Communication Development Plan
Introduction
The fundamental foundation in the Leadership Communication textbook is that “effective leadership depends on effective communication” (Barrett, 2014, p. 4). Without effective communication, leaders accomplish little (Barrett, 2014, p. 4). The lack of communication from a leader, makes him or her not a leader (Barrett, 2014, p. 4). Mastering communication for leadership allows for leaders to move into leadership positions and lead a group to a common goal (Barrett, 2014, p. 5). Effective leadership communication requires the leader to anticipate, transmit, appreciate, understand, and craft messages to reach the wanted recipient as intended (Barrett, 2014, p. 7).
Current Assessment
Leadership Communication Ethos/Image Based off of the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities, my leadership communication regarding ethos and image are acceptable, but could be worked on as I scored a 3.5/5.0 (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). This result showed me that my strengths were in relation to my understanding of how people viewed me and my willingness to improve. I am aware of myself enough to see how me leadership style is and how it affects others. But my weaknesses could hinder this, as I do not like to ask for opinions of my style and I lack confidence (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities).
Audience Analysis and Strategy
My Audience Analysis and Strategy was one of my lowest scores, scoring a 3.0/5.0 (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). This score shows that I need work on these capabilities and that it can affect my communication, especially with individuals I am not as close to. Analyzing and reading an audience while assessing the situation, are all cases I will need to improve on in order for good outcomes when communicating as a leader to diverse audiences (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities).
Social Media & Written Communication Results regarding social media and written communication from the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities, are very good abilities, as I scored a 3.71/5.0. This was not a surprise to me as my generation is very comfortable with social media and written communication. They are especially comfortable in this if they have a generous amount of education in their background and use it daily. My formatting and organization of these types of communication, I feel are ranked high and are strengths of mine (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). Practice from previous and current education and the professional world back this up.
Oral Communication
Oral Communication is another capability I feel I am strong in considering my lack of experience in it. As I have constantly talked to small and large groups of people on a daily basis for the last couple of years, it was assessed that this experienced allowed me to score high, with a 3.54/5.0 result (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). I still feel the need to improve, especially in my impromptu presentation skills, because if I feel uncomfortable because of a lack of preparedness, my presentation skills can easily lack.
Visual Communication
An assessment result I felt was mission critical for me was the internal communication capability (Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities). This was the lowest score for me and I feel like it is so because of a lack of experience. To improve my visual communication, I need to act as if my current educational demonstrations are actually for an employer or a business presentation, which may allow me to gain feedback and to know what I can improve upon.
Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence when dealing with others and with my own feelings, could both use some improvement as measured by the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities as well as the Emotional Intelligence Assessment. Understanding and controlling my feelings, as well as expressing these feelings to others can allow for an openness in communication and potential barriers when it comes to communication leadership. Understanding others and how they react to specific forms of communication is also key when a leader wants a follower to obey and understand them.
Diversity and Intercultural Communication It surprised me that I felt somewhat confident in this area, but I do feel as that I can become more versed in these cultures and with the people who make up diversity in my office. I scored a 3.5/5.0 on this capability of the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities. Understanding is different than appreciating diverse individuals and what they bring to the office. This is something I need to work on, as well as the organization I currently work for. Diversity is growing in my office and within my employer, so a better understanding and appreciation will be important moving forward for me as well as my office.
Organizational Communication Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities measured my organizational communication capability a 3.65/5.0, rating it at acceptable, but could still use some improvement and I agree. I consider this assessment a strength of mine, but I do understand the impact that improvement of this capability can make on my leadership communication abilities. Being able to be recognized by peers for good leadership communication skills is a goal of mine.
Internal Communication & Transformational Leadership
An area that I need to work on and develop quickly is internal communication, based on the Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities, as I scored a 2.8/5.0. I tend to assume at times and this can cause conflict. I also have a hard time approaching individuals I may not know as well or have a close work relationship with. This is mainly toward superiors as their “power” affects my confidence, especially now since my new superior and I are not known to each other well as it is a busy time in the office.
External Corporate Communication The Self-Assessment of Leadership Communication Capabilities scored me as a 3.5/5.0 on the external communication ability. Strengths with this include, communicating with the external partners as well as media third parties that support my organization. It is also safe to say that experience can help with improvements, as in my current position I do not deal with external partners too often.
Group and Team Dynamics
Out of the two factors that I scored low on within the DiSC Assessment, I feel as if the most important one to grow in is Influence. This is because in order to lead and lead effectively, I must have more of an influence on my peers, co-workers, and subordinates. I must have this in order to be more social and get to know these individuals within my office so I can help them and lead them to the best of my abilities.
I understand that I am more reserved than others, but I feel as if I have already grown tremendously in this area of becoming more social, being able to public speak, and reaching out first as peers I have worked with have noted a positive growth with my influence factor. This assessment has shown me though that I need to continue to improve on this as influence is power and power will help me get to where I want to be as a leader in the near future.
Communication Improvement Goals I have chosen three areas in which I plan to improve my communication competencies: audience analysis and strategy, oral communication, and internal communication. My goals for improving these areas are as follows: 1. I will improve my audience analysis skills, which includes, reading the audience and understanding the correct communication response in the next year.
-------------------------------------------------
IS THIS A SMART GOAL?
-------------------------------------------------
Specific – To improve analysis and observation skills
-------------------------------------------------
Measurable – to be able to read individuals specifically
-------------------------------------------------
Attainable – yes, experience and practice is needed
-------------------------------------------------
Realistic – yes, this is something I am capable of because of my support system
-------------------------------------------------
Time limited – yes, I will set a one year time frame to accomplish this 2. I will improve my oral communication through public speaking and impromptu speeches over the next 6 months to a level that I feel comfortable speaking in front of a large group made up of all ages.
-------------------------------------------------
IS THIS A SMART GOAL?
-------------------------------------------------
Specific – To improve presentation skills to large audiences
-------------------------------------------------
Measurable – to be able to present more comfortably and professionally
-------------------------------------------------
Attainable – yes, experience and practice is needed
-------------------------------------------------
Realistic – yes, this is something I am capable of because of my support system
-------------------------------------------------
Time limited – yes, I will set a six month time frame to accomplish this

