Importance of Communication

...This module discussed the importance of communication. One of the goals of GCU is to help you to effectively communicate throughout your life. Access and view the "Communication Tool" located in the Additional Resources Folder in Canyon Connect. All of these resources discuss how to communicate effectively with others. Why is it important to communicate effectively with others? How will effective communication help students in their academic career? Give examples. Why do you think GCU emphasizes quality discussion posts and proper etiquette in the Discussion Forums? While every academic career requires some type of effective communication, it is especially important in the context of an online learning environment. Without face-to-face contact, nonverbal cues/ body language, and the ability to move a conversation along quickly (as would be possible in a classroom environment where responses can simply “bounce around”) we are left with only our written communication. Because of this, we are motivated to make our points clearly and completely in fewer words, while still maintaining an interest in the overall impression the other students and professor have of us. While this scenario presents challenges, it also presents opportunities. By eliminating many of the nuances of communication between human beings, we are able to focus on the content of each other’s writing and eliminate distractions. By limiting the “bounce” of conversation, we are also packing more relevant......

Importance of Communication

...Importance of Communication Michelle Rogers Grantham University Week 7 Assignment Importance of Communication Communication is a complicated process. It consists of a message, a sender, a recipient and a multitude of factors in between. The three basic styles of communication can best be categorized as: passive,. aggressive and assertive. It's useful to keep in mind that most people use a combination of these three styles, depending on the environment and circumstances. For example, your communication style with your colleagues may differ from your interactions with your parents. Passive communicators generally avoid conflict, let other people make choices and are easily manipulated by other people. They don't like to "rock the boat" and often wish they had handled things better after the fact. Aggressive communicators have a selfish approach to interaction, generally having little regard for the opinions or feelings of others. They use criticism and ridicule and achieve goals at the expense of others. They tend to blame anyone but themselves for things that don't suit them. Assertive communicators display self-confidence, show a genuine interest in problem-solving and have the ability to listen to all sides of a story. They have the ability to confront conflict in a positive and mutually beneficial manner. They can say the right thing at the right time and are direct and...

Importance of Communication

...Importance of communication Effective communication is essential to the success of any business organization. Since the world is becoming a global village it is of utmost importance to effectively communicate within and outside of an organization. However, due to large organizational sizes and tall organizational structures it becomes difficult to get any message across. This creates boundaries in the organization, internally in terms of various departments and externally in terms of customers. To overcome this dilemma, in the video ‘Messages that Stick', Professor Chip Heath emphasizes on the importance of making the point stick rather than just getting the message across and explains how to go about it. Professor Heath commences his lecture with focus on urban legends, that is, myths and stories. Urban legends have been stuck in peoples' minds and have persisted over decades, spanning over cultural boundaries. For instance, the story of the dead girl who appears on a dark eerie roadside is known almost world over, yet in different situations. In the American version, the man who finds the girl is in a car. In the European version, the car is replaced by a carriage. Whereas in the Chinese version, the mode of transport is believed to be a horse. The professor explains that urban legends succeed even though they lack many advantages that organizational messages have. They do not have support from top management. They do not have advertising budgets, or public......

By looking at the population at large in the United States, some of the typical jobs and studying abroad programs, you can see that being bilingual, especially with English and Spanish is a very marketable resource. By observing the population at large in the United States, one can see that Caucasian is not the only ethnic background being represented. In fact, the United States is the fourth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. In the past twenty years there has been an increase in the number of Spanish speakers needed in the US. As the Hispanic population grows we need to do our part by learning the second language of the US. By taking a look at journals and newspapers, one can see that Spanish is slowly and surely working its way in as a part of the culture. The Importance of Communication

