenous cycles. In particular if a government raises the interest rate proportionally more than an increase in currency depreciation then it induces self-fulfilling cyclical equilibria that are able to replicate some of the empirical regularities of emerging market crises. We construct an equilibrium characterized by the self-validation of people’s expectations about currency depreciation and by the following stylized facts of the “Sudden Stop” phenomenon: a......

Review on Kaplan and Zingales Research Paper About Relationship Between Investment Cash Flow and Financial Constraint

...Review and Evaluation on ‘Do Investment-Cash Flow Sensitivities Provide Useful Measures of Financing Constraints’ by Kaplan and Zingales (QJE,1997) The research paper written by Steven N. Kaplan and Luigi Zingales as titled above which was published in year 1997 is to test the relationship linking investment-cash flow with financial constraint. In their research, they found that firm with a low level of financial constraint have a tendency to have a high investment-cash flow sensitivity. However, the findings contradict with the other research paper especially the FHP, 1988 paper. They used the same sample used in research done by Fazzari, Hubbard, and Petersen (FHP, 1988). But they only took the firms from Class 1 in FHP research which is manufacturing firms and classified as low dividend firms with dividend payout ratio with value below 10%, where they believe to be firms with an abnormally high investment-cash flow sensitivity (Kaplan & Zingales, 1997). The reasons why Kaplan and Zingales chose Class 1 firms as their sample are because of the strong connection illustrated between the firm’s investment and cash flow, FHP argue Class 1 firms are financially constrained even the result indicates that the firms have significantly high sensitivity of investment-cash flow, and lastly because the sample size is considered manageable for a costly research design. They follow the same timeline which is from year 1970 to 1984. Research is conducted by first determining the......

Discussion Paper

...A Discussion of the Theories of Bronfenbrenner and Vygotsky Connie Hassan 2015 Abstract Child development is defined as a normal progression by which children change as they grow older by acquiring and refining knowledge, adjusting behaviours and mastering new skills. As children grow there are both quantitative and qualitative differences between them. Quantitative differences emerge in that children acquire more knowledge and grow physically larger and stronger. Qualitative differences in the way children think, behave, and perceive the world differently as they mature. Many theories of child development have emerged as researchers continue to try to support, contradict or integrate differing points of view. Theories of child development have reflected the thinking of the times in which they arose. Some more recently developed theoretical perspectives focus on children’s internal processes and others on external influences related to development. This essay will discuss two different theoretical approaches - sociocultural theory, which stresses that social interaction is fundamental in the role of physical, cognitive and social development, and ecological systems theory, which integrates a holistic approach to encompassing the key individual and environmental influences on child development. The focus of the discussion is a comparative analysis of a theory from each of these approaches. A Discussion of the Theories of Bronfenbrenner and Vygotsky According to Berk...

Week 3 Discussion Paper Mgt/230 Uop

...Group Analysis Paper Wk 3 The CEO of Xerox Anne Mulcahy I believe used, concentration for her strategy. She didn’t acquire new companies outside of her industry. She dropped ones that were failing and focused on the ones that were more profitable. She threw out the old idea of expensive printers to high-end digital color printers. She also poured money into research and development to come up with new products to put them over their competitors. Her decisions were sound because she brought a company back from the brink of bankruptcy and turned it back into a thriving business. CEO of Coca-Cola Neville Isdell also used concentration and possibly concentric diversification for his strategy. He was brought back to Coke to help make the company’s fizzling profits stable again. Coke was struggling with Pepsi and if they should branch out to snack foods like their competitor had. Instead, he wanted to stay true to their soft drink origin. Their strategy for growth is to go global as aggressively as possible. Mr. Isdell’s strategy was spot on because Coke is a global force in the beverage industry. I know when I lived in Japan, I saw Coke vending machines everywhere! These machines could house both hot and cold beverages! Now that’s an idea to bring to America! With over 80 beverages, Coke offers I forsee them being in the forefront of business in this particular industry. VF Corp CEO Mackey McDonald’s style is more of concentric diversification because his company obtains new...