3. I will improve my internal communication capability by actively participating in events, meeting new people, stepping out of my comfort zone. I plan to see vast improvement in one year.
-------------------------------------------------
IS THIS A SMART GOAL?
-------------------------------------------------
Specific – To step out of comfort zone and develop internal relationships
-------------------------------------------------
Measurable – to be able to have a clear communication plan internally
-------------------------------------------------
Attainable – yes, experience and practice is needed
-------------------------------------------------
Realistic – yes, this is something I am capable of because of my support system
-------------------------------------------------
Time limited – yes, I will set a one year time frame to accomplish this

Actions to Achieve Goals I will continue to improve my analyzation of audiences by finding a mentor within my office to give examples and explanations of specific occurrences that he or she has had to deal with and overcome over their professional career. I will also continue to ask many questions before answering in tense situations or unknown situations, in order for me to give the correct response. I will also start to listen more instead of listening to respond, as that can make me really miss what the person is actually saying. I will improve my oral communication by continuing to give public presentations for my current position, as well as to my peers. Having my peers see my presentations will allow for feedback in areas to improve, as well as answering questionnaires I give to them before the presentation. Again, experience in practice is one way that I improve amongst many things. Also giving the audience feedback questionnaires will allow for even more useful feedback. To improve upon my internal communication, stepping out of my comfort zone is needed. Joining more committees and professional development groups, as well as leading team projects and volunteering will allow me to grow professionally in this area. Making connections within my organization can help in the long run and allow for a better communication setting within my office.
Measurement
In order to measure whether or not I achieved my SMART goals listed above, in the time frame stated, peers will be needed. For all my mentioned improvement capabilities, I will need peers to evaluate me during each given scenario. For my oral communication improvement, I will need them to evaluate me giving a presentation to a large audience off campus. I will provide an evaluation checklist to use during the evaluation, so that I may see where I measure in the areas is specifically wanted to improve at. I will also use a survey at the end of my presentation to give to my audience so that I may also see their reactions to my presentation. The measurement of improvement of my analyzation skills of an audience, I feel, is very difficult to measure. I will most likely have a superior of mine monitor my progress my observing me in my current work environment as much as possible, and during my yearly review, touch on how I have made improvements and where I need to continue improving at. To improve my internal communication skills, I plan to pair with a co-worker and do many of the activities listed above together to keep me accountable. With my partner, I will also have them act like the above superior would for my measurement of my analyzation skills, and observe me throughout the timeframe and provide feedback at the end.
Conclusion
By specifically improving the three communication areas mentioned above, I will be able to become a more successful leader as I will be gaining experience, confidence, and mentors to continue to guide and mentor me along the way through my leadership journey.