...Not all parties to an interpersonal communication have an equal amount of time to speak and listen, as they might in a debate. The situation defines the amount of time each participant spends in each role. For instance, a worker receiving instructions from his supervisor listens while the supervisor speaks. When the supervisor finishes and says, “Any ques- tions?” the worker then becomes the speaker and the supervisor becomes the listener. The back-and-forth interpersonal communication in that situation is limited but vital. The amount of time each party spends speaking and lis- tening is not equal, but it is appropriate to the situation. The supervisor’s effort to understand the worker’s questions and answer them correctly makes the difference between an effective interpersonal encounter and an ineffective one. On the other end of the spectrum of speaking and listening times, we have highly interactive situations, such as brainstorming sessions involving teams of 5–10 people. In this case, almost everyone is both a speaker and a listener, sometimes simultaneously. “That’s my idea of how to improve our customer service. Now, Barbara, tell us yours.” Different situations determine the appropriate amounts of speaking and listening time for each participant. Effective communications needn’t be time-consuming or involve long meetings. For example, a manager walking down a hallway spots a subordi- nate and says, “Remember, I need the Hyatt file with the......

The Importance of Intercultural Communication

...The Importance of Intercultural Communication Western International University The Importance of Intercultural Communication Doing business globally is not just about dollars and cents anymore, sure money matters most but in order to get a deal done internationally there is a ton of preparation that has to be done. Communication between global business parties requires extensive research and time in order for both parties to grasp each other’s cultures. Learning and understanding the culture of a potential business partner comes way before the dotted line and depending on who grasps cultures better will be the difference between a company or its competitors making a deal. The world is a much smaller place than it once was, and one would think that given that fact it would be easier to grasp intercultural communication; however, learning and understanding other cultures brings with it an array of challenges such as onstage and backstage behaviors, how people learn and want to be communicated with, how certain cultures view and respond to other cultures, these and other barriers present enormous challenges to intercultural communication and to doing business globally. Getting a deal done internationally is enough of a reason to learn about other cultures as stated above if it makes dollars it makes sense, but learning another culture is very intricate process. “The failure of companies that go international usually occurs because someone didn’t......

The Importance of Professional Communication

...The Importance of Professional Communication James Cherry III GS1145/Strategies for the Technical Professional Instructor: Chioma Semanas April 17, 2016 The Importance of Professional Communication Professional communication is of tantamount importance in the workplace, because without it supervisors and employees alike would be in constant conflict with each other. They would spend more time putting out fires of conflict than they would doing their jobs. Professional communication keeps the workplace safe from various forms of workplace infractions, such as sexual harassment and bigotry. Unprofessional Communication: Many years ago, I was an assistant supervisor in the receiving department at the Burlington Coat Factory’s main distribution center in Burlington, New Jersey. I had an employee under me that drove a custom made Mercedes convertible, and wore expensive clothes all the time. He was only making minimum wage at the time ($5.35), yet he had all the money and things of someone wealthy. I finally deduced that the young man was a drug dealer, using the job as a cover for his erroneous activities. Since I was immature at the time, I set out on a campaign to expose him verbally in front of the rest of the receiving crew. I did this for a few days before, the young man finally grew tired of the harassment and snapped saying, “Call me a drug dealer again and I will slap the shit out of you!” I was so, stunned by the ferocity of his response that I said nothing......

There are two main components of communication they are verbal and non verbal communication. Communication is the process of exchanging messages verbally and non verbally. The communication process starts with the context or the message that needs to be sent in this case the sender would be the examiner. Next the sender or the person who sends the message uses words and or symbols to convey their message symbols could be charts, hand motions, or simple expressions. Once the message is sent the recipient or receiver which could be an employee or a victim of a crime that is being investigated, this person or persons must make sure to listen and interpret the message that is being conveyed to them from the examiner. Then feedback is given so that the examiner can analyze the efficiency of the message and how it was received by the victim or employee. This is why these two components are very important to the communication process. The examiner has to verbally express their opinion or idea to the person to whom they are speaking, and then the idea has to be heard and processed by the receiver. If the communication is not received correctly the whole communication process can be misunderstood and in...
