Interlingue Occidental does not contain invented words, but has a natural appearance. So, the first desideratum is naturalness, and this implies that the language must be based on the thousands of international words already in existence. Interlingue Occidental has incorporated, practically as they stand, the many words that are common property of a number of different languages. It has been calculated that 38% of the words in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German are the same. This yields more than 10,000 words which can be understood at sight by most literate peoples. The early authors of an international language, unable to embody these words in a simple system, either deformed them out of all recognition, or largely rejected them. But the problem was solved when Professor Edgar de Wahl, a scholar of Reval (Estonia), succeeded in regularising this international vocabulary. His solution, INTERLINGUE, or OCCIDENTAL, combines regularity with naturalness so ingeniously that we feel we are reading and writing an ethnical tongue. Here are a few of its words: avi-e bird avi-ar to fly avi-on aeroplane avi-ator avi-ation avi-atica naviga-r to navigate naviga-tion naviga-tor naviga-bil naviga-bil-ita circum-naviga-tion medi-e middle medi-ar to mediate medi-ation medi-ator medi-al medi-an, etc. PRONUNCIATION. Vowels: a, e, i, o, u = continental, all sounded; y (initial and medial) as in yes; ey (final) as in they; eu as éh-oo. Consonants: as in English, except c when before e and i = ts: cive = tseevay, helice = heleetsay; g when before e and i = French j or English s in pleasure: plage, giraffe; but elsewhere c and g are hard as in can, go; ss as in pass; s between vowels = z: rose, positiv; z = ds; ch = English sh: chambre. STRESS. This falls on the vowel preceding the last consonant: finAle, lIngue, papEr and before the syllabes -um, -bil, -ic, -ul, -im: Ultim, hAbil, cInic, rEgul, cIrcum, Album.
The ending -men is also unstressed: fOrtmen. Exceptions to these rules bear an accent mark: númere, idé, víper. ARTICLES.
The = li; a, an = un. ADJECTIVES.
Invariable: Li long, interessant lettres. PLURAL.
After a vowel -s, after consonants -es (li boas e li leones). PERSONAL PRONOUNS:
I - me = yo - me
We - us = noi - nos
Thou - thee = tu - te
You = vu - vos
He - him = il - le
She - her = ella - la
It = it
They - them = ili - les
One (indefinite) = on POSSESIVE: mi nor tui vor, vostri su su su lor THE VERB Infinitive: by r: ama-r, fini-r, vide-r (amar, finir, vider in usage) Present tense: the simple root, i.e. remove the -r.: yo ama, il fini, noi vide. Past tense: add t: yo ama-t, il fini-t, noi vide-t (yo amat, il finit, noi videt) Compound: yo ha amat, il ha finit, hoi hat videt. Future: by va and the infinitive: il va amar, il va vider, il va finir. Conditional: by vell and the infinitive: noi vell visitar, il vell finir Imperative: the present tense, or ples with infinitive: Fini! Ples finir! That's it. All you need to know to begin using OCCIDENTAL immediately. We need an internatioal language and INTERLINGUE OCCIDENTAL - satisfies the need.…...

Case of the Pricing Predicament

...Standard Machine needs to determine how valuable Occidental Aerospace is to their business. Would it be more costly to lose their business, or would they lose more money in the long run by trying to maintain a customer relationship? If it's determined that it is beneficial to keep Occidental, Standard should conduct further market research to determine if their price is competitive and of fair market value. The sales market is ever changing and its crucial to maintain competitive prices in order to remain in business. It is imperative to maintain an open dialogue with Occidental. Do they feel Standard's product is the same or better when compared to the competition. What differentiates Standard's product versus its competitors? Does Standard's product offer more add-ons such as a product warranty, free installation, and customer equipment training that the competitor does not offer? If so, then Standard could negotiate a price. However, if Occidental considers their product to be equal to that of the competition but are choosing Standard out of customer loyalty, then it behooves Standard to lower their price to the amount requested to maintain that loyalty. This does not mean that Standard should concede every time they disagree on a bid, especially if they begin to lose money. If that's the case then Standard should consider severing ties with Occidental all together. Standard could negotiate a contract with Occidental which offers their product for a......

Occidental Petroleum and Valero Energy Corporations

...Occidental Petroleum and Valero Energy Corporations Columbia College Introduction Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) and Valero Energy Corporation (Valero) are both international oil and gas companies, with Valero also specializing in marketing of transportation fuels, petrochemical products, and power. Each company has made an international footprint on the earth by extracting billions of gallons of oil and petroleum products worldwide. Oxy was founded in California in 1920, but did not make its first major discovery until 1961. It began operations in the Middle East over 40 years ago, which now accounts for more than one third of its production. In 1983, Oxy opened additional operations in Latin America. Since then, more than one billion barrels of oil have been produced at its Caño Limón location in Columbia. Today, nearly two-thirds of its production comes from the United States, with specific operations located in California, Colorado, Kansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas (Occidental Highlights, 2013). Valero was created in 1980 and is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. In 1997, it began adding more refineries and today stands at a total of 16. Valero expanded into the retail and wholesale markets and now supplies 7,300 outlets, to include the brands of Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock and Beacon, Ultramar, and Texaco in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland (Valero History, 2013). Standard Machine

...Scott, the salesman for Standard Machine, has just received a call from Joann, the purchasing agent for Occidental Aerospace. Occidental has been one of Standard’s largest and most loyal accounts. Following Standard’s fixed price policy, Scott submitted his bid at list price, $429K. Now Joann has called to inform Scott that his bid was not good enough. She told him that one other competitor had bid “under $390K” and another “a little over $400K”. She tells Scott that to win this business; he needs to cut his price by an additional $22K. Although this bid is only for one piece of equipment, Joann reminds Scott that the company will be building two new plants over the next four years, representing “a lot of potential business.” Scott has gone to his boss Tony, the sales manager, to ask for an exception to the fixed price policy. Why do you think Standard Machine is in this difficult situation with what was previously a loyal customer? What has changed? What would you do? Occidental Aerospace it seems has recently changed to a competitive bid process. This has changed the dynamics of Standards relationship with Occidental. Occidental in reality views the purchase of the equipment as a purchase of a commodity when in reality it is the purchase of equipment and services. The machine tool industry has not seen alot of change in the last couple of decades the rise of the internet and global marketing has enable customers to shop worldwide for these types of machines at......