Leadership Plan

...would like it to be. Leadership is as “an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes” defined by Daft, R. L. (2011). Ethical leadership is to understand your core values and to have the courage to encompass them in all aspects of your life; including your career are honesty, integrity and compassion. Leadership and motivation styles vary from person to person, that is why it is essential for managers to know and understand their leadership style and how their particular leadership affects their workplace. Leadership is influenced by many things that are why it is so important to know how and why your leadership style is what it is. I feel that I have some strength that can help me with a leadership plan such as identify effective leadership mission, values, planning and goal-setting, delegating authority, team building, giving feedback, coaching team members, motivating people, working for the team, and resolving conflict. There are many contributors that come into play when a leadership style is developed within a person. In creating my personal leadership development plan, I will first provide an overview of what I have found to be my strengths and weaknesses and in doing so will make a distinction as to my leadership style. I will then discuss recent activities I have undertaken which have served to underscore these strengths and weaknesses. Finally, I will lay out my plans for future......

It was once quoted by, President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp, Gilbert Amelio that, "Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter." There are many ways to communicate; this report will focus on three forms of communication, Face-to-Face, Personal and Impersonal Written. The report will take a look at which method of communication is best for this project, best for that phase of the project and how best to generate and distribute project documents among project stakeholders and team members throughout the project in an affective and timely manner. ...expect the oldest to be more of a lead and they tend to stress the importance to lead by example. According to Peter Northhouse; leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” My goal as a big sister has now advance to my goal of being a big leader. In the next couple of years my plans are to strengthen my leadership skills by focusing on my writing skills, my communication and my organizational skills. Although I became a leader in the corporate world years ago, I am just now being able to assess my strengths and weakness. Prior to this year I have always considered a leader is someone in charge or someone who keeps the production positive. In owning my own business although I was the leader, my staff was small and all the decisions made were mine and my employees simply followed suite. I never dealt with different personality conflicts or difficult decisions. Now that I am working in a larger cooperation where my strengths are highlighted, I now see my weakness’s as well. Completing the weekly journals required for class allowed me to write my thoughts and analyze my definition of a leader. In reading the assigned chapters in the book Introduction to Leadership, I have gained much more knowledge of how to become a good leader. Just as Barbara Kellerman said in her speech on Bad Leadership,” we must first know what makes a bad leader so we can learn to be a good leader.” I strongly agree. I needed to learn my......

Communication in Leadership

...Rayfield Marshall Communication in Leadership Cheryl N. Ross, M.S. The Communication Process Communication – Is the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another, it involves a sender transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver. Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit. The art of communication is very important in our daily lives and on the job. I believe we all can benefit by learning and using this valuable tool. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe put it this way “No one would talk much in society if they knew how often they misunderstood others.” Communicating with others involves three primary steps: They are Thought: First, information exists in the mind of the sender. Encoding: Next, a message is sent to a receiver in words or other symbols. Decoding: Lastly, the receiver translates the words or symbols into a concept or information that he or she can understand. During the messages transmission, two elements is received: and they are Content - Which, is the actual words or symbols of the message, We all use and interpret the meanings of word differently, so even a simple message can be misunderstood. Next is Context or the way the message is delivered and is also known as paralanguage or non verbal elements is speech such as tone of voice, the look in the senders eyes, body......

...LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION 1 Leadership Communication Skills BUS 600 – Management Communications with Technology Dr. Leigh Tonelli December 9, 2013 Leadership Communication While some people may assume leadership communication does not have to be led by an effective communicator. , It is essential to know that people that withhold leadership positions in organizations need to have strong effective communication skills that are successful within the organizations that suite their positions. Public health organizations such as health departments have leadership communicators who initially, address issues that reflect the present and future of the organization to other members and staff. This is a detailed duty that needs to ensure a person is a superior communicator (Barrett, 2006). Messages that are given from a leadership perspective reflect values of the organization such as vision, mission, and culture (Barrett, 2006). Leadership communicators also focus on consistency expressed through an organizations values in which they communicate frequently within the organization. People that withhold positions in leadership communication strengthen the values and culture within an organization based on organizational values and the mission of the organization (Barrett, 2006). Leadership without good communication is a setback in many organizations, which is why it’s desired for anyone in leadership communication to have certain traits and characteristics. ...gaillard@hec.edu +33 6 08 32 79 48 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN This paper seeks to elaborate my personal leadership development plan in the objective I have to continuously learn, grow and meet new challenges. Therefore, my approach is to first start from the skills audit outcome provided by the powerful multi source assessments and tools the EMBA program offered me the chance to fill up, giving me feedback on where I am today. Then, it consists of defining the gap with where I want to be tomorrow, and identifying which new skills are the best insurance I can get for an uncertain future, thus pushing my boundaries. Finally, it will deal with what “on-the-job” action plan I need to implement to face my leadership challenges and how I will make it happen. I – Where am I today? What are my current leadership skills and style? My personal life story provides the context for my professional and life experiences which have obviously shape my personality characteristics and style, even if they are not all definitive. Some of them are conscious, others are sub-conscious. The journey to leadership development begins with understanding myself well enough to be self-aware of the main gifts, strengths and specificities I can capitalize on and on which weaknesses I have to improve. For this purpose, and in the context of the Executive MBA program I have decided to undertake, I have filled in several key assessments such as Leadership Versatile Index (LVI),......

