Integrity in Leadership
The integrity of a business and its leadership is vital to a successful business. No matter how great a product or service might be, if there are habits of illegal or immoral activity, customers will stop supporting the business associated with the offensive activity. Customers want to feel good about where they shop or do business. They can choose where they spend their money and if there is scandal, they will choose the competition. Lack of integrity in a business will soon be visible with some sort of scandal. Illegal activity will eventually be caught and publically displayed and destroy a company’s reputation. That is exactly what Dalman is facing if he would choose to accept the inspector’s offer and provide the food for the holiday party. After thanking his manager for bringing the information to his attention, Dalman should first find out if there is a “grandfather” clause in the new laws. Often when a new law such as this is passed, businesses are given time to change or if it would require a major expense, they sometimes offer a clause where the current owner does not need to change due to existing circumstances. This clause would only help the current owner and any future owners would have to make sure they were in compliance. Dalman also needs to consider reporting the inspector for inappropriate behavior. The inspector’s offer to the manager is equivalent to a bribe and would be considered illegal. Dalman and his manager could face bribery charges if they accept the offer and someone would find out about it and press charges. Dalman should consult his company’s legal counsel and see what they suggest. The city could require proof and if the inspector came back, it could be worse for the business. However, the city needs to know that their inspector is behaving in this manner. The inspector has probably made similar demands on other businesses in the area and Dalman could see if others would support him in his complaint against the inspector. Dalman must report it and have the support and guidance of his legal counsel. I would also suggest that Dalman ask for the inspector’s supervisor to come and inspect the facility and review the enclosure situation. This would allow Dalman to converse with the supervisor about the inspector’s behavior and ask for suggestions of how to change the placement of the enclosure. It would open an opportunity for dialogue and communication. Asking for a re-evaluation by the supervisor and Dalman reporting the original inspector’s behavior should show the city officials that Dalman is a man of integrity who is trying to do the right thing with his business and within the community. Once Dalman has a solution to the compliance in place, he could offer to cater the holiday event at a discount or as a donation without receiving anything in return. He could also offer to host or provide food for a shelter or other charitable organization in the city to show his support for the community. This would really backfire the original inspector’s bullying tactics and it would be viewed as a great thing for the community for his customers and neighbors. By doing the right thing, Dalman is sending a huge message to his employees, customers and the community. He could even use it as an opportunity to get some positive publicity showing the community that he is doing everything in his power to comply with the new law. He could even hire some of the local displace persons from a previous assignment to do the work of moving the enclosure so it is in compliance. Again, this would send a positive message to the community and his support for it. It would be totally unethical for Dalman to allow the inspector’s offer to be accepted. This could heavily backfire on his business. There is no guarantee that the inspector would approve the structure as it is even if they would provide the holiday food. The inspector is behaving in an illegal manner and needs to be reported. He is probably making similar offers to other businesses as well. Therefore, it is my strongest recommendation for Dalman to consult with his legal counsel and then report the inspector’s behavior while at the same time looking for ways to comply with the new law.…...

Honesty, Integrity and Trust in Leadership

...Honesty, Integrity and Trust in Leadership December 08, 2008   Recently upper management of the Indiana University Information Technology Services Department (UITS), Finance Office Staff called a departmental meeting to discuss the results of an employee job satisfaction survey the was taken approximately nine months earlier by the employees of UITS. We had received hints, from our manager, during our last workgroup meeting that upper management was quite shocked at the results of the survey concerning the attitudes of the employees of our work area. Upper management was upset with the survey results that alluded to the fact that the employees didn’t trust management. Christine Casey Cooper states that surveys reveal that only 40% of employees trust what management tells them” (Cooper, 2008). Management at UITS has as a whole has created an atmosphere of distrust in our department. Upper management has created distrust by withholding information and/or restricting the downward flow of communication through our organization. Like the white house they prefer to “leak” information thru the grapevine than have open communication. “According to studies, the accuracy of “grapevine” information is 78 to 90 percent accurate. Gordon Allport and Leo Postman report that when the “grapevine” information is erroneous and cannot be verified, the results are often dramatic.” (Hanna & Wilson, 1998, p. 36). While this information is being leaked through the grapevine......

