Nothing

...Philosophy Western philosophy Some would consider the study of "nothing" to be foolish, a typical response of this type is voiced by Giacomo Casanova (1725–1798) in conversation with his landlord, one Dr. Gozzi, who also happens to be a priest, “ | As everything, for him, was an article of faith, nothing, to his mind, was difficult to understand: the Great Flood had covered the entire world; before, men had the misfortune of living a thousand years; God conversed with them; Noah had taken one hundred years to build the ark; while the earth, suspended in air, stood firmly at the center of the universe that God had created out of nothingness. When I said to him, and proved to him, that the existence of nothingness was absurd, he cut me short, calling me silly.[3] | ” | However, "nothingness" has been treated as a serious subject worthy of research for a very long time. In philosophy, to avoid linguistic traps over the meaning of "nothing", a phrase such as not-being is oftenemployed to unambiguously make clear what is being discussed. Parmenides One of the earliest western philosophers to consider nothing as a concept was Parmenides (5th century BC) who was a Greek philosopher of the monist school. He argued that "nothing" cannot exist by the following line of reasoning: To speak of a thing, one has to speak of a thing that exists. Since we can speak of a thing in the past, it must still exist (in some sense) now and from this concludes that there is no such thing as......

Something You Want to Change or Fix in This World.

...I read somewhere “I can only see a better world built on the ashes of this one”. Still trying to figure out what it really means. Gandhi believed we must be the change we want to see in this world. But what change can we effect? The world isn’t going to change just because you don’t like it. Change means different things to different people. For Macklemore change meant changing world’s point of view on homosexuality. He was frustrated how the world around him viewed same sex marriage and he wanted to help change that. Our society is evolving; change is inevitable so why not change for the betterment? So what is it that I want to “change” or “fix” in this world? I think I want to get rid of religions. No, it does NOT mean that I’m an atheist, or I don’t believe in God. I do. With all my heart, but what is today that man needs religion for? To be ethical and moral? Every sane person on the planet knows right from wrong without needing a religion to tell them. It's a natural instinct of all animals and probably the only remaining animal instinct in humans that is beneficial. Many religions enforce these altered ideas of right and wrong with blind faith and self-righteous attitudes, which in turn, creates more problems pertaining to ethics and morals. I firmly believe the most ethical and moral human beings are the ones who know right from wrong and also have no affiliation to any religion. The change I suppose that I want to see is to stop using religion to target minorities...

Nothing

...Nothing – A mere seven characters long word but with such significance in our lives, which cannot be ignored. It has such diverse number of uses in our lives which we cannot even imagine. Everything, from us to the whole universe, started with this one word. It is the beginning of everything. As we can say, the step zero of all the processes is always ‘Nothing’. If something is already there then it cannot re-originate. Nothing existed before the Big Bang happened, which led to the creation of the universe. Now as the universe is already there, it cannot be re-created without it first being destroyed which will again lead it back to the step zero. It is also the most widely used word by us nowadays. ‘Nothing’ is what we do most of the times. It just may be the profession of a huge number of people in the world. Some love doing it and some are forced to it because of certain circumstances. To speak of it, at some point of time or the other all of us want to just sit back, relax and do nothing. This is what ultimately everyone’s goal is, this is what we work hard for all our lives. We all study hard to make a good career so that we can earn a lot of money and then just sit back and enjoy without having to do anything, which means being happily retired. It can also be used to hide our feelings and thoughts from the others. When we don’t want to discuss or talk about anything, we simply sum it all up in just this one word and the topic ends. Another form in which this word...

This Is a Man's World

...This is a Man’s World This is a Man’s World War is mentally and physically straining. When a country goes to war it depends on its military to be up for any challenge war has to offer. 50 years ago the thought of a woman joining the ranks were laughable; today it is a reality. Women have proved that they can doubtfully be called the weaker gender, and recently have been able to serve in combat roles. Combat roles are the most dangerous and physically demanding roles the United States military has to offer. When a soldier signs up for this role they understand that they will be put on the frontline and in the line of fire from the enemy. Nature has made women physically weaker and less durable than men. A highly trained woman cannot match a man in physical strength. I served proudly alongside women for ten years in the military, but I strongly believe that they should not be able to serve in combat roles in the United States. Having them serve in such roles can have negative effects on them and the men that they serve with; lower standards, health issues, and possible harassment situations. When women were allowed into the military many of the army standards were either lowered or vanish completely. According to head officials at West Point Academy, Cadets no longer run in boots due to the fact women were suffering from a high rate of injury (Knight, 1991). Physical training test scores were adjusted because women could not meet the basic physical requirements to stay...