Leadership Plan

...Personal Leadership Development Plan Avi Weinstein BMGT363 11/16/2011 PREFACE To preface my Personal Leadership Development Plan, I feel that my path in life is in some ways unique when compared to those of my peers, while in other ways it is very similar. As an Orthodox Jew, I pledge much of my time and efforts to performing the myriad rites and responsibilities of my religion to the enth degree, all the while inexorably tied to my community and its members at the assortment of levels. Combined, these aspects to my identity make up an unshakeable core of who I intrinsically am, something that cannot be shrugged off indiscriminately, as one might forgo a career path that “just isn’t working out.” To hark back to past class exercises, “I am an Orthodox Jew and that is who I am” and even if my “north” isn’t the “north” of Community leaders, I will largely follow their lead because I am bound to the community and its future. I make this point to clarify that this paper will largely only explore the career-based area of my true long-term plans and that there are, for me at least, many considerations beyond that limited scheme. CAREER OBJECTIVES As for short-term career objectives, I plan on spending another year buried in intensive Torah study while serving as a dorm and guidance counselor for a program in Israel whose student body is comprised of American teenagers who choose to take a gap year (or two) between high school and college to do similar Torah study.......

Communication Plan

...Introduction Bill Clinton Middle School is one of the failing schools in Florida. I have recently been appointed as the new principal. According to the former principal’s evaluation he was not an effective communicator at all. There was no rapport with the staff, he did not encourage employee interaction, nor did he show interest in faculty and staff events. These factors could have been the reason for the low staff morale and lack of collegiality in the school. I have an opportunity to come into a horrible situation and work wonders. I plan on doing this by completely remodeling the methods of communication in the school. Needs assessment Administrators can sometime set the tone for the entire school. This includes decisions, actions, and communication style. At Bill Clinton Middle School, the employee morale was low. I have come to the conclusion that this stems from the fact that the previous principal did not communicate well at all with employees. People have something called a reference group. These are the people that are used to evaluate self worth (Adler, Proctor, & Rosenfeld, 2004). In a school setting, co-workers may serve as a kind of reference group. The evaluated actions of the previous principal explain the attitude of the current employees. If the teachers felt this way I can only imagine how the students acted and performed. Happiness breeds more happiness. This calls for a definite need to increase employee morale and make the school seem more......

...HAAS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, EWMBA CLASS OF 2017 A leader prepares Leadership Communication Sachin Sundar 3/8/2015 Adaption of lessons learned from the classical acting text, An Actor Prepares, written by Constantine Stanislavski, towards leadership.   Some people claim that great leaders are born and not made. I believe that even though there are certain traits that can be attributed to genetics which can, let’s say, gives a person the propensity to be a leader, I think through hard work and training anyone can master the “Art of great leadership”. In this paper, I am exploring some of the ways a person can train to be a great leader by drawing parallel from training techniques used by an actor. The primary source from which an actor can draw to create the emotional world of their character is their own life. In an analogous way, an authentic leader must draw from the experiences in their own life. This involves ‘connecting with themselves’ and drawing from the emotional memories and from key events of one’s life. To be a great leader, the quality to recall past experiences from the personal life that trigger certain emotions can evoke the feeling of authenticity in your audience. A growing number of studies point to the importance of leaders expressing their vulnerabilities in order to fully engage with and establish trust from followers. By revealing vulnerability followers can more readily identify with leaders, resulting in more positive and......

In addition to discussing some of the major issues in Organizational Leadership, during this course you were introduced to a variety of leadership skills and techniques that will better enable you to inspire high performance in others. Research suggests that you will significantly increase the likelihood of your accomplishing your goals, vision, and plans if you write them down. Research further suggests that the longer you wait to apply and practice what you have learned; the less likely you will be to successfully transfer these skills into real-world applications. As you fill out the form, take time to reflect now on the information and questions provided in this document. At minimum, identify four things you will do within the next 10 days to reinforce or apply what you’ve learned. Consider your development needs in relation to your organization, cause, or movement’s needs, or another situation you are currently in. Leadership and Communication

