Suppose that Sally’s preferences over baskets containing petrol (good x), and food (good
y), are described by the utility function U (x, y) = xy + 100y. The marginal utilities for this function are,
MUx = y and MUy = x + 100.
Use Px to represent the price of petrol, Py to represent the price of food, and I to represent
Sally’s income.
Question 1: Find Sally’s petrol demand function, and Sally’s food demand function. (8
Marks)
Question 2: From Sally’s perspective, is food a normal good, an inferior good, or neither normal nor inferior? Briefly explain with reference to your answer to question 1. (2 Marks)
Question 3: Suppose that the price of petrol is $2 per litre, the price of food is $5 per kilogram, and Sally’s income is $400. What quantities of food and petrol does Sally consume? What level of utility does Sally receive from this consumption basket? (3
Marks)
Question 4: Suppose that, as in question 3, the price of petrol is $2 per litre, the price of food is $5 per kilogram, and Sally’s income is $400. Now suppose that the government is considering two alternative policies to improve Sally’s welfare.
Policy 1: Place a $0.4 per litre subsidy on petrol, reducing the price of petrol to $1.6 per litre.
Policy 2: Give Sally a voucher that can be used to purchase food (but not petrol).
What value of voucher will cause policy 2 to have the same effect on Sally’s utility as policy 1? (8 Marks)
Question 5: Which of the two policies, described in question 4, is least costly to the government? (Assume that the value of the voucher in Policy 2 is your answer to question 4.) Briefly explain why this is the case. (4…...

Bounded Rationality and Consumer Choice Theory

...Introduction The theory of bounded rationality is one that been a cause for discussion in economist circles around the world for many years. The theory, originally coined by Hebert Simon surrounded the limitation of humans to process the amount of information available to make a logical, economic decision and the consumer would therefore, settle for something that satisfyingly sufficient, or ‘satisfice’(Simon 1955). Furthermore, the theory expanded over time to also include mans use of heuristics to simplify cognitive effort in the decision making process (Simon and Newell 1972) and it was argued that ‘logical and economic’ decisions were never reached by humans due to emotions and judgement controlling the decision making process and causing a range of biases and errors (Tversky and Kahneman 1986). The theory identified that humans would use these heuristics, such as rule of thumb or an estimation, to find something that is satisfactory to their needs rather than making the ideal economic decision. I agree with the notion that the world is ‘too complex for people to solve problems by employing strict logical rules and comprehensive thought processes’ (Simon 1955) and am also of the belief that humans will rely on heuristics to make the cognitive process more straightforward. Rational Consumer Choice Rational consumer choice theory has been around for many years and stems from the ideal that consumers act in a ‘rational’ fashion when making economic decisions. Not......

Consumer Behavior Assignment 1

...1. What is consumption? Provide three examples of something you have "consumed" recently, and illustrate the concept of consumption with each example. Consumption, as stated in the textbook, represents the process by which goods, services, or ideas are used and transformed into value. Music is enjoyable only whey one listens to it and like it. Consumption can turn an mp3 file into value by listening. Watching movies are enjoyable and another thing that I have recently consumed and greatly enjoyed. Consumption can turn a movie into value by watching it. Shopping is also another activity that I have consumed and greatly enjoyed without a doubt. Consumption can turn shopping into value by purchasing different items. 2. What two basic approaches to studying (i.e., researching) consumer behavior are discussed in this chapter? How do they differ? Interpretive research seeks to explain the inner meanings and motivations associated with specific consumption experiences. Quantitative research addresses questions about consumer behavior by using numerical measurement and analysis tools. Interpretive research generally falls into the broader category of qualitative research. When it comes to quantitative research the measurement is usually structured, meaning that the consumer will simply choose a response from among alternatives supplied by the researcher. 3. How is the fact that communication media preferences are changing affecting consumer behavior and the effective use......

Theory of Constraints Assignment

...A summary and discussion of articles; Goleman, D. (1998, fall). The emotional intelligence of leaders. Leader to Leader, 10, 20-26 And McCrimmon, M. (2005, January) Thought leadership: a radical departure from traditional, positional leadership. Management Decision, 43 (7/8), 1064-1070 Summary 1 Goleman, D. (1998, fall). The emotional intelligence of leaders. Leader to Leader, 10, 20-26Leadership skills can be derived from various angles and most organizations have a certain style of leadership. Most of these styles come from studies and patterns of growth. Goleman (1998), in this article explains with illustrations how leadership should be construed and how one’s emotions play a huge role towards an effective style of leadership. The way you feel the type of person you are and the actions you take are essential in leadership skills. Leaders in top positions in various organizations have great credentials to show for it but, like Goleman pointed out, there are some that lead mainly on what they have studied, that is, their technical expertise. Hence, they are not open to emotionally leading that organization. Our emotions are who we are, they are imbedded in us. Goleman, goes further to give in-depth illustrations as to how the human brain is linked to what feelings we feel, be it happy or sad, regret or anger. Thinking your actions through before voicing them out has a lot to do with our emotions. Our thinking faculty and the emotional part of our......