The Ways of This World

...The four contemporary approaches to management are sociotechnical systems theory, quantitative management, organizational management, and systems theory. Sociotechnical systems theory suggest that employees are more productive when the have the right tools and training. Quantitative management is a theory the states that the organizations quality can be formulated through equations, although this approach is not relied on by most managers. Organizational management is when a manager does certain activities to promote employee work. System theory is the contemporary approach that focuses on the relationship between the public and the organization All of these are important approaches to management, although I believe the most important is systems theory. System theory is stating that an organization changes inputs into outputs, also it emphasizes on how the organization is a subsystem and system to other subsystems and systems; for example: Walmart → departments → employees. The reason I believe this is more important than the others is because it focus’ on the relationship between the consumer and organization. The reason I do not believe sociotechnical isn’t the most important is because even though the employees are well trained and have the right tools, does not necessarily mean that the employees will act right when they fall into a hard situation. I find that quantitative management could be flawed through the equations and formulas. Organization management can fail......

Finding My Place in This World

...As humanity looks into the world they have two options to choose from. Did I come from a rock, or did I come from divine intervention? This will affect every piece of their life from relationships to personal growth and beyond. When a person finds their identity in God, it defines their relationship to the rest of the world and those within it. Natural World If you do not have a clue as to where it all began you cannot possibly know where you are going. The progressive nature of the world humanity lives in positively shows evidence of design. Simple logic shows humanity that laws exist. But how did these laws happen? Human reasoning should tell us that laws do not just snap into existence without reason. Somehow they have to have been created. Physical laws of science, themselves, give evidence that something started the law into motion. If law exists than a law maker should exist as well. Ray Comfort uses this example “When I look at a building, how can I know there was a builder? You can’t see them, hear them, touch them, taste them, or smell them…..Well the building is absolute scientific 100 percent evidence there was a builder.” (Comfort) The fact that humanity has any form of morality gives credence to something greater than man in this world. Human Identity When you are trying to identify who you are as a human being your origin is of extreme importance. If humanity came from nothing then humanity is technically nothing. No value. No meaning. No purpose. But if God...

There Is a Lot of Injustice in This World

...There is a lot of injustice in this world. What do you think? Yes, of course I think there is a lot of injustice in this world. The biggest problems that we have are discrimination, poor distribution of wealth, violation of human rights. These problems cause a lot of consequences. Our way of life, sadly, depends on our jobs. We should have a better way to live. Who decides that a waitress here in the UK must be better paid that the person who is fishing or growing our food in Africa? People tend rather automatically to categorise others along three dimensions: race, sex and age. Being a white man in Europe or North America is the best position you can ever get. There is a lot of research about racism; there is nothing else to say, but a lot to do. Sexism is still a big problem, not only in developing countries where girls must get married without their consent or against their will. Here, in Europe, maternity leave is still a big issue, nobody is going to say anything to your face, because they are too polite for that, but of course it is going to cause awkward situations, and it can even make you vulnerable to unfair treatment sometimes. Reconciliation of work and family life is not a priority in the business world. And it is sad they are still making us think about what we need to prioritize, family should be first always, and children are not only a mother´s responsibility. Ageism is a really big problem now. You spend your whole life working hard, but when you......

Love Calls Us to the Things of This World

...“Love Calls Us to the Things of This World” Richard Wilbur Richard Wilbur’s poem, “Love Calls Us to the Things of This World” is about the first moments of the morning when we are between the state of being asleep and being awake. That moment when we aren’t burden with the outside world and still on the outskirts of reality, engulfed in a worry free peaceful zone. As the sleeper is in his peaceful state, the window is open and he hears the “cry of the pulleys” as laundry is being hung and what I envisioned also was him hearing the flapping of the laundry because he says “The morning air is all awash with angles”. That maybe the flapping laundry instead of awakening him even more, reminds him of the flapping wings of an Angel. As the sleeper is in the world of the Angels and harmony, consciousness eventually wins and the sleeper is now aware that it is just laundry flapping in the wind and nothing more. The soul is now descended back into it body and daily life. One then wonders why we would want to wake up from this blissful state of being and the answer to that I believe is love. Just like the title says “Love Calls Us to the Things of This World”. We do things for love and that is why the sleeper leaves the peaceful wondrous state and awakens to a new day. “Love Calls Us to the Things of this World” shows us how different the spiritual world and the real world can be. The man then goes to describe the thieves in the gallows should have clean linens for their......

