...studying positive psychology (Seligman, 2012). Positive psychology studies happiness in depth. He identified three types of happiness: pleasant life, engaged life, and meaningful life. The “pleasant life” is defined by “aiming to have as much positive emotion as possible around and learning the skills necessary to amplify life” (Seligman, 2011). The “engaged life” is characterized by identifying your greatest strengths and or talents to work at remolding life as a partner, employee, friend, parent, sibling, and more leading to pleasure (Seligman, 2011). Lastly, the “meaningful life” refers to using your gifts, talents, and skills to work toward a greater good outside of the self (Seligman, 2011). Although Dr. Seligman states, in his research, that the top forms of happiness are “meaningful life” and “engaged life”, it can be perceived that “pleasant life” happiness is just as note worthy as “meaningful life” and “engaged life” happiness combined. Aristotle and Happiness the Good Life Aristotle defines personal happiness through the existence of practicing virtues, in life, where both the desire and the pursuit of wealth is kept in balance. According to Aristotle, virtue reaches its height with the exercise of the intellectual virtues of prudence and wisdom – the first manifest in the leadership of organizations, and the second in the philosophic search for truth (Bragues, 2006). Some scholars would argue death brings about happiness; however, it is noted that......

Reading Journal 1

...Reading Journal #1 “A Classroom of her own” is an article about the author Danell Jones. Danell Jones is a British author who has written a book called “The Virginia Woolf Writers’ Workshop: Seven Lessons to Inspire Great Writing”. Erika Dreifus, the author of the article, had found out about this book from a friend who had a blog about “new Woolf-related books”. Dreifus goes on to explain some of the features of the book which include the seven short chapters which end with a section that Jones refers to as “writing sparks”. At first I was a little thrown on how this paper was written. It started in the first person narrative about how Dreifus had found out about the book, but then the story proceeds in a third person informative. The entire article is about the facts of the book, how the book is formatted and gives an example from the book. Dreifus describes how Jones invented the person in her book, Virginia Woolf. “… Jones, who has been teaching writing for more than 20 years and holds a Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia University, has invented the persona of Virginia Woolf, writing instructor, and placed this character smack in front of a fictional group of aspiring writers.” Jones has created a fictional character to teach fictional people about how to write good stories or poems. Dreifus then proceeds to describe part of the book where Jones gives an example of Virginia Woolf’s interaction with the fictional workshop participants. Dreifus quotes a section......

Reading Assignment #1

...ISOM 135 Summer 2013 Reading Assignment # 1 5/20/13 The problem in this case is the U.S. health care industry is the world’s most inefficient information enterprise. An electronic medical record system would save a lot of money in health care, and it would generally be easier on staff and doctor to access information. Electronic records would possibly reduce error and improve care, create less paperwork, and provide quicker service. The difficulties in building electronic medical record systems include it costing $30,000 to $50,000 per doctor. This would cause an issue for medical practices with fewer than four doctors. Also, training a doctor would take up to 20 hours of his or her time. There would be many obstacles that health providers, IT developers, and insurance companies would need to overcome before this system could be used nationally. Not digitalizing medical records would impact patients. Patients already using this system reduced their hospital admission by 25 percent and the length of their hospital stays by 20 percent. VistA improves patient quality of care. It insures that correct dosages are given and going to the correct patient. As mentioned before, this system would greatly reduce human error. One issue with electronic medical records is the sharing of records between different systems. Some systems may not be able to report the same data to one another. Another problem is there could be a conflict of interest for the insurance companies......

Literature Research

...Literature Research Literature reviews are completed by students to learn the proper format for setting up their own research projects. The following is information gleaned on what a literature review is, why it is conducted, and how to understand completing one . Additional information on how to write a review is covered as well. A literature review surveys scholarly articles, books and other sources relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, and by so doing, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of these works. Literature reviews are designed to provide an overview of sources you have explored while researching a particular topic and to demonstrate to your readers how your research fits into the larger field of study. A literature review may consist of simple a summary of key sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis, often within specific conceptual categories. A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information in a way that informs how you are planning to investigate a research problem. The analytical features of a literature review might: * Give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations, * Trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates, * Depending on the situation, evaluate the sources and advise the reader on......