Integrity

...Integrity is found in a person who acts right even though he knows that he can be more benefited by doing wrong. A person with integrity is a person with honor. But this does not necessarily mean that he must always be right. Instead, his action must conform to what is right legally and morally. Integrity allows other people to trust us because they know that we value our commitments to them. Honesty and truthfulness are things that a person with integrity should possess. He must be honest and true not only to himself but to all the people around him. He should do right things even if there is no one around to see. Most of the time, he did things for the goodness and sake of the people around him or people that are not even related to him that was in need.   Doing righteous things is very important. Because here, we not only follow our conscience but we follow the teachings of God. This is the ethic that brings a person to success. It also makes a person with honor and integrity and helps him to be a better and happier person. It is one of the cornerstones of loving relationships and common deeds. Ara Cheska D. Famatigan L3B-Legmeth “INTEGRITY” Integrity means being true to ourselves. It is usually a value of a person to know what is right and wrong acts. If we are honest with ourselves, we can also be honest with others. Integrity is the criteria for us if we have reputation and self-respect. Honesty can help us build a trust with others. Ethics, Integrity and Law Enforcement Leadership

...Ethics, Integrity and Law Enforcement Leadership As Americans, we have the freedom to for the most part, go where we desire, see who we care to see and to be safe while we conduct our daily lives. We can do this because there are laws that are set up or enacted, meticulously regulated and rigidly enforced. These laws allow law-abiding people on American soil to enjoy an amount of personal freedom that is envied by the vast majority of other nations. The laws that are in place are enforced by police officers who are visible in plain sight as a sort of deterrent to attempt to prevent the violation of laws before they happen. The backbone to being able to exercise these freedoms is derived from the protection given to us by law enforcement officials. This is one of the reasons why police officers and other law enforcement personnel are viewed with respect for the most part. There is however a darker side that is always lingering in the back of our minds when we think of officers. This more obscure side conjures up memories of years of corruption, authority abuse, human rights violations and the feared blind eye. It has been a priority to many chiefs of police and county sheriffs to erase this image and to attempt to restore trust among the suspicious American people. Many law enforcement agencies are enforcing standards and investigating reported discrepancies. One thing that is for sure is that for trust to be restored, we must have officers with good ethics and integrity......

Integrity

...Integrity Essay Integrity, the antonym is dishonesty and the synonym is honor. This paints a fairly clear picture within these two words. Honesty is a pure ethical principle through which a person can earn respect and honor. Respect and honor from others helps build lasting personal and business relationships, which leads to long-term success. Ethics and success are deeply linked. Ethics are the foundation on which long-term success is built. Integrity is defined as the adherence to moral and ethical principles. Integrity is, therefore, the result of strong ethics. It is a quality I strive to uphold. Since I was little, integrity was not something merely encouraged by my family, it was expected. Honesty was the only policy and responsibility was something to be demonstrated daily. My family has not only encouraged, but demanded that I grow to be an ethical young woman. I am grateful for my parents’ high standards and good example because it has laid the foundation for my success in and out of the classroom. My father was part of a committee to formulate the guiding principles of his company. They wrote this statement as a cornerstone for their business: “We will demand honesty and integrity in everything we do.” Beneath this statement they included a “Why this is important?” clause that states “By consistently doing the right thing with conviction, candor, compassion, and courage, we will earn and keep the respect of our clients and......

Academic Integrity

...Academic integrity within education is considered one of the most important aspects in the review of literature. It refers to the use of knowledge, which needs to reflect transparency, morality as well as honesty (International Centre for Academic Integrity, 1999). As Drinan and Gallant et. al, (2008) mentioned the ‘Rule Compliance Strategy (RCS)’ is one of the most popular strategic ways to stop plagiarism. In RCS, plagiarism is bordered as a ‘criminal’ action and thus, all writers have to apply these rules and acknowledge that the work material belongs to other individuals. Failure to comply with the rules would result implications and actions. According to Hayes and Introna (2005), Western countries with English as a national language and in particular, the United Kingdom has been the first choice for international students who wish to study abroad. Many authors have witnessed that students from abroad and, especially from the East, have a different method of learning and is contradictory with the Western approach. However, the reality is that academic work and values are currently in challenge due to the effect of globalization (Peter, 2003). The rapid growth of technology in a global level has introduced a new way of knowledge, the e-learning. The high-tech, easy, online access to important information has eroded the traditional academic values and the appeal for higher education as well as science has been replaced with technology and its application. Academic......