...Auditing Theory -Auditing and Assurance Services- An integrated approach Chapter 1 The assurance service market Objective 1-1 describe auditing: Auditing: accumulation and evaluation of evidence about information to determine and report on the degree of correspondence between the information and established criteria. Auditing should be done by a competent, independent person. Evidence: any information used by the auditor to determine whether the information being audited is stated in accordance with the established criteria. To satisfy the purpose of the audit, auditors must obtain a sufficient quality and volume of evidence. Forms of evidence: - Transaction data - Client testimony - Written and electronic communications with outsiders - observations To do an audit there must be information in a verifiable form and some standards (criteria) by which the auditor can evaluate information. The auditor must be qualified to understand the criteria used and must be competent to know the type and amount of evidence to accumulate in order to reach the proper conclusion after examining the evidence. The auditor must also have an independent mental attitude. The final stage in the auditing process is preparing the audit report which communicates the auditor’s findings to the users. It must inform the readers of the degree of correspondence between information audited and the established criteria. Objective 1-2 distinguish between auditing and accounting Accounting:......

Consumer Culture Theory, Consumer Agency and the Importance of Brands

...Consumer Culture Theory, Consumer Agency and the Importance of Brands Summary of the Importance and Relevance of Topic Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) refers to the classification of a certain approach to studying consumers and the way that they consume. It was first coined in 2005 by Arnould and Thompson, and it specifically addresses the sociocultural, symbolic, experiential and ideological facets of consumption. Their work is the culmination of over a quarter century of research that treats consumer behaviour as a phenomenon worth studying. As we have come to develop the field of CCT, so too are we developing our understanding of the consumer, and the broader economy. The work of Arnould and Thompson has provided students of consumer behaviour with the necessary environment to debate, innovate and advance the field of study.1 CCT is important within the scope of consumer behaviour because it places a focus on meaning and identity creation; it delves deeper in the mentality that surrounds consumers in the marketplace, and an understanding of this mentality is useful to all that engage the market (buyers, sellers, producers, etc...). “CCT explores how consumers actively rework and transform symbolic meanings encodes in ads, brands, retail settings, or material goods to manifest their particular personal and social circumstances and lifestyle goals.”2 In understanding CCT, we understand the market in a broad sense, for example, acknowledging that marketing symbols are......

Theories and Concepts Assignment

...I have chosen to discuss the two feminist theories that were previously mentioned due to the fact that they both focus heavily on the oppression of men in society, as well as the evident gender division between the sexes. I have chosen to focus on the six concepts that were previously mentioned because they focus on how women are oppressed, and mistreated in society. Radical Feminism Radical feminism supports the idea that patriarchy is the main form of oppression women face. The goal of radical feminism is the elimination of patriarchy. From a radical feminist perspective, women are oppressed in three main ways or areas: the state, the nuclear family, and through reproduction and mothering. Radical feminism also suggests that the lack of control women have over their own bodies and own reproduction is central to oppression. Radical feminists aim towards eliminating sexual, as well as physical violence against women (Calixte et al., 2009). The significance of radical feminism is that it focuses on what is seen as the major oppressors in our culture. Moreover, radical feminism opens our eyes to male dominance and how it has been highly normalized. It alerts us to how ‘normal’ or common images from pornography reduce women to sexual objects. Moreover, it makes clear that prostitution is a form of economic and sexual exploitation women. Instead of relying on preexisting theories, radical feminism is significant because it is a theory generated by and for women (Calixte et al...

Mean value theorems of differential calculus Theorem 1.1.1 (Mean Value Theorem). Suppose that the function f is continuous on the closed finite interval [a, b] and that it is differentiable on the interval (a, b). Then ∃ a point c ∈ (a, b) such that f (b) − f (a) = f (c) . b−a It means that the slope of the chord joining the points (a, f (a)) and (b, f (b)) is equal to the slope of the tangent line to te curve y = f (x) at the point (c, f (c)) so that the two lines are parallel. Fig 2.28 Example 1.1.1. √ Verify the conclusion of the mean value theorem for f (x) = x on the interval [a, b], where a ≤ x ≤ b. Solution. We are to show that ∃ c ∈ (a, b) such that f (b) − f (a) = f (c) b−a 1 XEQ 201 so long as f is continuous on [a, b] and is differentiable on (a, b). Now √ √ 1 f (x) = 2√x ,......

