Impression Management

Impression management is a goal-directed conscious or unconscious process in which people attempt to influence the perceptions of others about a person, object, or event. Everyone uses impression management from time to time. * In what situation are you most likely to use impression management? What situation are you most likely not going to work to use impression management? What is the typical difference between these two situations?
I would most likely use impression management when seeking employment. It’s very important that the employer receives the impression that you’re a great fit for the company. I wouldn’t use impression management at a family reunion or an event where there’s family and friends who knows me well. The difference in the two situations is that one is with relatives and the other one isn’t.

* Provide an example of when you used impression management successfully. What was the outcome and why?
Everyone knows that employment is very important and it’s important to impress the hiring managers. I read the entire job duties associated with the position and knew exactly what to say and how to say it. I was able to impress them enough to get the Out of 20 people who were interviewed I was the one who received the job.

* Now provide an example in which you attempted to use impression management and it failed. Why did it fail, and what was that outcome?
School has always been hard for me and a struggle although I know education is important and that’s why I refuse to give up. I tried impress a teacher one time and it didn’t work she still gave me a failing grade. I believe it failed because I tried to hard to impress her.

...First Impressions First impressions are made every day in our social, business, and educational world. They are our first judgment and opinion of someone’s character. First impressions can be made in person, or from a distance through communication with someone we have not yet met in person. First impressions can even be made indirectly by people who observe us and our interactions with others. Ultimately, upon meeting someone new, “we walk away from them with a first impression that is like a Polaroid picture – a head-to-toe image that develops instantly and never entirely fades” (Flora, 2004). Phone companies are constantly updating models of the same product to entice buyers, news agencies are constantly trying to out-do each other for ratings on trending topics. The pressure to remain relevant is high and it’s no wonder it trickles down to our personal and professional lives. The worst impression management mistake that I have seen was by a manager at my last job (bookstore). I worked for the company for almost 5 years and watched the way my manager played favorites and then denied it every time. It was on a daily occasion when I went into work that I would watch as my manager stood around with several of the male employees and one female employee talking sports.
