Phuket Beach Hotel

... Ref. 01/108C 1 KO WANG SU HAN CHAN PHUKET BEACH HOTEL: VALUING MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE CAPITAL PROJECTS Mike Campbell, General Manager of Phuket Beach Hotel, paced his office and considered an offer made by Planet Karaoke Pub. Planet Karaoke Pub was expanding fast in Thailand. It was looking for a venue in Patong beach area for setting up another outlet, and was eyeing an unused space owned by the Hotel. At this point, the space was located on the second floor of the main building and was very much under-utilised. It was reserved for the construction of an alley linking to a new wing for the hotel, which would not be completed until two years later. Planet Karaoke Pub offered to sign a four-year lease agreement with the hotel for renting part of the unused space. It proposed to pay: • a monthly rental fee of 170,000 baht for the first two years; and • thereafter, a 5% increment for the next two years. In order to accommodate the hotel’s expansion plan, Planet Karaoke Pub required only 70% of the unused space, which had a size of 3,000 sq. feet. This would allow the hotel to keep the remaining space for the creation of an alley two years later. It was envisaged that the proposed pub would not affect the hotel’s future expansion plan. Nevertheless, Mike was still a bit perplexed about the decision facing him. Similar development proposals had previously been rejected by the board of directors. One of the old proposals, which involved converting the space......

...Back to Hotel Strategic Management 101: An examination of hotels’ implementation of Porter’s generic strategy in China Yin-Hsi Lo, Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management, Southern Taiwan University, Taiwan ABSTRACT The market-position view (MPV) of the firm in Porter’s generic strategy hypothesizes that the exploitation of differentiation and cost-leadership can create competitive advantage for a firm, which then has a better chance of outperforming other firms in a homogeneous industry. However, this notion has not been tested in the Chinese hotel industry. In response to this gap, this study empirically examines the relationships between the generic strategies of differentiation and cost leadership and hotels’ organizational performance. The results suggest that differentiation is the only significant generic strategy that influences customer satisfaction in the Chinese hotel industry. These findings have important academic and practitioner implications, which are then discussed. Keywords: Competitive Strategy, Customer Satisfaction, Hotel Performance, Market Positioning INTRODUCTION There has been a great deal of discussion in the literature about the impressive hotel development in China in the past 20 years (Derbaix & Pham, 1998; Devonport, Biscomb, & Lane, 2008; Echtner & Ritchie, 1993; Fakeye & Crompton, 1991; C Fornell, 1992; Foxall & Goldsmith, 1994; Pine, 2002; Yu & Gu, 2005). ...which may impact Marriot’s ability to compete successfully with other hotel and timeshare properties for customers. 3) Currency exchange fluctuation might make Marriot very vulnerable to foreign markets. b) Business risk 4) – 7) 4) Trademark or intellectual property infringement 5) Circumstances, such as the bankruptcy of its branch hotel owner or franchisee, or a failure under some agreements to meet will impact Marriot for sure. 6) Business segments risk -----unbalance gain between managing and franchising Marriott follows the business model wherein it emphasizes on managing and franchising hotels, rather than owning them. The company operated 46% of its hotel rooms under management agreements, 52% under franchise agreements. But, as compared to this, only 33.6% of the revenue in FY2009 were earned through franchising while 66.4% from own operation. The emphasis on management contracts and franchising although tends to provide more stable earnings in periods of economic softness, however does not provide much scope for revenue growth. c) Risk from emerging markets : 7) The economic and political instability in the developing country lead to the risk of Marriots operation including customer loyalty and reputation. In 2008, a massive bomb blast has hit the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, killing at least 40 people. These incidents could result in lower check-ins at Marriott hotels which will affect the company’s business and reputation in the......

Home Renovation Tax Credit

...The Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) is identified as a potential instrument to stimulate the construction market by providing an incentive to home owners to engage in a minimum amount of house renovations (Garland, 2009). It was introduced back in 2009 as a temporary measure to provide a timely stimulus to the Canadian economy when the construction industry needed a boost (Warnica, 2015). Unlike the 2009 credit which resulted in $3 billion in government tax expenditures, the permanent HRTC is going to cost $1.5 billion in tax expenditures yearly and 15 percent annual credit would apply to renovations between $1,000 and $5,000 (McMahon, 2015). The tax credit is presumed to help Canadian families and support Canadian jobs. The potential benefit of Harper’s Home Renovation Tax Credit is that it will help curb underground activities (CHBA, 2015) and foster household health and safety. With HRTC, there is an incentive for home owners to hire legitimate tax paying professional contractors for home renovations. By requiring receipts to support HRTC claims, home owners will be discouraged from hiring unskilled underground operators- who work for cash and tend to ignore health and safety requirements in home renovations (CHBA, 2015). If home owners claim the tax credit, not only will underground activities in the construction industry reduce, there will be an increase in government revenues (Stinespring, 2011) as legitimate tax paying contractors will gain business that would......