...Predicament This case is about a bid from Scott at Standard Machine to Occidental Aerospace, their largest and most loyal account. Scott placed a bid for $429K. Joann is the purchasing agent at Occidental Aerospace. Joann notified Scott she had received lower bids and offered him a chance to change his bid to $22k less than his original bid. Joann also reminded him they would be building two more plants which could be more potential business. Standard Machine uses a fixed policy for bids. It appears that Occidental Aerospace wants to continue doing business with Standard Machine which is why they are giving them a chance to submit a new bid. I believe the main reason Standard Machine is in this difficult situation is because they are sticking to a fixed pricing policy. In order to beat the competition and keep the relationship with Occidental Aerospace, they need to figure out a different pricing strategy. Another reason they may be in this situation is the fact Occidental Aerospace is giving information out regarding bids by other competitors. This could be considered a violation of ethics. Standard Machine also does not know if this “inside” information is accurate or not. Joann could just be giving false information to get a lower bid and still keep the relationship between them and Standard Machine. As far as what has changed in the business relationship between Standard Machine and Occidental Aerospace, competition has increased and better pricing. In order to......

...As everyone knows, Occidental prefer go Dutch while having a meal in the restaurant and they don’t often entertain guests. But in China, people usually pay the bill and check out generously or often invite friend to dinner. A lot of Occidentals feel puzzled to this question. Such a difference can be resulted from the East and West culture and custom. First of all, food systems between China and Occident are different. Chinese put into practice Gather Dining System; Occidentals put into practice Individual Dining System. Everybody can share the delicious food of all over the table when eating Chinese food, but Occidentals just eat the food in one’s own plate. That’s impossible for sharing under the Individual Dining System. Secondly, Occidentals eat for the health; Chinese eat for the friendship. Westerners advocate individualism and independence and it is a way to express that respect for each other’s independence through go Dutch. Chinese like making friends and solidarity, they value the interpersonal relationships and friendship very much. Therefore, friend’s position is important in Chinese’s mind. The purpose that Chinese don’t go Dutch is doesn’t want to destroy the friendship between the friends. Dutch treatment is the stingy behavior in China, is unfavorable to the friends’ solidarity and is unfavorable to keeping the harmonious interpersonal relationship. Third, it is only simple “Have a meal!” that Occidental entertain guests. It is not purpose that Chinese......

Oxy V. Vlo

...Purchase Comparison Of Occidental Petroleum(OXY) Versus Valero Energy(VLO) Bradley Holbrook Columbia College, Finance 350 When deciding between which two companies’ stocks or, from a corporate standpoint, to acquire, there are a multitude of aspects and ratios in which to utilize to determine the better buy. For the sake of time and space three are used in this comparison: book value per share, current ratio, and the profit margin on sales. Based on the following comparison of Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Valero Energy (VLO), we will determine which is the stronger company of the two and which is worth spending money on for shares or acquiring.. Total common stock’s equity | Number of common shares outstanding | The first ratio used to compare the two is the book value per share. There are two ways that I’ve found to determine the book value, or net worth. One way is to “take everything that the firm owns and subtract the debt and preferred stock obligation.” (Block, 2014) The second way is to take the total common stock’s equity and divide it by the number of common shares outstanding, ( so that if you wrote it down it would look like: Book Value= | According to the 10-K Form filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2013 for Occidental Petroleum the common stock’s equity was $43.372 billion and the number of common shares outstanding was 794,747,955 shares. With the math done, OXY has a book value of over $54.57......

...THE CASE OF THE PRICING PREDICAMENT Cost-cutting customers. Hungry Foreign rivals. Should Standard Machine Lowerits bid? By MARY KARR As soon a Scott Palmer’s secretary told him that Joanne Braker form Occidental Aerospace was on the phone, he knew he was in for a long day. Inheriting the Occidental account had helped him earn top sales commissions last year, his first at Standard Machine Corporation. But a month ago, Joanne informed Scott of the purchasing department’s new, more aggressive competitive bid policy, and said it would apply to the acquisition of a computerized milling machine for Occidental’s new training center. Scott nevertheless submitted his $429,000 proposal with great confidence and even boasted to his regional sales manager that the deal was “in the bag”. After two weeks of unreturned phone calls, however, Scott got the feeling his confidence had been sorely misplaced. “Hi, Joanne, Long time, no hear. What’s up?” Joanne got right to the point. “Scott, I’ve got a $22,000 problem you can solve”. “What do you mean?” “You know we have to look hard at a number of different vendors on purchases of this size. And your bid is well above the competition’s. Kakuchi came in under $390,000, and Akita Limited at a little over 400K”. She waited, and Scott waited back, not wanting to show his anxiousness. “The way I count it,” she finally continued, “You’re $22,000 too high, and I just can’t sell that here”. “Well, Joanne,......
