Arvin English 110 22 Sep 2014 Meet the Firm As a junior but a “freshmen” here in the United States, I exposed myself to most of the activities happened in my school every day. Tried to get myself familiar with the US culture. I tried every method to join the club or other interests group in order to help me survive in the United States. Most of them turned out to be meaningless, since I am from a different culture that I can barely understand what they were laughing at. However, there is one activity that is so useful for me to learn how to survive in the US culture as a business student, that is the annual career fair “meet the firm”. The first time I heard about this activity is from my accounting teacher. She paused when she was giving us a class. “By the way, here’s a very important event that I want all of you to remember!” she said, with her finger pointing on her head and eyes turned rounded. “Meet the firm! Tomorrow at 5 pm! You would not want to miss this chance! And I want to see every one of you in the event.” She pointed everyone in the class firmly with her finger and shouted. I took her word and showed up at Trabant with my suit. Although I was a little bit earlier, there was already full of well-dressed people. They looked smart with a small suitcase or a nice file folder carried on their hands while I brought nothing with me. Although there was a lot people, the order was so nice that every people was waiting in a line while chatting with some friends they just met. Even though the line was too long that some people had to wait outside of the building, no one broke the rule. Just waited patiently at the end of the queue. You could see confidence, intelligence, hard-working all writing on their face. “They must have prepared long time for this”, I whispered to myself. By the time I was thinking how I was not qualified for this event, the door of the hall opened. At that specific moment, everyone stopped talking and turned to looked inside the door. Time seemed pause at that moment, as people watching, holding their breath and waiting for the upcoming things. Soon, some of the firms’ managers came out and greeted us with a simple Hi and a strong handshake. Then every well-dressed man and woman walked inside and found his or her favorite company to talked about. The hall was soon turning into the ocean of noise. Students were busy introducing themselves as well as the companies were busy showing them some appropriate program, others were standing in the queue, craning their neck, standing on their tip-toe, seizing every opportunity to see what those employee asked about. As for me, I was standing aside watching all of this. I started to learn how to sell myself to the employee. As I had observed, most of the people used thirty-second to make their pitch. So I spent sometime to make my own pitch, and then stood into JP Morgan’s queue. Time was passing so slow that I felt my heart beating faster and faster and my breath is becoming hurried. Finally, it was my turn, I took a deep breath, made a step further and sent out my hand. The conversation was not that successful but still I made my first try and I thought it was worthwhile. I had tried a couple of new firms later that day, but all came up with they were not having much interest on me. However, the happiness of learning new things in this event was exceeding the painful I had suffered. Through this event, I have learned several great rules that will guide me on my life here in the United States. Being punctual, being polite, being professional and being confidence are all what an American students showed, and most importantly is the ability of social networking. The US society valued people who can talk, who is willing to talk and who can talk well. So I think practicing how to talk and how to make friends is the ideal thing that will help me survived in the USA. Several days after the “meet the firms” event, I decided to join the Blue Hen Leadership Program to enhance my social networking. Until now, I am making great progress on that. As I am looking back, the impression of the event is still left in my mind, exciting and unforgettable.…...

Introduction Before we can analyze what the small firm sector is and how it homogenously coexists with the economy, it is firstly imperative to clearly stipulate what the small firm sector consists of. It is of course a triviality to acknowledge that the small firm sector consists of small business, but what is a small business? To answer that we should first be aware of what indeed a business is or at least perhaps the underlying meaning of the commonly used synonym enterprise is? The majority of us and even perhaps the overwhelming majority would stipulate that these ideas could be deemed almost self- explanatory. However is this really the case? How many of us truly stop to think and ponder the meanings at the core of the daily vocabulary that we casually and flippantly......

Meet the Parents

...‘Meet The Parents’ Reflections Every relationship is based on the foundation of its underlying communication. Besides on a verbal level, the smallest of non-verbal cues, pauses, movements or gestures also determine the construction or destruction of a relationship between two or more people. In the film, Meet The Parents, interpersonal communication is one of the subtly placed themes that revolve around the story. Interpersonal communication can be defined as the reciprocal message processing, when two or more individuals mutually take account of and adjust to one another’s verbal or non-verbal behaviors. The relationship between Greg Focker and Jack Byrnes is one that develops at a gradual pace, though not necessarily always in a positive direction. Greg is anxious to seek Jack’s approval, while Jack, being the over-protective father that he is, puts up a dominating and slightly unwelcoming stature. This along with Pam’s family and friends treating Greg like an outsider makes him lose his self-confidence, become uncertain and awkward with his words and gestures, leading to various awkward conversations and events. Coincidentally, as a result Greg tries going out of his way to warm up to Pam’s loved ones, which just leads to further unfortunate and catastrophic happenings. “It is known that people are able to interpret social cues rapidly, correctly, and often automatically, accessing in this way information related to “the internal states, social identities, and......

