Midterm Exam

• Access the Week Four Electronic Reserve Readings located under the materials section of your student website. • Read this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings. • Write a paragraph of approximately 100 words for each section listed below.

1. Using the critical thinking skills you have gained so far and referring to the materials provided for this assignment, identify two possible strategies that Thomas Hutchinson or Samuel Adams likely used to develop and improve their thinking as those historical events unfolded prior to taking a stand and acting according to their beliefs.

Samuel Adams may have used strategy one: analyzing a single statement for what is means by asking yourself if the statement makes sense and if so responding with a yes or no answer. Adams was not only an extremist but a political writer speaking to issues that directly affected colonies like the Stamp Act and tea distribution from East India. Both of these events affected many colonists in a negative way because the Stamp Act added taxation to certain products, while India tea imports, caused some colonists to lose money from their own tea sells. Adams would have had to ask himself why these acts where just or unjust by analyzing them individually in a literal sense. He publicly came to the conclusion that these acts were unjust because they both caused colonists to lose money and also put a damper on their personal values and liberty. Another strategy he may have used it number 3, which is when something that is presented as factual isn’t and therefore needs an explanation on why it can or can’t be validated. By evaluating and concluding in his writings that colonists should not be taxed without the proper representation to back up this very law. He successfully evaluated this situation for what it was, an illegal…...

...Tyranny and American Democracy Oppression is something dreaded by everyone. This universal fear was a much larger problem in the 1800’s than it is today. Tyranny was a fear that the Federalists, Anti-Federalists, and Alexis de Tocqueville had in common. The Federalists feared tyranny of the majority, or faction while the Anti-Federalists feared tyranny of the aristocracy. Tocqueville feared “soft despotism” but supported tyranny of the patriarchy. While the Federalist and the Anti-Federalists were the visionaries for America who tried to prevent different tyrannies, Tocqueville discusses the hypocrisies in America that the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists were against. The Federalists strongly believed that the newly founded republic needed a large, centralized government in order to discourage tyranny of the majority. Hamilton voices this opinion when he says “a firm Union will be of the utmost moment to the peace and liberty of the States as a barrier against domestic faction and insurrection.” (Hamilton, 66, Federalist No. 9) This is because a large, centralized government uses the system of the checks and balances, which prevent domestic faction and revolt. The Federalists made it clear that they opposed a mob ruling and the minorities being denied their rights. The main danger the new republic faced, they argued, was the superior force of an “interested and overbearing majority.” (Madison, 72, No. 10) The Federalists solution on how to deal with majority faction...

...Have you ever wondered how much energy your family us in a day? In our world today we have all kinds of new knowledge and technology to help us save energy available for us. Some of this comes in the form of light bulbs and other is just to train family members to shut the light off when they walk out of the room. Either way with a product or by turning a light off we should all do our best to save energy. I believe this is a moral issue because some people just do not care how much electricity they waist or that by using certain products they could save our planet from pollution. Pollution is another issue that is big concern in our world today. The community where I live has a chemical plant not far from it and over the years there have been many struggles to get them to dispose of their wastes properly. This is our world and if we do not take care of it by conserving energy and limiting pollution what will it be like for our children and grand children? Will there even be a world? Will there be diseases worse than cancer? These issues I believe are more of moral issue than anything else and it all comes down to respecting others as well as our homes and environments. To solve these issues I believe that there should be training available in the schools, work places and communities. Factories that have chemicals or cause any other kind of pollution should be punished for not obeying the laws and regulations on dumping wastes. Every employee should be made to take......

...English 111 05 March 4, 2014 Homelessness In the U.S. there seems to be a lot of homeless people. Approximately 3.5 million people are likely to experience homelessness in any given year(www.nlchp.org). There are many reasons why people become homeless which are, domestic violence, addiction disorders, lack of jobs, mental and medical health issues, lack of education, and insurance. Some of these problems spiral out of control resulting in the inability to provide for oneself or ones family. In most cases homelessness is rarely caused by one factor but it can happen. Fifty percent of the cities surveyed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors identified domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness. Approximately sixty three percent of homeless women have experienced domestic violence in their lives (National Coalition for the Homeless). Women generally are scared to ask for help for the fear of the one causing their violence may take it out on the one that helps her so therefore women tend to fend for themselves. Some women think it will ruin their pride to ask for help so they stay until the violence gets so bad they can’t take it anymore. So they choose to be homeless verses asking friends and family for help. Addiction and substance abuse isn’t generally a cause of its own in homelessness but it does happen that way. Most people that have an addiction or substance abuse problem are already homeless but for some people it is a......