Integrity

...Student Integrity For one of my classes, I have found a website that provides free flashcards with a question or term on the front and when you click the card, the answers are on the back. I have been using this site since I started my courses for studying purposes. One week, I could not find the right information for that particular module on the website. Hoping to find a different study method, I typed in my course name, the week and the topic into Google’s search engine. When I hit the search button, I was actually quite surprised at what came up. Right there in front of me, I saw numerous websites with the actual quiz and quiz answers; some you had to pay for but some were free. I thought to myself, it is not a forum or a summary, its simply true or false answers; how would someone know if I cheated? I know what you are thinking, and no, I did not look at the quiz. This goes to show how easy it is to cheat, I was not trying to cheat but the opportunity, literally, popped up in front of me. Technology in our generation is getting so complex, so fast that I can’t even keep up with it. In this generation, it is so easy for students to fall victim to plagiarism in the simplicity of technology, but in some results, technology has also made it easier to avoid the incident and help professors catch it after being done. In “Instructing Student’s in Academic Integrity” they discuss why and how students cheat, methods they use in attempt to control plagiarism and the results......

Integrity

...Final Essay * Integrity * * Integrity is a personal characteristic that should be considered as the most important characteristic of a person. A person who has strong ideas, and strong moral values, but who does not have integrity might stray in the wrong direction if they cannot support their ideas. A person with integrity will not fold under pressure and will stand to defend his views regardless of the situation. * Integrity is considered a contract with yourself. If you make a decision to support an idea or belief, that contract with yourself, integrity, will keep you on a constant and steady path to support and defend your ideal. As described by Damian Cox :“A related approach to integrity is to think of it primarily in terms of a person's holding steadfastly true to their commitments”. This commitment will present your integrity on the subject and will earn you the respect of everyone even those who oppose your views. A commitment of integrity to yourself could be the most important commitment you can make in your life. For example a commitment to quit smoking, start exercising or finish college would build your character not only towards others but most importantly towards yourself. * In today’s world there are many ways integrity can be attacked. With the development of social media, every person’s integrity is subject to scrutiny and challenge. In the same manner one can use social media outlets to demonstrate your integrity by presenting......

Academic Integrity

...Introduction “Are students’ perceptions of academic integrity the same in the online environment as they are in the classroom?” (Swartz & Cole. Journal of Business and Education Leadership. Pg. 102) With so many more business students taking courses online, instructors and institutions have to trust that the students are being trustworthy. It also needs to be determined as to what constitutes cheating and what is acceptable. After studying online business course students – in regards to academic integrity – it seems that the use of technological advances needs to be evaluated in the online setting as well as the classroom as to whether it is acceptable for use or considered cheating. Summary What is academic integrity? “It is the professional code serving academia, including students, instructors, researchers and the institution itself.” (Swartz & Cole. Journal of Business and Education Leadership. Pg. 104) A study was done at Robert Morris University in Western Pennsylvania to determine what students felt was acceptable in both online learning and the actual classroom, how easy it was to cheat, and what could be done to discourage it more. “As a recent experience at Harvard demonstrates, maintaining academic integrity is a problem in the classroom as well as in the online setting.” (Swartz & Cole. Journal of Business and Education Leadership. Pg. 103) Students from several business courses with differing demographics were surveyed. The goal of the study was to......

Integrity

...Academic Integrity; a Responsibility for All Introduction Tricia Bertram Gallant believes “an academic integrity movement is afoot in postsecondary education institutions in the U.S. and Canada” (Gallant, T., 2008). She acknowledges academic integrity should not be taken lightly and therefore proposes a new practice of ensuring students are properly taught about academic integrity. Academic integrity is the cornerstone for any institution of higher learning. It sets the foundation for the solid work that is to be expected once a job has been landed. It is the precedence for responsibility, honesty, and good old fashion hard work. Academic integrity brings respect to the work of others and ensures the act of fairness within an institution. Universities have gone to great lengths to protect their institutions and students from violations and violators of academic integrity. It can only take one minute to destroy integrity, so a student must understand the importance of academic integrity and how it effects them academically and professionally. In this, paper I will attempt to define and discuss the importance of academic integrity for an institution and the individual student. I will also discuss the responsibilities of the institution and the student as they relate to academic integrity. And finally, I will give examples of common violations of academic integrity. What is Academic Integrity and its Importance? According to Michigan State University,......

