Crohn’s Disease Crohn’s disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It cause inflammation of the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract that can cause some serous symptoms. Some of the major symptoms include Persistent diarrhea or constipation. Other symptoms include weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain and cramps, reduced appetite, and urgent bowel movements. This disease has two stages that switch around. Flare ups or periods or symptoms and troubles and remission a period of time when there are no symptoms. This disease normally affects people for the first time between 15 and 40 years of age. There are many ways to control or cope with this disease. Medication or Lifestyle changes.

Lifestyle changes should always be tried before medication. Sometime medication is not needed with proper lifestyle changes. There are no current know way to prevent this disease. Lifestyle changes to control this disease are fairly simple. Keeping a good nutritional diet is important. Cutting out trigger foods like dairy can also be beneficial. This illness reduces the absorption rate of protein, vitamins, and minerals. So eating healthy and taking multivitamins is a great way to cope. Eating smaller meals and increasing liquid intake helps your body get the most out of what you eat. Reducing stress is another life style change that is important. Stress slows down digestion and produces more acid. Smoking is link to flare up as well. Exercising regularly is another life style change that can be beneficial in more ways than one.

The factors that might be hard for some to accomplish is reducing stress and cutting out your personal trigger foods. Reducing stress is hard because it is everywhere. One way to insure that you are reducing stress is having someone else take responsibility for certain stressors in your life. Example would be having your spouse handle all the bills for a while. Also finding ways to relax that works for you like taking a walk, reading a book, or taking a bath. Anything that reduces your stress is the right way. Cutting out triggers is also hard due to the fact that you might not know what your triggers are. One way is to keep a food diary. Every time you eat write it down if you have a flare up then one at a time take away items that you eat before the flare up. This is a timely process but is worth it in the end. Even if you cannot cut out or reduce all your trigger the more you can the better off you are. For example pasta can be a trigger food is becoming so expensive maybe eat something in place of pasta couple times a week.

I currently suffer from this disease. I was given the choice of medication and lifestyle changes. After countless doctor’s appointments and testing I found that I have to do both. If I could chose just one I would chose the lifestyle changes but sometimes that is not enough. I would chose this because every medication has its own set of side effects and they are sometimes worse than the original problem. Also I do not care for medications at all. I have tried dozens and they all do things that can be done by simple changes to your life. So that’s my choice what is yours?
