Managerial Economics Case Number 6 Topic: Elasticity of Demand Objective: a) To apply the concept of elasticity of demand b) To correlate elasticity with decision making

University fees – part I President Jones of Indian Institute of Business Economics (IIBE) is concerned about the financial state of his institution. Last year there was a loss of Rs.1.5 million and the trustees are getting restless. Currently there are 1000 full-time students, 700 of whom are degree students from their country and 300 of whom are the students from abroad. The present level of fees, including tuition, room and board, is Rs. 1,80,000 and Rs. 2,00,000 for foreign students per year. Jones is proposing a 10% increase for next year. On the basis of past experience he has estimated that the price elasticity of demand for degree students is -1.2 and for study-abroad students is 1.6. He is particularly worried about the effect of the fee increase. Jones is also considering a change in promotional expenditure. This currently amounts to 2% of total revenues and it is estimated that the promotional elasticity of demand is 0.1. It is also estimated that variable costs per student are Rs.60,000. Questions 1. Why might Jones’s estimates of the relevant price elasticities not be very reliable? 2. Estimate the effect of the proposed fee increase on the number of degree students and revenues from these students, stating any relevant assumptions. 3. Estimate the effect of the proposed fee increase on the total number of students and on total revenues. 4. Estimate how much would have to be spent on promotion to restore revenues to their current level after the increase in fees. 5. Compare the level of profit after the fee change, both with and without the change in promotion, with the current situation.

Inductive Power Transmission

...Inductive Power Transfer Group 10 Muralidhar Konda Shourie Reddy OBJECTIVE ● The main aim of the project is to design and construct a method to transfer wireless Electrical Power to charge a low power device so as to reduce the usage of “wires”. ● Another application would be to include charging of multiple devices using a single source . SPECIFICATIONS ● High frequency (upto 100-500 KHz) ● High Efficiency(40-50%) which can be achieved by increasing the coupling between the transmitter and receiver. ● The range should not be less than 10 cms. ● High current(500mA or more). METHODS There are different methods by which power can be transmitted wirelessly. Some of them would be ● Using Inductive Coupling for short range. ● Resonant Induction for mid range. ● Electromagnetic wave power transfer for high range. TRANSMITTER MODULE ● The transmitter module of our project is made up of a D.C. power source, an oscillator circuit(royer oscillator in our case) and a transmitter coil. ● The D.C. power source provides a constant D.C. voltage to the input of the oscillator circuit. There, this D.C. power is converted to a high frequency A.C. power and is supplied to the transmitter coil. ● The transmitter coil, energized by the high frequency A.C. current, produces an alternating magnetic field. ROYER OSCILLATOR FREQUENCY MODIFICATION ● The oscillator runs at the frequency determined by the inductance of the coil and the capacitor value ● The operating......

Nestle USA is known for its many brands that are sold in stores that were products of their seven different divisions and the brands were but not limited to: Baby Ruth, Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine, Nestle Toll House, Nescafe, Alpo and many more. With a staff growing over 16,000 Nestle USA has a total gross of $8 billion per year and is still increasing to this day. Why decide to use ERP implementation SAP? During the 1990’s, Nestle USA companies were operating as independents and were selling their vanilla product that was purchased from the same vendor 29 different prices. This became a concerning issue with the CIO and therefore something had to be done. In the year of 1997 the company made the decision to “standardize” their software systems to be all of one unit between its seven different divisions. In order to standardize the system, Nestle USA decided that the SAP modules would be based on: financials, sales and distributing, purchasing, accounts payable and accounts receivable. With these five SAP modules and using the Manugistic’s supply chain model, Nestle USA knew that implementing this ERP would take time but also benefit them in the long run. What issues may have caused concern with using the SAP model? During the phase of planning, the company realized that Y2K was soon approaching which caused a lot of worry in trying to get the standard software to be moved......