Integrity in a Manager

...Integrity in a Manager Linda Tualla MGT230 Karen Hatfield November 7, 2011 Integrity in a Manager It is often quoted “talent will get you in the door,” but the character is what allows you to remain. Fine professional values and solid ethical behavior encourage the building of a person’s character, which directly affects his or her career success. One such valuable attribute of our character is integrity. Integrity is essential to an excellent manager. Integrity is defined as “a quality of character requiring honesty and courage, a virtue necessary for trust, the most important quality desired in a leader” (Manning & Curtis, 2007, p. 398). When asked about their favorite manager, many people will agree on the traits that define integrity. Two primary responsibilities as managers are managing department functions and managing people. Balancing the two can already be difficult, but the major challenge would have to be managing the workforce. Employees look to managers for guidance, honest feedback, and leadership. Managers who guide with integrity give performance reviews with sincerity, honesty, and directness when providing feedback to their employees. Someone who conducts regular performance evaluations is considered someone who devotes the time to review employee performances on-the-job to prepare an objective and truthful evaluation. This manager is sincere with his or her employees about their strengths...

Integrity

...Integrity Paper Most of us know at least one person of integrity. We all have knowledge of it but we define it on so many different levels. I recently read, Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality, by Dr. Henry Cloud in which he posits wisdom that not many could. He defines integrity as being the courage to meet the demands of reality. Dr. Cloud’s book is appropriate and consults with many large companies just as it would a local book club. Dr. Cloud considerately examines integrity and how it should be implemented to avoid unnecessary business challenges that may arise. In this book, he classifies six areas of character and qualities that he believes creates integrity. He posits that people with integrity have the capability to do the following: 1.) Creates and maintains trust 2.) Is able to see and face reality 3.) Works in a way that bring results 4.) Embraces negative realities and solves them 5.) Causes growth and increase 6.) Achieves transcendence and meaning in life. Having lack of knowledge and uncertainty of one particular element can definitely lead to a company’s nonperformance. The disparity in anyone who lacks the fullness of character is only bound to end in failing in three specific ways as Dr. Cloud stated, “1. Hitting a performance ceiling that is much lower than one’s aptitude 2. Hitting an obstacle or situation that derails you 3. Reaching great success only to self-destruct and lose it all” (pg.......

Integrity

...Integrity Essay by Mr. X Integrity is probably the most important value any person needs to have. People do not like to follow leaders, who preach one thing but do another. When talking about the working place this value is extremely essential since nobody would like to work with somebody that lacks integrity. I have witness Soldiers in my current job which are a prime example of a Soldier who integrity level is pretty low. I had a sergeant assigned to my section which decided to go out and have some drinks with another Soldier which was new in the army and he was pretty young and inexperienced in a lot of things, the army life was new to him, after having a few drinks, neither of them were in a condition to drive, however the sergeant allowed the Soldier to drive and as result of his action the Soldier received a DUI, and eventually he end up receiving a GOMOR from a two stars general, which pretty much will put a stop to his career. However the next day when the command sergeant major interview the sergeant to find out the facts about the accident, the sergeant tried to the denied of his presence during the incident. This as you can imagine brought the moral pretty low to his platoon since the Soldier realized what kind of leader he in reality was. He had not integrity as a Soldier, as a person and as a leader, eventually he end up getting a letter of reprimand from the brigade commander and as you can imagine the Soldier did not showed any kind of respect toward......

Business with Integrity

...Business with Integrity Examination & its Application During spring term 2012, I read Business with Integrity in its entirety. According to a professor of social theory, “Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. In ethics, integrity is regarded as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one's actions. Integrity can be regarded as the opposite of hypocrisy” . The laws of the universe, with their many complex, intricate designs created by the Father’s will, are built entirely on their foundations of integrity. And they cannot falter. If one member, one iota, of the laws of physical science fell off its pedestal of what is built around it as trust, catastrophes of immense, complete destruction would ensue. Luckily men are to not be held up to these standards of exactness and consistency. It is a good thing the Lord has not made our flaws as detrimental as that of the elements of physics or upheld to the integrity of our perfected Lord Jesus Christ. We are provided a snippet of time and allowed leniency; may I show the same mercy to others. In my examination of integrity, I tend to have my mind focused on the method of integrity and how to apply it towards my brothers and sisters of the world. While I was reading the foreword, some things struck me to the bone, words of enlightenment that I will have framed and mounted on a wall in my home. A quote by President Harold B. Lee described courage,......