American Literature 1

...American Literature I Prof. Ignacio Magaloni Over the last 5 weeks, there have been many interesting readings assigned. We have experienced readings from Native Americans and European Americans that settled here in America. Through these readings we have learned how each culture communicated with each other and expressed their views. We have also learned many different customs that each culture practiced or believed in. Early European Americans expressed how they felt leaving England and then later becoming a new independent country. As I look back, both cultures did believe in a God or Great Spirit and each one worked in a different way. This is one concept that caught my attention the most, the Native Americans believed deeply in the Great Spirit. In week five, we read stories of the Pontiac and other Native American Tribes. As I read through the stories they all had one thing in common and that was the Great Spirit. The Native Americans relied heavily on the Great Spirit for guidance and worshipped him greatly. “Our Great Father, over the great waters, is angry with the white people, our enemies. He will send his brave warriors against them; he will send us rifles, and whatever else we want-he is our friend, and we are his children.” (449) When the white men were trying to overrun the native Americans it was the Great Spirit who gave them advice to rely on the ancestor’s techniques to overcome the white men. The European Americans on the other hand......

The History of the Music Business: Literature Review of Readings

...The History of the Music Business: Literature review of readings The landscape of the music business has been shaped by influential minds in music history. From as early as the 1940s to the 21st century, artists such as Nirvana and managers such as Peter Grant have made major decisions that would shape their careers and subsequently the future of the music business (Goldberg, 2008; Welch, 2003). In this literature review, the events and decisions that helped shaped the future will be examined and explored in the text to understand their impact on the music business. Ahmet was one of the influential people in the early stages of the music industry (Greenfield, 2011). When he met all the guys with independent record companies and decided they were ‘a bunch of third-rate crooks’, he like Rothchild jumped on the opportunity to get into the record business and eventually finding Atlantic records with Herb (Greenfield, 2011: 40; Goodman, 1997). But not all independent record labels were third rate crooks, Morris Levy, started from an independent record company, Roulette and was an important figure in the early stages of the music business (Dannen, 1990). He was described as the octopus of the music industry with his influences and connections, especially with the mafia who were heavily influential in many parts of the States. This would set the precedent for the future rap industry in which the themes of alcohol, stripper, violence and drugs are common and run by gangsters....

...BEATRISA SHEKHTER NRS 433-V Literature Search Wound Care is very important topic in modern medical field. Pressure ulcers are the major problem in the long term facilities. Having an understanding of the exact cause of pressure ulcers helps place the role of repositioning into context. Demographic and epidemiological data suggest that health-care demand will increase considerably in the future as a result of an ageing population and a rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes. This phenomenon has come to be referred to as the ‘health care time bomb’ in the popular press and political discourse. The authors seek to look beyond the headlines and political rhetoric to clarify the extent to which they reflect the likely future reality with a specific focus on wound management. The present-day burden that wounds and current wound management practices place upon the health-care system are detailed and clarified, and the potential future implications of increasing wound prevalence on the current picture are explored. Possible opportunities to enhance current wound management practice as identified in the analysis are discussed. Declaration of interest: Alistair Biel by is a contractor for Smith & Nephew. Richard Searle is and employee of Smith & Nephew. This project was supported by an unrestricted grant from Smith & Nephew. As such, a pressure ulcer is defined as localized injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence, as a......