...Leadership and Communication Thomas Friedman writes in The World is Flat, “In the flat world, more and more business will be done through collaboration within and between companies, for a very simple reason: the next layers of value creation – whether in technology, marketing, biomedicine, or manufacturing – are becoming so complex that no single firm or department is going to be able to master them alone” (Birchfield, 2008). This quote can initiate one simple theory, that leaders are unable to be successful without the support of their employees and/or supporters. Nonetheless, they can only collaborate in an operational direction by having an unrestrained form of communication. It is imperative that all forms of leadership seek and fulfill communication strategies to create happy employees or supporters. Additionally, while seeking effective communication strategies, leaders must learn how to overcome the barriers that can diminish communication. These almost create a sort of cause and effect feeling with one another. Above all, leaders cannot expect to create a successful business or entity by only leading themselves; a leader must consistently seek self-growth all the while encouraging empowerment and growth among them. Communication Strategies To begin, good communication is a “bridge to worker loyalty” (Mayfield, 2002). Creating worker loyalty produces motivation, dedication, better performances, and a strong support team that will stand behind a leader.......

Communication Plan

...Communications Plan Traditionally, beer is known as a critical part of Germany’s culture and directly translates to their industry practices and market behavior. According to Carroll, Preisendoefer, Swaminathan, and Wiedenmayer (1993), Germany is most notable for the highly fragmented structure of its industry, which contains many more breweries than the larger American industry. However, product concentration has not risen as expected for the market in Germany, which can be attributed to many factors including strong consumer preferences, high transportation costs, and governmental prohibitions specifically define acceptable ingredients used in German beer (Adams, 2006). Germany can increase its market share on a national level by careful and strategic expansion into other beer markets that currently have high demand for beer and less production barriers that counteract cost advantages of large-scale brewing. The most common type of product packaging used in Germany is bottling, which accounts for 60% of beer containment. Of the remaining 40% cans and kegs each makes up 20%. Canning has accelerated production capacity. Canning lines can fill 2,000 containers per minutes versus bottle lines that fill 1,100 containers per minute (Adams, 2006). The bottles used by German brewers are reusable, which adds to the high-cost of production. Expanding into new markets that support an efficient packaging mix, such as the use of canning lines will motivate German brewers to build......

Leadership Communication

...Assignment 1 – Essay: Briefing sheet Question 1: Classical management theory conceptualises communication as a downward, one-way transfer of information from management to staff. What in your view makes for good leadership communication in organizations? In the foretime, the use of primitive or slightly more advanced information transmission methods is common for people to communicate. Nowadays, the rapid development of technology facilitates the variety ways of people communicating such as television, mobile phone or the Internet. Communication can be defined as a process of sending and receiving of ideas, information, thoughts, messages, signals through verbal, non-verbal, written or other various methods (Walker, 2011; De Vries et al.,2010). Although communication, in general, can simple be the sharing of ideas and information between two or greater people, this exchange process is more important in society, especially in organizations. In other words, communication can affect every relationship in hierarchical organizations. As a result, the communication process is clearly one of the strategies which should be carefully managed not only to external customers but also internal customer, employees, by the management. Along with the growth of advanced technology and the intensive demand of labour market, employees have to continuously improve their broad knowledge and skills to adapt these requirements. Therefore, they also have many expectations in their workplaces...

Leadership Communication

...Leadership Communication A leader must be able to communicate effectively. When CEOs and other senior executives in all industries and countries are asked to list the most important skills a manager must possess, the answer consistently includes – good communication skills. Managers spend most of their day engaged in communication; in fact, older studies of how much time managers spend on various activities show that communication occupies 70 to 90 percent of their time every day
(Mintzberg, 1973; Eccles & Nohria, 1991). With cell phones, e-mail, text messaging, if that same study were done today, it would yield even higher percentages. The sheer amount of time managers spend communicating underscores how important strong communication skills can be for the manager desiring to advance to leadership positions; thus, mastering leadership communication should be a priority for managers wanting their organizations or the broader business community to consider them leaders. Leadership communication is the controlled, purposeful transfer of meaning by which leaders influence a single person, a group, an organization, or a community. Leadership communication uses the full range of communication skills and resources to overcome interferences and to create and deliver messages that guide, direct, motivate, or inspire others to action. The higher up in an organization a manager moves, the more complex his or her communication demands become. Connecting Leadership and......

Communication drives employee’s behaviors in accepting an idea, plan or change. Making the technique chosen very important. Written communication is more likely to be thought out, logical and clear making it an important tool to communicate for complex and lengthy communications. Written communication has drawbacks, it can be time consuming and a disadvantaged to immediate feedback (University of Phoenix). Oral communication is effective by getting the message out quickly and feedback is immediate. Face-to-face communication is always effective but has disadvantages if the message has to pass through individuals. The message will get distorted with every individual it passes through (University of Phoenix, 2011).