This World Is Ending

...FOREWORD This booklet contains reports written by Examiners on the work of candidates in certain papers. Its contents are primarily for the information of the subject teachers concerned. 4040 Statistics November 2005 STATISTICS GCE Ordinary Level Paper 4040/01 Paper 1 General comments Once again, many very good scripts were submitted, but, as last year, probably not the same proportion of extremely high marks was achieved as was the case a few years ago. There were possibly a number of reasons for this. One point, made in this report last year, but which has clearly not been taken on board by some candidates relates to a situation, which occurred quite frequently in this paper, where a question requests that a final answer should be given to a particular level of accuracy. Time and again such a request was not complied with by a number of candidates. The resulting loss of marks is needless, as indeed it is when, as appeared to happen in a few cases involving answers to two questions, a question instructs ‘copy and complete the table’, and it appears that a candidate has completed the table in the question paper but not copied it into his/her answer booklet. Another common cause of loss of marks arose when a question asked for comment. This almost always requires a candidate to make some relevant statement in the context of the question, not just to make some general remark on the topic concerned which appears to have been learned by rote from a textbook. A point made in......

Why There Are Hitler’s and Stalin’s and Mussolini’s in This World?

...Why there are Hitler’s and Stalin’s and Mussolini’s in this world? There are Hitler followers in the world because he was a strong extremist patriot, and this is what the Germans thought they needed. German’s felt they were going to fail under the Weimar republic and the felt this way because In its 14 years, the Weimar Republic was faced with numerous problems, including hyperinflation, political extremists on the left and the right and their paramilitaries, and hostility from the victors of World War I, who tried twice to restructure Germany's reparations payments through the Dawes Plan and the Young Plan (WikiPedia )and they needed a strong dictator to get them back on their feet. People feared him and were afraid of him, as they knew what he and the Nazi party could do to them. The Germans followed Hitler because he was promising the people what they wanted, after the treaty of Versailles Germany had become a country with an army limited to 100,000 men, they had to take the blame for the war and had to pay back all the war debts, their economy was terrible (Miller). Hitler was a great speaker Hitler promised to take them out of their depression and he kept his promise and made Germany a power house. Hitler was very intelligent and even though he was mad, he was brilliant. Hitler was changing Germany into his vision of what he wanted it to be and obviously there were people who agree with him therefore followed him. He was the greatest spokesman. Modern day organizations...

...Lover Calls us to the Things of this World 1 Lover Calls us to the Things of this World Heather Waltman ENG125: Introduction to Literature Lover Calls us to the Things of this World 2 Lover Calls us to the Things of this World The poem I am choosing is Love Call us to the Things of this World by Richard Wilbur. This poem speaks of a man or woman who woke up from a night’s sleep. In this story I feel it is saying that no matter where life takes you one can do anything. In Wilbuer’s poem he gives us an insight into a spiritual world. He talks about how love can make you do crazy things for some one. There are all kinds of love when it comes to the spiritual part of love. This whole poem is talking about love and things that inter wind with the poem. The pulleys awake the man or women not a lot just enough for them to realize that they did not want to wake up. This is a feeling that God wanted them to know not to be scared and that he will guide them through anything and will help them as long as they want him too. God also wants them to know not to run from him. Lover Calls us to the Things of this World 3 In Wilbuer’s third section he talks about how a man or women is ready to accept what has for them...

Is This the Best of All Possible Worlds

...This is only an attempt to answer such a question as whether this is the best of all possible worlds and construct a more complete comprehension of it’s meaning. The law of opposition creates the potential for this to be the best of all worlds. To imagine another world, which surely must exist among the billions of stars and infinite expanse, is enthralling. In looking at possibilities, it seems a little too naïve to rule out the existence of something better. Where two things exist, one is bound to be greater than the other in some dimension, especially when there is a determining judge. Who can be the judge of worlds? If it is a god that judges between one type or form and another than there is much more to consider. Can a perfect and absolute being create imperfection? Or does a world of perfection include a spectrum of opposites? The answer to the latter question is answered by Pangloss in response to a Familiar of the Inquisition “For the Fall and curse of man necessarily entered into the system of the best of worlds” (Voltaire 11). Before the Fall of Man there was no sin or fallacy in the world, and everything was “good”, but good cannot be good without the contrast of evil. Humans only understand happiness when they have experienced sorrow. Take Candide for example: when he murders the brother of Cunegonde he first feels despair, but later when that action saves his life he calls it the goodness of nature. “If I had not been so lucky as to run Miss Cunegonde’s......