...Midterm Paper Many artists base their songs on past experiences in their life. Many of them are happy, sad, controversial, and at times have no meaning to them. One particular artist has many of these themes hidden away in her music. Grimes is a renowned artist known for her Indie music. With her ethereal and ambient sounding tones, it is hard to differentiate actual lyrics and when her voice is actually the rhythm that is being heard in her music. Her song Oblivion is perhaps one of her most understandable when it comes to lyrics. Her song Oblivion has a story, poetic themes, and imagery. Grimes' Oblivion has story engrained in her lyrics. When the song starts, it has an upbeat electronic tempo in the begging. It sounds as though, it would not have any lyrics because of its heaviness. The first line of the song is as if it is an event going on in that moment. It’s almost like a moment in her life which she is recalling. Grimes sings (2012)"And now the walk about, after dark." It is assumed she is walking about at night. The she goes on to say "It’s my point of view", which assumes she has an opinion on walking about at night. It is confirmed when she goes on to say (2012)"If someone could break your neck. Coming up behind you, always coming and you'd never have a clue". That line is very gruesome, so there may be some underlying context to that line. Perhaps Grimes was assaulted at some point in her life or is making a general statement, that it is not safe at night.......

...Assignment 1: Essay HUM 111: World Cultures I Assignment 1: Mummy’s Curse The image of the curse of the mummy instantly conjures up elaborate stories and fantastic discoveries made upon entry into the tomb of King Tutankhamen (King Tut). According to Sayre (2012) “King Tuts tomb was the only tomb discovered that was not destroyed and looted by grave robbers.” In 1922, Howard Carter (a renowned excavator) and his benefactor, the Fifth Earl of Carnarvon, were the first to enter the tomb. According to Luckhurst (2010), the tomb had been uncovered in Carter’s last-chance season of digging in the Valley of the Kings. No new tomb had been discovered for over a decade. In November 1922, they entered the antechamber and the news swept the world. In February 1923, they entered the burial chamber. A sequence of calamitous episodes occurred affecting the men who first entered the tomb. Some of the men became sick and some died. Also, some of their pets died. Some people were using these events to make claims that there was a curse associated with the opening of the tomb. According to Rompalske (2000), the story centered on Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter, and the hardships they suffered. The first conclusion is an inference that has to do with stories regarding the “curse”. At the opening of the tomb of King Tut, a clay tablet was unearthed in the antechamber, with a warning to keep out of the tomb or else experience a horrible death. According to......

...Midterm Paper This semester I have learned some valuable info about myself and the primary piece that I have learned is that I am anxious to begin my career. This stems from the fact that I will graduate with bachelors in December, and I am so anxious to begin my masters program which is the final obstacle that I must pass in order to officially reach my dream. If I was to make any changes it would be to complete my degree in four years right after high school, just to expedite the process, but who’s to say that I would be where I am now if I took that route. What I have learned about others is, that being in a senior filled class like ours many of us have the same anxiety that I have. Most are anxious to begin their respective careers and grow as individuals as they enter the next phase in their lives. As a collegiate basketball assistant coach I look to impact the lives of young males looking to further their academic and athletic aspirations; through instruction and guidance within the sport of basketball. After completing my bachelors degree I am looking to fill a graduate assistant coaching position at the division I level, in order to ensure that meet the desired qualifications requested from aspiring coaches of my stature. In the future I see myself as one of top names in college basketball as an assistant coach. I want to be a valuable and coveted asset to a program, but more importantly to prospective student athletes who are looking to be guided and shaped into......

The exam will take the form of a legal memo, in which you brief me on the legal standing of our client, Joe Doe. I have provided some links to forms of legal memos that you might use, and there are other examples online. http://www.law.cuny.edu/legal-writing/students/memorandum/memorandum-3.html http://www.lawandborder.com/Academic/LW/LW--Samples/SampleMemoSTCL.pdf You will need to research the position of the individual whom you are representing. What are the positions regarding each party in this case – that is, The Corporation, John Smith and Joe Doe? To what extent do these individuals’ values reflect their positions toward the issue, toward the plaintiff, toward the tribe and toward the state? Would it make any difference whether this took place in a PL 280 or non-280 state? When you have determined the answers to these questions, begin your legal research and prepare to argue your case in court. You will need to analyze pertinent law as we have done in class, looking for facts, issues and analyses, just as the online memo templates suggest. When you mention a particular case, you must cite it using the following hint: Montana v. United States, 450 U.S. 544 (1981), 546. Remember, your boss is very lazy and hates research and has......

I also think that they used a lot of reasoning and assessing in order to get the proper information to get the support that they needed to fight back against taxes that they felt were unlawful.
