Most Effective and Least Effective Employer

January 11, 2013

In society we tend to go through stages of survival. One of the main forms of survival is employment. When one is employed, one must go through communication, as well as paying attention to detail. In this paper, I like to focus on analyzing, comparing and contrasting from the most effective and the least effective employment. According to Kinicki, effectiveness means “to achieve results, to make the right decisions, and to successfully carry them out so that they can achieve the organization’s goals” (5). This simply implies that when one is involved in such employment the focus should be on the success of the company or business. Focusing on two jobs that stood out; one was in the military, I was a lower enlisted soldier in a Transportation Unit (Majority of the things we dealt with were vehicles and soldiering in general) and the other job was a mail clerk with the Veteran Administration (The mail clerk position serves the Veteran for benefits, education, and death related issues).
The least effective job that I have experienced was the in the military. While in service, my higher in command made some choices that could have literally put our lives at risks. Some incidents included lack of knowledge of the tasks at hand or the boss just had a negative attitude towards us fellow troops. An example of a scenario as a soldier in the military: we had missions that we would do that were dangerous. Our job was to make sure the vehicle was properly maintained, and also focus on how to strategically get to point A to point B in regards to delivering products from one destination to the next, and escort people were they needed to go. It becomes quite clear that the most effective type of power is not a singular power type at all but a blend of power types to match the individuals being interacted with. Out of the power types that have been presented this week, I find that the reward, referent, and legitimate power types can lead to desired effects within interactions as both parties can reach their intended goal without using a negative form of persuasion to succeed.