Meet the Press

...Meet The Press February 5th 2012 My my first time watching the show I actually found it interesting aside from not knowing what they are actually talking about some of the time. This episode of February 5th was accompanied by guest speaker Newt Gingrich. Newt was asked to speak on several topics which include his thoughts on Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, as response to war on religion and a update on the current job market status and how Romney won't help it. Also before I get started I wanted to point out that the host was sort of rude and liked cutting people off when they speak. I'm sure he knows his politics but who does he think he is? I may be exaggerating but he rubbed me the wrong way with his questions, I mean attacks. To start off the show the hosts asked Mr. Gingrich what he thought about Mitt Romney and his winning poles in Nevada. The well thought response of Mr. Gingrich was as something like this. Mr. Gingrich Accused Mitt Romney of spreading rumors that Newt would withdraw from the race at Caucus time, which I'm still not sure exactly what Caucus is or if it should even be capitalized or not, heh. In, addition to his first response he added that he is basically moving on and not dreading on the past. Mr. Gingrich seems to have a clear agenda ahead as he continues to respond to the statement that basically meant Romney just cleaned house in Nevada. Newt says he is moving on, moving to Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas and focuses and......

Meet the Mormons

...Mormons: Are They Being Insincere? The documentary, Meet the Mormons, is scheduled to open, for one week only, in over 300 theaters across the United States. The movie premier is creating a buzz that is circling the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; however, the film is being scrutinized for the wrong reason. The documentary’s tickets sales, not its content, is the source of much controversy, as members are buying out theaters for opening weekend. Even though, it may be perceived as insincere; it may ultimately allow additional nonmembers to see the movie. Right to Buy Tickets for Opening Weekend Anyone can buy a ticket to see the movie Meet the Mormons. Elder Jeffery R. Holland, a member of the church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, "We want as many people as possible to see this film," in a September video directed at church members. "As with any theatrical film, our success will depend on box-office performance during the opening weekend. How long the film will be available in theaters will depend on that." (Wolf, 2014, para. 6) Holland also recommended that members consider if they have the means, to “buyout” a showing for a group (Wolf, 2014). This request is a recommendation to the church’s parishioners, not a directive. Local congregations that choose to pre-purchase tickets will most likely share with family, friends and neighbors. The LDS church will donate net proceeds from the movie attendance to the American Red Cross. Allow More......

Meet the Brics

5. In the event that the BRICs fail to meet projected performance, what would be some of the implications for international business?

As a result, overseas firms will desire to observe foremost financial pointers, as Purchasing Power Parity, Gross National Income and Human Development Index, in addition to developments in the cultural, political, and legal environments of those countries The BRIC thesis posits that China and India will become the world's dominant suppliers of manufactured goods and services, respectively, while Brazil and Russia will become similarly Dominant as suppliers of raw materials. It's important to note that the Goldman Sachs thesis isn't that these countries are a political alliance (like the European Union) or a formal trading association - but they have the potential to form a powerful economic bloc. Theories of the Firm

...Theories of the Firm To understand firm heterogeneity within industries and its relations to competitive advantage, reviewing some of the most influential theories of the firm is important. Starting with Coase (1937), academic research in economics and management has nurtured a long tradition of trying to unveil the “essence of the firm.” Some scholars believe that discovering the true nature of the firm permits understanding real- world firms. Whether things or concepts have “essences” is questionable. From a practical standpoint, finding this essence is not essential, but having a practical definition of the firm may be needed. A good “theory of the firm” is one that helps managers identify and choose the best projects among all feasible ones. It must also provide a definition of “best.” A brief review of three theories of the firm follows. The first theory views the firm as a nexus of contracts. Most valuation and project selection frameworks implicitly assume this view. The second one views the firm as an efficient solution to the problem of economizing on transaction costs. Such a view is particularly useful for understanding acquisitions and divestitures, especially in those cases involving vertical integration or outsourcing decisions. The third theory views the firm as the locus of crucial resources. This view is particularly helpful for understanding corporate strategy and value creation. The Firm as a Nexus of Contracts Some argue that the firm is......
