Summary
Seabreeze is a midsize city in California facing a continuing trend of revenue declines. The reduction in discretionary spending during the recent economic downturn has impacted the city’s tourist and service industries. It has also directly impacted the city in a decline of sales tax revenues. In addition to these income losses the state government has legislated that 20 per cent of gross property tax revenues will be transferred to the state in an effort to close a large budget deficit in the state budget. As a result of these financial reverses a wholesale effort to cut costs over all of the areas of city management is being pursued. One of the ways to significantly reduce the costs of the Information Technology Department is to virtualize the server hardware that the city currently utilizes. This will have a secondary benefit of reducing the city’s costs associated with owning server equipment such as cooling and power. The IT Department should also move to leasing the end-user computers to allow the city to amortize the costs over a replacement lifecycle instead of purchasing the equipment outright and having the costs of upgrading and keeping spare systems on hand to accommodate replacements.
Proposed Plan
The city of Seabreeze would benefit by converting to a completely hosted virtual solution to eliminate the cost of ownership of physical servers and storage area networks. This will also allow Seabreeze to utilize the hosting company’s services to manage backups and disaster recovery planning. Seabreeze will also be able to eliminate a large amount of software costs by utilizing Google Apps for Work. This will also allow the city to utilize software as a service reducing their software licensing costs and the costs of having staff to support it. Seabreeze would also be a good candidate to lease the end-user computers. This will allow them to…...

Why, when he now knew that the suspects were not forever lost in Alaska or Mexico or Timbuctoo, when the next second an arrest might be made - why was it he felt none of the excitement he ought to feel? The dream was at fault, for the treadmill mood of it had lingered, making him question Nye's assertions - in a sense, disbelieve them. In Miami Beach, 335 Ocean Drive is the address of the Somerset Hotel, a small, square building painted more or less white, with many lavender touches, among them a lavender sign that reads, "VACANCY - LOWEST RATES - BEACH FACILITIES ALWAYS A SEABREEZE." It is one of a row of little stucco-and-cement hotels lining a white, melancholy street. In December, 1959, the Somerset's "beach facilities" consisted of two beach umbrellas stuck in a strip of sand at the rear of-the hotel. One umbrella, pink, had written upon it, "We Serve Valentine Ice-Cream." At noon on Christmas Day, a quartet of women lay under and around it, a transistor radio serenading them. The second umbrella, blue and bearing the command "Tan with Coppertone," sheltered Dick and Perry, who for five days had been living at the Somerset, in a double room renting for eighteen dollars weekly. Perry said, "You never wished me a Merry Christmas." "Merry Christmas, honey. And a Happy New Year. " Dick wore bathing trunks,......

...LYT2 Task 3 City of Seabreeze Virtualization Adoption Plan! Given the City of Seabreeze’s declining revenue stream and resultant financial situation, as well as simple good government, it is critical that the city find ways of reducing expenses while continuing to provide the services needed by the citizens of Seabreeze. This includes the city’s use of information technology. Technology investments cannot simply be eliminated, as they are a critical component of the city’s infrastructure on which key city services rely upon. Therefore it is necessary to identify technologies which can produce a greater return on investment (ROI) through reductions in the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the city’s technology assets. One approach that would meet this need that has been identified is the adoption of server, storage and desktop virtualization technology. These technologies not only represent a significant opportunity for the City of Seabreeze to reduce costs, but it will also enable the city to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, raise IT staff efficiency, and improve disaster recovery capabilities. 1. Virtualization benefits The term “virtualization” refers to technology that enables a single physical device, such as a server with a large pool of resources (CPU, memory, disk, etc.), to be logically segregated into smaller separate “virtual machines”, or “VMs” that are each given their own subset of resources based on their actual utilization requirements.......

...City of Seabreeze, CA Virtualization Adoption Plan Introduction The city of Seabreeze, California has experienced several consecutive years of decreasing revenues resulting in a significant decline of tax revenue for the city. As a result of the reduction in revenue, the city must find ways to cut cost in all operational segments included Information Technology. In its current state, the city operates 72 physical servers, a storage environment and 350 end-user computers. The IT director has been tasked to identify where the elimination, replacement, or addition of technology would result in cost savings to the city. In order to save the city money, it has been determined that the best solution would be to implement a virtualized IT environment in the city of Seabreeze. Virtualization is the means to create a virtual version of a device or resource, such as a server, storage device, network or even an operating system where the framework divides the resource into one more execution environments. (Virtualization, n.d) a1. The virtualization of the IT environment would have a big positive impact in terms of long term cost savings for the city of Seabreeze. ...Explain how the benefits of virtualization would impact the city of Seabreeze. There are many benefits to migration of a datacenter to a virtual environment. The most understated benefit is true power savings. The reduction of the overall hardware footprint literally means the organization doesn’t have as many servers or desktops to power on a daily basis. These saving which have to be measured over time will contribute to a sizeable decrease in power consumption. As a result of a reduced footprint, less space will be required to house required hardware since multiple servers can be housed on a single hardware host. After virtualization the amount of time to provision a new server is reduced from sometimes weeks to minutes. There is no new hardware to purchase. Only an operating systems license is required if the chosen OS is not free. Server uptime is also increased because of High Availability and Disaster recovery features that are built-in to the product. Explain how to offset potential negative implications of the adoption of virtualization for the city of Seabreeze. The biggest concern for most pre-virtualization users is fear. The fear of cost and application compatibility were some of the largest obstacles for early adopters. Over the years this has changed tremendously. One of the biggest opposing companies to virtualization was Oracle. They refused to support or adopt any form of virtualization for their products. A company the size of Oracle steered away from......

Due to the decline in the real estate market, the city experienced a decrease in property tax revenues. People are spending their money in other areas and less in tourism and retail activity. As a result, this generated less sales tax revenue. To offset the budget deficit, the California Legislature passed a bill requiring cities to transfer 20% of their gross property tax revenues to the state. The city is looking for ways to save money and one of those areas is technology. It is impossible to eliminate technology such as computers all together because it’s a big part of the city daily operations. One of the potential options is virtualization of city’s physical servers, storage devices, and end user computers would result in significant savings in cost to the city of Seabreeze. Benefits of Virtualization Virtualization is defined as a technology that uses software to run multiple applications and operating systems on one or more physical host servers all at the same time. ...Seabreeze Virtualization Adoption Plan Bob Western Governors University Seabreeze Virtualization Adoption Plan The city of Seabreeze has had the misfortune of decreasing revenue for the past several years and is in desperate need of some cost saving initiatives. The solution must not impact services currently delivered to its citizens. Information technology (IT) is one of the services that must be maintained during the financial reductions. Because the city relies heavily on the use of IT to provide government services elimination of existing infrastructure is not an option. An alternate solution is essential in order to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the city’s IT equipment by providing newer technology that will have a higher return on investment (ROI). The option identified to fulfill this need is the adoption of virtualized servers, storage devices, and desktop computers. The conversion to virtualized environments will result in substantial cost savings as well as providing enhanced security, greatly improved disaster recovery, a more competent IT staff, and a smaller carbon footprint. 1. Benefits of Virtualization Virtualization is “the process of creating a virtual, rather than physical, version of something” (Virtualization, 2015). In the IT industry this refers to technology that utilizes software to imitate hardware and create virtual computer systems. One example of this is to use a single physical device such as a server and......