Taped Role Play - Discussion Paper

...TAPED ROLE PLAY – DISCUSSION PAPER The interaction was a single 20 minute session with a young married mother of two school-age children. To enable me to work with the helpee and develop empathic understanding of the issue from her perspective I recognised differences in our age and marital status which would help me maintain focus on her viewpoint. I identified a possible block to my understanding could be our different cultural upbringings and by being aware of this I was able to remain present in the helpee’s world. (3.2) I began the session explaining my limitations as a trainee and that I would be using counselling skills during our session. I went on to outline confidentiality, its meaning and exceptions, at the end of this I asked if she understood and was happy to continue as well as if she had any questions she would like to ask. On review I would expand on the explanation of my skills limitation by assuring the helpee that if I felt I was nearing the limits of my ability I would make her aware and offer appropriate referral if required. Also in addition to asking if the helpee understood confidentiality and had any questions I would include her at the outset by asking her own understanding of confidentiality and making the initial contract one that we had negotiated and arrived at together (1.2 & 2.2) On listening back I realised I failed to make clear the 20 minute duration, which is something I have not omitted to do in previous interactions as I am...

...BENEFITS OF NATURE: TOWARD AN INTEGRATIVE FRAM~WORK STEPHEN KAPLAN Department ofPsychology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, !ll148109-1109, U.$.A. Abstract Directed attention plays an important role in human information processing; its fatigue, in turn, has far reaching consequences. Attention Restoration Theory provides an analysis of the kinds of experiences that lead to recovery from such fatigue. Natural environments turn out to be particularly rich in the character istics necessary for restorative experiences. An integrative framework is proposed that places both directed attention and stress in the larger context of human-environment relationships. © 1995 Academic Press Limited Introduction Evidence pointing to the psychological benefits of nature has accumulated at a remarkable rate in a relatively short period of time. Whether a theoreti cal understanding of these restorative influences has kept pace with the empirical work is, however, less clear. As Hartig and Evans (1993) have pointed out, theory in' this area has been dominated by con flicting positions, one enlphasizing stress reduction (Ulrich, 1983) and the other concerned with recov ery of the capacity to focus attention (Kaplan & Talbot, 1983; Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989). While it might be argued that these positions are hopelessly far apart, Hartig and Evans hold out hope for a syn thesis. The purpose of this paper is to propose a way in which such an integration......

...TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENES Environmental Engineering Final thesis Timo Flaspöhler Design of the runner of a Kaplan turbine for small hydroelectric power plants Supervisor Commissioned by Tampere 2007 Jaakko Mattila Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Mechanical engineering department TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENES Environmental Engineering Timo Flaspöhler Final thesis Supervisor November 2007 Keywords Design of the runner of a Kaplan turbine for small hydroelectric power plants 78 pages, 42 pages Appendix Jaakko Mattila Electricity tariff, small hydroelectric power plant, Kaplan turbine, runner, adaptation mechanism, stress analysis, technical drawings ABSTRACT The final thesis deals with the design of the runner of a Kaplan turbine. It might be that due to the increasing of the electricity tariff in the last years small hydroelectric power plants become cost effective. Since the runner of a small hydroelectric power plant is quite small, it has to be reexamined if the hub of the runner provides enough room for a proper adaptation mechanism. For this purpose the main characteristics of the runner are determined. Then, important data such as the suction head, the occurring forces or the critical speed are established. After those data are known, a detailed stress analysis of the developed adaptation mechanism follows. The stress analysis shows that the mechanism to adjust the blades is able to withstand the occurring forces.......

Organizational Behavior Forces Discussion Paper

...Organizational Behavior Forces Discussion Paper Team B MGT/307 November 29, 2011 Introduction Organizational structure refers to both the formal and informal frameworks that shape how a business is operated. A successful business is determined how they treat there customers. This paper will discuss how competition, the economy and customer demands affect the business world today. Competition Competition is the foundation for thriving businesses. For any potential successful business, competition provides employers with the necessary tools to become a better business to better serve its customers. Moreover I, LaQuoya work for a member’s only establishment, The Augusta Country Club (ACC). It is city based and the only know competitor is the Westlake Club (WC). Our establishment thrives based on the proper treatment of our members. The members pay top dollar to be a part of our business. So, our customer service is what determines the perseverance of our business. In addition, unlike The ACC, Westlake Club only allows its members to be native to the area; whereas the ACC accepts members from anywhere in the world. Therefore, a big part of business is accepting all people who are willing to pay for your services. Kellogg’s is big on competition. We have a lot of major competitors that try to take our business everyday. Kellogg’s is also known for Keebler, Murray, Famous Amos, and President baking. If you see any of these products on...