Yue Sai

...Yue Sai L’Oreal China has adapted its marketing strategy to fit the needs of the Chinese consumer: in 2004, it has acquired the first modern cosmetics brand of China, Yue Sai. The cosmetic world is a market that keeps on growing: numerous new patents rhythm the life of each skincare line, and trends come and go as quick as they do in fashion. While luxury cosmetics are still being associated with Europe for Chinese women, the clientele is becoming more and more interested in skincare lines from Japan and Korea: herbal medicine they’re familiar with, needs that are similar to theirs… and L’Oreal China has well understood this fact. With Yue Sai, which holds the image of traditional elegance thanks to its founder, Madam Yue Sai Kan, L’Oreal aims at adding a new type of products to its never ending line: one that’s at the same time innovative with scientific improvements inspired by herbal medicine, glamorous, and widely accessible. Indeed, though assigned to the luxury product division of L’Oreal China, Yue Sai remains more affordable than imported goods such as Lancôme or YSL, but promises just as much. « Nobody knows Chinese skin more than Yue Sai », that’s the brand’s longstanding motto, on which L’Oreal is outbidding : with the launch of skincare lines such as the Vital Essential Line, that promoted the use of the ganoderma mushroom known for restoring the skin’s internal energy and balance, Yue Sai aims at relaying the image of a new and modern Chinese woman, one......

Loreal Case Study

...Cha 1a) In a short time, the young Chinese cosmetic market has become quite saturated with numerous firms. In order for Yue Sai to position its brand effectively, it has to draw upon unique strengths that others do not have. Madam Yue-Sai created Yue Sai with the aim “to create, produce and sell the very best beauty and skincare products that we can offer to Asian women and to the world…” The company started under her belief that the Chinese women had different standards for beauty and required specifically tailored cosmetic products. If Yue Sai under Cotyhad continued to build its brand under this positioning instead of focusing on distribution, the brand would be a far more prominent player in the current Chinese market due to first mover advantage. Yue Sai is currently competing in target markets and product properties that it simply cannot succeed in. Consumers that are aware of Yue Sai’s original positioning brand image are most likely in their 30-50s. Luxury cosmetic firms do not traditionally target this consumer segment. If Yue Sai repositions its brand from “cosmetics for confident, modern Chinese women” to “delicate luxury cosmetics for modern mature Chinese women”, the brand would be able to instill a distinct image in the targeted consumer’s mind relative to competition. It is the ideal positioning for a brand named after Madam Yue-Sai, who now perfectly fits the new segment. It will be able to grab a dominant share of a relatively unexplored target market.......

...Questions for Pioneer Corporation Group Members: Arun Prakash Muralidhar Babu (Section 2); Anindita Pal (Section 6) and Raghav Sharma (Section 5) Please comment critically on the following: 1- Do you agree with the way the company computes its weighted average cost of capital. Why or why not? Be specific? How would you compute the WACC? Use RF= 8.08%, Beta of equity for Pioneer = 0.8 and RM-RF = 7% I disagree with the way the company computes it’s WACC. They are assuming a cost of equity based on the current earnings yield on the stock to raise new equity. This does not make sense as the share price can fluctuate and vary based on multiple market factors. Also the market risk premium to raise new capital is not factored in here. So we should use the Capital Asset Pricing Model to calculate cost of equity. Cost of equity = Rf + Beta * Market Risk Premium = 8.08% + 0.8* 7% = 13.68% Since the company has instituted a policy to maintain a 50-50 equity-debt, % of debt and % equity = 0.5 Since the company has policies to maintain appropriate financial leverage, its fair to assume they will sustain their A rating. Therefore, Tax deducted cost of debt is 7.9%. WACC is given by: 0.5* 13.68% + 0.5*7.9% = 10.79% 2- Should Pioneer use a single cutoff versus multiple cutoffs for discount rates if beta of exploration division is 1.07, beta of refining division is 0.95, and beta of transportation division is 0.52? Why? I think that......
