Microsoft-Intuit Synergy Case Report

...Microsoft/Intuit Synergies There is a great deal of synergy between the Microsoft and Intuit that would be beneficial for Microsoft if an acquisition were to take place. Intuit’s position in the personal finance market would lend a considerable benefit to Microsoft given their difficulty in that market. Microsoft would also be able to take advantage of the similarity in their products and use their considerable marketing advantages to enhance the revenue created by Intuit. In 1994, Bill Gates envisioned an emerging future market as an online marketplace to handle consumer needs. In order for Microsoft to develop its capability to control its own destiny in online entertainment and commerce, it needed to acquire additional core competencies of “cable and/or telephone networks, on-line networks, electronic shopping networks, video on demand, and business networks.” Microsoft needed to evaluate what competencies would be developed in house and which would be acquired in an effort to most efficiently use its human resources and financial assets. With Gate’s vision of the future online consumer, Intuit’s product line could be a great benefit to Microsoft being able to position them as a leader in that market. In terms of market share in the personal finance/checkbook software market, Intuit had a 69% share in units and an 85% share in value. This is in comparison to a 22% and 7% share for Microsoft respectively. Bill Gate’s vision of the future relies heavily on personal......

Intuit

...Kelli Uhlberg 9/10/2013 EEE 451 Case 2: Intuit 1.)Your textbook on page 19 makes a reference to the fact that most entrepreneurs learn about cash flow, marketing, human resources after they have those problems. Comment on how Scott Cook seemed to address these issues? Cash flow, marketing, and human resources are arguably the three most important parts of building a business, and are often lessons business owners misunderstand in the real world. It should be blatantly obvious that these three concepts are cyclic and rely on one another to survive. It seems that Scott Cook saw how each aspect of business owning relied on the other and how all three components needed to work together to truly see fiscal results. Marketing strategies utilize cash flow and generate more, human resources are selling points in marketing strategies, strong human resources build customer loyalties and keep cash flow steady, etc. Scott understood that entering into an actual business wasn’t going to be the perfect scenario like textbooks. He needed to master and balance those three components to survive. Cash flow is a huge obstacle for most businesses. On page 20 of our Entrepreneurial Finance textbook explains, “ The area in which they [unsuccessful entrepreneurs] lacked the most training was cash flow management”. Cook handled his start up professionally and didn’t allow failed venture capital pursuits put him down. He resourced himself to fund the project. He knew how much money......

...CASE STUDY 2 I. THE ARALIN TEACHER Mrs. Boots De Vola was assigned to teach the first section in third year level. She assumed that she is an effective and efficient teacher in Araling Panlipunan because of that. There are many teachers qualified and much deserving to teach the star section. Now, the students are complaining of the expenses regarding projects, special projects and the way she behave in classroom. II. HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF THE FACTS Mrs. Boots De Vola have underwent the process of being LSB teacher, PSB teacher, before she was declared as regular teacher in Banana National High School. It has been five years that she handled Aralin in section one. There are congruency on each year complaint but since the students are afraid of failing her subject they remained quiet. I seldom hear news about her projects and the money she collected from her advisory class. Every single mistake has an specified amount to be collected as fine, but the students don’t know where these money will be spent. Another concern about Mrs. Boots De Vola is the way she handled and treated her students. She always nag and shout to students, for her it’s the way of disciplining her students. Some of the students chose to dropped schooling because they felt being degraded and they do not have money for everyday fine. Lately, a mother asked her about the special project of her son amounting one hundred thirty pesos. The project was properly discussed, but we found out that......

Intuit Case Study

...1. How would I align the team to execute? a. Team building: I would first identify who my resources are from each functional area. I would set up a brief face to face meeting (if possible) with each resource and introduce myself. I would informally let them know that they can expect to receive a kick- off meeting invite from me to discuss what is needed to complete a renewal quote for the 2016 Tax Year. b. I would also ask the team member to discuss with me any pitfalls/ pain points (lessons learned) experienced from last year’s launch and document their concerns/feedback. I would encourage them to bring any additional pain point topics to the kick-off meeting. My Second highest priority would be to meet with the finance, sales and marketing teams to obtain historical data such as: 1. Prior year sales data, marketing initiatives, revenue targets, and costs (in essence I want to understand the money factor and goals desired) What is the overall budget and Gross Profit trends and what is desired. 2. I would find out if there is any forecast data available that I can review 3. It would also be important for me to see what I can gather from the Care and Operations team on consumer feed back what went well… what were this issues ( this is important to me because consumer satisfaction/dissatisfaction has a cost associated with it and can have an impact to our bottom line and how we price our product offerings....

Microsoft/Intuit

...9-295-121 REV: NOVEMBER 6, 2001 Microsoft/Intuit The Decision In the fall of 1994 William Gates, chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corp., was considering the possible acquisition of Intuit Corp. Intuit marketed the leading personal finance software product called Quicken. Two years earlier Gates had met with Scott Cook, chairman of Intuit, to discuss the possibility of completing an acquisition. In the interim, Cook had further consolidated Intuit’s domination of the personal financial software market with the acquisition of a firm which marketed the best-selling personal income tax preparation software called Turbo Tax, and the acquisition of a firm which provided electronic bill-payment services. Intuit was known in the software applications industry as one of the few firms that had met a challenge from Microsoft in its own market niche and won. Other firms that had once dominated their market niches in word processing programs (WordPerfect) and spreadsheet programs (Lotus), for example, had been shouldered aside by Microsoft (Exhibit 1). Many firms were being acquired as the industry consolidated. Indeed, in March 1994 Novell announced that it was acquiring privately owned WordPerfect Corp.1 (which held the second-largest share of the word processing software market), and the spreadsheet business of Borland International (Quattro Pro held the thirdlargest position in spreadsheet software) in order to put together a suite of common applications to compete......

FPL Group was then engaged in a number of businesses unrelated to its core electric skills, including insurance and financial services, real estate, cable television, and agriculture. The company's principal subsidiary, Florida Power and Light, was considered a well-managed utility with an emphasis on quality. However, the utility's spiraling costs had resulted in electric rates among the highest in the Southeast. ...Cisco Case Study Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) is an American multinational corporation headquartered in San Jose, California, United States, that designs and sells consumer electronics, networking, voice, and communications technology and services. Founded by Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, a married couple who worked as computer operations staff members at Stanford University, along with Nicholas Pham, founded Cisco Systems in 1984. For the first time in a decade Cisco experienced its first negative quarter in 2001. The loss of earnings was due to the economic down.