Nursing Research Paper: Literature Review

...The Research of Medical Marijuana: A literature Review One of the most controversial subjects not only in health care but also in the United States right now is medical marijuana. The subject of marijuana is not new to the U.S but medical marijuana is just beginning to evolve. Medical marijuana also referred to as cannabis, is meant to be a form of medical therapy to treat certain diseases and alleviate symptoms. According to a current research, “Cannabis has been used to reduce nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy and AIDS and to treat pain and muscle spasticity” (Werner, 2012) Since July 31st 2014 there are now 23 legal medical marijuana states and also DC. As many people know, Illinois has just joined on the medical marijuana bandwagon and legalized it in 2013. Becoming a nurse, the use of medical marijuana is going to keep growing and there is still a large amount of research and studies to be done on the subject. Efficacy and safety of medical marijuana in selected neurologic disorders Researches Koppel, Brust, Fife, Bronstein, Youssof, Gronseth, and Gloss came together to focus on how medical marijuana would affect people with neurologic disorders. The main purpose in this study is to determine the efficiency of medical marijuana in several neurologic conditions. One of the most common neurologic disorders seen is multiple sclerosis; which is an autoimmune disease that affects a person’s brain and spinal cord. (Koppel, et. al, 2013) Key points The question the......

Readings in Fiction - Paper 1

...Readings in Fiction First Paper January 28, 2014 When analyzing the cultural history of the United States, it helps to first look at the novels written from a specific time period. The first three novels read in this class, McTeague, The Great Gatsby, and The Sun Also Rises, help to demonstrate how the people of this nation reacted to the fast paced changes that spanned from the late 1890s through the 1920s. Throughout this paper I will show how each of these novels reflected the evolution of American culture through the stories they told. At the turn of the century, American culture started to see a large shift of people attempting to expand their horizons. Before this time, if your father was a farmer you would most likely be a farmer. The same goes for many other professions. When someone did take a different path than their parents, it was still in similar work. For example, the son of a miner may become a black smith. The core work is different; however it still involves some sort of manual trade labor. When the 1900s came around sons would try to break away from their family’s tradition of work. Instead of becoming a car boy, sons would become printing apprentices. Or in the case of McTeague, the son of a miner would go on to become a dentist. This was the trend of the time, people trying to create their own destinies. The Novel McTeague tells a story of this search for a new destiny, but in a way that depicts this pursuit as futile. This is because McTeague is a......

Literature Research Gastric Bypass

...Gastric Bypass and Diabetes Literature Research Shayne Howard Grand Canyon University: NRS-433V Introduction to Nursing Research 03/19/2016 Introduction Diabetes is one of the most deadly diseases known to man. That is a bold statement but when you consider that a big percentage of the other most deadly diseases like heart disease, kidney failure and strokes can be caused by diabetes then it puts it in to perspective. Diabetes causes many health problems besides these as well. The complications associated with diabetes are numerous but include neuropathy, blindness, amputation, impotency, depression and cognitive decline just to name a few. Some of these complications are inevitable but they can be avoided or at least prevented for an amount of time with proper diet and exercise or following a medication regimen. For some however the disease hits too hard too fast or because of physical restraints exercise is not a viable option. For these patients a surgical option such as weight loss surgery may be their only recourse. There are 4 major types of weight loss surgery that can be used to treat morbid obesity and in turn diabetes. There are the Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass, the Gastric sleeve, Gastric banding, and the Duodenal switch. The most popular for mild weight loss is the gastric band in which an adjustable band is place around the stomach limiting the size and thereby limiting the amount of food intake. This is less invasive and reversible but also less effective......

Reading Response 1: Incentives

...Reading Response 1- Incentives I do not believe that children should be given incentives just to do better at something. If you are going to give your child money, make them work for it. Show them the value of a dollar and not the value of a letter grade. Children are required to go to school in order to learn and become educated. If your children want to do something or go out with friends and they need money have them work for it. There are chores they can do around the house like mowing the yard or taking out the trash and for every task done allot each one with a certain dollar amount. Show your child the value of a dollar and what it means to work for it. When I was in school, my father tried to bribe me with money for good grades. For every A I earned I got $20; if I got straight A’s I received $100. I believe the only reason he started this was for my younger sister who was having a hard time in school and he wanted her to focus more on her learning. In the end it did not really work and I ended up having to tutor her through most of her classes as we got older. Even though I was given the money, I would always share it with my sister and we would go to the movies or the arcade and just have fun. My children are now at the age where I can start giving them chores to do to help me out around the house. I have started them off with small things to do, like cleaning their room, taking out the bathroom trash, and helping me load the dishwasher. For......