...Price Theory Assignment 2 – Market Power Click Link Below To Buy: http://hwaid.com/shop/price-theory-assignment-2-market-power/ Assignment 2 – Market Power In Lumino City, the taxi industry is regulated by the Government Taxi Authority. A company can only supply taxi services, in Lumino City, if it is issued a licence by the Government Taxi Authority. (Note: A licence does not place a limit on the number of taxi trips a company can supply.) The market for taxi trips in Lumino City has the following characteristics: Inverse demand for taxi trips is given by the function, P = 90 − Q . 1000 In this equation, P is the price of a taxi trip, and Q is the total quantity of taxi trips supplied by licensed taxi companies. The marginal cost, to a taxi company, of supplying a taxi trip is $18. A taxi company’s only fixed cost is the cost of purchasing a licence from the Government Taxi Authority. Question 1: Suppose that the Government Taxi Authority issues only one license, to Big Ben Taxis. Assuming uniform pricing, find the quantity of taxi trips that Big Ben Taxis will choose to supply, and the price at which these trips will be sold. Neglecting the cost of the license, what profit will Big Ben Taxis earn. (8 Marks) Question 2: Now suppose that the Government Taxi Authority issues two licenses, to Big Ben Taxis and Whitehall Taxis. Find the equilibrium price and quantities for the case in which the two taxi companies engage in Cournot (quantity)......

...Online Learning Table of Contents 1. Executive Summary 2. Introduction 3. Body 4. Conclusion 5. Recommendations 6. References Executive Summary Today in any educational system one of the biggest challenges is how to provide quality instruction to the students who require it. Online learning for the teachers and the students is considered as the fastest growing trends in the educational system. Online learning (digital learning) can achieve its objective of reaching greater number of students by making the educational system move beyond the traditional way of teaching i.e. face to face. High quality education can be made accessible through online learning to students living in rural areas as well as under high poverty. On the other hand, the courses which are unavailable at local schools can be made available through online learning. Introduction Online learning came into existence since 1999 when during a CBT seminar a new word was used i.e. e learning which meant a method to learn via new technologies through the utilization of internet, intranet, CD-rom etc. The e learning tools expanded in 20th century with the introduction of computers and internet. In 1980’s the first Mac made people use computers at their homes which helped them to develop certain skills and knowledge. In today’s era internet is regarded as the most important motivational tool of learning as well as technologies as it helps in making the online learning environment......

Week 1 Assignment-Media and Culture Theory

...In the world today the media has a major impact on individuals who are involved in it. Rather it be through the radio, television, or the internet the majority of individuals have access to this and are susceptible to the impact that it has. There are many theories that define the relations between individuals and the impact that media has. One theory out there is based off of a learning theory. This theory is the Social Cognitive Theory, and it revolves around the “functions and processes of observational learning. By observing others’ behaviors, including those of media figures, one may develop rules to guide one’s own subsequent actions prompted to engage in previously learned behavior” (Nabi & Oliver 2010). Media directly influences individuals simply by the viewers watching or listening to the media and picking up the behavior of that media.  According to Bandura (1986, 2002), “observational learning is guided by four processes. Attention to certain models and their behavior is affected by source and contextual features such as attractiveness, relevance, functional need, and affective valence. Second, retention processes focus on the ability to symbolically represent the behavior observed and its consequences, along with any rehearsal of that sequence. The third is production, which focuses on translating the symbolic representations into action, reproducing the behavior in seemingly appropriate contexts, and correcting for any errors based on the feedback received....

Theory of Consumer Choice

...Student’s Name: Course Name: Instructor’s Name: Institution: Date: Consumer choice theory is a microeconomics branch that tries to relate preferences to both consumer demand curves and consumer expenditures. The theory analyses the way consumers maximize their need to consume which is measured by their preferences against the limited ways on their expenditure. Consumers do this by utility maximization subject to a constraint on their budget. Other times it gets referred to as the theory of consumer behavior. Through the study of this theory, researchers can explain why the consumers would buy more of the product when its price is less as compared to when its price is high. Another elaboration of the theory is that it shows the reason why the households spend their income as they always do (Haugtvedt, Herr, & Kardes, 2008). The greater assumption is that every consumer is rational and aims at maximizing their satisfaction. Some major theories explain the consumer behavior. First is the Cardinalist approach or the marginal utility theory and the second is the ordinalist approach or the analysis of the indifference curves. The former describes extra satisfaction a consumer derives after consuming an extra unit of a commodity while consumption of all other products remains unchanged. The law of diminishing marginal utility gives a thorough elaboration on why the demand curves always have a downward sloping nature. The latter shows the line of combinations (indifference......
